Pilots can be a great strategy for setting the stage for sustainable funding. Many nonprofits have successfully leveraged a pilot project to unlock millions of dollars in funding and to achieve key policy changes that ensure those services are always available going forward. But too many pilot projects end with no discernible impact on funding or policy. And that's a shame because it doesn't have to be that way. The truth is if a nonprofit makes one or more key mistakes when setting up the pilot, it'll probably fail to generate meaningful change. But with proper strategic design, you can dramatically increase your chances of turning a pilot project into long-term funding and policy gains. But it only works if we set it up to successfully prove the case for investment. In this episode, we share:The fundamental thing decisionmakers need to know from your pilotThe four major mistakes that can doom your pilot projectHow to define success for the three most critical entities in your projectThe two keys to getting impactful data from your pilotHow to get the full engagement and cooperation of all partners in the pilotThe biggest danger to your organization, and how to avoid this common trap inherent in pilot projectsLinks:Episode 09 - How to Get Decisionmakers to Pay Top Dollar for Your Organization's ServicesIf you found value in this episode, please share it with other progressive nonprofit leaders. SHOW SUMMARYBy every stretch of the imagination, Donald Corry has had an interesting career. After graduating from The Citadel, he served as a military intelligence officer and upon completion of active duty, began to carve himself a career in enterprise sales with Blackbaud. After a few years, Donald decided to work as a financial advisor with Edward Jones. In this episode of the Noob School, Donald and John talk about key lessons learned during his sales career, and why after so many years, he's still working on doing what he truly loves to do. HIGHLIGHTS From military intelligence to software sales and financial servicesIf they're not ready for your product, just walk awayThe intricacies of selling to the federal governmentHow to overcome the worst sales objection You need to do something you love QUOTESDonald on why he doesn't do that many follow up calls anymore: "What I started to realize — I call it the ketchup call: 'Hey, just calling to catch up, see how you we're doing.' I realize that all it does is to elongate the process, I don't need to be their friend. If they got a problem, I can help."Donald on the importance of knowing when to walk away: "That was the 'aha moment' for me in inside sales. It's your ability to say no. Because you're saving your time, you're saving a false forecast. There's another opportunity out there, you just got to go and find it." In my first year of business, I would judge the success or failure by what was in my bank account.Account go up = Good. Account go down = Bad.I should also mention my emotions were heavily tied to this also.Account go up = best guy to be around.Account go down = I wouldn't want to be near this guy.Anyhow, after 9 months of doing this, it became pretty clear this was a dumb way to do things.Every time an annual expense came up, it would lower my bank account, and I would act as if my business is failing. It got to the point in which I would delay paying for things just to keep the account up.It also meant I severely under-invested in my business to keep my bank account at a certain level…Which is incredibly dumb.I resisted hiring people unless absolutely crucial and would often just work more hours to make up for it.This left me working big hours doing tasks I could outsource cheaply. It's no wonder I wasn't making much money, and my business wasn't growing.Anyhow,I thought the role of a bookkeeper was to give my accountant what he needs, so I don't get into trouble with the ATO…Basically, keep me “compliant” with tax, GST and super.I didn't bother to read the reports… as that was for the accountant.I just thought my accountant needed them for something.I started searching online for how other business owners were dealing with this. Was everyone else a wreck managing things by their bank account?I came across a video by Keith Cunningham.Within 2 minutes, it hit me like a kick to the face.Running a business by a single bank account is possibly the dumbest way to run a business. It would be like driving a car without a dashboard.Do I need fuel? No ideaAm I going too fast? No ideaIs the engine light on? No idea I had no idea what was actually happening in my business.I wouldn't drive a car without a dashboard. So, why on earth would I run a business without one?The financial reports my bookkeeper had been sending me WERE that dashboard! Yes… I had the dashboard and I was paying someone for it but I didn't learn how to read it or use it. (facepalm)After that, I went on a rampage to master reading and using my financial reports. This is a skill that pays me immense dividends today.I want to encourage you to become strong in reading and using your financial reports. It's a critical skill for a Full Stack Business Owner. To go further, I made a podcast topic with Matt Williams (our resident bookkeeper).“Bookkeeping for compliance VS Bookkeeping to drive results.”We go deeper into the topic and highlight how you can work better with a bookkeeper. Although today's topic is not only utilized by LGBTQIA families, they are one of the biggest groups that do! This episode was recorded at the start of June, which is Pride Month, and with this episode we are celebrating just one of the many different ways to make a family. Our guest today is Certified Nurse Midwife Marianne Pelletier, who was inspired to enter birth work after the birth of her own children. After becoming a nurse, she worked for 12 years in labor & delivery in both a hospital and a birth center. Then in 1998 she completed her education as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Since then, she has worked in a variety of settings, including a free standing birth center, a small community hospital, and large teaching hospitals, providing holistic midwifery and gynecological care for people of all ages. After more than twenty three years of practice, she felt a calling to return to a more personalized, intimate form of midwifery care and began attending births at home. In 2020, Marianne officially partnered with certified professional midwife Rachel Blessington to co-found Embrace Midwifery, providing full spectrum midwifery care, planned home birth and holistic gynecology care throughout Central Massachusetts, with offices in Worcester, Fitchburg and Dudley. In this episode, we discuss the definition of Artificial insemination (AI) and the two types of AI, Intracervical insemination (ICI) and Intrauterine insemination (IUI). Marianne provides this service in her beautiful home office in Fitchburg for Embrace Midwifery. We discuss with Marianne why someone would elect to come to her for this procedure instead of a fertility clinic, who her typical clients are and who makes a good candidate for this provider in a basic office setting. We talk about what one can expect during a consultation, how they might get donor sperm, how they would arrange to have it at the office, the "washing" process and what to expect during and after. We also talk with Marianne about why she offers this service, given that it's rare for a homebirth or private practice midwife to provide this option. If you are located in Central Massachusetts and would like to learn more about intrauterine insemination with Marianne, visit www.embracemidwifery.care/servicesIf you are not in Central Massachusetts, try “Alternative Insemination (AI) Programs near me” in your search engine to see if there are any holistic, family centered artificial insemination providers near you!
