Let's face it: When it comes to choosing the right beauty products, it can be extremely overwhelming. There are thousands of products out there claiming to make us younger, ageless, and healthier. Plus, then they throw around words like “Natural,” “Organic,” and Chemical-free.” It can be hard to know where to start and what to believe.   We want to choose products that work and are good for us, but we know many beauty products are filled with toxins and preservatives that can cause more harm than good! And, on the other hand, some things that we were told were “toxic” may actually be OK!   Did you know... : Synthetic products may not actually always be bad for you?  Sugar consumption may be speeding up your aging process.  Or, that that slimy green stuff (algae) found in the ocean may be the secret to anti-aging from the inside out? And, that you can make the most amazing, natural face mask from things already sitting in your pantry?   On today's mashup episode we are talking all things natural beauty: Beauty brands that work, DIY recipes, myth-busting, and more, to help you learn how to give your beauty routine a green and health-friendly makeover.    We have 4 amazing guests that are going to help you get beautiful from the inside out.    First up, we are talking to Sophie Uliano. She is a best-selling author, a certified nutritionist, and a 20-year veteran in the wellness space (and believe me, she doesn't look it!) She is here to talk about those magic anti-aging serums and bust some long held beauty myths.    Next, we talk to my go-to beauty guru, Kerri Kasem who has a passion for teaching people how to be ageless and healthy. PLUS she helps us kick that sugar habit for good and start feeling and looking our best.    Then we are diving in deep with Catharine Arnston, Founder And CEO Of ENERGYbits (and her sister brand BEAUTYbits!) Catherine discovered the magical powers of algae and talks to us about its amazing immune-boosting and anti-aging properties.   Finally, we are sharing Suzy and I's favorite DIY beauty recipes for stunning skin and gorgeous gums that will have you checking yourself out in the mirror more than once today!   Tune in to learn:   How to use the top four most effective beauty ingredients: L-Ascorbic acid, Retinoids, Fruit Acids, Peptides What the heck is a pixel facial? The truth about synthetic ingredients Sophie Uliano's favorite beauty brands (like Oprah's Favorite Things for your face!) The truth about rosacea and how to stop it in its tracks Do IPLs (Intense Pulsed Light) really work? What sugar is doing to set back your beauty goals What Spirulina and Chlorella can do for your health, body, and beauty The secret to growing longer thicker hair A natural facial routine that will freeze your wrinkles in their tracks (no botox needed!) How to Get glowing gums and dazzling teeth And more! Thank You to Our Sponsors!   Ritual Protein  Protein powders can feel intimidating ('no pain, no gain'), and their formulas opaque (not just because they're a powder). But the truth is, deep down - as in, cellular level deep - we all need protein, and it's about more than just muscles. So Ritual's team of scientists (hello, Harvard) reimagined protein from the ground up and inside out, from how it's made to who it's for and why it's needed. The result is a delicious, plant-based protein - offered in three premium formulations for distinct life stages and unique nutrient needs - all made with the same high-standards approach and commitment to traceability that Ritual is known for. Whether you're doing reps… or more into dog walks! Introducing, Essential Protein - here to shake things up. So, why not shake up your Ritual? To make trying something new less scary, Ritual offers a money-back guarantee if you're not 100% in love. Plus, my listeners get 10% off during your first 3 months. Introducing Best Dog Probiotic: Just Pets Probiotic: A clinically proven and powerfully effective spore probiotic to help your furry friend feel their best!   I sat down with Tina Andersen, Founder of Just Thrive to find out more!  Unlike other forms of probiotics, Just Pets Probiotic spore probiotics were designed by nature to survive extreme temperatures and stomach acids so they always arrive in the gut alive. Once they reach the gut microbiome, spore probiotics activate and quickly get to work clearing out bad bacteria and encouraging the growth of new, beneficial bacteria. This rebalancing process can support the optimal health and protection of your dog's gut, resulting in numerous health and behavioral benefits.  A clinical study involving healthy dogs and dogs with severe GI issues showed that a unique blend of spore probiotics made a dramatic difference. Stephanis was gutted. “Online now - DM me” is what her boyfriend’s Match.com profile said.    The man she was living with, the man that she talked about marriage and family with -  was on the prowl. Not only that, but the profile said that he had just broken up with his girlfriend. It said she was not “the one”.   Shocked and heart-broken, Stephanie packed her things and moved out, but not before making an important observation. This was the fourth man who had cheated on her. The common denominator? Her. Why did she continually attract men into her life who wound up being unfaithful? Was it because she wasn’t showing herself the unconditional love that she craved?   A light switch went off and Stephanie went on a mission of seeking the truth, cultivating self-love practices, and learning how to rewire her subconscious mind to attract the things and people she truly wanted (and deserved) into her life.   Can you relate?    Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live your life as a master of your mind and energy? Today there’s a lot of blonde power in the recording studio! We’re asking two top health & wellness experts your burning health questions. Sophie Uliano is a nutritionist, green beauty expert, and best-selling author of the Gorgeously Green series of books. She runs retreats and events that empower women to transform from the inside out and be the healthiest they can be. This blonde bombshell taught Julia Roberts and Oprah how to go green BEFORE green was cool. Check out previous episodes 178, 185 and 200 for Sophie’s story and more gorgeously green lifestyle tips. Ella Magers was named one of Shape Magazine’s Top 50 Hottest Trainers in America, and we testify that she’s really hot - and vegan. She’s the author of Six Weeks to Sexy Abs, a book that will transform how you exercise for good. Vegan for 23 years, Ella runs online coaching programs helping people make the transition to a plant-based diet and healthy lifestyle. Check out episodes 97, 169 and 170 for Ella’s story. 1: How much exercise do we really need? The latest scientific research says the optimum amount of exercise is 60 minutes a day. Sounds like a lot, but you don’t have to do it all in one go: you can break it up. If you’re busy, do 10 minutes kettlebell in the morning, throw in a bit of high speed walking at lunchtime, and a spot of yoga in the afternoon. Simply being active in your day to day soon adds up when it comes to fitness. Even tidying up can help you work up a sweat. Consider your goals. If you’re focusing on long term health, lower impact exercise is a good choice. If you’re looking for fast results, go for high-intensity workouts. Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance between the two that works for you. 2: I like to drink a glass of wine every day. I’ve got a pretty healthy routine otherwise, but I just need that glass. Is it ok to have wine? Be plant-powered, eat your greens, and enjoy that glass of wine guilt-free. Firstly, wine is packed with antioxidants, in moderation it’s practically a health food (check out Dr. Cabral’s episode where he shares the secrets to drinking healthily). When you deny yourself something you love, you end up compensating by binging on something else. It’s more important to listen to your body. Definitely don’t feel guilty, because guilt changes the molecular structure of our bodies. So pour yourself that glass of wine, and enjoy every sip. 3: What’s the deal with SPF? Is the sun giving us skin cancer or is it good for us? What are you best recommendations for healthy sunscreen? The sun is not the devil. In fact, vitamin D is vital and you should get between 2000-5000 IU every day. A little bit of sunshine is ok (although definitely avoid the baby oil and the aluminum foil), but you need to be cautious and protect yourself from harmful rays. Our top tips: Wear a hat and non-toxic sunblock. You can make your own by mixing coconut oil and zinc oxide. Avoid conventional sunscreens, they’re packed with hormone-disrupting chemicals and don’t even work. Think about your diet. The more toxic you are, the more you’ll burn. 4: Colonics and enemas. Hype or healing tools? There’s a ton of conflicting information out there. Some say it’s lifesaving, others say it might kill you. The truth is somewhere in between. As a short-term fix or to kickstart your healing journey, they can work miracles. In fact, many Food Heals guests have had positive experiences with them. But some say washing away your microbiome is a bad idea, and colonics shouldn’t be relied upon long-term. If you eat clean and if you’re healthy, you don’t necessarily need colonics because you’re giving your digestive system everything it needs to function and support a healthy gut. The body is clever, it naturally detoxifies, and we can assist it in a gentle way by eating certain herbs and vegetables like cilantro, milk thistle and leafy greens. 5: What are the best green products for hair? Evolve H do a great starter kit for hair. Totally green non-toxic hair care. Bogavia do a delicious shampoo, conditioner and serum that really deliver. EO Products shampoos and conditioners are gluten-free, organic, and infused with essential oils that helps your hair grow. 6: How do you kick a Starbucks addiction? If you’re trying to kick the coffee habit, you can try a matcha tea shot instead. It will really energize you without giving you the jitters. Or give Hiball a try, they give you a natural lift. If it’s the take-out coffee habit you’re trying to shift, then look at it from an economic, health, and environment perspective. You can buy really good organic ethical tea or coffee, organic plant milk with no nasties added, make it at home and take it with you in a reusable cup… not only do you save money, but you avoid chemical-packed non-organic coffee and sugary milks (saving your health), and don’t contribute to the mountain of plasticized coffee cups polluting the oceans (saving the planet). When it comes to coffee with benefits, you can’t go wrong with Foursigmatic, instant coffee infused with medicinal mushrooms. 7: What are your thoughts on drinking aloe vera gel? Aloe vera can be good for food poisoning because it flushes you out and helps the intestinal tract to heal. However, you need to use it with caution, because it can be powerful and some people are super sensitive to it. In small amounts it can be delicious, you can mix it with lemon and mint for a healthy healing lemonade.  8: What are some tips to move out of food addiction and into a healthy relationship with our food? The first thing to acknowledge is that food is just a symptom of disordered eating. The cause is deeper. So switching to veganism or vegetarianism doesn’t automatically cure food addiction. You need to begin by exploring what sits behind those behaviors. What are the thoughts and beliefs fueling your eating patterns? Ultimately, when we reconnect to self-love, and are mindful of what is driving us to crave another serving of ice-cream (vegan or not), we can step out of disordered eating and into a healthy relationship with food.  Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU! 203: Free Yourself From Chronic Backpain And Transform Your Life Through Posture With Dr. Krista Burns

These days, everyone’s got back pain. In fact, that’s the number one reason people go to their doctor! 80% of Americans experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. No surprise really, since we spend much of our time sitting - at our desks, on our sofas, in our cars - or hunched over our cellphones. Poor posture is definitely to blame. And you might be surprised to know that it also affects how you feel. Growing up, Dr. Krista Burns wanted nothing more than to be a professional skier. But a back injury put an end to that dream, and conventional treatment only made matters worse. She knew there had to be a way to heal herself. After obtaining her first doctorate, she designed a 3-component system to address back pain. Through spinal alignment, posture rehabilitation and posture habit re-education, she freed herself from the chronic pain she had been experiencing for years. Since then, she has been determined to help people prevent and overcome back problems. Dr. Krista is now a certified chiropractic doctor, inspiring public speaker, and published author. She’s co-founded the American Posture Institute, where she and her team train healthcare providers to teach their patients proper posture. She’s also the brains behind www.posturearchetype.com, check out the website and take the free assessment to check your own posture archetype and receive a postural transformation solution designed specifically for you. How you stand affects your mood How you stand directly impacts how you feel. Similarly, how you feel directly impacts how you stand. When you feel depressed, you hunch your shoulders, cross your arms, hold your head low. When you feel uplifted, you stand straight, shoulders back, head held high. But at any moment you can choose to feel uplifted, or choose to feel depressed. By changing your posture, you can achieve a new emotional state. This fact is supported by science. Studies have shown that people with poor posture are more likely to experience negative moods and be self-critical. In the same way, people with good posture are happier, feel more confident, have a positive body image. You have the power to change your mood, simply by changing how you hold your body. Dr. Krista’s tips to get relief from back pain: Get to the root cause of your pain (take the archetype assessment) Move the area where you feel pain Strengthen your core - it will help support your spine and maintain postural alignment Bring your cellphone or laptop up to eye level so you’re not constantly looking down in a slumped posture. Avoid tech-neck! Create an active workspace. Standing desk, active sitting (like sitting on an exercise ball or posture cushion). Take frequent posture breaks; get up and stretch. Use a posture reminder - this will help you create long lasting back-friendly habits. Have a postural evaluation every year, just like you’d have a health check. Eco Vegan Gal Whitney Lauritsen’s tips to go vegan: You don’t need to be perfect. Allow yourself time to transition. Don’t be afraid of what other people think. There’s a lot to learn about veganism; it’s harder than going vegetarian. Give yourself the resources (podcasts, documentaries, blogs, etc.) to make it easier to transition. Add more plants to your diet; we’ve got some great tips for this coming up in Episode 204 with Vegan Bros! She makes green sexy and cool, she’s a best-selling author and eco Marry Poppins for the new Millennium. We couldn’t think of anyone better to celebrate 200 episodes of the Food Heals Podcast: the gorgeous Sophie Uliano. If you’ve tried and tried to make good habits stick but never quite got there, Sophie’s got the perfect event for you. But first, we’re going to bust some health & beauty myths. Myth 1: Synthetic chemicals are bad, and “natural” ingredients always better and safer. Well, first off, the term “natural” is not regulated at all, so anyone can put that on their label. And when it comes to synthetics, well, that just means “made in a lab.” Let’s take the top four ingredients that really make a difference to your skin: Vitamin C (in the form of ascorbic acid), retinoids, hydroxyacids and peptides. These need to be used in their synthetic forms to be stable. They might be “chemicals” but they’re completely safe for your skin. Best Skin Care Ingredients to Fade Sun Spots Fast: For sensitive skin/prone to breakouts: beta hydroxyl acid (BHA) that contains willow bark which will also gets rid of your black heads. For not so sensitive skin: alpha hydroxy acid to melt away the dead skin cells and reveal your glow. Our favorite brands: Sunshine Botanicals Pumpkin Power Peal; Alpha H; MyChell. Myth 2: Everyone should use retinols. Yes, but also no. Actually, retinols are something everyone should use because as our skin gets older, it thins - that’s what makes under eyes appearing darker. Retinoids help to thicken skin. BUT prescription-strength retinoids can be too harsh and cause damage. It’s all in the dosage. You need a tiny amount, and if your skin is sensitive you need to look out for the gentler forms of retinol. Myth 3: Lectins are really bad for you. Lectins are protein molecules found in almost all vegetables. They’re the plant’s protection mechanism, so can cause digestive upset if eaten raw because some lectins are toxic, for example the ones found in red kidney beans (phytohaemagglutinin) - which is why you should never eat a raw bean! But lately everyone’s been talking about how bad they are for you, and how “dangerous” it may be to eat plants. Let’s get real: there’s no way eating a wholefoods plant-based diet is ever dangerous. It’s the most natural way of eating. What’s more, most lectins are destroyed by cooking. Myth 4: Juicing is better than smoothies. Juices are great, but smoothies are better. Mother Nature created the whole fruit - when you juice you take out so many of the healing nutrients, like the fiber, which keeps your digestive system ticking over nicely. It’s important to eat the whole plant, and smoothies help you do exactly that. Smoothies win. Want more gorgeously green tips from Sophie? Check out our Thanksgiving and New Year’s episodes! Affectionately known as Mary Poppins for the new millennium, Gorgeously Green’s Sophie Uliano is a New York Times bestselling author passionate about helping people live life in a more holistic way (check out her previous episode 178). And you know our other two guests from episodes 112, 151 and 179, Joy and Jay the Jing Slingers, superfood organic chefs, experts in anti-aging, longevity and tonic herbalism, and authors of the Food with Benefits recipe book. They’ve cracked the code to create culinary masterpieces packed with health-boosting superfoods and tonic herbs. We couldn’t think of anyone better to start the year with! Let’s set those New Year intentions! How can we feel more empowered, more gorgeous, and healthier than ever? First tip: resolutions are out! New year’s resolutions simply don’t work. In fact, over 90% fail. Why? One reason is because when we set ourselves rigid goals, we set ourselves up to not carry them through long term, and this leads to feelings of shame, blame and judgement. The underlying emotion is: I’m not good enough. And that feeling makes positive change almost impossible, and keeps you feeling like a failure. So much for a “happy” new year! We all want change because we think it’s going to make us happier. It might be losing weight, getting a new job, buying a bigger house, getting married. But that’s the lie. Because happiness doesn’t come from external factors. Happiness comes within. If you can be happy by being grateful with what you have right now, you’re vibrating at a higher energy, and that’s when beautiful things happen. So why not ditch the new year’s resolutions, and have a new year’s evolution instead? Evolve to be more at home and comfortable in your own skin, be more present, and be there for those who matter in your life. Here are our New Year VIP Health Panel’s tips on making your 2018 happier and healthier than ever! • Take baby steps—otherwise you won’t keep it up long term. Make small manageable goals that are sustainable. • Return to the present—when you’re present, time becomes more malleable. It’s not about the coming year: it’s about the now. • Change the way your talk to yourself. Set intentions in a gentle way and trust in the flow of the Universe. • Have a rampage of gratitude. Wake up and be grateful for your pillow, the roof over your head, the comfort of your body… If you start your day with gratitude, you open your heart to see the beauty all around you. • Open yourself to guidance. The Universe will steer you to the right path. • Expand your perspective to get yourself out of the ego state that locks you into your mind. • Be willing to take what you want—there’s no need for shame. • Be grounded in the present—what’s going on with you right now? Journaling can help you work out what you’re feeling, and let go of difficult emotions. • Realize that the ups and downs are all part of the experience of life, and part of being human. It’s almost Thanksgiving — an exciting time of year to be grateful for what you have. But it can also be a stressful time for many. The holidays can be full of triggers — family, food, grief — sparked by an uncle whose politics you deplore, being tempted by unhealthy dishes, or the memory of lost loved ones who used to share the holidays with you. These gatherings can be so emotionally charged that they can destroy your health goals —raising your stress level and leading you to having that third helping of pecan pie. You’re not alone. Today, we’re deep-diving into the emotional triggers the holidays can bring up with special guest, Sophie Uliano, to help you have a happy, healthy Thanksgiving. After all, this is the time for gratitude, togetherness, and love. Sophie Uliano’s Tips for a Healthy Happy Thanksgiving Sophie's mission is to help you feel amazing in your own skin and be excited about who you are. We are delighted our Gorgeously Green girlfriend shared some of her favorite Thanksgiving tips to help keep your vibration high this holiday season: Be prepared on every front. If you’re going into a difficult family situation, spend a few days getting ready. Anticipate what might happen and decide how you will react. Journaling is extremely helpful to begin the process of letting go of those feelings. If you’re going away for a few days, pack some healthy treats to take with you (granola, healthy smoothie mix, nuts, almond milk, etc.). Remember what the holidays are about: It’s about love and spending time with people you care about and being grateful for the good in your life. Underneath the triggers, stress, and possible arguments, we’re all one. We are human beings and we all want to be loved. So let’s give some love and gratitude during the holidays! Stay tuned because Sophie will be back for our New Year special episode to talk about how you can detox your home with organic and natural products. "If I had to do it all over again, I would not choose chemotherapy.  I would choose the natural treatment and use Gerson therapy." ~ Jill Tomback Today's episode tells the story of our friend, Jill Tomback who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25.  Jill  shares her story of getting the diagnosis, how she chose her treatment, the difficult decision to get a double mastectomy and ultimately how she healed her body.  One of the incredible things that you will hear Jill talk about is the toll that chemotherapy took on her body.  She was left weak and depleted, with virtually no immune system.  Jill underwent different types of chemo and radiation, and although she was able to aid in her recovery with acupuncture, she will still tell you that the Western medicine choices are terrible.  Jill has educated herself since her diagnosis and is firm in her decision that she will never choose chemo or radiation again.  Instead, Jill says she would opt for Gerson Therapy. Gerson therapy is illegal in the United States.  Jill even discussed this option with her Oncologist at one point, and all he could do is repeat this sentence.  "I am only allowed to recommend the types of treatment that we have discussed. "  In probing further, Jill got very clear on the fact that despite the fact that Gerson Therapy has a higher success rate for cancer than chemo does, her Oncologist was completely prohibited from recommending that as an option.  If you have never heard of Gerson Therapy, essentially it is a full blown assault on cancer, in the same way that chemo is, but instead of using highly toxic drugs, it utilizes massive doses of fresh juice to flood the body with all the nutrients it needs to fight.  Then to remove the toxins from your body, coffee enemas would be used.  There are lots of resources available to educate yourself on Gerson Therapy. So ask yourself, are you truly doing things you are passionate about on a regular basis? Are you giving an outlet to your creativity or are you stifling it and saying, “I’ll take that painting class next month” or I’ll write my novel in a few years when I have more time.” I have news for you. Today, we have a packed studio at the Food Heals Podcast studio.  Today’s topic of healing your pets through natural therapies, has compelled us to reveal the lurkers in our studio!  Not only do we have special guest, Dan Masciarelli, but we also have Obie, Jackson and Charlotte. Charlotte is an 11 year old Beagle and Jackson is a 2 year old terrier mix, and they belong to Allison.  Suzy has Obie, her 9 year old Bichon Frise that resembles an ewok.  His name is a tip of the hat to none other than Star Wars.  Our confession is that the dogs are actually always in the studio with us.  They think we are are getting together for a play date, when it is time to record a podcast.  They have no idea we are actually working here!  So, today we are letting the dogs take the spotlight. Today’s episode about healing your pets, comes as a result of us healing Jackson.  So, to help tell the story of Jackson’s healing, we have invited Jackson’s Dad, Dan Masciarelli to the show to help share the story of Jackson’s healing.  We are very excited to share this story and hope that many other beloved pets can be healed too.   Being hailed as Sex and the City for Food, The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!   The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health!
