The Nerds return! We take a look back at 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home to see if it holds up!
You'd think the devastating climax of Avengers: Endgame wouldn't be the best way to set up Peter Parker's lighthearted romp across Europe, and yet that's exactly what the MCU deployed as an Endgame follow-up. Critics lapped it up, but real fans know SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is as empty and superficial as Mysterio's illusions. Listen to Alex & Julio yearn for the days when Spidey had adventures that mattered!TIMELINE00:01:24 Spider-Man: Far From Home00:15:41 Contrarians Corner- Wanna know how we really feel about SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME? Nick and Angela continue their Christmas tradition and welcome a Hollywood star to Dish HQ. Born and raised in South-West London, Tom Holland's career began on the West End, when he won the part of Billy Elliot in 2008. He went on to star in the critically-acclaimed film, The Impossible with Naomi Watts in 2012. He is best known for his role as Spider-Man and his first foray into the Marvel Universe came in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. He has since reprised the role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and several Avengers movies. Tom Holland is here to celebrate the launch of Bero, his new alcohol-free beer. Angela prepares a festive feast of slow-cooked pork shoulder with peas & mint with roast potatoes with rosemary salt, sticky pigs in blankets, the best cauliflower cheese, by Martha Collison and orange & honey glazed carrots. In another "Lost Tapes," Ryan and Dylan reminisce about the summer movie season of 2019 and review the original Joker.
Josh Hallam and Alice Oliver (Just Films & That podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Josh's choice Spider-Man: No Way Home. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) is the third instalment of the Tom Holland Spider-Man Marvel/Sony franchise. Directed by Jon (Spider-Man: Homecoming) Watts, it sees Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Zendaya's MJ, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Jacob Batalon as Ned. Directly following the events from Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker's identity as Spider-Man has been revealed by Mysterio. In an effort to restore things back to normal, Peter visits Dr Stange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell to make Spider-Man's identity a secret again. When the spell goes wrong, it opens up the multiverse and unleashes several entities connected to Peter into this universe. Spider-Man NWH is the highest grossing Spider-Man film and saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their versions of Spider-Man alongside their respective villains. Some of which were included using previous footage rather than new footage. Recommendability scores for Spider-Man NWH were high, with a runtime of two hours and 28 minutes though scores for repeat viewing were lower, to give an overall rating of 4.05. This week, SepTIMEber concludes with another charming British time travel rom-com that segues into fam-dram territory before it reaches the finish line. It's 2013's About Time, written and directed by Richard Curtis, and starring Domhnall Gleason, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Lydia Wilson, Vanessa Kirby and an uncredited Richard E. Grant. It's once again the final Friday of the month, as even this theme month can not stop the inexorable march of time, and Hayley's got the keys to the vault this time around, as she's chosen to nominate a cozy comfort film that's come to mean a great deal to her over the last decade. It's a cute movie with a sharp premise that plays a bit like if Edge of Tomorrow was a romantic comedy -- at least as far as it's interested in being a romantic comedy, anyway. We debate, as always. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, About Time is not currently available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but is rentable on YouTube, Cineplex and Amazon. And you can nab it for $5 on DVD at your local Sunrise Records. Other works discussed on this episode include Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek (2009), Spider-Man: Far From Home, San Andreas, Lost, Super 8, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Arrested Development, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Early Edition, Phantom Thread, Saltburn and Love, Actually..., among others. We'll be back next week to kick off a new theme month as we put SepTIMEber in the past and move on to four weeks of frights, as Spooktober begins with a meeting of the minds from George A. Romero and Stephen King: 1982's Creepshow, which is currently streaming north of the border on Hollywood Suite. The rest of the Spooktober schedule includes 1408, The Birds, and our October canon consideration The Thing! It's gonna be a great month, so come on back, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week the South African camera operator and steadicam operator, Ashlea Downes. Among Ashlea's credits are the popular Netflix series Bridgerton on which she is working with a previous guest on this podcast, Alicia Robbins. Ashlea has also worked on House of the Dragon, Wicked, Skyfall, Spider-Man: Far From Home and His Dark Materials. Ashlea was born in Pretoria, South African in 1985. Her father, Ant, was an accountant and business owner, and her mother, Alex, an artist and art teacher. Her brother, Scott, is a hand painted sign artist. Ashlea grew up enjoying sports and the outdoors; she was a competitive rider, taking after her mother who was a keen horsewoman. She also swam, played water polo and netball but academia was not her rap. Instead she followed her father's interest in photography and her mother's talent for art. Her love of wildlife gave her aspirations to be a wildlife documentary filmmaker so it was no surprise that these influences steered her to the AFDA Film School where she graduated with a degree in Cinematography. After college, her relentless determination and ambition to break into the industry opened up opportunities that would prove the foundation of her career, and soon she would find herself being called up for the Bond movie Skyfall filming in Turkey and then to the UK to film at the London Olympics. A turning point in her career was moving to the UK shortly after where she met her partner and found steady work from trainee to 2nd AC/ loader and then making her mark as a camera operator. Ashlea lives between Reading, England and Cape Town, South Africa with her husband Karl Taggart. She is currently working as a camera operator on Season 4 of Bridgerton. Editor - Dan Lebental ACE BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F editor Dan Lebental not only took on the daunting task of bringing back a beloved character that audiences haven't seen in thirty years, but he did it with one hand. The other was working simultaneously on another Bruckheimer blockbuster, BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE. With the help of his long-time assistant, Dawn Michelle King, and his trusty "embedded sound design" workflow, Dan was able to pull off making both films in fine style. BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F sees the titular hero return to Beverly Hills to aid his adult daughter after her life is threated when she gets too close to a crime ring being investigated by Axel's old friend, Billy Rosewood. DAN LEBENTAL Editor Dan Lebental ACE seems to be the man to call when it's time for big laughs and big action. Aside from the many films Dan has done in the MCU, including IRON MAN, IRON MAN 2, ANT MAN, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, and SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, Dan's work can also be found in ELF, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES. We're in "let's look back at 2023" mode as we discuss our fave flicks of last year (so far) and also answer listeners' emails, tweets and YouTube comments. It wasn't a great 12 months at the movies, although we still have to see a lot of red-letter titles before we can make a final call on that. The writers' and actors' strikes were huge stories that might have long-lasting effects, but apart from the whopping successes of Barbenheimer, Sound Of Freedom and Taylor Swift's record-destroying concert film, the biggest story of '23 was the massive failure of most of the superhero movies released by Marvel and DC. And then, yes, we dropped some names and (finally!) responded to our loyal listeners who took the time to write to us. This 559th episode of Have You Ever Seen is a tidy 30 minutes, so get cozy on New Year's Day and spend some time with the Ellises as we tell you what we thought of the year that was. Well, Actually: Ryan messed up the names of superhero movies a few times in this episode. Chris Nolan directed Batman Begins, not Batman Returns. Also, he twice referred to the megahit from a few years ago as Spider-Man: Far From Home, when of course it was No Way Home. It's another year, but Sparkplug Coffee continues to offer our fans a 20% discount if they'll just use our "HYES" promo code. Go to "sparkplug.coffee/hyes". Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersAfter this week, the MCU's Multiverse Saga moves into high gear!
