Listeners Choice Month continues! In this week's episode, the guys are "treated" to the kangaroo/martial arts/YA (?) movie Warriors of Virtue. This is a mystifying movie in many ways but the guys dive deep into the story arcs that are abruptly dropped, Angus Macfayden's amazing and highly sexual performance, the jumpy slow-motion used in EVERY fight scene, the kangaroos themselves having no personalities and much more. Plus: Brendan reveals a sacred childhood connection to the movie. Next week: Listeners Choice Month continues with... The Genesis Code! This week the ghouls discuss one of film's greatest tough watches, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986). From wiki: “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a 1986 American psychological horror crime film directed and co-written by John McNaughton about the random crime spree of a serial killer who seemingly operates with impunity. It stars Michael Rooker in his debut as the nomadic killer Henry, Tom Towles as Otis, a prison buddy with whom Henry is living, and Tracy Arnold as Becky, Otis's sister. The characters of Henry and Otis are loosely based on convicted real-life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole.” But first! Drew Barrymore scabs, which is a bummer, but she apologized so she gets the Bloodhaus Seal of Approval. The hosts talk all about Hollywood unions, Drusilla goes to Vidiots to see Videodrome and they discuss which format is the appropriate one to watch the film. Josh watched Massacre at Central High (1976). Also discussed: Serial Mom, Cannibal Holocaust, Faces of Death, Salo: 120 Days of Sodom, Color Out of Space, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Happiness, Josh learns about the X rating, Karina Longworth, Marvel dialogue, Chicago, The Blues Brothers, Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, Kansas City Bomber, Slapshot, various serial killers, Streetwise, the morality of true crime, Ryan Murphy, and more! On Episode 23 of our show "Grindhouse Pizzeria" which is dedicated to all things encompassing various Grindhouse, Drive-In, and Exploitation genres; we will be reviewing and dissecting a true powerhouse titan of a film with the chilling and unsettling "HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER". Directed by John McNaughton (The Borrower) and starring Michael Rooker in his feature film debut at the titular Henry. This film follows the methodical Henry and his roommate Otis (portrayed in a chilling early role by the late Tom Towles) as they lay bloody waste to whomever crosses their paths. Caught in the middle of this murdering duo is Otis' innocent sister Becky (played by Tracy Arnold). Henry leaves us with the age old question of 'who will survive and what will be left of them.' Join the two of them for a grueling good time! Come on in at the Grindhouse Pizzeria, pull up a chair and grab yourself a slice! "It's always the same and it's always different."

Needless to say, Corey has a lot of enthusiasm for Night of the Living Dead (1990) as he showruns the breakdown lol! While co-host Zak also saw it in the theater when it originally came out, this version of George Romero's classic tale didn't get quite as much replay in his youth. Forget about any other movie that might share this title! The battle for supremacy is right here, right now. First up, Rachel Ward and her one-room Australian schoolhouse are invaded by masked kidnappers. Can the schoolchildren come of age, all too quickly, in a struggle for survival to escape? Rural Australia is a dangerous place in Fortress (1985). Then, it's time for international action sensation, Christopher Lambert! He and his wife are not particularly fortunate to be pregnant, it seems, as they find themselves in a futuristic prison in the year 2017! Be careful to avoid that yellow line and definitely stay away from the red! Or your tummy might just explode from the effects of that horrible intestinator that they implanted inside your body! Wait, what? This is the world of Stuart Gordon's Fortress (1992). And then from there, the Common Craig and Nicole decide the victor! Which is the last movie standing, earning the right to keep its title???

Episode 400 is coming next week, so we needed to clean some of the piles of reviews we have sitting around in Dread Media Global Headquarters. First up, Duane and Desmond take a look at the Canadian horror comedy Wolfcop. Then Desmond settles in for a barrage of reviews from across all media. Books: Angel of the Abyss by Ed Kurtz, Facial by Jeff Strand, and Human Monsters by Gregory Lamberson. A comic book: Shaolin Cowboy: Shemp Buffet. And another film: Muck. Of course, it would be weird if we all of a sudden stopped playing music, right? "American Werewolf in Calgary" by The Browns, "Devil's Blood" by Cancer Bats, "Clones (We're All)" by Alice Cooper, "Unseen Tormentor" by Early Man, and "Killer on the Lamb" by Banjo & Sullivan. RIP Geofrrey Lewis, Tom Towles, and Herb Trimpe. Send feedback to: feedback@dreadmedia.net, or 206.278.5257. Follow @DevilDinosaurJr and @dreadmedia on Twitter! Join the Facebook group! Lee and Daniel are back for part 2 of our sex comedy series; exploring the value or lack thereof of selected films from the genre. This time out we look at one of Daniel's favourites growing up in "The Malibu Bikini Shop" (1986), and then we move over to two loosely connected films, also from the mid-1980s, in "Hot Dog... The Movie" (1984) and "Hamburger: The Motion Picture" (1986). We also cover two recently deceased character actors in Geoffrey Lewis and Tom Towles; things we've recently watched, and general film nostalgia. Featured music: "Hamburgers For America" by Jack Turner, performed by Bill Mueller.
The last in our series devoted to the films of The Cannon Group, we start with some nerd news talking the deaths of Tom Towles and Geoffrey Lewis, talk a little Arrested Development and the upcoming remake of Gremlins. Then we delve into the final regions of our Cannon Madness bracket looking at the Strokin' region, the Fantasy/Sci-Fi region, and the Horror region and talk about Texas Chainsaw Massacre part 2, Masters of The Universe, Hot Chili and more!
Loosely based on the life of Virginia-born serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, who went on an unheard of "confession spree." (he'd confessed to hundreds of killings, with a handful actually attributable to him) Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is one of the more infamous horror films ever made. The film follows Henry and his sleazy roommate Otis, who take in the latter's sister Becky who's coming to live and work in Chicago from out of state. Henry's got serious mommy issues and gradually introduces Henry to his psychopathic exploits. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer has a documentary feel and a super low budget, which adds to the harrowing atmosphere. Made on the cheap for under $150,000, Michael Rooker, Tom Towles and Tracy Arnold give outstanding performances. This movie was so good, even Roger Ebert, notoriously tough on horror films, said it was a "low budget tour de force." We couldn't wait to discuss the film on the Really Awful Movies Podcast. It's one of our mutual favorites. Listen to us wax poetic about this chilling gem, and that time Jeff met Michael Rooker.
The Razor Edge of Death.... Welcome back to another Horror 101 podcast. We're back from Fan Expo. We'll cover how it went and who we met. After listening to writer/director David Schmoeller tell us that he's a big fan of anything Stuart Gordon we felt it was time to unlock the Full Moon Entertainment vault with another Charles Band produced film, The Pit and the Pendulum. We'll compare this 1991 version with the Roger Corman/Vincent Price 1961 film. We'll explore the original Edgar Allan Poe short story and introduce you to Lance Henriksen at his diabolical best. From the moment The Pit and the Pendulum opens with an exhumation of a corpse to be put on trial for witchcraft you know you're in for a great Stuart Gordon flick also starring Jeffrey Combs, Tom Towles and Frances Bay. Join us for another Horror 101 podcast and fall in love with the macabre work of one of Full Moon's greatest pictures. Show highlights: 1:00 Welcome back....we're back from Fan Expo with big smiles and empty pockets. 4:25 The history of Edgar Allan Poe's Pit and the Pendulum 7:10 Stuart Gordon + Jeffrey Combs = GOLD 8:50 Exhuming the corpse... 11:30 Lance Henriksen at his best... 13:00 Nood surprises us!! 14:00 The late, great Oliver Reed and his cameo... 15:00 Esmerelda....the witch that goes BOOM! 18:00 LOOK UP!! 20:19 Discussing the film... 22:05 The wonderful music of Richard Band... 22:53 The legacy of Full Moon Entertainment... 28:20 Conclusion....thanks for listening!!
He's not Freddy. He's not Jason. He's real... In the same vein as our last show, we delve deep into the mind of another twisted real life killer. In 1986, with a meager $100,000 to play with John McNaughton made his first feature film a true story horror movie about a pair of notorious killers that plagued the United States in the 70s and 80s. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a low key, savage snapshot of the lives of two dangerous men. Walking Dead fans should not let this movie pass. It's Michael Rooker's first performance and you will never look at him the same way again. Mr. Rooker, along with Tom Towles deliver strong, vicious performances that will leave you cold. Join us as we discuss this hidden gem that almost never saw the light of day. Henry was so ahead of it's time that it helped influence the MPAA to create an NC-17 rating, finally rescuing artistic adult films from the dreaded X rating. It's a bleak and well crafted road of violence and mayhem. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS: 01:00 Buckle up!! We're going down that road again... 02:10 The real Henry Lee Lucas (and Ottis Tool) 04:50 The Genesis of Henry... 07:09 An opening of death... 08:53 "Yeah.....I killed my mama." 10:30 Teaching the fine art of murder... 12:30 The family holocaust 15:25 "Adios mother fucker!" (bravo to Tom Towles) 17:35 Poor Becky... 19:56 There is ZERO glamour...(the curse of playing crazies well) 21:55 Helping to conjure NC-17 films...(final thoughts) 23:12 Roger Ebert praises Henry... 24:05 Conclusion....facts of the REAL Henry and get ready for Maniac!! Thanks for listening!!
