In this week's edition of Singletrack News, we break down a major development in the UK trail running scene after Ourea Events - the organizers behind races like Dragon's Back, Cape Wrath Ultra, and the Northern Traverse - announced they are ceasing trading, putting several iconic races in jeopardy and leaving athletes uncertain about the future of some of the sport's most ambitious point-to-point events. We also discuss confusion surrounding UTMB's new broadcast partnership with FloSports. After speculation online that UTMB races could move behind a paywall, organizers clarified that the UTMB Live stream will remain free, with FloSports serving as a simulcast partner in the United States.Elsewhere, we dig into UTMB's 2026 live broadcast schedule, which includes 10 races across the World Series - but notably excludes Golden Ticket events like Chianti and Canyons. We also cover:UTMB CEO Fabrice Perrin raising concerns about “ambush marketing” in trail runningThe debut of the Big Alta 100K in Marin HeadlandsPreviewing the Chianti by UTMB Golden Ticket battleCourtney Dauwalter lining up at Tenerife Blue Trail as an early season testNike recruiting ultrarunners for a 15-week research residency at the Nike Sports Research LabAnd our content picks of the week, including a conversation between Harry Styles and Haruki Murakami on how running fuels creativityPartners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next orderNorda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever madeRaide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains Janji - premium trail running apparelKodiak Cakes - my favorite oatmeal and pancakes Support the show

It's been common wisdom in endurance sports that the further the race distance gets, the longer it takes to figure it out. But every rule needs an exception to prove it and on this count one needs look no further than the career of Molly Seidel. After a gold-studded NCAA career at Notre Dame winning titles at 3000, 5000, 10000 and cross country, Seidel's star only seemed to rise higher as the distances grew greater. She made her marathon debut in 2020 at the US Olympic Trials, proving a quick-study at the event with a stunning 2nd placing showing and a spot on the US Olympic Team headed to Tokyo. A year and a half later, at those pandemic-postponed Olympic Games, She'd once again outperform expectations to run away from the best of the best en route to a brilliant bronze medal. Fast forward to today and it seems her reputation for moving up in distance and throwing down continues to hold true, even with yet another change of surface. In January she marked the start of a new chapter on the trail scene with a win and course record clocking at the Banderas 50k in Texas. Weeks later, she would take another huge leap forward at the famously competitive Black Canyon 100k in Arizona. Facing some of the best trail talent in the world, Seidel turned a lack of experience into gold, claiming a 4th-place finish and snagging an elusive “Golden Ticket”, securing her a place in the biggest ultra of them all, the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run. Today, Molly joins the show to recap her incredible rise through the trail running ranks, what it's looked like to double her race distance with every start, and how she's applying the lessons of a legendary career on the roads and track to a the new challenges of the trails. More Northern Traverse training, and Gary is starting to feel the strain. The trails are stunning enough to make the miles drift by, but the sheer volume—and the constant need to stay upright, are beginning to take their toll. Our coaches chip in with some wisdom on running when you're a new parent (spoiler: sleep is a luxury, snacks are a currency).

Send a textWant to see a kid light up after nailing a steep climb? We sat down with pros Joseph Gray, Annie Hughes, and Dreama Walton to unpack how a three-day Colorado Springs Trail Running Camp turns second through eighth graders into confident movers and thoughtful trail stewards. Set in the shade of North Cheyenne Canyon, the camp blends short runs, hands-on drills, and creek-side cool-downs with simple lessons on leave no trace, hydration, sunscreen, and gear that actually fits the terrain. We dig into why starting young matters. While many U.S. runners first meet endurance on the track, this camp gives kids a feel for real trails: how to lean into climbs, place their feet on descents, pass safely on tight corners, and choose lines that build control. The coaches demonstrate good and bad form so kids see it before they try it. A nutritionist stops by to explain fueling on hot days, and a gear segment demystifies tread, traction, and midsoles. Groups split by ability so smaller kids stay close and older athletes can stretch out; everyone circles back for obstacle courses, stretching, and yoga.Race day ties it together. A relay format teaches pacing, teamwork, and confidence, with mantras written on the back of bibs to meet the tough moments head-on. Thanks to sponsors and community support, the registration stays family-friendly and often includes shoes, shirts, bottles, snacks, and electrolytes—lowering the barrier to a sport that can change a child's life. We also share dates, location, capacity, and how volunteers can help keep kids safe, stoked, and seen.If you know a young runner—or a curious newbie—send them this and help them register.

In this week's edition of Singletrack News, Kilian Jornet announces he'll attempt the Western States–UTMB double in 2026, reviving a strategy some thought was fading from elite playbooks. We also examine Ironman's decision to ban in-race content creation, including smart glasses, GoPros, and phones. Is this about safety, competitive fairness, or the beginning of a broader shift in endurance sports culture? Could trail running follow?Elsewhere, we break down Abby Levine's analysis of the Western States 2026 field - including the surprising stat about back-to-back women's champions, the depth emerging from Golden Ticket races like Black Canyon and CCC, and what still remains up for grabs at Chianti and Canyons.Plus:Chuckanut announces a first-ever livestream in partnership with Mountain OutpostTransgrancanaria previewNike ACG's experimental “smallest backyard ultra” activation in MilanITRA's 2025 Women in Trail Running participation reportAravaipa launches The Cutoff film tourUTMB postpones its Puerto Vallarta event following regional unrestPartners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next order (https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=singletrack)Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/singletrack)Janji - premium trail running apparel (https://janji.com/pages/singletrack)Support the show

Another week closer to the 2026 Northern Traverse, and Eddie and Gary are deep in the trenches of training, some days fun times, some days sad times, all of it inching them forward. Listeners are in the thick of their own big‑race prep too, including one brave soul wondering whether you can smash a road marathon and then step up to an ultra. Winter bugs are everywhere as well, and everyone seems to be sniffling through their long runs. When should you ease off, and when is it fine to crack on? What does it mean to say trail running is for everyone — when not everyone feels safe at the start line?In this deeply honest and urgent conversation, Corrine sits down with trail runner and immigration attorney Carolina Rubio-MacWright to talk about what's happening right now in immigrant communities — and why our sport cannot pretend it's separate from the political reality of the world we live in.Carolina shares what it's like carrying her residency card on runs, fielding messages from athletes asking whether it's safe to race, and helping race directors develop emergency plans for potential ICE raids. She speaks candidly about what meaningful action actually looks like — from buddy systems and mutual aid to card-writing campaigns for detained families. This episode is not abstract. It's about real runners. Real families. Real fear. And real responsibility. As Carolina reminds us, silence benefits the status quo. Action builds community.Feisty Strong Retreat in Atlanta - April 17-19, 2026: https://feisty.co/events/feisty-strong-retreat-atlanta/@feisty_media@trail.society

We look back on his huge 2025 season, dig into what he's building toward in 2026, and then take a deep dive into Gary's new best friend: The Albon App… or Ascend, as it's now known after the recent rebrand.Jon brings his trademark clarity & humility. Whether you're a mountain runner, an OCR die‑hard, or just someone who loves hearing from athletes who truly get it, this episode is packed with insight, laughs, and a few surprises! Thanks to Precision Fuel & Hydration for supporting our February competition. Eli Hemming: From Olympic Triathlon to Trail Ultras, UTMB Goals, and the Joshua Tree TraverseRyan Maguire sits down with Eli Hemming, former elite professional triathlete turned trail runner, for a wide-ranging conversation about reinvention, endurance, and what drives an athlete when the Olympic dream doesn't pan out the way you planned.Eli grew up in triathlon literally from birth. His mom was a triathlete and swim coach, and he was racing by age seven. What started as something social and skill-based eventually evolved into elite draft-legal Olympic-distance racing on the international circuit. He came within reach of the Tokyo Olympics before a broken foot derailed his qualification, and when he looked ahead at another four-year grind toward Paris, with all the travel and time away from family it would require, he decided it wasn't worth it.What came next surprised even him. A race in Buena Vista, Colorado cracked open a new world, and trail running took hold fast. He found a coach in David Roche, started stacking results, and eventually ended up toeing the line against Roche himself at the Broken Arrow Skyrace, a moment that captures just how quickly his trajectory shifted.Ryan and Eli also get into his relationship with his wife Tabor, their shared Adidas sponsorship, and a Joshua Tree traverse FKT attempt the two are chasing together. They dig into what makes Joshua Tree such a singular and strange place to run, and why the project matters to both of them personally. On the racing front, Eli's 2026 calendar includes Black Canyon 100K and a return to Desert Rats 100K, where Ryan first spotted him, to earn his way into UTMB week races. UTMB itself is the long-term goal, even though he's only raced up to 100K so far. His best trail performance to date? OCC during UTMB week in Chamonix, and he lights up talking about the atmosphere there. The conversation also gets honest about the harder parts of moving up in distance, overheating issues, a fried hypothalamus affecting heat regulation, fueling and hydration mistakes, and how his training philosophy is evolving around high volume without necessarily high mileage, muscular endurance work, and staying adaptable.

Send a text#369 - For us runners, it's a constant battle between our logical brain and our emotions. Sometimes we need logic and in other times we need our emotions. There are times when one or the other will hurt or help us. Today, I help to break it down so that we can tell the difference. By identifying the differences before we start our runs, it can help a lot, because if the latter stages of a long run or race, we may not have the mental energy to do it. Send us a text#368 - Even us experienced runners goof up. This week's episode is for all runners, beginners and non-beginners who may not remember everything that can help us on our runs and races. I'm probably the one who forgets more of these than anyone! There are so many, I'll probably do a Part 2 in the coming weeks because it doesn't hurt to have a reminder!
