Western States and UTMB are often framed as opposite visions for the future of trail running. One protects through limits. The other protects through growth. But after publishing an episode on that tension, I received an unexpected response from Bob Crowley, former President of the International Trail Running Association (ITRA).Bob argues that both sides may be focused on the wrong thing. What follows is a conversation about culture, stewardship, local races, and whether the values that built trail running can survive success. Somewhere along the way, the debate stops being about Western States and UTMB and becomes something much bigger. Please give us a follow, rate the podcast, and give a review. If you're new to Borderlands, start here.Resources / LinksWestern States Wants to Protect, UTMB Wants to GrowBob's Full Op-edBorderlands.ccLa French TrailRelated EpisodesUltra Running isn't Just RunningPresented by Kiprun.----Borderlands explores trail running through culture, media, and the forces shaping it.Watch on YouTubeRead on Substack

This week we were lucky enough to spend an hour with the incredible David Miller. It was such a treat to hear the stories behind so many of the iconic images that define our sport. It turned into a super‑relaxed chat about running, Zoom vs Teams, the Barkley Marathons, and of course his upcoming book — SPINE: The Story of the Montane Winter Spine Race.SPINE is the definitive visual story of Britain's most brutal ultramarathon, a premium photography book by David Miller, created in collaboration with Vertebrate Publishing and the organisers of the Montane Winter Spine Race.KICKSTARTER - https://bit.ly/4oDqw2gHARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEASUNGOD - Use code TEA15 for 15% off your order - https://www.sungod.co/en-gbBEARHUG - Click the link to receive 15% off your order.https://getabearhug.avln.me/c/PAmERmkwPealContent contains affiliate links which help support this channel at no cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Run The Wild - https://runthewild.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Yellow Belly Ultra - https://yellowbellyultras.co.uk/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/

We focus on how to prepare the body for long-duration efforts and how to recover effectively afterward. Our guest is Stefan Klinglmair, COO of Biogena. We explain that Biogena is an Austrian family-owned company that develops and manufactures its own micronutrient supplements, prioritizing quality, transparency, and holistic nutrition. This includes rigorous testing of all products and processes for purity and tolerability.A major focus of our conversation is sports supplements and anti-doping safety. We discuss how every product in their sports line is lab-tested and listed on the Cologne List (Kölner Liste). We also talk about their collaboration with athletes and how they tailor products to meet actual performance needs. In the second part, we cover recovery after intense trail runs. We explain the "anabolic window" immediately following exertion, where protein and amino acids are essential. We discuss essential amino acids (EAAs), BCAAs, and the value of a well-balanced, easily digestible protein supplement. Finally, we turn our attention to the role of micronutrients in supporting sleep, the immune system, and gut health. We talk about magnesium, melatonin, vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, selenium, and L-glutamine, as well as the "open window" phenomenon following strenuous exercise. We conclude with simple biohacking approaches, including sleep optimization, recovery techniques, altitude training, and cold exposure.Chapters0:31 Performance, Health, and Recovery 2:42 About Biogena 4:32 Purity in Sports 6:19 Athletes as Partners 8:31 Why Recovery Matters 12:13 The Anabolic Window 13:38 Using Amino Acids 16:00 Plant-Based Protein Reviewed 18:23The "Protein Bucket" 19:45 Taste and Digestibility 20:39 The Right Protein Mix 22:37 Micronutrients as a Foundation24:37 Magnesium and Sleep 26:45 The Open Window 29:41 Strengthening the Immune System 31:04 Gut Health and L-Glutamine 32:31 Smart Basic Supplementation 35:19 A Critical Look at High-Protein Diets 37:45 Simple Biohacking Tips 39:33 Looking Back 39:56 Team and Transparency 40:53 Key Takeaways 41:23 Ready for the Start

Western States and UTMB have become the two most influential institutions in trail running, but beneath the debate over lotteries, race series, and growth is a deeper question: when something becomes successful, how do you protect it?Josh explores why UTMB believes trail running is important enough to scale globally while Western States believes it's important enough not to. Along the way, he examines scarcity, culture, the hidden cost of success, and whether the thing worth protecting was ever the race itself. Please give us a follow, rate the podcast, and give a review. If you're new to Borderlands, start here.Topics / Timestamps01:33 Two Philosophies of Trail Running03:19 Is Growth in Trail Running Corruption?06:13 The Scale Problem in Trail Running11:06 What Cultre are We Protecting in Trail Running?15:50 The Supply Chain of Trail Running CultureResources / Links8 Bit Trail RunningJosh Rosenthal on IGBorderlands.ccLa French TrailRelated EpisodesUltra Running isn't Just RunningPresented by Kiprun.----Borderlands explores trail running through culture, media, and the forces shaping it.Watch on YouTubeRead on Substack

Send us Fan Mail#387 - Every year when my Sober Birthday comes around, I like to talk about it on the show. I pick a different theme or aspect of sobriety and what it means to me. There are thousands of us sober/clean runners out there. I can think of few activities that are as great for those getting sober or clean than running. My theme this year is being honest with ourselves. This applies to both running and the rest of our lives. Many times we're not honest with ourselves in our running. It's time to be honest. If you're injured, then get help. If you're slow and you run, you're a runner. And so on..... give yourself props, you deserve it. Coach Loretta and Coach Lindsay sit down with Dr. Scott McLean (Michigan Medicine) to talk all things sun protection for runners, along with a new initiative called Sunbeasts. They cover why runners are especially at risk for sun damage, how to monitor moles and skin changes, and practical ways to protect yourself—like choosing effective SPF, reapplying strategies, and using protective clothing. The conversation also touches on real-world application at major endurance events like UTMB, Western States (WSER), and the Huron 100.
Modern trail running shoes are better than they've ever been. So why do so many runners still find themselves drawn to older designs like the Nike ACG LDV?Josh and Inky use one nostalgic shoe to explore a bigger question: what happens when an industry spends years optimizing toward the same answer? Somewhere between old Nike catalogs, modern trail shoes, and a sea of increasingly similar products, they uncover why certain designs still stop us in our tracks.Shout out to Marty from Global Sales Guys who talks about the Sea of Sameness in outdoor retail. Please give us a follow, rate the podcast, and give a review. If you're new to Borderlands, start here.Resources / LinksThe Mountain That Made ACGInky's Article about theROCKERRelated EpisodesUltra Running isn't Just RunningI Was Wrong About KiprunPresented by Kiprun.----Borderlands explores trail running through culture, media, and the forces shaping it.Watch on YouTubeRead on Substack

Even though Eddie and Gary are on the rebuild, they're still somehow busier than a Greggs on match day. Gary's had a short stay in the comparison trap, but a chance encounter with a real‑life hero gave him the reality check he needed. Both hosts also find themselves openly thirsting over an A‑list movie star. Zero shame from both. We also sing the praises of the humble home gym. We're not talking squat racks. We mean the trusty dumbbell, a couple of resistance bands, and a yoga mat.And to round things off, the coaches chat about the simple brilliance of taking a map out on the trails. Old‑school. Reliable and it doesn't run out of battery halfway up a mountain.HARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEASUNGOD - Use code TEA15 for 15% off your order - https://www.sungod.co/en-gbBEARHUG - Click the link to receive 15% off your order.https://getabearhug.avln.me/c/mtOmrcHyImJoContent contains affiliate links which help support this channel at no cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Run The Wild - https://runthewild.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/
Send us Fan Mail#386 - What do runners think about while we're running? I ask this question and try to answer it with things that I've thought about over the years and I compare that to a study of runners that was done. What do you think about during your runs? Pace, form, food, or maybe all of the above? I also review Haruki Murakami's book "What I Talk About When I Talk Bout Running" that I finally read. In fact his book gave me the idea for this episode. This week we're sharing the mics with friend of the show Katie Kaars-Sijpesteijn. A Salomon and GB athlete, Katie has lined up, and podiumed, at some of the most competitive races out there. But the last 12 months have taken her down a very different path as she chased a sub‑3 road marathon. Not exactly the classic tune‑up for UTS by UTMB 100K, yet it clearly worked… because she stormed her way to 2nd place in a seriously stacked field. We chat about her recent races, the unconventional build‑up, and her journey back to racing as a mother of two young children.HARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEASUNGOD - Use code TEA15 for 15% off your order - https://www.sungod.co/en-gbBEARHUG - Click the link to receive 15% off your order.https://getabearhug.avln.me/c/mtOmrcHyImJoContent contains affiliate links which help support this channel at no cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Run The Wild - https://runthewild.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/

Tim Tollefson returns to Trail Runner Nation for a wide-ranging conversation about what makes trail running special and what happens as the sport continues to grow. Using a "Wheel of Trail Running" format, the discussion lands on two big topics: cultivating the next generation of trail stewards and the ongoing professionalization of trail running. Tim shares how his work with Runners for Public Lands and Mammoth Trail Fest has changed the way he views trails, volunteerism, and the responsibility runners have to give back to the places they love. The conversation explores everything from carrying a small saw on training runs to the challenges and opportunities created by big sponsors, larger race organizations, and growing prize purses. Throughout the episode, Tim makes a compelling case that trail running's future depends on balancing growth with the community values that built the sport. It's an honest look at how runners can help preserve trail culture while welcoming more people into it. Trail running culture loves winners. That's obvious. The sport builds documentaries about them, fills Instagram feeds with them, and spends months debating who will win Western States. But the more Josh thinks about it, the more he wonders whether trail running is actually comfortable with the competitive mindset that creates those winners in the first place. As Western States season begins, this conversation explores the difference between the participation version of trail running and the elite version, why those two worlds often get conflated, and what we miss when we use the values of one to understand the athletes competing in the other. Please give us a follow, rate the podcast, and give a review. If you're new to Borderlands, start here.Topics / Timestamps00:00 Two Sports Sharing One Start Line02:51 The Values That Make Champions05:49 Elite, Professional, and Why It Matters08:38 What Trail Running Rewards11:26 Telling an Inward Story About an Outward Competition14:22 Do We Actually Want Competitors?Resources / LinksBorderlands.ccSalt Lake Foothills Trail Races Josh Rosenthal on IGRelated EpisodesUltra Running isn't Just RunningPresented by Kiprun.----Borderlands explores trail running through culture, media, and the forces shaping it.Watch on YouTubeRead on Substack

Send us Fan Mail#385 - We runners love a challenge! So this week, I'm talking about 12 of the most dangerous trails in the US. They are dangerous for different reasons; some trails have huge elevation gains in short distances, while others have tricky and possibly dangerous trails while others are home to dangerous animals. Which one of these trails frighten you the most? You'll find out which one scares me the most! PS: I didn't include those trails that could be considered mountain climbing as that's not hiking or trail running. Ten years ago, Gary popped his 100‑mile cherry on the Cleveland Way. Countless miles have been covered between then and now, but after a bit of refocusing found himself back on a start line, this time for the Hardmoors 200.Starting in Hull, the route winds through wooded slopes, over rolling hills, and down into deep valleys, before eventually climbing onto the northern escarpment and dropping toward the final stretch of the Wolds Way. At Filey you join the stunning 110‑mile Cleveland Way National Trail.Over the course of the weekend, Gary's race evolved from simply getting the job done to suddenly finding himself in pole position… and then hanging on for dear life as the pack closed in.HARRIER - Use code TATP10 for 10% off - https://harrierrunfree.avln.me/c/qXhnTgIdEMeaXMILES UK - Listeners receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link - https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRFENIX LIGHT LTD - Use code T&T5 for 5% - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/PRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION - Use code TEA2026 for 15% off your first orderPRECISION FUEL & HYDRATION PLANNER - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zSTRAVA - Use code TEA for 20% off an annual membership - #StravaPartner #Adhttps://www.strava.com/subscribe/checkout?code=TEASUNGOD - Use code TEA15 for 15% off your order - https://www.sungod.co/en-gbASCEND APP - Use code TeaandTrails30 to receive 30% off a monthly subscription.https://ascendtrailapp.avln.me/c/MOwNWISPDOwiContent may contain affiliate links which help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you.Brew with the Coaches - CLICK HEREHardmoors - https://www.hardmoors110.org.uk/Trail Outlaws - https://www.trailoutlaws.com/13 Valleys Ultra - https://www.13valleysultra.com/Beyond Trails - https://www.beyondtrails.co.uk/Hellfire Events - https://www.hellfireevents.com/Dales Runner - https://dalesrunner.co.uk/Hannah Walsh - https://www.hannahwalsh.co.uk/Punk Panther - https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Pen Llyn Ultra - https://penllyn.niftyentries.com/Raw Adventures - https://www.raw-adventures.co.uk/XNRG - https://www.xnrg.co.uk/
