Send us a text#351 - When I started running, it was not easy trying to find information on running. I relied on Runner's World Magazine. That was in the 1980s. RW was a top-notch magazine back then. I loved it so much! I would read through each issue at least three times. I saved them up too and eventually would cut out articles I especially loved and saved them long after the whole issue was gone. I found other running magazines I loved. Progress, technology chances many things and it's changed the printed word. Most magazines are gone, including most running magazines. Today I focus on what happened to them, including the eventual demise of Runner's World, which, in my opinion, suffered greatly by not sticking to running, instead, following a different path. Let's go back in time and take a look at some of the great running magazines and what made them so great. Tobi Fritz läuft. Viel.
“We know why they did it, but we don't know how they did it. Because once we saw what we saw—and we're like tested ultramarathon athletes—we just kept shaking our heads, like, how did they ever make it? Just sheer desire and will.” Bob Crowley, Hal Hall and Tim Twietmeyer are discovering American West tales and trails. Join them as they chat with Luis about their upcoming trip called Survivors & Heroes Expedition which is a 120-mile horseback journey reprising the heroic 1844 Sierra Mountain crossing of the Horseback Party of Six highlighting the untold story of the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party. In this episode they discuss the logistics of the trip, dealing with the elements, how they research the route, the gear used, horses, the Donner party, who is going on this trip, why they are doing this trip, and how hard it was for the original travelers to traverse this route. Amy is a world-renowned author who in 2022 toed the line of the iconic Marathon des Sables. The race planted seeds for a story, one of ultra-running and mystery. In June 2025, 'RUNNER 13' was released. Amy joins the podcast to discuss the book and her MDS story. Runner 13 is a thriller that drops readers straight into a deadly stage race across the Sahara, echoing the notorious Marathon des Sables in Morocco. McCulloch's own experience running that event shapes every detail - the brutal desert landscape, the psychological toll, and the obsession with endurance that defines the sport. The story follows Adrienne, a once-great ultrarunner forced back into competition, and Stella, daughter of the race's manipulative director, Boones. His events, modelled on real-world extreme events, they aren't designed to be won, but to break runners. Central to the mystery is Runner 13, a symbol of both glory and doom. Told in sharp, cliff-hanging chapters that jump between present and past, the novel feels like Agatha Christie transplanted to the Sahara: a brutal race where survival, not victory, is the prize, and where Morocco's desert becomes both the setting and the trap.
Send us a text#348 - What you eat is one of the most important aspects in your running. "Garbage In, Garbage Out" is a popular phrase and with good reason because it's true. If you eat less than quality type food, your running will suffer. This week, I take a couple past episodes on running nutrition, combine them and make it focused to further help your runs. Eating right for your runs and races is one of the hardest parts of running to get right. It's mostly trial and error, but there are few things to follow. I hope I can help out. Perhaps the most powerful question you can ask yourself is - what do I need? There is no-one better equipped to help us answer that question than Kemi Nekvapil.Kemi is, quite simply, a force of nature.A pioneer in the raw food movement in Australia, Kemi is now an accredited executive and personal coach. She's committed to helping women like you and I change how we feel about ourselves and how we express ourselves, so we can set boundaries and pursue what we want from life, without guilt or apology. She's also a powerful speaker as those who attended Sparta Chicks Unleashed 2018 will attest.Plus she's a trail and ultra marathon runner. Kemi has completed 11 x marathon distances races, plus a 100km race, the Surf Coast Century, in 2016. So she ‘gets' us!Kemi was my ‘secret weapon' during 2018. She was my coach for 6 months throughout the year and I can hand-on-heart say Sparta Chicks Unleashed would not have happened if not for her support. In this conversation we discuss:- what an underwear shopping trip at 13 with her fifth set of foster parents taught her a powerful lesson about choice,- how she was able to reach a point of having ‘presence' and unshakeable confidence,- the powerful realisation that led her into executive and personal coaching,- how she discovered running and what trail running gives her,- whether our difficulties with asking for help is the reason so many women (myself included) arrive in our 30s and 40s and realise we've lost a bit of ourselves and we don't know who we are or what we like anymore,- how setting boundaries and asking for what you need in a clean and clear way empowers other people to do the same,- what Kemi would like you to do in 2019 in order to thrive (and also why you're also allowed to pivot once you've decided).
