In 1986, Nintendo released a Mario sequel so difficult that it never left Japan. In this episode, David and Rob trace the full story of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels from the arcade experiments that seeded its brutal design, to the twenty-five year old developer who inherited the franchise and decided mastery was the only acceptable starting point, to the decision made in a Seattle office that kept it from Western players for seven years. Along the way, they explore the strange chain of events that gave America a completely different Super Mario Bros. 2, the Fuji Television promotional game that became one of the best-selling NES titles of all time, and what finally happened when the real sequel crossed the Pacific at last. Join David and Rob as they dig into the sequel Japan kept and the swap America never knew about, on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

GIMME THAT STARFOX MOVIE! - Super Mario Galaxy Full Movie Watch Along: / thereelrejects The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Animated Movie Reaction & Breakdown with Greg Alba, Andrew Gordon, Jon Maturan, and John Humphrey! With the absolute massive box office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie setting up a fast-paced multiverse, Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination Studios Paris have returned to the cosmos for the biggest event of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Support The Channel By Getting Some REEL REJECTS Apparel! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ In this full Super Mario Galaxy movie reaction, the Reel Rejects crew dives deep into the incredible, fast-paced world building and jaw-dropping computer graphics of Illumination's latest video game adaptation masterpiece. We break down the massive ensemble cast, including Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Lego Movie) returning as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) as Princess Peach, and Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Pacific Rim) reprising his role as Luigi. We also check out the massive new cast additions, including Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Room) as outer-space princess Rosalina, Donald Glover (Atlanta, Solo: A Star Wars Story) bringing the iconic Yoshi to life, and Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer, Uncut Gems) as the unhinged, approval-seeking Bowser Jr. Our hosts break down all the chaotic, sensory-overload action sequences, the mind-blowing transitions from 2D tribute animation back into full 3D models, and the amazing orchestral score by composer Brian Tyler. From the introduction of the Boomsday weapon and Bowser Jr.'s paintbrush mechanics to the unforgettable Star Fox crossover sequence featuring Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You) as Fox McCloud flying the Arwing, this movie gave our hosts plenty to unpack. We also discuss the unexpected father-son dynamics between Jack Black's (School of Rock, Kung Fu Panda) King Bowser and Bowser Jr., the pixel pinñata party, the Honeyhive Galaxy run featuring Issa Rae (Barbie) as the Honey Queen, Luis Guzmán (Wednesday) as Wart at the GameCube roulette casino table, and that incredible Terminator 2 homage ending with Lava Bowser becoming the Skull King. As we dissect the mixed critic reviews versus the massive audience score, we're asking: is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie better than the first film? Does the bare minimum of storytelling work when a movie completely understands its experiential assignment? And are we officially getting a full-blown Super Smash Bros. cinematic universe? Let's talk in the comments! Send us Fan MailOkay, here's the 4-1-1: Take a minor character from the legendary “Donkey Kong” series and make a big deal out of him. Sure, he was the hero. But all he did was jump and climb. I could do that. Even if I was 300 pounds I could probably… I don't know, do one or the other maybe. Sorry Pauline, you gonna die.Kids, this is the story of how this Mushroom Kingdom show came to syndication. Where did this show come from? Was it supposed to be bigger? Just what was Club Mario? Well excuuuuussssee me! Welcome to pcmc! Your one-stop shop for non-toxic fandom! On today's all-new episode, host Mike Bongiorno is joined by fellow adventurer of Hyrule, Bill Gagliardi. The guys came together to discuss the 1989 Legend of Zelda animated series. This 13-episode series aired as a segment on the cult favorite TV show The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Produced by DIC Entertainment, the cartoon was a weird combo of uneven animation, great music, bad writing, odd character choices, and blatant misogyny. Bill is a huge fan of the Zelda games and Mike is too dumb to have beaten even a single entry, but together they discuss the impact of this show on the franchise at large. Continuing our lookback at the Mario adaptations, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 1986 Japanese original video animated film Super Mario Bros. The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! Mario and Luigi are tasked of rescuing Princess Peach from King Koopa after he kidnaps her wishing to marry her. Mario and Luigi must gather three objects to free the Toads from their imprisonment and use it to save Princess Peach before the full moon appears. The film was only released in Japan and released on VHS and Betamax. It wasn't until 2016 when a YouTuber named Carnivol acquired an 16mm reel of the film. Years later, both Carnivol, Femboy Films, and Kineko Video worked on a 4K restoration with English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian subtitles for more people to view it. What were Arun and Patricia's thoughts of this obscure Mario OVA?
A new rumor suggests a Metroid movie could be in development, with multiple studios reportedly competing for the rights. Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo may be expanding its film plans, but Metroid would bring a much darker, sci-fi tone. In today's Nintendo News Daily, we break down what this could mean, the risks, and whether Metroid can actually work as a movie. This week we're going to put ourselves in the shoes of Shuntaro Furukawa and Shigeru Miyamoto and decided what the next big Nintendo movie should be. It's interesting because after Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, the next big Nintendo franchise to adapt for a movie is harder to choose. What should it be? Luigi's Mansion? Star Fox? Pikmin? Fire Emblem? There are a lot of options. Also in this episode, we react to some NEW news about The Legend of Zelda movie, Elden Ring pricing and 007 First Light getting delayed on Switch 2. There was something truly mystical about the NES era. Video games were resurgent, rapidly increasing their mindshare with the assistance of an excited public. In short, people were so eager to play along (pardon the pun), that when The Wizard came along -- a film ostensibly designed to help sell Super Mario Bros. 3 in western markets -- no one really cared that it was a glorified advertisement. Chock-full of endless nostalgia and a barrage of late '80s staples like Double Dragon, Zelda 2, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man 2, and Mario 2, The Wizard is frankly a must-watch. And we're very pleased to cover it here on KnockBack, as we reflect on the life and times of Fred Savage, the epic nothingness of the Power Glove, Real Life's seminal new wave classic Send Me An Angel, and absentee parenting so staggering that "it's 10 O'Clock, do you know where your children are?" seems quaint by comparison. Without further delay, let's head back to the Nintendo glory years, shall we? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
