Born to a single, loving, hippie mother and possessing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers, Brandi Merolla didn't recognize the brightly lit storefront at 4th & Broadway. She was on her way home in the fall of 1983 when she came upon this neon temple. As she walked up to open the door, she saw a sign that said “HELP WANTED”. Brandi asked for an application and when the clerk at the Info Desk saw her resume and her art background she told Brandi “Why don't you apply for the Art Department?” Brandi had no idea that this new, huge record store employed artists and soon her life would change in a way she couldn't imagine. On this week's episode, Brandi Merolla takes us through her time at Tower during the infancy of Store 125 in The Village and all the opportunities and events she was a part of during this fascinating time in Tower's history. Brandi created backdrop displays for the in stores of Iggy Pop, Fela, Kate Bush, The Cure, Souxsie & the Banshees, Lou Reed, Paul Young, Violent Femmes, Timbuk 3, Samantha Fox, and Max Roach.4th & Broadway's front window was prime NYC real estate and Brandi tells us about a time she got a thumbs up from an artist whose work she recreated in the window and then later collaborating with The Beastie Boys for their window display before their debut “Licensed To Ill” came out. Hint: They didn't get everything they wanted. Hers is a story of opportunity, loss and ultimately redemption. When Brandi left Tower, it wasn't on her terms. But despondent over losing this $4.25 an hour job she would have gladly continued to work, someone whispered in her ear that this was the best thing that could have ever happened to her. Soon Brandi was taking all of the skills she learned at Tower and making foam core displays for 90% of the record labels based in NYC. She also parlayed this into a position with FAO Schwartz and a 20 year affiliation with The Howard Stern show where she has probably been exposed to more foam core displays of Gary Dellabate's teeth than anyone in the tri-state area. Join us for this fascinating story on “2500 DelMonte Street: The Oral History of Tower Records”. Also, we open this week's episode with a tribute to Patti Drosins, wife of Russ Solomon who passed away at the end of November 2022.

This is the last episode of “Season 1” of Murder All Media. The end of an era, the “Schlocky” era to be more specific. Zach “Schlocky” Mills decided to leave the show shortly before recording the Euphoria episode. We have the last installment of his famous Radio Theatre that will hopefully shed some light on what went down…or what the future holds. Oh…and we talked about Euphoria with two close friends of Travis and huge fans of the show (Molly Cohen and Aaron Pagniano). As well as an interview with Rikki Longanecker who was the Art Dept. Coordinator on the special episode that aired back in January. And Dan J Winn…is Dan J Winn. Enjoy!
Melati Suryodarmo, (b. 1969, Solo, Indonesia) graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunscheweig, Germany under the tutelage of Marina Abramović and Anzu Furukawa with a Meisterschüler qualification in Performance Art. Her practice is informed by Butoh, dance and history, among others. Her work is the result of ongoing research in the movements of the body and its relationship to the self and the world. These are enshrined in photography, translated into choreographed dances, enacted in video or executed in live performances. Suryodarmo is interested in the psychological and physical agitations that may be from the self or the world but somehow result in lasting change the individual. This belief in change or growth through bodily action belies her early induction in meditation, which she continues to practice. The body is the home for memories and the self, rather than the individual itself, and the body's system. The way the body translates internal and external ideas enriches the attitude and thoughts of the self. Meeting Furukawa, an accomplished Butoh practitioner, had opened her eyes on the expressive qualities of the body, a form of communication that transcends verbal language. This experience has motivated her lifelong studies into Butoh and other artistic forms concerned with the human body. As a trained performance artist, presence is integral to the accomplishment of Suryodarmo's work in all mediums. The senses picks up non-verbal inputs and receive them as communication of intent, emotion, energy or identity. These non-verbal inputs open the door to sensitive and individual perception and the creation of presence. However, everyone processes these inputs differently and interpret them differently based on their unique consciousness. By compiling, extracting, conceptualising and translating some of these factors of presence that she recognises into her work, she intends to tease open the fluid border between the body and its environment. These movements are understood through the metaphor of poets, who similarly assembles words and spaces to create their poetry. Suryodarmo draws inspiration from her real experiences in the world. The path of history informs her perception of the everyday and the now. Her works often reflect the process that lead to current events, be it political, global or highly personal. In her abstracted gestures and poetical acts, the presence of each work is brought to a concentrated level of intensity. In abstracting these acts from their common context, they are made to correspond with new associations and sometimes identify radically with different meanings. The works' abstract narrative throws the spotlight on the audience's bodily response. This often results in a level of factual absurdity in the work, which is acknowledged and welcome. Suryodarmo has presented her work in various international festivals and exhibitions, including Reanacting History: Collective Actions and Everyday Gestures (2017), National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Gwacheon, South Korea; SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now (2017), National Art Centre Tokyo & Mori Art Museum, travelled to Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan; AFTERWORK (2016), Para Site, Hong Kong, travelled to (2017) Ilham Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; East Asia Feminism: FANTasia (2015), Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea; 8th Asia Pacific Triennale (2015), Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland, Australia; 5th Guangzhou Triennale (2015), Guangzhou, China; The Roving Eye: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia (2014), Arter, Istanbul, Turkey; Medium at Large (2014), Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; Luminato Festival (2012), Toronto, Canada; Beyond the Self: Contemporary Portraiture from Asia (2011), National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, Australia; Marina Abramović Presents… (2009), Manchester International Festival, Manchester, U.K.; Incheon Women Artists' Biennale (2009), Incheon, South Korea; Manifesta 7 (2008), Bolzano, Italy; Wind from the East: Perspectives on Asian Contemporary Art (2007), Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland. Since 2007, Suryodarmo has been organizing an annual Performance Art Laboratory and Undisclosed Territory, a performance art festival, in Solo, Indonesia. In 2012, she founded “Studio Plesungan”, an art space for performance artists to use as a laboratory. In 2017, she served as Artistic Director for Jiwa, the 17th Jakarta Biennale. She currently lives and works between Gross Gleidingen, Germany and Solo, Indonesia.Artist StatementThe world that inspires me to move my thoughts is the world inside me. The body becomeslike a home which functions as container of memories, living organism. The systeminside the psychological body that changes all the time has enriched my idea to developnew structures of attitude and thoughts. I try to perceive my surroundings as the fact ofthe real presence of now, but considering the path of its history. I try to understand thelanguage that are not spoken, and opens the door of perceptions. I respect the freedom inour minds to perceive things coming through our individual sensory register system.Crossing the boundaries of cultural and political encounters has been a challenge thatstimulates me discovering new identification. An effort to find identity is yet a dangerousact of losing the ground of origin. For me, the process of making artwork is a life long researchthat never stops me to put myself inside the metamorphic constellation. I intend totouch the fluid border between the body and its environment through my art works. I aimto create a concentrated level of intensity without the use of narrative structures. Talkingabout politics, society or psychology makes no sense to me if the nerves are not able todigest the information. I love it when a performance reaches a level of factual absurdity.Melati Suryodarmo's performances have been dealing with the relationship between ahuman body, a culture in which it belongs to and a constellation where it lives. Through thepresence, she compiles, extracts, conceptualized and translates some phenomenon orsubjects into movement, actions, and gestures that are specified to her performance. MelatiSuryodarmo´s performances concern with cultural, social and political aspects, inwhich she articulates through her psychological and physical body. Her performances featureelements of physical presence and visual art to talk about identity, energy, politics andrelationships between the body and its environments.Melati Suryodarmo studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig, Germanyunder Marina Abramovic.Suryodarmo has presented her works in various internationalfestivals and exhibitions since 1996, including the 50th Venice Biennale 2003, Marking theterritory, IMMA Dublin. e.t.c. This is a Arthur & Merlin: Knights of Camelot podcast Special Making Of with cast and crew from the film with actors including Richard Brake (Merlin) & Richard Short (King Arthur) and his Knights, crew members from Art Dept, Make Up, Costume, 1st AD, Production Manager, Editor and Post Supervisor. We go deep into making a single film on this weeks bumper edition as some of the main cast and crew from the recently released Arthur & Merlin : Knights of Camelot come and chat about how they made the film with it’s director Giles Alderson, Producer Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar and cinematographer Andrew Rodger hosting the marathon. First up the team talk about how the film came about and how Lucinda as producer finds the scriptwriters and approaches a historical action film like A&M and how she asked Giles to come on board. They go into detail about the beginnings of the project and how Giles pitched for the directing job before bringing their first guest Richard Brake (Game of Thrones, Batman Begins) on to chat about playing Merlin. Giles, Lucinda and Andrew then chat to 1st AD Stu Laurie and Production Manager (and 2nd AD) Jess Gardner about their roles on the film, how to prepare a film like this, Do’s and Don’ts, how to steady the shop and how to make a film set run smoothly. After discussing casting and how it can shape a film the team bring on King Arthur himself and his trusty (or not) partner Lancelot in the shape of actors Richard Short (Mary Kills People) and Tim Fellingham (Vikings) to talk about playing lead roles, what to expect on an indie film, working with directors and crew and how important it is to be fit, have stamina, great focus, support and work ethic as an actor on a film. Then the team bring on the noise! The wonderful cacophony of the Knights as the actors who play them talk about their experiences on set. The Knights are Kris Johnson, Ronan Summers, James G Nunn, Ian Sharp, Daniel Schutzmann, Aaron May and Stephen Uppal. Then to end Part One of this special episode we bring on the wonderful Make Up and hair designer Brodie Mayhew and the fabulous costume designer Robyn Manton who talk about the importance of prep, continuity, blood effects, the colour palate and working with the director and team to make sure everyone is on the same page. Join us for Part 2 on Friday as we have: Actors Joel Phillimore, Stella Stocker and Jen Matter as well as Art Director Jamie Foote, editor Ollie Parker and Producer and post Supervisor Jeet Thakrar. Anne Walsh (Dept. of Art Practice, UC Berkeley) engaged in an ongoing artistic response to surrealist painter Leonora Carrington’s 1974 feminist novella, The Hearing Trumpet, and spent time with Carrington before her death at age 94. In Hello Leonora, Soy Anne Walsh (No Place Press, 2019), Walsh casts herself as an “apprentice crone” who stalks old people and takes selfies with them, becomes a mother, passes through menopause, and attends “elder theater” classes. Walsh is joined by Julia Bryan-Wilson (History of Art Dept.), whose work is included in the book.

Legendary pinball artist / Art Director Greg Freres and Production Art Manager Steven Martin take us behind the scenes of the heavy hitting art department at Stern Pinball.
If you have been listening to Convo By Design for a while, you have heard amazing stories about set decorators from your favorite TV shows and movies. I thought there should be a special place, just for those who create TV and movie magic. So, I have launched a new podcast called The Art Dept. featuring stories about design and creativity from behind the camera. You are still going to hear from them here on Convo By Design, but in addition to the set decorators, The Art Dept. is going to introduce you to production designers, fabricators, wardrobe, make-up and all of the other amazing creatives that you simply would never hear about. This is an episode of The Art Dept, dedicated to the art behind movie and TV magic. This is an exploration and a showcase of the creatives that never write a line, say a single word nor appear on screen yet their work creates the scene, the feel and the backstory for the characters you love and love to hate. This episode features an interview with set decorator, Beth Wooke. Beth’s body of work is vast with some amazing shows, not the least of which is the TV smash hit, This Is Us. Beth defined the characters for us, showed us how the live, where and how they spend their time. We learn by how these characters live how they are like and unlike us. And these are people we have grown to care for, deeply. Beth defined these people in the first season and that really seems to be Beth’s super-power. I wanted to know more about how Beth does this, where she gets her inspiration from and they answer may or may not surprise you. What you will hear, is how this creative uses her personal experiences to shape the environment of the characters and makes them come to life in between the lines. Before we get to Beth, I want you to hear from another set decorator, Don Diers. Don has a truly diverse body of work. He has decorated sets for The Muppets, Jane the Virgin, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. Don is also a cross-over in the art department with work as a production designer, art director, set dresser and prop master. Thank you for listening to this episode of The Art Dept. Every episode will feature the Hollywood elite, the A-Listers who make TV and movie magic every day. Please follow us @ConvoByDesign on twitter and @ConvoXDesign on Instagram, you can also track the show using #TheArtDepartmentPodcast (all spelled out). iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/convo-by-design/id937267494?mt=2 TuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Arts--Culture/Convo-By-Design-p724759/ Player.FM https://player.fm/en/podcasts/convo-by-design #Design #Architecture #ConvoByDesign #InteriorDesign #Hollywood #Art #LuxuryDesign #HomeDecor #SnyderDiamond #SubZeroWolf #VONDOM

Performance artist, art critic and newly minted UNLV art department chair Marcus Civin talks about: Why he decided to take the job, moving from a satisfying academic career in Baltimore at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA); how his involvement in the Providence, R.I.-based art collective New Urban Arts launched his career trajectory as an undergrad, providing connections and mindset; the harsh realities of being an adjunct teacher (whom he hires as dept. chair), and how as a prospective adjunct you need to know what you’re in for, and it’s not for everyone; the harsh realities against becoming a salaried faculty member, he (slim) odds for adjuncts getting those slots, and his own theories about the pros and cons of certain types of faculty candidates he’s considering hiring; his performance art, including his ideal venue and his ideal size audience and the roots of his work in the court jester and the absurd; how the students he’s encountering at UNLV are warriors leading a revolution, and are ready for change, and compared being in college in 2018 to being in college in 1968 in terms of the potency of the moment; and his misstep in sharing a seminal Chris Burden performance with a performance class at MICA, and what a wake-up call it was for him.
This week's guest is Ellie Kushner, who works as an Art Department Coordinator for film and television, while also co-owning event design company Damn Good Shindig!
