EP29: The Importance of Self-Care & Systems

The Part-Time CEO

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2019 37:46

“You need to decide - I'm worth a 20-hour work week, I'm worth making money, it's allowed to be easy, it's allowed to be seamless, and I'm allowed to have it all.” Janelle Lara (7:54-8:09)  The value of balance, self-care, and systems in your life is not just for mothers. It's for any business owner who wants to enjoy a lifestyle business. Balance, self-care, and systems are so crucial, not just in terms of being a part-time CEO working twenty hours a week, but also in terms of the quality and level of work that we are able to bring to our clients and to our audience.I'm going to explain, step-by-step, how I am a part-time CEO and manage a six-figure company and all of the activities that entails, from managing a small team, managing clients, fulfilling for clients, marketing, managing the finances, while also managing a household and a family. “You need to figure out what works best for how YOU work best.”   - Janelle Lara (10:33-10:38)5 Steps to Reducing Your Work Week Hours There are five very actionable steps you can take to reduce your work week if you want to be a Part-Time CEO or if you want to reduce your hours from what you are currently working. The purpose of all five of these steps is to increase your ability to serve at your highest capacity because that is where you are going to make the greatest impact as well as have the most enjoyment in your business. “What does self-care mean for you? You need to decide that you're worth it, design it, block it, and then commit.”   - Janelle Lara (32:32-32:38) Step #1: Decide The first step you need to take to maximize your ability to be a part-time CEO is to decide to do it. You may need to work on whatever mindset issue you have between yourself and your ideal workweek, whether that be that you're not worth taking the time, or that you have to work hard to make money, or that your sense of self-worth is connected to how busy you are. Step #2: Design You need to design your work week around your decision to limit the amount of time you are going to spend working. I decided that twenty hours a week was my limit, so I designed my work week around those twenty hours. The question you have to ask yourself is, “How do I work best?” I don't do my best work when I'm constantly being interrupted. I need a full day of being a CEO and then I need a full day of being a stay-at-home mom. I realized I need to work in blocks of full days. Some of you can't do full eight-hour work days and need to work in chunks of fewer hours. So, you might design your work week to be four hours a day for five days a week, for example. Step # 3: Block Instead of reinventing the wheel every week, schedule blocks of time for those things you need to do every single week. Have a system that tells you what you should be doing and when you should be doing it. My Google Calendar is the system I utilize to keep me on track. Every time I think of a to-do list item, I block out fifteen minutes to get it done on my Google Calendar.  When I find myself lost on Facebook or on my phone, I go straight to my Google Calendar to determine exactly what I'm supposed to be doing at that time and get back on track. Step # 4: Commit This is the hardest step for most people because things come up, like a client who wants to hop on the phone on a day you're not scheduled to work. In such cases, do what feels intuitively good at that moment. Ask yourself, “Do I feel like I'm bending over backwards for this person, or do I feel excited about getting on a call with them?” If it doesn't feel good, don't do it. This isn't about being selfish, it's about you showing up as your best self and at your highest capacity! Step #5: Delegate Take a blank sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. Write “Optimized” on the left side and “Not Optimized” on the right. Ask yourself, “What is optimized in my business? What do I absolutely love to do in my business?” Write your answers in the “Optimized” column. Then ask, “What is not optimized? What do I hate doing in my business?” Write these answers in the “Not Optimized” column. Look at the “Not Optimized” column and remove anything that isn't necessary to run your business. Then delegate the rest. Do not do them yourself! “Every single entrepreneur needs space to create. You cannot have that if you are constantly working, if you're not respecting how you work, and if you're not respecting the fact that you need time and rest and self-care.” -Janelle Lara (20:32-20:57)If you are not getting the self-care that you need, then you need to start the five steps all over again. Decide today to give yourself the gift of time and space to be creative, because that is when you will do your best work. Body Wisdom With Dr. Michele

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 5, 2017 46:53

Join Dr. Michele on the Body Wisdom Podcast as she interviews guest Perry Marshall, discussing epigenetics and Evolution 2.0. Perry Marshall is an exciting guest bringing a fresh perspective to the 150-year old evolution debate and illuminating the science behind evolutionary processes. With a decade of research and some personal discovery squeezed in there too, Perry harnesses an engineer’s outsider’s perspective to reveal a century of unrecognized research and discoveries. An author, speaker and world-renowned business consultant with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Perry dives deep into the workings of our human bodies, the nature of evolution, and how we can harness nature’s wisdom to optimize our own health and performance. He even compares human evolution to a swiss army knife, and DNA to computer code, as well as touching on subjects like how viruses mutate within hours! While your doctor will say you have to take the full course of antibiotics, Perry illuminates why it is so important. Show Notes: 1. Epigenetics: How did Perry get started down the evolution rabbit hole? It all started with an argument with his brother. As pastor's kids, they were both passionate about their stance. Perry was a scientist and an engineer, while his brother was a believer in Darwinism. Ten years later, the book Evolution 2.0 was born. If you use medicine, you need to figure out how we got here in the first place. There are many things that we haven't been told yet. Evolution 2.0 is a different way of looking at health. The concept of epigenetics is a hard concept for some people to grasp. The poplular concept of genes is wrong. It was thought that genes are everything, that you inherit your genetics and that there is nothing you can do to change your genes. This is wrong. There is a two-way biofeedback system between you and your genes. Everything you do, from what you eat to how you exercise, can change your genes. This is called epigenetics. For example, a study by a pediatric toxicologist at UCLA found that the epigenetic effects of secondhand smoke on children  were most noted from the child's grandparent who smoked. So the number one effect of secondhand smoke is inherited from grandparents who smoke. Epigenetics is like temporarily silencing genes and then turning them on when you need them. You are actively participating in your own epigenetics every day of your own life. The same thing happens with the food we eat. It is affecting future generations. This does not happen by accident. Our bodies constantly adjust to everything that is going on around us. Our choices affect us, our children, our future generations, and everyone around us. We have more power than was originally thought. There is a Darwinian narrative that is inherently disempowering. We are not random accidents. We do not only do what our genes program us to do. We have free will. 2. Symbiogenesis: Symbiogenesis is cooperation. 90% of the cells in your body are symbiotic bacteria that live on our skin and in our bodies. These kinds of symbiotic relationships in nature show that mother nature is more cooperative in nature than competitive. For example, let's look at mitochondria (the parts of the cells that turn oxygen into energy). Our cells have mitochondria in them, so our cells are cooperative with mitochondria. Another example: Termites can digest wood becasue they have bacteria in their stomach that can digest wood. Our bodies are better than any machine that could ever be invented. Evolution is a cooperative process. It's not this survival of the fittest competition that we've been taught. 3. Biologists vs. Physiologists: Dennis Noble, who figured out the cardiac rhythm and made pace makers possible, is a physiologist and the former president of the Physiologists Association. He states that the way that they taught evolution to us was wrong. He found that there was a complex regulatory network with genes where, when the body is under stress, the body will do different things. He figured out the stress response. He organized a conference at Oxford called New Trends in Evolution Conference last year. Approximately 2/3 of what we were taught about evolution was wrong. Even some of the things we were taught in medical school were wrong, such as certain disorders and diseases. We need critical thinkers now more than ever. Evolution 2.0 is the story of a renegade, but it is getting more and more endorsements from biologists and higher level teaching institutions day by day. Does this make sense to me? It's important that we are all wide awake. 4. Artificial Intelligence: AI is trying to do what living things do already very efficiently. They're paying software engineers to create bots like Siri, Alexa, and self-driving cars, which are weak imitations of humans. Perry has created the $5 Million Technology Prize to see if someone could figure out where life gets its spark. If we could figure this out, we could make a huge technological leap forward, and we could understand our bodies better, we could understand our cells better, and we could understand biology better. It's called the Evolution 2.0 Prize. You win if you find out how did we get from chemicals to code. Your body is an information processing system, not just a bunch of chemicals. This is the problem with traditional western medicine. The robots aren't going to be doing the creative things that humans are created to do. The bots are going to be doing the boring jobs. Acutally, this could make youir job a lot more productive and effective. You need to be forward thinking, not worrying. How do I make the AI my slave? Don't worry about how AI will make you its slave. 5. Evolution 2.0: Breaking the Deadlock Between Darwin and Design You can get 3 free chapters of the book at cosmicfingerprints.com You can also find in here on amazon. Our bodies are wise. Barbara McClintock talks about cells being wise in her Nobel Prize-winning paper. She studied what cells do when they're faced with new situations. When writer, speaker and host of The Defining Audacity Radio Show, Drew Myers, walked away from his last “real” job, he realised that he had the embarrassing distinction of having had 11 jobs since graduating from college...11 years before. At first, he looked at this “accomplishment” as a monumental failure. He felt like a bona fide loser and started asking self-defeating questions. The main one: “What the hell is wrong with you?!?!?!?” Then, the smoke cleared and with his confidence starting to return, he kept his heart open for his next opportunity and/or adventure. Well, it found him. Today, Drew uses Life or Bucket Lists to inspire people to keep their goals, dreams and aspirations in the spotlight so they live a bold, adventurous and intentional life. His aim is for the people running in the quicksand of life to stop saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow”, and to take action today. His foundations for living on purpose are: • Contentment – being comfortable in your own skin • Gratitude – being thankful for where you are in life • Motives – examining why you do what you do • Relational Joy – identifying the importance of investing in other Be inspired by Drew as he and ‘Tina chat about what it means to live a purposeful life. I want you to take back some of the control in your business. There’s been a real buzz word around business – which is outsourcing. I’m not suggesting that you do absolutely everything in your business, there are times when you need to outsource, but there are elements of our business that we’re handing over too readily and we need to start taking back some things into the fold. Websites: Have enough knowledge and understanding to be able to update your website yourself. Once you have that knowledge you can make an informed decision if it’s something you will carry on doing yourself, or if it’s something you can hand over to someone else. Social media: Updates I see done by the professionals don't quite ring true; it feels a little bit phoney. Take your social media back, learn to master it, learn to schedule. Design: You are spending a lot of money on design. In my Salon our prices increase in September and with that I need to send the new prices to my Graphic Designer for the next twelve months. He’ll also give me a template for a flyer that I can use and generate, to be more responsive in my marketing. So get the templates set up, find yourself design software and get the hang of your design so that you can be much more responsive, run promotions more frequently with shorter lead time. I hope that’s been useful to you, if it has don’t forget to subscribe I would hate you to miss out on the content that I’m putting out every week, if you’re already subscribed I will see you again next Monday.
