In this highly educational episode, I sit down with trauma-informed somatic coach Mandy Flanders, and she serves up a huge dose of material to chew on regarding nervous system health. Mandy is an expert in nervous system regulation and co-regulation, with signature focuses on conscious parenting, attachment + parts work, somatic experiencing, the polyvagal theory, and more. She is super passionate about helping people and clients understand their unique patterns of "stuckness," to where they can then begin to unwind these inclinations and heal their bodies and their relationships.Mandy emphasizes the cruciality of the nervous system and its influence on our well-being, and does an amazing job of explaining how the system itself works. She shares about the common misconceptions people often have when it comes to nervous system regulation/dysregulation, so we can better understand our bodies from a biological perspective. She chats with me about how trauma and childhood can play a significant role in how we develop patterns, and also goes into how this heavily influences our close relationships and parenting styles. Due to the body's amazing adaptation strategies, Mandy explains that it can be very difficult to heal from anything with a chronically dysregulated nervous system, and she thankfully comes through with several tips to get us started. She shares her faith in the body's resiliency, and its ability to change and achieve autonomic flexibility given the right tools. She even shares her own experiences as proof, and wants us all to understand the truth: That healing is absolutely possible, and that there is always more to your story, even if you feel like you've tried "everything." With the Kansas City Chiefs heading to the super bowl, then only made sense to discuss the topic of leadership, but leadership through the very specific lens of the one and only Joe Cullen. Coach Cullen is widely known and widely respected NFL Football Coach who currently coaches the defensive line for the Kansas City Chiefs. Marc played four years for Coach Cullen at the University of Richmond and still has a very close relationship with Coach Cullen to this day. And on top of that, Marc has trained one of Kansas City's top defensive linemen and one of the NFL's top defensive linemen as well, Chris Jones. Episode 406 – Moving the Needle Today we have Nate, Eric, Beth, Hunter, and Kathy. Registration for Restore opens December 1. https://www.recoveryelevator.com/restore/ Sponsor: https://www.recoveryelevator.com/cafere/ Highlights from Kris Kris speaks to the many mixed messages we get about addiction. Billions of dollars are spent on alcohol advertising that lures you to believe how fun, cool, and sexy you will be if you drink, as long as you don't become one of “those people.” After Kris's first session with an addiction specialist who shared her recovery journey with Kris, he felt less alone. Kris' counselor gave him hope that there was a better way. He continued counseling, completed treatment, and found the Recovery Elevator podcast. Today he is one of the hosts. One of the best ways to combat the stigma of addiction is to tell your story. Kris recently attended the 6th Annual Recovery Reinvented event founded by Kathryn Burgum, the first lady of North Dakota. Kris had an opportunity to hear Dr. Bruce Perry speak, who co-authored the book, “What Happened to You?” with Oprah Winfrey. Dr. Perry said that while the science, research, and statistics are fascinating, the storytelling inspires others to revisit their beliefs about addiction. There are a few ways to tell your story: you can share in a recovery meeting, on a recovery podcast, give a testimony at your church, or post on Facebook or Instagram. You can also lead by example by passing on the cocktail at Happy Hour or telling your friends, “I don't drink.” Keep sharing your stories, RE – that's how we will combat the stigma of addiction. As a transplant to ND, he was embraced by “North Dakota nice.” He found recovery after multiple DUIs. He empowers students in recovery. He is passionate about being the change for others in his community. [21:45] Eric is a physician and a professor and speaks to active addiction while practicing medicine. He has been in recovery for thirty years, and the services available were very different when he started. There are now programs available for clinicians in recovery that allow them to recover without losing their licensure. Eric now has excellent relationships and is happily married. [27:34] Beth tried several approaches to recovery, and after witnessing a friend overdose, she could stack days. After six months of recovery, she got a job, and having someone believe in her made a huge difference in her life and recovery. [33:15] Hunter has been sober for nine years and works in healthcare. He spent so much time wondering when the other shoe would drop. High functioning kept him in active addiction for awhile because he never missed work. [40:58] Kathy is a mother of five, is a student and works. Her dreams include social work and foster parenting. Today she recovers out loud and advocates for other Native Americans with addiction and is a foster parent. [47:40] Kris shares his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in Recovery Reinvented. Episode 31 - Women, Step Aside (Men, Step Up)Over 170 years have passed since the feminist movement began, and its influence on western culture has been far-reaching. One area in particular that it has affected is the role of men and women within marriage. On that score, the results of the movement have arguably been unfavorable--for both men and women. Disentangling ourselves from those negative, often hidden influences on our relationships can be extremely difficult.Nervously taking the mantle of motivator in this, his most controversial episode to date, Chad tells he and his wife's personal story. Ben comes along for the ride in his van down by the river, as the two unpack the inherent tension in men and women's roles in modern matrimony. Can a woman actually "have it all", meaning a fulfilling career AND the joys of being a mother? What does it mean for a man's leadership in the home if his wife is the breadwinner? What does it mean for a mother to be the heart of the home, and is a woman more "free", or less "free", when staying at home with children?SHOW NOTES:Apropos (definition for Ben) - adjective, meaning "very appropriate to a particular situation"Book Reference: "The Case for Patriarchy" by Timothy J. In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discusses: Timing the puppy training early and with directed purpose and handling the fear periods in dogs. Habituation, spontaneous recovery, sensitization, and learned irrelevance. When to reorient and when to address fears. Understanding your dog’s phobias to learn how to solve the problem. Common fears and phobias seen in police and sport dogs. Key Takeaways: Too many people restrict social and experiential learning in puppies during the critical stages of development out of fear. As a decoy, as a handler, as anyone working with a young dog, you need to be attentive to what you’re doing and always be surveying your environment to avoid unintended consequences. Avoid creating a problem that doesn’t already exist. Take a systematic approach to expose your dog to everything they need to be exposed to. Generally, fear periods are short-lived. Take your dog into more familiar places, more natural spaces, where it’s not going to encounter a lot of things that are going to be super unusual or might provoke a fearful response. "I have a phobia about creating phobias. I don't want to create a phobia in my dog, because the road is going to be super long to try and systematically desensitize to any type of stimuli that's been created as an avoidance response." — Jerry Bradshaw Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com Book Reference: The Decoy Book by William Garrido - amazon.com/Decoy-Book-Collaborations-Some-Industry/dp/B08T6YGWSD Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training by Stephen R. In this episode I dive deep into the societal tolls of being a woman...mainly the pressure of PERIODS. We are conditioned from a very young age to equate our sacred blood as "waste" when in fact it is potent in nutrients and more similar to breast milk than feces. The Law of Harvest Identifying the Seed of Your Harvest Bible Study Verses: Galatians 6:7-8, Psalm 126: 5-6, Genesis 8:22, Genesis 1:11, Isaiah 55:10. “ They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him”. Sowing into God’s kingdom can be very painful, sometimes even bringing hearts of flesh to tears. Pastor/Theologian John Lawerence wrote a book entitled “The 7-Laws of Harvest” which gives the readers an insight into what the laws of harvest are about. One of the laws of of harvest is that much more is reaped than is sown ; often the pain of sowing can lead to great joy upon the realization of the harvest for the kingdom. Pastor Otuno expounds on this and much more on the exciting journey of Fresh Encounter Radio Podcast originally aired on FEB 2, 2019 on WNQM, Nashville Quality Ministries and WWCR World Wide Christian Radio broadcast to all 7-continents on this big beautiful blue marble, earth, floating through space. Ep. 87 Matt Grace: Former Navy Rescue Swimmer and Firefighter on Discipline, PTS, and Beauty From Heaven Matt Grace spent his childhood years growing up in Hawaii. While many would consider this a dream come true, Matt had an experience in the ocean while living there which changed the course of his life forever. In his early years, unrest at home caused Matt to move constantly living in several different places across the United States. All the while he felt a yearning to be back "home" on the islands of Hawaii. He found his way back by joining the Navy. Over a twenty year career with the Navy, Matt spent time working as a Navy Firefighter and eventually worked his way into the elite ranks of the Navy Search and Rescue (SAR) swimmers. Even before his time ended in the Navy, Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) began to have a massive impact on his life. It all culminated in an event that Matt shares for the first time publicly in today's interview. This event was the spark he needed to finally take control of his PTS and begin a journey of personal growth to save his life and the lives of others around him. Now he uses his experiences in the military, his Master Practitioner of NLP training, and his triumph over PTS to help each person he works with "release their hero," through his work with his company H3RO FIT. In today's interview Matt will discuss: The most intense battle he ever faced with PTS, which wasn't on the battlefield, and how began his path to self-healing The one book that changed everything for him The top lessons he learned from working with some of the top military personnel alive, including Navy Seals 3 daily habits that Matt used to pull himself out of hell The realities of training to be a Navy Rescue Swimmer How the Navy Rescue Swimmer motto, "So others may live," continues to fuel Matt today And so much more!
