Check out a new nostalgic animated holiday special Christmas With Grubbs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chCV9cuLpVY It's Christmas AND it's been 40 years since Gremlins came out. Let's see what Nostalgia Critic thinks of this "kinda" Christmas classic. Gremlins is a 1984 American comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus and starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday and Frances Lee McCain, with Howie Mandel providing the voice of Gizmo, the main mogwai character. It draws on legends of folkloric mischievous creatures that cause malfunctions—"gremlins"—in the British Royal Air Force going back to World War II. The story follows young man Billy Peltzer, who receives a strange creature as a pet, which then spawns other creatures that transform into aggressive, imp-like monsters that wreak havoc on Billy's hometown during Christmas Eve. Send us a textBefore the U.S. entered WWII, the British Royal Air Force sent prospective pilots to the U.S. for training because they didn't have the capacity to train the numbers they needed for the fight, and America's women pilots helped train them. New York Times and USA Today Best-Selling author Lorraine Heath explores this fascinating niche of our history in her novel The Girls of Flight City, the December 2024 Aviatrix Book Club discussion book. Lorraine was inspired by a story she read in 1991 about a woman in Terrell, Texas who tended the British Cemetery, and filed the idea away as she pursued an award-winning writing career spanning the past 30 years, publishing over 60 Romance novels and books for young adults, before returning to this story that not only piqued her curiosity, but tugged at her emotional connections to her British mother who lived through WWII in the UK, and her Texan father who graduated from high school in Terrel. Over 2,000 RAF cadets trained at the Terrell Aviation School, just one of seven British Flying Training Schools in the U.S. at the time. Welcome to another exciting episode of Giant Talk. In this episode Roger is joined by Nick Corrigan, a Flight Lieutenant in the British Royal Air Force. Like any military organisation, command and control is necessary, especially in battle. When the stakes are this high, how can the time and space be made for testing new ideas, and challenging the status quo? So how does an organisation like the UK's Royal Air Force learn, adapt and grow when hierarchy and orders are commonplace? Nic joins us to share how time is consciously made for reflection and analysis so that the RAF can always be certain it's improving and evolving its capacity and capabilities. Nic brings with him a critical perspective on this given his unit is responsible for human performance. Enjoy the episode!

At 11:15PM over Mutual's WOR in New York, Duke Ellington was on the air with music from The famous Hurricane Nightclub on 49th street and broadway in New York City. The next day, The British Royal Air Force dropped a record thirty-six hundred tons of bombs in a single raid on Germany, France and Belgium. On Tuesday April 11th, the Soviets took more northern territory in Crimea. German forces immediately began a withdrawal. That same day, the U.S. sunk a Japanese destroyer and a German submarine. One thing was clear as the calendar turned to mid-April, the Allies were piling up victories and the Axis powers knew they needed to do something to stem the turning tide of war. Although we know now that D-Day would happen in June, both sides knew a big invasion was coming. In the meantime, those people in midtown Manhattan could dance and drink the night away. After all, tomorrow is never guaranteed.

Melvin Jenner was already in the Michigan Air National Guard when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After joining the U.S. Army Air Corps and undergoing training for a bomber crew, he was soon flying missions in the European Theater of World War II. The next few years would bring him harrowing bomber missions, a secret flight over Normandy on D-Day, and an unforgettable role in the Berlin Airlift. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Jenner tells us how he ended up flying missions in the A-20 with the British Royal Air Force before he ever flew with an American crew - and about his shock when he discovered those missions with the UK did not count towards his total needed for a ticket home.Jenner also describes his roles as radio man and gunner on the B-17, the most tense missions of the war and what it was like to fly through flak. He also shares what he saw from the sky as he flew over the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944.But Jenner's memorable career did not end with the war. He also shares an emotional recollection of serving in the Berlin Airlift as the U.S. flew in provisions to break the Soviet blockade there. Finally, he tells about his role in helping Chuck Yeager break the sound barrier.

Built in 1927, the German ocean liner SS Cap Arcona was the greatest ship since the RMS Titanic and one of the most celebrated luxury liners in the world. When the Nazis seized control in Germany, she was stripped down for use as a floating barracks and troop transport. Later, during the war, Hitler's minister, Joseph Goebbels, cast her as the "star" in his epic propaganda film about the sinking of the legendary Titanic. Following the film's enormous failure, the German navy used the Cap Arcona to transport German soldiers and civilians across the Baltic, away from the Red Army's advance. In the Third Reich's final days, the ill-fated ship was packed with thousands of concentration camp prisoners. Without adequate water, food, or sanitary facilities, the prisoners suffered as they waited for the end of the war. Just days before Germany surrendered, the Cap Arcona was mistakenly bombed by the British Royal Air Force, and nearly all of the prisoners were killed in the last major tragedy of the Holocaust and one of history's worst maritime disasters. Walk Among Heroes is pleased to welcome Gilbert Clarke. Originally born in Jamaica, Mr. Clarke volunteered to join the British Royal Air Force as a teenager, and was trained to install and maintain radar technology on planes in the RAF fleet. Radar technology was developed during World War 2, as it became necessary to track German rockets approaching London. Mr. Clarke was on the forefront of this technology. Walk Among Heroes had the honor of meeting Mr. Clarke in Normandy in June 2023. Such an inspiring man!

This episode of The Lazy CEO Podcast is about determining when it is time, as a Founder, to bring in an outside CEO to run the company. We have a gentleman named Nick Wilkinson. Nick was a CEO that was brought into a company called Binary Tree that one of our members Steven Pivnik had founded, and he was trying to position for sale and upgrade the talent. Nick was the guy he identified and ended up bringing into the company. Nick's Background Originally from the UK. After graduation from university, Nick spent the first 10 years of his career in the British Royal Air Force. After the Air Force, he joined what was then a pretty small company in the UK called Computer Sciences Corporation, CSC, which Nick subsequently spent the next 20, almost 25 years rising through the ranks of CSC from a consultant all the way through for various account management roles to ending up as a direct report to the CEO in, at that time was like a hundred thousand people company with 16 billion in revenue. With a great career in the UK. he was lucky enough to do some interesting jobs, which brought him to the States. He also lived in Australia for a few years and really assimilated a huge amount of knowledge and expertise on how to run large-scale organizations. Back in the early 2010s he was the CEO of a private equity-backed company backed by Bear Capital which was also in the IT services area. And that company and Steven's company oftentimes coexisted with clients. They didn't do the same thing, but they did, provided complimentary services. Here is more of the conversation between Jim Schleckser, CEO of The CEO Project, and Nick Wilkinson. What was the size of the company, the training company, and the IT space prior to coming to Binary Tree? The private equity company was mid-market. It was of comparable size to Binary Tree. I made a decision when I left the large corporate world that I didn't want to go and do the same thing again, I wanted a change. I wanted to have more direct visibility of what I was doing and how it affected the business. I wanted to be a CEO. And I decided that I wanted to try that in a different financial structure, a different capital structure. And that's what led me into the private equity world. An important component of being able to step in as a CEO for a Founder is rolling your sleeves up and not needing somebody to do everything for you. In the founder-owned company, there aren't a whole host of staffers and people to do things for you. A lot of entrepreneurs get dazzled by the resume. They see your big career and think, this guy's brilliant, but then they bring that individual in, and they can't do the big to small translation. You obviously made the transition successfully, but what would you characterize as the differences? Most people can't make that transition. You did. What were the differences and why were you able to do it where maybe others might not be able to? A big part of it is personality. And I'm trying to answer the question without blowing smoke in my own direction. You've got to be reasonably self-effacing and modest, the servant leadership things. I know what it felt like to be at this level, and then a mid-manager and the senior manager and management. I had walked a mile in other people's shoes, and I was always willing to empathize with them and try and see things from their perspective. I've always been someone who's espoused lifelong learning. In addition, the founder must have a certain willingness to change and to listen, but at the same time a clear sense of what it needed to be successful in his or her company. That chemistry is important. If I was trying to figure out if somebody had the right profile or didn't, what would you recommend as the two or three questions to figure out if they've got the profile with you? If you were faced with a new opportunity with a big customer because a CEO must be capable of going out and meeting with customers, what do you do? How do you approach that? Shortly after I arrived at Binary Tree, we traveled out to the middle of nowhere and gave the pitch. We didn't win the business, but the fact that I was willing to be the one who made the deck, I went to Kinkos to get it photocopied. I helped prepare the guy to give the pitch and everybody thought, if this guy isn't here just to tell us what to do, he's willing to do it himself. So, a question that gets a potential CEO to show that they would do it themselves, that they would be there in the trenches with people as opposed to telling them from back at HQ. That would be a good way to frame something How do you follow the legacy of the Founder and establish credibility? How do you establish a relationship with the team? Moving into a CEO role in a new company, not a company that you've been in for some time, promoted into, you must have a balance between the drive to implement the things that got you the job, with the need to really learn about the business, to respect the fact that your knowledge of it is superficial when you've been outside it. You must learn how it actually performs. Where's the value really created? Who are the heroes? Where are the tensions? Where are the hidden gems? How it really works. So, it's that balance between listening and doing, which is always the case for a CEO, but extremely important in those first 60, or 90 days. If you move too quickly, then the organizational will or the body will reject the organ transplant as one of my advisors once said to me but if you move too slowly, you've missed your opportunity, and your authority diminished. And people wonder, why did we make the change then? So, you must have a plan. And revisit the plan with the founder, hers, or his DNAs in the company, and who better person to give you feedback on whether well, that would work, but I wouldn't try that you need to keep that relationship going. It's really that balance between listening and doing that's essential. How much of your original plans survived? Most things that I expected that we would do, we did. Did we do them in six months? No. One of the things that you must learn in smaller companies is that you must take smaller steps. The organization is not robust enough to do dramatic change. There are capital constraints. You must temper your ambitions with the, with the resources that you can muster. For more about the board, sacred cows, the difference between working with PE firms and Founder owned companies, and other lessons learned, listen to the full episode of The Lazy CEO Podcast. About our Guest - Nick Wilkinson After my initial period of military service in the Royal Air Force, I have enjoyed a successful career across a wide spectrum of the IT software and services industry: a proven CEO in private equity and founder-owned companies and extensive, global multi-functional leadership experience in a publicly traded corporation. I have also established myself in the entertainment industry as an author, screenwriter, and producer. In all my activities, I relish transformational challenges and managing through the lifecycle of devising strategy, establishing a vision and purpose, building, motivating, and sustaining an outstanding team, and executing for results. I cultivate win-win relationships with customers, partners, and colleagues. And, perhaps most importantly, I bring optimism and a healthy sense of humor and perspective to every situation.
Austin: So here's a story from A to Liz-Z. You wanna be more than just a model, you gotta marry. *record scratch* Producer: And we're gonna stop right there… The most controversial part of this episode was SUPPOSED to be the Victoria Beckham pit of cluelessness Austin dug for himself, but this was recorded in February 2022. So when Austin said “what he wants, what he really really wants” was to do a hate episode on the British monarchy when the queen died, he did not intend to predict her actual demise. So please, British Royal Air Force, do not come after us, Cinnamon, Paprika, or Ginger.

The P-51 Mustang changed the course of the air war in Europe, but it almost didn't make it off the assembly line. The story of the Mustang's evolution and the pilots that flew it in combat is the subject of a great new book by David & Margaret White titled “ Wings of War; The World War II Fighter Plane That Saved the Allies and the Believers Who Made It Fly.” The genesis of the book is Margaret's 103 year old father who served as a ground officer with the 20th Fighter Group in England and often regaled her with stories. David was already a published author so the two teamed up to write “Wings of War”. The Mustang was originally developed for use by the British Royal Air Force but did not inspire interest among US Military leaders. The story of the P-51 might have ended there were it not for Tommy Hitchock, a former WWI pilot who fought the bureaucracy as ferociously as the Mustang fought the Germans. His advocacy for the aircraft was critical. Margaret shares that a certain level of bias against using a British manufactured engine in the Mustang was an issue. Outright corruption by Major General Bennett Myers also played a role in holding the Mustang back. Myers was eventually courts martialed. When the nimble P-51 was introduced, it was able to outfly anything the Luftwaffe could put in the air. Most importantly, it had the fuel capacity to escort the bombers all the way to the heart of Germany and back. We also discuss some of the very interesting pilots who flew the Mustang including Don Blakeslee. Blakeslee was such a fan of the Mustang that he told his commander he could have his pilots trained in 24 hours. Many of the pilots learned to fly the P-51 on their way to the target. TAKEAWAY: Pilot Joe Peterburs said “I'm nineteen years old. They gave me a plane with 2,000 horsepower and six 50 caliber machine guns and they said go have fun. I had fun!”
I am delighted to introduce part one of a series of interviews with Angie Power-Disney. Angie is an sra and MK Ultra survivor who almost didn't reach out to me because of our victor series because she didn't feel she could claim victor status yet because she was still healing. I disagree. She is still alive, still fighting, and still passionately in love with Jesus and working to understand and be able to trust God and grow closer to Him. Angie began life in strange hospital circumstances that bring up so many questions that you are already confused with her life right along with her. Her father was in the British Royal Air Force and traveled the world, bringing Angie and her sisters into military underground bases and high elite parties where she and her sisters were ritually abused, experimented on with MK Ultra, sex trafficked, physically abused, emotionally abused, and the list, sadly, goes on and on. Angie has very clear memories in how she arrived at places and then the memories just faded as drugs must have been introduced, leaving her with fragmented memories that frustrate her to this day. She feels that if she could just grasp all that happened, understand them, then maybe she could finally heal and get peace. Her story is riveting and heartbreaking. Her eyes echo her story. Pray for Angie's safety and healing as we go forward as the attacks against her are many with the elite that abused her. Thank you, as always, for listening. These words were spoken August 20th, 1940, by the Prime Minister of England, to pilots of the British Royal Air Force, who had been showing great courage against the German Luftwaffe in an effort to save Great Britain from being bombed into submission. This was the Battle of Britain- these were dark days- and the PM wanted these brave men to know that they carried the undying gratitude of their countrymen for their courage and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds. Despite a number of embarrassing political events over the past number of years, Great Britain still likes to regard itself as a forward-thinking, world-leading country and a force for good. Surveys show that the United Kingdom retains a great deal of positive sentiment around the world. One historian whose work has done a great deal to shatter the myths of empire is Mark Curtis, who joins Alan MacLeod on the Mintcast today. Mark Curtis is a historian and journalist, the co-founder of Declassified UK, an investigative news website dedicated to scrutinizing the powerful. Described by veteran journalist and filmmaker John Pilger as Britain's greatest modern historian, Curtis has published a number of groundbreaking books. Among them are “Web of Deceit: Britain's Real Role in the World,” which exposes the fallacy that Britain is a force for democracy and human rights; “Unpeople: Britain's Secret Human Rights Abuses,” which catalogs the country's imperial crimes up to the present; and “Secret Affairs: Britain's Collusion with Radical Islam,” which explores how the United Kingdom has supported radical and jihadist forces in the Middle East in order to topple secular, independent-minded governments.Today Curtis lays out how Britain is playing a major role in the devastation in Yemen, funnelling weapons to Saudi Arabia, reloading its jets, and generally doing everything short of pulling the trigger itself. Britain is a major arms dealer around the world, and Saudi Arabia is by far its best customer, responsible for 49% of worldwide sales. The U.K. also plays a key role in propping up other Middle Eastern monarchies such as Qatar, which now operates two joint squadrons with the British Royal Air Force, making it an ever closer ally of London. Curtis also strongly condemned the imprisonment of Australian publisher Julian Assange, who continues to be held under lock and key in London. Describing the case as a prime example of “imperial arrogance,” he claimed that Assange's case should concern every member of the British public.MintPress News is a fiercely independent, reader-supported outlet, with no billionaire owners or backers. Peter Docker, father of 2, is on the show today. He's served for 25 years in the British Royal Air Force, he has been a Force Commander during combat flying operations and has seen service across the globe. His career has spanned from professional pilot, to leading an aviation training and standards organization, teaching postgraduates at the UK's Defence College, to flying the British Prime Minister around the world. Peter has also led multibillion-dollar international procurement projects and served as a crisis manager and former international negotiator for the UK Government. He now helps people and organizations accomplish extraordinary things as an international speaker and teacher, having been to 92 countries teaching some of the principles we're going to talk about today. This week's Dad Do or Die (3Ds) from this episode are:Build a network for friends/neighbors who can positively influence your kids. Whether that's extended family, neighbors, Big Brother/Big Sister, All Pro Dads, church, gym, wherever, having a network of other men can be hugely helpful in your kids life. Peter shares about the network of father figures he had growing up after his biological father abandoned him and his brother. Also, how important the network of close friends that he had helped his family when he was serving in the Royal Air Force away on missions during the Gulf War.If you are away from the family for whatever reason, short interactions can be more memorable and impactful than long scheduled nightly calls with the kids. Peter used to only get 15 minutes a week to talk to his family when he was stationed away, luckily we have more than that these days. A simple phone call between meetings or putting the laptop or phone down and giving your child full attention, can boost their confidence and strengthen your relationship. If you are facing a challenge as a parent, think about how you can change the context of the situation. Peter shares a fantastic story about how he approached his son who was adamant about getting a large motorbike, which is high risk with the narrow streets in the UK. He and his wife were opposed but how he changed the context was brilliant. And a spoiler alert - he didn't just say no. We cover a lot of other great stories and ideas we can use to be better men, leaders, and fathers. Let's get to it. Many years ago, during World War 2, the British were faced with a serious dilemma. During that time, the British Royal Air Force lost many planes because of the attack from the germans' anti-aircrafts weapons. Whenever the planes were sent out for missions, they'd always come back with a lot of bullet holes. So to limit the number of planes going down, the British Royal Air Force had to think of a way to protect their planes from the bullets so that they are not badly damaged and they don't lose as many planes during their missions. And one way to do it is by building stronger protective armors on the plane. But here's the problem, they can't build the armor over the whole plane. Why? Because this will slow down the planes and make them an even better target for the enemy. So instead, what the military did was, they got back all the planes that survived, they plotted out all damage on these planes, and based on that, they will armor the part of the planes that get attacked the most. So what can we learn from this? Well, you can't. Because this is a flawed strategy and it doesn't work! Why? Well, check out this episode to find out more! Hello again, everybody! On this episode of Battles & Banter, Avery & Tony pine for an absent Codie but keep the ship level nonetheless by tackling the Battle of Britain, which was fought from July 10th to October 31st, 1940. 80 years ago, the skies over Great Britain were a battleground between the British Royal Air Force and the German Luftwaffe. The battle would mark a significant turning point for the Allied forces as the British held their own against the might of the German war machine. However, the battle also marked the beginning of 'The Blitz', which was the devastating bombing of London & other civilian targets by the Germans. Avery & Tony highlight the layout of the fight, and talk the pros & cons of both the British defense and German attack. They also talk A LOT about planes so hang in there. Enjoy!

In the closing days of World War II, the British Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Force dropped more than 3,900 tons of high explosives and fire bombs on the city of Dresden. It was not, strictly, only a military target and the story of the bombing has captured the imagination of everyone who survived it and those who study the war.One of those people is Sinclair McKay. McKay is a literary critic for the Telegraph and The Spectator in the UK. I left school at 18 and I didnt go to college, I served in the British Air Force for 10 years as a surgical technician, so my working background has always been in the medical profession. After that I went into medical sales for 15 years. I worked my way up to the sales and marketing director-I had a budget for marketing for my company and that budget included managing the website and I had to keep paying for the site to be updated. So I learned how to do this myself instead of paying people to do this. So I started to learn HTML. I was traveling too often and wanted to be home with my son who was 3 at the time. They saw airplanes ... come into reality as weapon systems ... and they became strong advocates. We continue our Great Strategists series with a look at three pioneers of airpower -- Giulio Douhet from the Italian Armed Forces, Billy Mitchell of the U.S., and Hugh Trenchard, the "father" of the British Royal Air Force. In the early 20th century, these three great innovators and thinkers saw the battlefield changing as a result of the introduction of airplanes. Only a decade would pass from the Wright Brothers' first flight to use of aircraft in World War I -- and controlling the skies have been vital to military success ever since. Presenting these pioneers is Dr. Tami Davis Biddle, U.S. Army War College Professor of National Security Affairs, and Dr. Jacqueline E. Whitt, U.S. Army War College Professor of Strategy. Tami Davis Biddle is Professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Army War College. Jacqueline E. Whitt is Professor of Strategy at the U.S. Army War College and the WAR ROOM Podcast Editor. The souls of tortured prisoners roam the halls of the Old Changi Hospital in Singapore, built in 1935 as part of the British Royal Air Force base. Although meant to heal and comfort, the hospital provided only violence and pain. Now, it stands as eternal resting grounds, where restless souls lurk, ready to make others suffer as they have.

WW1 THEN - News From 100 Years Ago Looking back at WW1 100 years ago this week - we are going to follow just ONE of the many amazing stories This week we are following the story of the RED CROSS. The American Red Cross or ARC was Founded by Clara Barton in May of 1881, earning a historic role for serving people in need. When Europe was thrown into conflict in June 1914, the American Red Cross was a small organization still in the process of developing its identity and programs. In large part the American Red Cross we know today was forged by the “War The Changed the World” when the organization suddenly found itself deeply embroiled in the incredible upheaval, growth and expansion that was America’s war effort. The transformation began as we declared war in April of 2017. At that crucial time, and as with so many other things, Red Cross headquarters was reeling under the sudden projected demands on it - so in May of 2017, President Wilson appointed Henry P. Davidson - A successful New York banker to head a “War Council”, which was to direct the Red Cross. YUP - It looks pretty much like a US war effort takeover. So by the end of June - 100 years ago this week - Having just knocked it out of the park with the Liberty Bonds drive - the US government turned its sights on successfully wrapping up $100 Million fund drive from private donations on behalf of the Red Cross. Think about it - that is over $2 billion in 2017 being raised for a private organization with the direct support of the US federal government. Here is what it looked like 100 years ago this week in the pages of the Official Bulletin - the Government War Gazette headed by George Creel - America’s propaganda chief for President Woodrow Wilson. Dateline: June 25th, 1917 Headline: BELIEVE THE $100,000,000 RED CROSS FUND WILL BE RAISED A thousand American cities were striving today to boost the big Red Cross war fund to an even $100,000,000. With returns well over the three-quarters mark this afternoon, the War Council officers were confident that by the close of the day the Red Cross war fund would be In hand.” On the same day... [sound effect] Headline: "WAR IS BUT BEGINNING," LORD NORTHCLIFFE SAYS, IN OUTLINING TASK OF THE RED CROSS The story reads: “Lord Northcliffe, of the British war mission, who has been at the front and has seen at close quarters the actual part that the British Red Cross is playing in the gigantic world struggle, has given out the following statement relative to the work that the American Red Cross has before It : " If, as one of the leaders of the British Red Cross, I have a message of any kind to the American Red Cross, it Is one of congratulation on the devotion and enthusiasm for Red Cross work I find sweeping this vast continent. " He goes on to state: “The Red Cross must take up the burden of seeing us through and alleviating the horrors a ruthless foe has added to the usual sufferings of war. Adding: " One of the most Important of the new developments is the search for the missing and wounded.” The next day the drumbeat continues: [sound effects] Dateline: Tuesday June 26, 1917 Headline: 100,000,000 DOLLAR Red Cross War Fund is Oversubscribed The story reads: The Red Cross to-day issued the following statement: The Red Cross war fund of $100,000,000 has been raised. The even sum was passed some time during the night. Today's returns continued to boost the sum by the millions. Before noon the grand total was $104,000,000, with a prospect that $105,000,000 would be marked up on the big headquarters blackboard before night. One day later on Wednesday… [sound effects] Dateline: Wednesday June 27th, 1917 Headline: MILLIONS STILL BEING ADDED TO THE RED CROSS WAR FUND The Red Cross to-day issued the following statement: How much over $100,000,000 the war fund of the American Red Cross will go is purely a matter of conjecture. Taking into consideration all overlapping of subscriptions that may occur, the fund should be at least fifteen or twenty million dollars over the goal by July 1. The campaign officially terminated on Monday night, but hundreds of cities throughout the country have volunteered to go right on with collecting funds for the Red Cross. And on the same day [sound effects] Dateline: Wednesday June 27th, 1917 Headline: RED CROSS WAR COUNCIL ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR DEALING WITH PROBLEMS OF SANITATION The Red Cross to-day issued the following statement: Broad plans for dealing with the problems of sanitation and public health arising out of war conditions abroad and in the United States were announced to-day by the War Council of the American Red Cross. To provide expert advice for the council in dealing with these problems, the war council also announced the appointment of a medical advisory committee, composed of leading sanitarians and public health authorities of the country. And then on Thursday - the US State Department oversteps its bounds and the Red Cross pushed back - politely. [sound effects] Dateline:Thursday June 28th, 1917 Headline: RED CROSS SEEKS CHANGE IN BASE HOSPITAL RULING On June 20 the American Red Cross’ director general of the department of military relief, forwarded to the directors of all Red Cross base hospitals a copy of a letter received from the State Department - to the effect that - hospital units intended for service abroad should not Include persons of German, Austro-Hungarian, Bulgarian, or Turkish nationality or birth, or American citizens whose fathers were born in Germany, Austro-Hungary, or allied countries.” The Red Cross goes on to explain that this type of policy may work in a country with very few people of foreign birth but in America, an immigrant nation Quote: “such unfair discrimination against some of our most patriotic and respected citizens is inappropriate”. Then on Friday the most interesting and intriguing Red Cross article of all: [sound effect] Dateline: Friday June 29th, 1917 Headline: MILITARY TITLES, RANK, AND UNIFORM WILL BE USED BY RED CROSS AGENTS IN WAR THEATER The Story reads: War Department Will Commission Representatives of the Organization to Facilitate Their Work in Service of Humanity—Appropriate Insignias to Be Provided. What a great topper for a week of stories about the Red Cross! Let me summarize: First The US government creates a War Council - appoints their man - Henry P. Davidson - and effectively puts him in charge of the Red Cross through this war council. Then the US government puts its imprint, endorsement and propaganda machine on a major multi-billion dollar (in today’s terms) fund raising campaign to fund a private humanitarian organization - generally managed by it. The UK government equivalent of our Henry P. Davidson makes a major support speech on the behalf of the Red Cross. The next day the official fund drive is ended but hundreds of local communities and cities just keep right on raising way more money than the original goal. The next day, the Red Cross starts making announcements about what they are going to DO for America and how they plan on doing it. On the same day - they push back on a US State Department ruling that basically bans all Red Cross volunteers of German, Austro-hungarian, Turkish or bulgarian descent. “Hey - These are loyal second generation Americans - what are thinking?” they reply in very polite terms. All this is capped off at the end of the week with an article that explains that military titles, ranks, and US uniforms will be used by the Red Cross in the war theater. The role and relationship of the Red Cross and the US government, and the interplay between the two at this dynamic time in history is a story I personally find amazing and yet another great example of the echoes we see today from the War that changed the world! Great War Project Now we are joined by Mike shuster, former NPR correspondent and curator for the Great War Project blog. Link: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheGreatWar War in the Sky: This week in our great war in the sky segment - we are going to tell you the story of Louis Bennet from West Virginia. The story comes from a letter received by his mother, Sallie Bennet - four years after Louis’ death in the skies over the western front -- a letter written by a German officer named Emil Merkelbach who fought against Louis at that fateful last battle that ended his life. Louis Bennett, was a Yale educated young man with big ambitions for his role in the war. He organized the West Virginia Flying Corps in early 1917 with the idea of training pilots to join the U.S. Army as part of a proposed West Virginia aerial unit. But the War Department rejected this idea and required that Louis go through the standard Army training program-- something he was not at all interested in. So he joined the British Royal Air Force, the best way he saw to get to the action as quick as possible. Louis only served for ten days before being shot down, but in those ten days he fearlessly downed three enemy planes and nine balloons. This earned him the distinction of being designated a flying ACE, becoming West Virginia’s only World War I ACE. Here is Merkelbach’s account of Louis Bennet’s final battle from the letter he sent to Louis’ mother Sallie - Although it’s a bit long, we are including the entire passage. “I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO ADMIRE THE KEENNESS AND BRAVERY OF YOUR SON; FOR THIS REASON I SHOULD LIKE TO GIVE YOU THE FOLLOWING SHORT DESCRIPTION HIS FINAL BATTLE. . . . [music] I HAD BEEN UP IN MY BALLOON FOR SEVERAL HOURS OBSERVING, AND WAS AT A HEIGHT OF 1000 METERS. OVER THE ENEMY’S FRONT CIRCLED CONTINUOUSLY TWO HOSTILE AIRPLANES. . . . I IMMEDIATELY GAVE THE COMMAND TO MY MEN BELOW TO HAUL IN MY BALLOON AS I SAW [ANOTHER] GERMAN BALLOON . . . PLUNGE TO EARTH BURNING. AT THE SAME MOMENT I SAW THE HOSTILE FLYER - YOUR SON LOUIS - COME TOWARD MY BALLOON AT TERRIFIC SPEED, AND IMMEDIATELY THE DEFENSIVE FIRE OF MY HEAVY MACHINE RIFLES BELOW AND OF THE ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS BEGAN; BUT THE HOSTILE AVIATOR DID NOT CONCERN HIMSELF ABOUT THAT. . . . [HE] OPENED FIRE ON ME. . . . THE HOSTILE MACHINE WAS SHOT INTO FLAMES BY THE FIRE OF MY MACHINE GUNS. THE ENEMY AVIATOR - YOUR SON - TRIED TO SPRING FROM THE AEROPLANE BEFORE THE LATTER PLUNGED TO THE GROUND AND BURNED COMPLETELY. A BOLD AND BRAVE OFFICER HAD MET HIS DEATH. I HOPE THAT THE FOREGOING LINES, A MEMORIAL TO YOUR SON, WILL BE RECEIVED BY YOU LIVING— HE WAS MY BRAVEST ENEMY. HONOR TO HIS MEMORY. WITH RESPECT, EMIL MERKELBACH” Louis Bennett Jr.’s courage and skill clearly inspired those around him: From the enemy German army that buried him with full military honors, to his mother who went on to memorialize him across multiple countries, and finally to Emil Merkelbach, who was inspired to write a respectful letter four years after they had fought in the great War In The Sky 100 years ago. This story of Sallie Maxwell Bennett and her son Louis comes from Appalachian Magazine. The link is in the podcast notes. Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America." Today - most of us know nothing about this American tradition - except our next guest - who is bringing Chautauqua back to Nebraska - with a WW1 theme! Here to tell us about it is "Jerry" Meyer, Historian at the Nebraska National Guard Museum. Jerry, welcome to WW1 Centennial News. [Jerry: Chautauqua is sort of like the circus coming to town - without the critters and the siamese twins - can you tells us about the history of it?] [Jerry - tell us about how your bringing this idea back in Nebraska with a WW1 theme...] Thank you! It was one of the many army training camps built in 1917 as we prepared to go “over there” and it was in fact, the largest WWI training camp in the nation. Camp Sherman is now a National Guard training facility, and it will be part of a nine-day commemoration in honor of its centennial--- and of the contributions made by all those who served in the Great War. The commemoration will last from July 1st to the 9th and includes guided tours of the military complex -- where the original firing range once stood… There will be re-enactments, fireworks, live firing demonstrations, and a historical film screening. There have been many commemoration events across France - this past week, including, yes, the Queen Mary II sailing from St. Nazaire to New York City. Sailing alongside the Queen are four sailing crews manning the best multi-hull yachts in the world. The Queen Mary II was built solely for luxury - yet, at last report she is currently in the lead, dominating the powerful trimarans built for speed. This historic race was organized by the Mission du Centenaire, the French commission for the WW1 centennial, with support from the French Foreign Ministry. As a celebration of Franco-American friendship over the century, all of these ships are headed straight for the foot of the Statue of Liberty in New York City -- a fitting testament of the two nations’ alliance. Meanwhile in Brest, France -- members of the French military, including the French Navy Band, participated in an international military ceremony. Robert Dalessandro, the Chair of the US World War One Centennial Commission, and acting secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission - the ABMC, was on hand, to represent those organizations for these special moments. Brest, as we’ve noted in previous episodes, is where the famous Harlem Hellfighters first arrived in Europe. They left an impression on the city, most notably a legacy of Jazz excellence because of 369th incredible regimental band. Fittingly, a large music festival has been organized across France to celebrate musicians who fought in the war -- or created works in response to the war. Events are being held in Brest, Saint Nazaire, Issoudun [EE-SU-DUN], Nice and Chemins Des Dames, each with their own local focus and many incorporating remembrance of the American presence there 100 years ago. We put several links in the podcast notes about these varied events. Like a number of other companies - WW1 was a powerful shaping force for the company as these iron horses. Anoop Prakash, a Marine Corps veteran and director of U.S. marketing for Harley Davidson says “General John ‘Black Jack’ Pershing was convinced that using new technology like motorcycles would provide great agility and ease of use and durability in wartime. So we have had a long history since that time in serving the military… It’s been a continuous link in our history.” Today there are veteran founded motorcycle clubs and rides all over the country.
