Gen Z's Gender Divide Goes Beyond Politics

The Odd Years

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 21, 2025 41:34

We are kicking things off with a topic Amy has been fascinated by - the gender divide in American politics and why it's so pronounced among Gen Z.In the past, young voters have reliably supported the Democratic candidate for president, regardless of gender. Just four years ago, a majority of both young men and young women voted for Joe Biden. But in 2024 the picture looked different. A majority of young women did support Kamala Harris. But a majority of young men cast their vote for Donald Trump. In fact, 56% of young men voted for Trump compared to only 4% of young women. None of this was a surprise to Daniel Cox, our guest today. He's been watching this gender divergence unfold for years now, and he says it's happening on so many levels: that gender informs Gen Z's views on a range of issues from social, to culture to, of course, political. So Amy wanted to talk to him about why this is, will it last, and what's making this cohort so different from previous generations.Daniel Cox is Director of the Survey Center on American Life and a senior fellow in polling and public opinion at the American Enterprise Institute. He is the author of the forthcoming book, Uncoupled, which will focus on the growing gender gap in American society. He also writes the Substack American Storylines. Join Bryan DeAngelis, Partner at Penta, as he sits down with Daniel Cox, Director and Founder of the Survey Center on American Life, and Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, to dissect this unprecedented scenario through the lens of new polling. Additionally, they discuss the public's evolving views on immigration policy and changing demographics within the Democratic party, and how these factors could influence the upcoming election.

Americans are becoming less religious and two new surveys out just last week punctuate just how quickly that's happening. According to the Public Religion Research Institute, 26 percent of Americans now consider themselves unaffiliated with any religion. That's up from 21 percent a decade ago and just 6 percent in the early '90s. According to Gallup, the number of Americans who attend religious services weekly or nearly every week has fallen from 42 percent in 2000 to 30 percent now. In this installment of the 538 Politics podcast, Galen speaks with a roundtable of experts on religion and society about why the decline has happened and what it portends for American communities, networks and politics. Interview by Kris PetersAustralian rock legends The Poor release their first album in over 10 years on February 3 when High Price Deed is unleashed on a world that might not be quite ready for it.After the one two punch (pun intended) of Round One (2009) and Round 2 (2010) The Poor seemingly vanished from the circuit and it appeared as though an illustrious chapter in Australian music may have come to a premature end. Those fears were allayed a couple of years ago when The Poor re-emerged with new guitarist Daniel Cox in tow and set about reclaiming their place atop the Aussie rock tree. Cox brought a fresh outlook to the band with his ferociously awesome guitar playing adding yet another dimension to the sonic structure of The Poor. They have toured relentlessly both at home and abroad since then, drip feeding new singles from High Price Deed at irregular intervals, heightening expectation with each and making a silent promise to their fans that The Poor are back, and back with a vengeance. The fruits of that labour will be on display for the world to judge this Friday when High Price Deed hits the open market, and trust me when I tell you fans will not be disappointed.Rather than conduct the standard phone interview one on one, HEAVY accepted the band's offer to attend practice earlier this week and take the opportunity to grill all four members - vocalist Skenie, guitarist Daniel Cox, drummer Gavin Hansen and bass player Matt Whitby - a task which seemed like a set up from the start. It could have turned out nasty being outnumbered with such odds but we stood firm and spoke our mind - and lived to relay the tale. We focussed initially on the new album and structure before running through our recent review track by track and seeing if the band agreed with my sentiments."Play rock and roll really loud, hard and heavy," vocalist Skenie offered, summing up High Price Deed in one sentence. "As you say in HEAVY, we wanna fuck shit up."High Price Deed is the first album released by The Poor since Round 2 in 2010, with the band agreeing unanimously that this album sees them return to their best."It's very different sonically," Skenie began when asked to compare the two releases. "I just don't think that we got the last two albums right, looking back on them now. The way this one is sounding and the way the songs came together... it was a lot of hard work... but it just felt right."This is greeted by a mock round of applause from the rest of the gang, who are all spread throughout the rehearsal room waiting for their chance to step in and have their way with me.So farThe Poor have released the singles Payback's A Bitch, Lover, Cry Out, Let Me Go and Take The World from High Price Deed, with Skenie admitting that while they do represent the album faithfully, they just scratch the surface of what to expect musically."Yeah, but there's more surprises coming," he teased."They're all a bit different, aren't they?" added guitarist Daniel Cox."They all have their own identities, but there's some songs on there that will surprise people as well," finished drummer Gavin Hansen. From there HEAVY ran through our album review track by track and asked if we were on the right path, and that's when things really got interesting.Listen to the full interview to hear The Poor critique our critic, run through each song and its meaning, talk about the musical direction of the album, recount some stories from the past including an impromptu jazz acapella performance, tell us about their upcoming album launch at the Wallaby Hotel, their upcoming European tour, an Australian tour later in the year and more.If you are a fan of The Poor this is a must listen, and if you're just a fan of a good time and a great laugh even better.

Today we are continuing the discussion of the myth of Christian persecution in this country by looking at one of the most infamous martyr stories in recent history. Evangelical Christianity took the opportunity to run with the story of a teenage girl, with her whole life ahead of her, brutally murdered for refusing to deny her faith in God. The story shocked the world, and was weaponized and used at every turn as supposed proof of the growing danger that Christians are in because of their faith. Larry Hogan endorsing Kelly Schulz, and Donald Trump endorsing, 2020 election-denying Daniel Cox.  The Washington Post reports that Cox and Schulz are in statistical dead heat.    One of the big stories of the election is the number of mail-in ballots requested, and the unique rules in Maryland that don't allow processing of them until two days after election day.  The Post reports that almost 497,000 mail ballots were requested by Maryland voters, a record, and that 16.6 percent of registered Democrats and 8.7 percent of registered Republicans requested mail ballots.  Ballots must be postmarked, or dropped in an official drop box, by 8 pm July 19th. A close race, the two day wait, plus other outdated rules which require hand-opening and tabulation of mail ballots, may mean results will be days and possibly a week or more away.  Democracy can be slow, but when the people are allowed to participate, it's a good thing.  More details on the election and how to vote in Maryland are at  AmericanDemocracyMinute.org Granny D said “Democracy is not something we have, it's something we DO.”   For the American Democracy Minute, I'm Brian Beihl.

The idea that men and women are different is baked into our culture, from rhymes about sugar and spice and all things nice to the notion that we are from entirely different planets - Mars and Venus in particular. A new study from the Survey Center on American Life suggests that the differences between men and women - in the ways they live their lives, spend their time, interact with each other, and engage in politics - are actually growing. This isn't just about men and women migrating to different political parties, it is about an increasing divide in the mental worlds that we inhabit in America. One of the authors of that study is Daniel Cox, the Director of the Center on American Life at the American Enterprise Institute. Dr. Cox‘s work is frequently featured in the Atlantic CNN and the Washington Post.

Contrary to the predictions of political consultants and commentators, both of America's two major parties have continued to be politically relevant since the GOP broke a decades-long congressional losing streak in the 1994 midterm elections. The American government has been closely divided, with each party taking trifecta control of the government only a very few number of times. But even when they did have the trifecta-- that is control of the presidency Senate and the House of Representatives-- neither party passed much significant domestic policy legislation, aside from some tax cuts by Republicans and the Affordable Care by Democrats. Fast-forward to the current moment, President Joe Biden has seen his approval rating among fellow Democrats fall recently, as some of his own voters have become dissatisfied. Biden's more left-wing critics have faulted him recently for not delivering on promises, and they've cited polls showing that the public supports their ideas like free college education or universal health care coverage, but they haven't been able to enact these policy ideas. Meanwhile, on the other side of the partisan divide, the Republican party has many of its own internal divisions. And they're not just about Donald Trump, either. Polls have consistently shown that GOP voters don't really like any other Republican politicians besides Donald Trump, But other than wanting to live in the White House again, Trump himself seems to have no actual policies. In 2020, he refused to even create an official party platform for the Republican party. And more recently, the Republican Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, refused to say what sorts of policies that he would pursue if the GOP controlled the Senate. It's a confusing situation. Republicans won't talk about policy and Democrats can't enact it. So what's going on here? In this episode, we're joined by Daniel Cox, director of the Survey Center on American Life, which is a non-partisan project of the American Enterprise Institute that focuses on original research and polling about cultural, political, and technological change in American society. This week my guest is author Dominick McHugh, author of the recent book, The Big Parade – Meredith Wilson's Musicals From The Music Man To 1491.  Dominick is Professor of Musicology at the University of Sheffield in the UK. His previous books include Loverly, The Life And times of My Fair Lady, Adapting The Wizard Of Oz – Musical Versions From Baum To MGM And Beyond, and he has also served as editor of The Letters Of Cole Porter, and The Complete Lyrics Of Alan Jay Lerner. As it turns out, the timing of this episode couldn't be more perfect since, after being derailed when both of its stars contracted COVID, the big, new Broadway revival of The Music Man, starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster is supposed to return to Broadway tonight!  Many listeners will know by now that The Music Man is one of my all-time favorite musicals, and one that I consider to be one the greatest musicals of all-time as well. This is a show that I know backwards and forward, inside and out. Over my career I have danced in it, choreographed it, produced it, lectured about it, and seen it countless times. So, it was a great pleasure to discover in The Big Parade, and during this interview, so many remarkable and surprising things I didn't know about the show. Especially the extraordinary challenges that Meredith Wilson grappled with during its development – including, as recently reported in the New York Times, his efforts to include a disabled character in the show who was in intended to be a major focus of the story.   Dominick also shares the story of Liza Redfield, who became the first woman to serve as the Conductor/Musical Director of a Broadway show when she took over that role during the original run of The Music Man. And that's only half of the book! The second half cover Wilson's three other major musicals, about which I knew even less, and we will discuss that in next weeks episode. I found it fascinating, and I think you will as well.  This episode is made possible in part through the generous contributions of Backstage Pass Patron Level Members GARY FULLER & RANDY EVERETT. Thank you so much, Gary and Randy!  If you love this podcast and want to delve even deeper into the world of Broadway musicals, I invite you to become a member of the "Broadway Nation Backstage Pass Club". Genuine friendships are one of the core qualities of a great life.Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero called a friend “a second self.” British author C.S. Lewis exalted friendship as adding “value to survival.” Whether in antiquity or modernity, friendship plays an integral part in the richness of the human experience for men and women alike. However, recent studies have shown that the amount of friendships the average man has are on the decline.Daniel Cox, founder and director of the Survey Center on American Life and a senior research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, sits down with Acton Line producer Gabriel Geagea to speak further on his latest article published in the National Review, “American men suffer a friendship recession,” an article focused on the diminishing rates of male friendships in the United States and its implications on America's social sphere. If friendship is indeed an inherent good, what threats does its absence present to modern American society? In addition to analyzing the root causes of this decrease in companionship and its effect on our nation's social nature, Daniel and Gabriel discuss how emerging social norms can alter the ways in which society views friendships, and what society is to do to ensure good male friendships reappear as a strong thread in our American social fabric.Do the American people view friendship as essential and giving value to our survival, or is it seen as an unnecessary commodity?American Men Suffer Friendship RecessionBio | Daniel CoxThe Survey Center on American LifeAmerican Enterprise InstituteThe joy of fatherhood: How sacrifice brings meaning to lifeWilfred McClay on friendship new and old – Acton Institute PowerBlogHow fatherhood leads to flourishing – Acton Institute PowerBlogBridging Income Inequality: The Subsidiarity Of Friendship – Acton Institute PowerBlog Subscribe to Acton Institute Events podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

According to a recent survey, the percentage of men with at least six close friends has fallen by half since 1990, and men today are 5X more likely to say they don't even have a single close friend than they were thirty years ago. What are the reasons for this seeming friendship recession among men? Today I talk to the man who conducted that survey to try to find out. His name is Daniel Cox and he's the director of the Survey Center on American Life. Today on the show Daniel takes us on a tour of the state of friendship among modern men, beginning with the fact that men today have fewer friends and feel less emotionally connected to the ones they do have. We explore the irony that while people have long said that traditional norms of masculinity are what's holding men back from having fulfilling relationships, it's younger men, who are more progressive on those norms, who are struggling the most to make friends. Daniel talks about the fact that the male friendship recession isn't pandemic related, but rather seems to be linked to the weakening of ties to community institutions like church, the changing nature of work, and the fact that Americans are spending more and more time with their families. From there we go down a bunch of interesting avenues, including the fact that husbands rely more on their wives for emotional support than vice versa, why Daniel finds it concerning that young men today are more likely to first talk about their problems with their parents rather than their friends than was true 30 years ago, and the irony that single men are struggling the most to make friends even though they need them the most. This episode focuses on the powerful impact of birds on our mental health, particularly during lockdown. With heartbreaking honesty, TV's favourite GP Dr Amir Khan reveals how birds have helped him through the daily stress of working on the front line over the pandemic. Dr Amir explains the science behind nature's effect on the chemicals in our brains; why he is starting to prescribe nature to his patients; and how birds are a quick fix for nature therapy. Dr Amir joins a call to action for investment in urban green spaces, currently seen as a luxury, not a right, for the most socially deprived. Mya-Rose talks to the University of Sheffield's Dr Jo Birch about her research on the importance of accessible nature for the wellbeing of urban and BAME young people, whilst farmers in Warwickshire explain how a Wildlife Trust tree sparrow project has helped them deal with the isolation and pressures of their work. Get Birding listeners tell emotional stories about birds helping them find solace through personal suffering over the past year. Shetland based musicians Northern Flyway talk to nature beatboxer Jason Singh about their audio-visual work that explores the connection between people and birds, and Mya-Rose reveals her Bird To Watch over the next fortnight.Host: Dr Mya-Rose CraigMusic Host: Jason SinghGuests: Dr Mya-Rose Craig, Dr Amir Khan, GP, Dr Daniel Cox, Uni of Exeter, Dr Jo Birch, Uni of Sheffield, Ian Jelley Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, Nicky Saunders, farmer in Warwckshire, Northern Flyway [Inge Thomson and Jenny Sturgeon]Producer: Tom BonnettExecutive Producers: Jane Gerber & Katie DerhamProduction Manager: Cara GhoshalProduction Assistant: Louis Facey Sponsors: Severn Trent Water & Swarovski OptikMusic fromAwekids Collective - Dendroblum [Jason Singh]Pogington Bear [Chad Crouch] - Pink GradientChad Crouch - Marsh Wrens [Instrumental]Chad Crouch - Cove [Instrmental]Podington Bear - MoodswingChad Crouch - BarefootChad Crouch - NegentropyChad Crouch - BackwaterPodington Bear - JetsamNorthern Flyway - Rosefinch, Gannets, Lost Lapwing, Curlew, Loch Carron FlameField Recordings:Simon NortheastGenghis AttenboroughInchadneyJuskiddinkPodcast art by Make ProductionsFollow us:www.twitter.com/getbirdingpodwww.facebook.com/getbirdingpodwww.instagram.com/getbirdingpod Find out more about the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust Tree Sparrow Project: https://www.warwickshirewildlifetrust.org.uk/working-farmers-and-landowners/arden-farm-wildlife-network Find out more about Northern Flyway: https://www.facebook.com/northernflyway/ Discover Jason Singh's music at: http://jasonsinghthing.com/ Find out more about Severn Trent's biodiversity projects: https://www.stwater.co.uk/about-us/environment/biodiversity/Severn Trent Water is committed to providing a secure supply of clean water across the Midlands. American Enterprise Institute's Daniel Cox, director of the Survey Center On American Life, discusses the troubling findings of their new research that shows an increasing number of Americans are willing to view violence as a legitimate tool for political or social change. While both extremes of the political spectrum have individuals willing to use violence, the survey shows a surprising percentage of those on the Right in that category. The conversation also includes the increase in acceptance of conspiracy theories among Americans, especially among evangelical Christians. This is the full interview. The version that aired on our partner radio stations was shortened due to time constraints. I was careful to make sure the context of the conversation was not changed by the edits. - Mike

5 Quarantine Ideas to Get Healthy and Better Yourself

Functional Medicine Research with Dr. Nikolas Hedberg

I’d like to share with you all the things I’ve been doing since the COVID-19 pandemic started to better myself and stay as healthy as possible. I like the quote, “Whenever one door closes, another door opens.” Of course, I miss doing many of the things I normally do to have fun and interact with other people but this has been a time to take advantage of the many opportunities available. No matter what kind of health issues you’re dealing with, some of these ideas can have significant impact on your overall health. Birding Birding or birdwatching has been a growing passion of mine for the last few years but quarantine has given me more time to dedicate to this fascinating hobby. Recent research by Cox and Graston found that people living in neighborhoods with more birds are less likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, and stress. The study participants had lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress simply by looking at birds, trees, and shrubs. The more birds the participants could see, the better their mental health. The study participants who spent less time outdoors had higher levels of anxiety and depression. Dr Daniel Cox, who led the study, stated: "This study starts to unpick the role that some key components of nature play for our mental well-being." Birds around the home, and nature in general, show great promise in preventative health care, making cities healthier, happier places to live." Here are my tips to get into birding so you can avoid any of the mistakes I made: 1. Only buy Squirrel Buster feeders from Brome. These will save you a lot of time and money if a squirrel finds your feeder. Squirrels will eat all the food and sometimes destroy a feeder, but they have no chance of getting the food in a Squirrel Buster feeder. “Fiery Hot” squirrel food blends that are supposed to burn the squirrel’s mouth with hot pepper oil just don’t work well so save your money. 2. Avoid bird mix blends that are filled with millet, milo, and wheat. These are cheap fillers that most birds won’t eat so it may seem like you’re saving money by buying cheap bird food but most of it will just be thrown to the ground by the birds. Start out with just black oil sunflower seeds which will attract the most amount of birds. 3. A water feature is just as important as a bird feeder to attract birds to your property. 4. When you put up a new feeder, sprinkle some seed below the feeder on the ground to attract birds. 5. 120 million birds die every year flying into windows. Put up some stained-glass features or buy anti-bird stickers to put on your windows near the feeder so no one ends of dying. Whenever I’m stressed I like to sit outside on my porch and watch the birds come to my feeders. It always puts a smile on my face no matter how stressed I may be. Astronomy I’ve been into astronomy for many years but it had fallen by the wayside the last few years. You don’t necessarily need a telescope to get started as you can use binoculars in the beginning. The stars and the planets are always there for you to enjoy. I just saw the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn the other night and I’m still in awe of how amazing it was. You can install an astronomy application called Stellarium on your computer or cell phone which tracks the entire night sky. It makes it easy to find any planet, the moon, or stars with a built-in compass so you can find anything quickly by whatever direction you’re facing. Astronomy makes you realize how vast the universe really is and the great astrophysicist Carl Sagan really puts things in perspective with his Pale Blue Dot narrative: Coding Learning how to code is very easy these days due to the sheer number of free resources. I am currently learning HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, so I can build my own websites and web applications. The key to learning to code is to have a passion project that you can begin working on right away.

That the young are less religious than the old is not news. But the alienation of today’s millennials from religious faith may indeed be something new, and far more permanent than many have thought. That’s one of the ominous implications of a new report published by the American Enterprise Institute, titled, “The Decline of Religion in American Family Life.” The report found that young people often leave faith at an early age and that the proportion of young people involved in regular religious activities and being raised in religious homes is declining. In this week’s podcast, Jonathan Silver, the incoming editor of Mosaic and the host of the Tikvah Podcast, sits down with one of the report’s co-authors, Daniel Cox, for a discussion of millennials, religion, and family life. Though Cox’s work, and this conversation, do not focus on Jews in particular, his findings about the state of Christianity in the U.S. have deep implications for American Jewry and American Jewish flourishing. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble. This podcast was recorded in front of a live audience of Tikvah alumni and Society members in Washington, DC. If you want to learn more about joining the Tikvah Society, click here.
