Ida Beerhalter is a sought after international, financial advisor and investment powerhouse. Since 2012 she has been the Co-Head IOME, a private investment partnership of women in the Gulf region. Ida and Claudia are talking about  the importance of saying "yes" to opportunities, even if you feel unqualified, as others see potential in you that you may not see yourself. We further discuss, how women investors tend to ask harder questions and focus on concrete metrics like cash-on-cash returns rather than getting carried away by projections. Ida advocates for women to exercise the power of their money and not delegate financial management without understanding. Sustainability is a key focus for Ida's future projects.Ida feels relaxed approaching 60, with the mindset that she can do anything but doesn't need to do everything. She values small moments of happiness, like appreciating new trees in her garden. Ida shares her admiration for her parents for their resilience in overcoming war trauma and building their lives. About her experience in the Middle East Ida says, that the Saudi culture is particularly welcoming and gentle, allowing for cultural mistakes and learning. Here she truly learned the importance of timing and context when addressing sensitive topics, and she developed more patience and discretion in conversations, applying this globally. We talk about Women and Finance and in Ida's experience, as the co-lead of a women-run business in the Middle East, focusing on empowering women to manage their wealth, she emphasizes the importance of understanding financial terms and asking for absolute numbers rather than percentages. Ida notes that women investors often have a different, more cautious approach compared to men.###EXCITING NEWS ON MY FRONT: Season 4 is supported by the iconic Danish shirt brand BRITT SISSECK  Please use my code SHIFTHAPPENS at checkout for 20% off of your first purchase.*Valid on full price items only.###To learn more about my guest Ida Beerhalter, please visit her social media pages:LinkeIn: Ida's ProfileTo learn more about SHIFT HAPPENS, click here To learn more about Claudia's business Curated Conversations and her Salons in New York, Zurich and Berlin, click hereYou can also connect with Claudia on Instagram @shifthappens.podcast and LinkedIn at ClaudiaMahlerNYCThis podcast is created, produced and hosted by Claudia Mahler.Social Media support Magdalena Reckendrees

Travis Schugg, Vice President of Staffing Services at VieMed Healthcare Staffing ("VHS"), joins Discover Lafayette to share how VHS utilizes technology to meet the burgeoning staffing needs across all healthcare specialties in the U. S. He is responsibile for steering the company's long-term strategic direction and day-to-day operations.  Travis moved to Lafayette in 2021 to join VHS after a meeting in Phoenix with VieMed founder, Casey Hoyt. The challenges of recruiting and retaining staff during COVID were issues everyone was trying to figure out, when all of a sudden you couldn't go into people's homes to care for their medical needs. Travis says that respiratory therapists and ICU nurses were the hottest commodities out there at that time. The two men picked each other's brains on this topic: Travis had fifteen years experience in recruiting, and Casey, along with Michael Moore and the VieMed team, were building the best in class respiratory therapy in the U. S. "Over the course of our thirty minute meeting, it became a chess match as to who could pick each other's brain best!" A few weeks after that initial encounter, Travis reached out to Casey Hoyt and jokingly said, "I think I can do some damage with you!" Casey asked him to create a business plan for VieMed to get into the medical healthcare staffing arena. Travis came up with a 50-page business plan and they were off to creating VHS. VHS is a complementary service for VieMed. Historically, healthcare systems, government agencies, and organizations like VieMed would recruit through their Human Resource departments, posting a job and hoping people would apply. "We flipped the script. Recruitment should be more on the offensive, it should be outbound. We promote our brand....we don't just sit and wait for people to apply." VHS started out by visiting every hospital in Louisiana and telling their story. Then they spread across the Gulf Region. Today, just a bit over two short years after inception, VHS recruits for positions open in Massachusetts, Ohio, Vermont, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina, and other places across the U. S. VHS has staff in 15 states, and is building organically. Travis believes that VHS offers the best recruitment and workforce team anywhere between Dallas and Atlanta, South of Nashville, being based right here in Lafayette LA. The main specialties in which VHS currently recruits are in nursing, social workers (public and private sector), respiratory therapy, and physicians. VHS also recruits in the allied care fields for workers in pharmacy, imaging and lab techs. They serve employers needing assistance with locum tenens and correctional health positions. There are currently 2400 jobs and when you visit https://jobs.viemedstaffing.com/, you will see an incredible listing of jobs available. Staffing is a $170 billion industry and healthcare staffing accounts for $44-45 billion of that number. It is a unique niche that has been waiting to be met. VHS is growing as it helps their clients, both practitioners and health facilities, by getting to understand their clients' needs. The "why" behind a hiring allows VHS to recruit more successfully and meet the individual needs of each client. Travis explained that the health industry has changed dramatically regarding outside contract help. Fifteen years ago, people wanted a hospital with very few contract workers. The barrier has broken down and this mindset has flipped. Studies show that institutions with a more diverse workforce have better health outcomes for their patients. The contract workers have experienced more, worked in different settings across the country, and bring a plethora of skills to the job setting. Today, facilities are keeping 20- 30% of their workforce as contract labor, and thes health contractors fill in as needed, on weekends, nights, or other, which benefits everyone involved. A new dynamic is that many professionals want to tr...

Welcome to the sixty-second episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast and I'm your host Mark Hasara, a former Air Force KC-135 pilot, flying all over the world passing gas! Recently I had a conversation with a colleague on how far the Air Force tanker community had come since Deseet Stomr and the old Strategic Air Command days of the Single Integrated Operations Plan, the nuclear war plan. I felt the tanker community during Desert Storm was not prepared for high-density, high-ops-tempo air refueling operations because it wasn't our primary focus. This episode lays out what I feel are the air refueling lessons learned during the Desert Storm air campaign.  This episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast is sponsored and financially supported by the book Tanker Pilot found on Amazon which can be purchased in hardback, softback (photos in black and white), Kindle, and Audible (extra file contains the color pictures). Featured speakers: Ambassador Patrick Theros, Dr. David Pollock, Dr. Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, and Dr. Banafseh Keynoush. Synopsis: As the Middle East awaits the outcome of the Vienna talks on reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and the P5+1, Gulf states and other powers in the Middle East engage in multi-party consultations on the future of the region. All are preparing for a new geopolitical stage to be set when, or if, Iran rejoins the regional economy and any changed stipulations of a new JCPOA. Should these talks succeed, Iran will likely seek to maintain (or even grow) its influence in the region, while enhancing its trade and economic relations. Various GCC states have anticipated this shift in the geopolitical conditions by opening talks with Tehran. In late 2021, the UAE's national security adviser, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, visited Tehran while the Saudis and Iranians have had an ongoing direct dialogue for a year in Baghdad. The United States has played a role in improving cross-regional talks as well. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently visited Morocco, Algeria, Bahrain, UAE, and Israel. Blinken sequentially met with the foreign ministers of the UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, and Israel in Tel Aviv, and leaders of Iraq, UAE, Jordan, and Egypt met in Aqaba a day before. The war in Ukraine has also introduced new possibilities for improved regional relations, as it disrupts energy, trade, and economies in general. Should these JCPOA talks prove unsuccessful, however, the Gulf states may be more hesitant to continue their de-escalation efforts with Iran. Growing normalization with Israel could also impact some GCC relations with Iran, regardless of whether a new JCPOA is agreed or not. The UAE, Morocco, and Bahrain signed normalization agreements with Israel in 2020 and 2021, and other Arab countries have seemingly warmed to the idea of opening channels of communication as well. Ongoing proxy conflicts between Iran, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Israel, especially in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, have left the geopolitics of the region in an even more complicated position, with a strong potential for change in historic alignments and rivalry in the region. Whether the new JCPOA is signed or not, the Gulf states will see a direct impact on the geopolitics of the region, with the balance of power potentially shifting, and creating a potential for increased conflict. How will the new geopolitical scene impact seemingly strong bilateral Gulf ties? Will it create new relationships? How do the GCC states see their relationships with Israel and Iran playing out? Will the U.S. continue to play the major security role in the Gulf in a post-JCPOA situation? How do other international parties see the situation evolving?

Farah provides her professional and personal experience, with global insights, into where we stand in relation to the gender gap in the construction, engineering and architecture industries.Farah and Henry discuss her experience as a woman in the AEC sector, what we all need to do to address gender bias in the industry, and how we can look at gender diversity as an opportunity instead of a problem to solve.“The pandemic has actually showed us how new way of working and doing business. And we should be taking this approach, taking this is as an opportunity to really address the issues of gender diversity, to really address inclusion and diversity within our workplace, and also address how we can inspire the next generation.”“So I think it starts from not just women in the industry, but also the men, and anybody who is part of this industry to really engage more time and effort to actually go out and talk to the younger generation, talk to our children. It starts from our homes, to start creating that role model effect. And also explaining the power of this industry in creating a better, more resilient future.”“We really require a co-creative environment, collaboration and diverse thinking to resolve the climate emergency. It's not just women, or it's not just men, it's together.”“Because women have to play a lot of roles: a role of a daughter, a role of a friend, a role of a sister, or a mother. I think that wiring of brain kind of helps to women to look at all these climate diversity and challenges we have, and come up with a more collaborative way of co-creating the future.”About Farah Naz, Award-Winning Climate Change StrategistFarah Naz is an award-winning Climate Change strategist with over 20 years experience in the construction sector gained in the USA, UK, Southeast Asia and most recently the United Arab Emirates (UAE). She is a Chartered Engineer (UK), Fellow of CIBSE, LEED and WELL AP and Verified Research Expert for Dubai Future Foundation. With such clear evidence of inequality and lack of parity, we need to be asking, why?   The simple fact is women bear the majority of unpaid responsibilites for childcare, get paid less than men for the same work and in some cultures, despite high levels of education, are not afforded the freedom to work due to gender stereotypes.   According to McKinsey, disparity is particularly apparent in the Middle East, where women are the lowest work force participants in the world at just 24.6%.   I was fascinated to hear from this week's podcast guest, Gulf CX Professional of the Year, Maya Kalifah, about her views on how female empowerment is the key to shifting male attitudes, and how changes being made by GCC leaders will facilitate a brighter future for women to rise up and take their part in the fourth industrial revolution.   Maya is one inspiring woman in CX, so tune in to hear her story of growing up in war-torn Lebanon, witness her incredibly powerful feminism and see how she is using her voice to leverage opportunities for other women, as CX grows at pace in the Gulf Region.   Read more and subscribe to our channels   Sign up https://bit.ly/2ZDYCcB Youtube  https://bit.ly/3jdBU2w  LinkedIn https://bit.ly/3a0cDVx Instagram https://bit.ly/30Aq0bM Show notes  https://bit.ly/2ZBcILF Twitter https://bit.ly/3fzxLD2

Gulf scholar Sigurd Neubauer’s The Gulf Region and Israel: Old Struggles, New Alliances makes a significant contribution to our understanding of what drives shifting alliances in the Middle East, an ever more volatile part of the world. Shunned by Arab states for much of its existence, Israel has become in recent years a key factor in efforts by Gulf states to punch above their weight, shape the greater Middle East in their mould, box in countries like Iran and Turkey, and manage their reputations in Washington and ties to the United States. A keen student of the region, Neubauer clearly lays out the limitations of burgeoning alliances in the absence of the resolution of the Middle East’s myriad conflicts among which are the dispute between Israelis and Palestinians and the rift between Gulf states. In doing so, he has written an easily accessible book that is must read for anyone, even those with only a cursory interest in a part of the world that too often impacts the lives of those far beyond its boundaries. In May 2013, New Orleans businessman John Georges bought Baton Rouge's beloved family-owned newspaper The Advocate. At a time when media companies around the country have been down-sizing, shutting up shop, or going exclusively digital, the Baton Rouge Advocate has expanded into Acadiana and into New Orleans, ultimately vanquishing its rival there with the acquisition of the New Orleans Times Picayune. And the newspaper expansion has continued - now encompassing statewide more community papers than you can count on two hands, including New Orleans' alternative weekly, Gambit. We've known for some time that John Georges is one of the smartest business people in Louisiana. What we didn't know, until his foray into newspapers, is that he is apparently one of the smartest business people in the USA. With over 8,000 journalists laid off nationwide over 2018-19, no-less than the President of the US repeatedly assailing the press and journalists as "the enemy of the people," and media pundits referring to this era as “Mediapocalypse,” it is instructive for the country and for lovers of a free and fair press to understand what exactly is the John Georges business model that allows him to keep growing The Advocate. The person tasked with executing the Georges doctrine is Judi Terzotis, Publisher at The Advocate. Judi is a veteran media executive, who grew up in Tennessee and spent 25 years of her career at Gannett—where she spent four years as president of Gannett Louisiana and two years as president of its Gulf Region, which includes five papers in Louisiana, two in Mississippi and one in Alabama. Judi joined The Advocate parent company, Georges Media Group, in January 2018. Since then, Judi has grown the staff and circulation of The Acadiana Advocate, and played a key role in combining The New Orleans Advocate, The Times Picayune and its popular online platform NOLA.com, after the New Orleans acquisitions in 2019. Host of Out to Lunch Baton Rouge, Stephanie Riegel, is a veteran journalist herself, having worked in TV and print for over two decades and currently serving as editor of the Baton Rouge Business Report.  This one-on-one conversation over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard is a rare and valuable opportunity to understand the current state of both local and national media organizations and especially the future of news delivery. Darrell Castle talks about the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by a Hellfire missile fired from a U.S. drone. Transcription/Notes: TRUMP AND THE GENERAL Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. Today is Friday, January 10, 2020, and on this Report I will be talking about the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by a Hellfire missile fired from a U.S. drone. The attack, apparently personally ordered by President Trump, occurred at the Baghdad airport where the General had just arrived on a flight from Tehran, Iran. He was there to meet with an Iraqi named Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis who had personally planned and led the blockade attacks against the U.S. Embassy. Keep in mind that the situation is fluid and changing as I speak.  A brief background to this story tells us that first an American civilian contractor was killed and several U.S. soldiers wounded in a rocket attack on an Iraqi base near KirKuk in Iraqi Kurdistan. In response, President Trump authorized airstrikes on five camps of the attackers. The targeted organization was designated a terrorist organization by President Obama's State Department in 2009. The group has repeatedly attacked U.S. forces in Iraq. In retaliation for the U.S. bombing, protesters led by the Iraqi Muhandis, blockaded and attacked the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. Attacking embassies is a common tactic used by Middle East groups, who believe they are immune from retaliation. Remember the takeover of the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979, and the siege of the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya during President Obama's administration.   President Trump tweeted out a threat, as he termed it, and said that Iran would pay a very big price. The Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Khamenei taunted President Trump on New Year's Day by saying “there is not a damn thing you can do.” It turns out that the Ayatollah was wrong because when his top General got off his airplane and got in the car with Muhandis, they did not make it off the tarmac before a Hellfire missile fired from a U.S. drone obliterated them. I suppose the Ayatollah confused President Trump with Presidents of his past dealing, but apparently Trump wanted to send him a Hellfire message that could be read as, “I'm not Jimmy Carter and I'm not Barack Obama, and when you kill one of us I will kill you back”.  The Iranians had to retaliate, of course, so they sent some rockets into Iraqi bases where U.S. troops were stationed, apparently killing no one but appearing strong and unafraid. So, they killed some of ours and in retaliation, Trump killed some of theirs and they retaliated for that, although in a benign way designed to not require further retaliation. The President spoke to the nation and accepted their quid pro quo as the end of it as far as he is concerned. If the Iranian retaliation was planned and accepted in advance I would not be surprised. There are rumors floating around that a back channel note sent through the Swiss embassy to Tehran said that proportionate retaliation would be acceptable and I assume that means a military and not a civilian target. I'll be surprised if this tit for tat goes any further than that because I think Trump wants to use it as an opportunity to do what he promised in his campaign he would do, and that is get the U.S. out of the eternal war business. So, perhaps a quiet deal with Iran is in place, and everyone avoids embarrassment. That's just a guess on my part but it looks plausible. I admit thought that this idea of pre-planned withdrawal looks shaky now, considering the massive buildup of U.S. forces in the Gulf Region, so we will see. In response to all this fighting, the Iraqi Parliament met and voted to invite U.S. troops to leave Iraq immediately. Perhaps the President will accept their invitation and pull the U.S. out of Iraq as he promised to do in his 2016 campaign. Perhaps he will do that, but if so, it won't solve the problem unless they come home complet...

Dig Dates - New Orleans, L Fade - Austin, TX Flat Out of Heels - Miami, FL Lazarus 3D - Houston TX One Milo - Miami, FL From furry friends to furry men, personalized 3D-printed medical training models to smartphone-connected at-home lab tests, these startups are not only raising the profile of their oft-overlooked locales but changing the way the tech industry views — and invests in — this area of the county. Frank also had a chance to talk with Gerard Ramos, founder and CEO of Revelry Labs, about what the New Orleans startup scene is like, as well as what we can expect from the INNO Conf event (which just so happens to be tucked in between the two weekends of Jazz Fest!). If you’re attending — or even just in the area that weekend — make sure to block off April 30th, when we’ll be hosting Startup of the Year New Orleans at the Ace Hotel for a night of live pitching and festivities.

Leila Serhan is the Public Sector Director for the Gulf Region at Microsoft, where she has been working for the last seventeen years. In her conversation with Marilyn, Leila shares stories from her career, including her first job at a Lebanese telecom company, her early days at Microsoft, the stereotypes she's been held to because of her gender, and how she is giving back through mentorship. What's interesting about Leila is that throughout her extensive career, she's never negotiated her salary. In fact 68% of women do not negotiate their salaries, and through Leila's narrative we look at why.

John King is the co-author of The New York Times  #1 best-selling book titled Tribal Leadership. This book changed the trajectory of thinking about Organizational Culture. The premise is simple in theory – every organization is composed of tribes – naturally occurring groups of 20-150 people. However, few organizations have a repeatable roadmap for leveraging natural groups to build thriving and resilient leaders and organizations. I first heard about John and Tribal Leadership at a conference where I heard Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos and the bestselling author of Delivering Happiness, present with John. I was a huge fan of Zappos and impressed by how Tony held John is such high esteem. John has many talents and successes … too many for one episode of Inspired Wisdom. Therefore, I have split our interview into two parts. In Part I, John will share his experiences as  A professional dancer for 13 years on TV, film, and theatre Author: John directed, wrote and sold TV shows and movies in Los Angeles Coach and Trainer: John reinvented his career and leveraged his experience as a performer by leading programs for Landmark Education During his time with Landmark, John met Dave Logan. Over the next 13 years, John co-wrote two books with Dave, The Coaching Revolution, and Tribal Leadership Taught for 13 years at USC Marshall School of Business, School of Public Policy, and Annenberg School of Communication In Part II, John will go into more detail on the Tribal Leadership model and his working internationally with global organizations. Both sports physicians have tremendous football experience but a focus of the podcast is delivery of clinical care - the patient journey in setting a multidisciplinary clinical setting. Dr Della Villa highlights the ‘case manager' role of the sports physician and this model has been critical in the Isokinetic clinics in Italy. The Isokinetic Medical Group, established in 1987, is a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence. The headquarters and the very substantial Education and Research Department, directed by Professor Giulio Sergio Roi, are located in Bologna, with other outpatient clinics located in Rome, Milan, Turin, Verona and Rimini. The group has now expanded to Harley Street in London. Dr Eirale was the first sports physician recruited to Aspetar - Qatar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital and he has witnessed not just the building of a massive state-of-the art hospital but the emergence of a new focus of sports medicine excellence in the Gulf Region. If you ask most Americans when the U.S. became heavily involved in the Persian Gulf, they might cite the Iranian Hostage Crisis of 1981 or, more probably, the First Gulf War of 1990. Of course the roots of American entanglement in the region run much deeper, as W. Taylor Fain shows in his excellent new book American Ascendance and British Retreat in the Persian Gulf Region (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2008). Beginning in the 18th century, the British began to do in the Gulf what the British did in those days: build their empire. British dominance in the region lasted as long as Britain did as a Great Power, that is, until about 1945. At that point, a power vacuum of sorts developed. What is perhaps most interesting about Fain’s book is that the U.S.–which had had strong commercial ties to several Gulf states for decades–was not terribly eager to get politically involved. Britain had significant military assets in the region; the U.S. did not. Britain needed the oil; the U.S. at that time did not. Britain wanted to blunt the forces of Arab nationalism; the U.S. had a rather more favorable attitude toward “self-determination.” The Brits did their best to play up the “special relationship,” but it just wasn’t “special” enough to get the U.S. involved in what seemed to be a plainly imperial endeavor. Americans just aren’t very good at imperialism–they have no stomach for it. In the end, it wasn’t the British who convinced the U.S. to take a strong hand in Gulf affairs, but the Soviets, or rather the fear of the Soviets. The strange cocktail of pan-Arab nationalism and international socialism convinced American policymakers that vital U.S. interests were being threatened in some very out-of-the-way places. Thus the U.S. developed new “special relationships” in the region, notably with Saudi Arabia, Israel and Iran–an odd group if ever there were one! So “special” were these ties that they eventually drew the U.S. into war and, recently, occupation. The British empire, so it is said, was built in a “fit of absent mindedness.” The American empire in the Gulf was built against better judgment. With reports that the massive Gulf Coast oil spill may spread to as far away as North Carolina, restaurant owners are bracing for the worst. The eco-disaster could result in a big shortage of seafood, massive price hikes and a public perception that Gulf Coast seafood is dangerous to eat. Wednesday at 1pm ET, WAMS will talk with restaurant industry consultant Edmund Woo, who is keeping a wary eye on the latest developments. “Right now, it's too early to determine what real impact the B.P. spill will have on the restaurant industry. But, perception is reality, so restaurateurs need to get in front of the issue right away.” Woo, the author of “The 5 Hour Restaurant Work Week” and CEO of the South Carolina based Saskatoon: Steaks Fish and Wild Game restaurant franchise says that shifts are already happening in seafood harvesting. “N.O.A.A. (The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has begun restricting commercial fishing along the Gulf Coast. So now, there are fewer places to harvest seafood, especially shrimp. That’s bad news, because the U.S. seafood industry has already been hurt by cheaper imports in recent years”, says Woo. We'll ask Mr. Woo: -What it would mean for the U.S. restaurant businesses if domestic oysters, shrimp, crab and fish were not available -How much of the nation's commercial seafood harvests come from the Gulf Coast -What, if anything, industry groups like The National Restaurant Association can do to help local restaurants -How the accident will impact the supply and price of seafood for restaurants nationwide, not just in coastal areas -The potential damage from the oil slick impacting a restaurant industry already reeling from the recession -Whether Gulf Coast harvested seafood is safe to consume?
