After twenty-plus years in Los Angeles, I get a lot of invites to various shows—a friend of a friend sent over a link to a one-woman show. The caveat? It was… One night only. And…I was jet-lagged having just flown in from Europe. Fortunately, I live about five minute’s drive from the Hudson Theatre and frequent it often enough to know where to park. (Critical to LA plans). That night I had the pleasure of watching Teruko Nakajima dance her way through her life story Made in America. It was so amazing, interesting, and awe-inspiring that I immediately slid into her DMs and set up this interview… Let’s chat. I have *so* many questions. Is this Encores! transfer a royal success or does it fall short of its fairy tale potential? "Merrily We Roll Along" has long been considered the biggest flop of Stephen Sondheim's career, even as it features some of his most ambitious musical work. Now, after a successful run at the New York Theatre Workshop, a new revival of the musical starring Daniel Radcliffe, Lindsay Mendez, and Jonathan Groff comes to Broadway. We speak with director Maria Friedman, who once starred in a Haymarket production of this musical, on how she made this notoriously difficult show work. "Merrily We Roll Along" is running at Hudson Theatre through March 24, 2024.
This week, Scott welcomes the amazingly talented Jim Landis to the show! These two friends have a great chat about how Jim got started with The Walt Disney Company, the different performing jobs he had in Disneyland Park and on tour, and his transition to Los Angeles where he became a Prop Master for television and movies where he worked for Melissa McCarthy and on the Will & Grace reboot juuuuust to name a few. Jim also talks about the highlight of his career as a Prop Master, his thoughts on bringing the Hat Box Ghost to the Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom, and so much more! Jim Landis fell in love with theatre at an early age when he performed in his first production, Cyrano de Bergerac, in high school. From there, it was off to the races! He would go on to spend almost 11 years working at Disneyland as a performer, doing everything from cowboy stunt shows to national publicity tours and during that time, he would also perform in multiple Summer Stock and regional productions. He eventually moved to Los Angeles and pursued a career in television and film production as a Prop Master. While working in this field, he still made time to write plays and keep theater on the back burner. For several years, he worked with a resident theater company at The LaMirada Performing Arts Center, where he co-wrote four original musicals for younger audiences as well his own production of ‘Buffalo Betty's Wild West Revue' with Disney composer Michael Tavera. Over the years, my guest received recognition for his writing, garnering awards from Drama-Logue as well as The Eugene O'Neil Playwriting Festival in New York City. He is currently the owner of GRANDIS CREATIONS LLC. - a company that creates specialty props for television, screen, and stage for such clients as NBC, ABC, CBS, HBO, NETFLIX, PARAMOUNT + and DISNEY IMAGINEERING. Jim wrote and directed "Feast of Fools," which will play at The Hudson Theatre located at 6539 Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles. If you're going to be in the area from mid-late September of this year, visit his theatre website at https://www.harvesttheatercompany.com or call the box office at (323) 856-4249 to get tickets to this Equity west coast premiere! Hollywood Fringe 2022: SOMETHING IN THE AIR @ Hudson Theatre - Review 6.9 out of 10 - Okay!. www.latheatrebites.com Where is the in-between? In the wake of the anti-Asian hate crimes across our country, Something In The Air is a play that focuses on the lives of eight very different Asian/Asian-American college students living in America. These eight individuals come from different walks of life and from all over the diaspora, representing the diverse realities of AAPI college students in the country. They arrive at the infamous Denver Airport, ready to take flight for spring break, and, given its otherworldly nature– are forced to deal with issues within fiction and reality. A story that combines mystery, conspiracy theories, myths, and generational stories.

Mike Isaacson, artistic director and executive producer of the iconic MUNY in St. Louis, shares his producing philosophy. From his beginnings as a theatre critic to the Broadway stage, Mike chats with Hal about his key to success, the importance of giving young artists command of the stage, and what it means to be part of St. Louis’ summer ritual. Mike Isaacson is in his ninth season, and he is only the third person to hold this position in The Muny’s 101-year history. To date, he has produced 56 Muny shows, 23 of which had never been produced at The Muny before including Dreamgirls, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots and Matilda. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch named him “Theatre Artist of the Year,” noting that by “staging one impressive production after another, he made The Muny simultaneously hip and – believe it – important to our community.” During its record-breaking 100th season, The Muny became the first theatre in the world to produce the legendary Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, doing unprecedented archival work on both the artistic and the business side to make it happen. With Kristin Caskey, Isaacson has produced more than 23 Broadway musicals and plays, national tours, and off-Broadway and London productions. All told, his productions have received more than 122 Tony Award nominations and 34 Tony Awards. Most recently on Broadway, he and Caskey produced the highly acclaimed David Byrne’s American Utopia; opening this fall at The Hudson Theatre will be their production of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, starring Mathew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker. Spring of 2019, the duo co-produced the Tony-nominated Lanford Wilson’s Burn This, starring Adam Driver and Kerri Russell. Other career highlights for Isaacson include: Fun Home (2015 Tony Award, Best Musical; 2018 Olivier Award nominee, Best Musical); Legally Blonde the Musical (2011 Olivier Award, Best Musical); Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002 Tony Award, Best Musical); Red (2010 Tony Award, Best Play); The Humans (2016 Tony Award, Best Play); If/Then, starring Idina Menzel; Bring It On: The Musical (2013 Tony nomination for Best Musical); A Doll’s House 2 (2017 Tony nomination for Best Play); You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1999 Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical); The Seagull; Caroline, or Change; One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (2001 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play); and Death of a Salesman (1999 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play). For the Independent Presenters Network, Isaacson served as producer for the Broadway shows Spamalot (2005 Tony Award, Best Musical), Ragtime (revival), and The Color Purple. He has received the St. Louis Arts and Education Council’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, and in 2018, he was awarded The Broadway League’s and Theatre Development Fund’s Commercial Theater Institute “Robert Whitehead” Award for excellence in producing. He has served on the board of governors and executive committee of The Broadway League and received the Samuel J. L’Hommedieu Award. In 2016 he received the Equality Award from the St. Louis Chapter of Human Rights Campaign. To see the latest news on the MUNY, visit MUNY.org. 7 out of 10 - An Average Show! www.latheatrebites.com A normal production of the Broadway legend Les Misérables is overtaken by a bunch of foul-mouthed puppets who want to throw a revolution of their own. Both a loving tribute and a brutal deconstruction of the "greatest musical of all time," this show is full of clever twists on classic songs, improvisation, and audience interaction. Warning: This production contains offensive language, sexual situations, and musical theater. It should not be viewed by children.
