People call my behavior extreme, though I'm just acting in service of others. To be more precise, I'm acting in love for others. When people suggest what I'm doing is too hard, I sometimes remark how during America's Civil Rights era, some people went to jail for different people's freedom.Nobody looks forward to going to jail, yet people did. Their actions make mine look easy and fun. Still, I suggest, I bet they consider those actions of going to jail or even being attacked by dogs or beaten some of the best events of their lives. I doubt they regret it. I wanted to confirm my beliefs.I didn't go out of my way, but I looked out for people who had marched, protested, and gone to jail then. Then, a few months ago, I saw Robert Fullilove speak on a panel on leadership for Columbia's alumni community. He stole the show. That is, he was entertaining, engaging, fascinating, and informative. He spoke about many things: education, public health, prisons, and, catching my ear most, his involvement in the Civil Rights era.I brought him to the podcast as soon as I could, meeting him in his office. We talk about all the topics he did and more: education, public health, prisons, his involvement in the Civil Rights era, and more. In particular, not only does he not regret going to jail for other people's freedom, he considers that experience essential for him teaching public health today. Hosted on Acast. How often have you done something and thought, gosh, I'll never make that mistake again? Then weeks, months, and years pass, and come to find out you've unconsciously been repeating old behaviors your entire life. The truth is, we rely on experience to be the best teacher when in reality, the only teacher is EVALUATED experience. Reflection turns experience into insight! When is the last time you found a quiet place to journal and reflect on your day? This could occur after some big event, a fight with your spouse or even regarding questions you have for some higher power. The answer is probably, Shauna, I don't have time. Today I hope you carve out time to listen closely on how reflection can change your life and how to believe that things are happening for you by seeing the rough patches in life as guidance rather than punishment.References: John Maxwell

Overcoming Mistakes in Tech Leadership: Steve Pereira's Journey with Flow Engineering

My guest for Episode #280 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Steve Pereira. He has spent over two decades improving the flow of work across organizations. He's worked through tech support, IT management, platform and infrastructure engineering, product management, and as a founding CTO for enterprise SaaS. Episode page with video, transcript, and more He serves as CEO of Visible Consulting, as COO to the Value Stream Management Consortium, Chair of the OASIS VSM Interoperability technical committee, and co-founder of the Flow Collective to bring flow-focused professionals together. Since 2017, he has been developing and facilitating Flow Engineering. He is the co-author of Flow Engineering: From Value Stream Mapping to Effective Action - his co-author, Andrew Davis, was a guest here recently. Steve and Andrew also joined me for an episode of "Lean Blog Interviews." In this episode, Steve shares his journey in improving workflows and the lessons learned from his favorite mistake. Steve recounts how, in a previous role as a developer, he assumed that his own needs mirrored those of other developers, leading him to spend significant time creating a solution without gathering proper feedback. This isolated approach resulted in wasted time and an ineffective outcome. Through this mistake, Steve realized the importance of customer validation and iterative development, key principles he now applies in his work. We also explored the concept of "failure debt," the role of psychological safety in fostering learning from mistakes, and how flow engineering can transform collaborative workflows. Questions and Topics: What would you say is your favorite mistake? How did things play out with that mistake in your career? How many other developers were you working with on this task? When did you realize the project wasn't working, and how did you adjust? How did you eventually start to learn from these mistakes? When did these lessons become more clear to you in your career? Can you elaborate on how sharing mistakes publicly helped lessen the sting over time? How would you define 'flow engineering' for someone outside of software development? How do you think mistakes, bugs, or defects affect flow? Do speed and quality go hand in hand? What are your thoughts on how leaders can foster psychological safety and a learning culture where mistakes are embraced? What is 'failure debt' and how can organizations address it? Did the writing process for Flow Engineering reflect some of these lessons on customer feedback and iteration? Key Topics: Steve's favorite mistake of assuming his own needs were the same as other developers, leading to wasted time. Importance of customer feedback and validation in technical projects. The Abilene Paradox and how it relates to satisfying multiple stakeholders poorly. Learning from mistakes over time, especially in leadership roles like CTO. The impact of public accountability in lessening the sting of failure. Definition and application of flow engineering to improve collaborative workflows. The relationship between mistakes and flow, and how speed and quality work together. The role of psychological safety in creating a learning organization. Concept of failure debt and how unaddressed failures can accumulate, leading to bigger issues. How Flow Engineering was written iteratively, applying lessons learned from Steve's career.

Learn how to get beyond the sticking points, where failure and quitting too often arise but opportunity and long-term success await those who intelligently persevere. Minimum Effective Action: Where is the Progress? PRs have stopped, you're not feeling as good as you had been, you'll not looking forward to your time in the gym like you had been. Sometimes it takes longer to realize than you would think, but suddenly you realize things are not going as you would like them to go (and as they had been before). What do you do? Because recovery is the limiting factor, it is helpful to think through different areas of your life that contribute to recovery and where you might be falling short or missing the mark: sleep (quality & quantity) eating (quality, quantity, consistency) alcohol protein routine (do you have one right now?) stress You will likely identify an area or multiple where you are not doing as well as you can. For example, maybe you've fallen out of your normal routine during the summer, partly by drinking more. The drinking has reduced your sleep quality and quantity and also your protein and fiber. Tightening things up, reducing alcohol, and reestablishing your routine can help. Minimum Effective Action: Consistency & Path of Least Resistance Identifying the path forward when you want to make changes can be hard. Really, the simple, hard, effective way is the way forward. Focus on one or two things, and do them consistently. The change needs to be something you can see yourself doing indefinitely. IT needs to become a habit, so that when you do not have discipline OR motivation, it is the easy thing to do. For example, for Andrew and Niki they feel bad when they do not work or they eat bad food. It has become easy for them to eat healthier and train because otherwise they very quickly identify they feel bad and see the negative consequences. Sometimes, we know in our hearts that the life we are living isn't serving us but we don't take the actions we need to change it. Maybe we are too scared. Maybe we are too set in our ways. Whatever the reason is for you, I am here to tell you that there are people out there who need what you have to offer. Not only do they want your product or service, but they will also gladly pay you for it. If you are stuck or just can't get out of your own way then this is the episode for you. I have been there and I know that you have it in you to create the life you've been dreaming of. The key is massive action. Gordon looks at how we acquire new knowledge and what we do with it. You can have a retained level of knowledge but you can really help yourself by noting down new learning and then periodically reviewing it. Ultimately the question you need to ask yourself is whether you have taken action on your newly acquired knowledge to make positive changes in your life because you need to not only consume knowledge but act on it to live the life you love   KEY TAKEAWAYS When you are learning, noting it down can be useful as you can periodically review your notes. If you learn something that's useful you need to take action on it. You can consume knowledge but not do anything useful with it. Fundamentally it's about whether you take action on the knowledge to make positive changes for yourself. If you learn something that you think will be useful in the future, having somewhere to note it down for future review is a useful way of keeping that knowledge. What good was it acquiring the knowledge if you don't use it and take action in your life? The important step is implementing new knowledge it needs to speak itself back out to the world in the actions you complete. By consuming knowledge and then acting on it you will be living the life you love.   BEST MOMENTS ‘How often do you consume knowledge but not act on it?' ‘It's carrying through and delivering on the knowledge you have learnt' ‘You need to get the knowledge into your soul and be able to live by it'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Life, Living It and Loving It podcast   ABOUT THE HOST   Welcome to the life, living it and loving it podcast with Extreme Execution Coach Gordon Done.  We don't know about you, but we're fed up of burning ourselves out and living in a state of survival. Today we are talking about the 4th effective action of successful business professionals, which is the fact that Successful entrepreneurs spend money to make money! Successful business owners know that in almost every profitable situation, you need to spend some money to earn more. They don't think twice about paying for the billboard ad or hiring an assistant to place cold calls, because they understand the results that money will bring. Businesses need ongoing investments to expand. One of the best pieces of advice I can offer you is to remember that you are a business, even if you're a one-person show – at least for now. Keep your personal and business separate by having clear boundaries for each. Establish the days and times you will be working - and only focus on actions that drive your success. On the flip side, establish days and times when you have the time to relax and enjoy your personal time. Don't invite your friends to hang out in your office; it will only be a distraction and lead to immense procrastination. And don't talk business at the dinner table with family. Give yourself the space to enjoy each of your respective lives. Last but not least, keep in mind that your personal actions affect your professional reality. Think about your actions, professionally and personally, before you take the next step to ensure your taking effective actions that are driving your success. Over the last 4 days we have talked about 4 effective actions of successful business professionals. Which ones will you implement going forward, so you can be even more successful? Do You believe that You are meant for better things in life? Do You believe that You are worth it? Do You believe that You should be loved in life? Do You believe that You should be respected? Do You believe that You should be healthy? Ask Yourself those questions.  Let's take a closer examination. Are Your beliefs aligned, with what You want in life or not? Because You may say You want "A" but Your belief system tells You "B." Now the most important thing when it comes to Your belief system, is do You believe in Yourself? Think about that. It involves centering ourselves in the here-and-now, and recognizing that all "knowing" is ultimately an abstraction and not reality itself. As long as we don't simply attach to not-knowing instead of knowing, the practice can actually help us be more responsible, responsive, compassionate, and effective.
