Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

276 Finding Your Niche   Living in an age that is so polarized it is more important than ever to care for the communities we are a part of. Like the squirrel that stores a nut that sprouts into a sapling, it's up to us and our agency to make a change not just for our community but for ourselves as well, because even a small change is still a change and all niches in our environment need to be filled.  In this episode Sarah Elkins and Hauson Le discuss how the division within our communities can be changed through our actions and by maintaining a hopeful impact, despite how frightening and anxiety-inducing challenging such adversity can be.   Highlights Doing what you want even if you face adversity. Trying something new and unknown can sometimes lead to the best paths. Just focus on being happy and on what matters to you.   Quotes “My mom raised me always saying “Just focus on being happy, it's not about the money. Just be happy,  that is all I want for you, I'm proud of you if you're happy.” and you know you can get into a bunch of psychology and that, but I just focused on fulfillment. That was the first thing I did. For me a career is all about fulfillment, and how do I be fulfillment throughout this journey.” “We need to be able to imagine alternative outcomes and futures that can happen even when everything looks dark, even when everything looks bleak.”    Dear Listeners it is now your turn, What are your predictions for the future now? Are they positive? Is there something you need to change so that they become positive? And what are the two steps you can take tomorrow to change it so that your prediction shifts?  And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Hauson Community empowerment through expanded agency is the thread that guides and connects Hauson's experiences. He internalized his identity as a servant leader by creating leadership development opportunities for California State University Fullerton's Leadership Scholar Program. His passion for service led him to AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community serving nonprofits that help community leaders align their cultural values, identity, and leadership.   As a professional futurist trained at the University of Houston's M.S in Foresight Program, Hauson empowers leaders to embrace change by exploring new possibilities that ignite action today. His desire to expand foresight impact to larger communities created pathways to the world of local government as SGR's Strategic Foresight Manager where he conducts foresight research, facilitates workshops, and speaks on emerging issues and insights. Connect with Hauson on his Instagram, LinkedIn, and Email! Be sure to check out his website Futures Literacy! About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Zukünfte, in denen die Gegenwart in einem neuen Licht erscheint. Zum anderen Embodiment, das Zusammenspiel von Körper und Geist.

Our subject today is Futures Literacy…using our images of the future—our anticipation of the future—to inform our present.  Loes Damhof has always had a strong passion for designing and teaching innovative educational practices. She traveled the world, teaching 21st Century Skills for Communication, Media, and Design, and in 2016, she was elected Lecturer of the Year of all higher education in The Netherlands for her teaching. For this she was given the first Comenius Award. She used this award to establish the UNESCO Chair Futures Literacy in Higher Education at Hanze University of Applied Sciences (HUAS) together with her team. In addition to her research and teaching practices on Futures Literacy, she is responsible for implementing this methodology as a key-component in all professional Master programs at Hanze. Loose consults and trains staff of international organizations; she hosts Futures Literacy Labs around the globe that challenge and raise fundamental questions on gender equality, decolonization, migration, climate change, and technology.   Elles Kazemier is an expert in innovative curriculum design and faculty development. Specifically, she's an expert on professional, hybrid, learning environments, on projects that aim to enhance co-creative learning and interdisciplinary problem-solving, and on professional development. In addition to her work on Futures Literacy, she is a coach in one of Hanze's research and knowledge centers.

Erik shares what he has observed, particularly in larger organisations, including challenges like interfacing with the outside world when you are a progressive organisation. This conversation is deep. Existential. Radical. Why? Because Laureline Simon speaks to the root cause of the harm that's impacting on each of us, every community and ecosystem across the breadth of our shared planet. This conversation hits home, in a nurturing, generative way, as Laureline speaks from lived experience striving in global systems and shows meaningful examples of how this harm can be repaired. It's been an honour to cocreate many wonderful conversations on Better World Leaders over the past two years. In that time there's been many a dialogue which has given me cause for reflection, and this conversation with Laureline crests the list of those that have. Her openness to explore deeply personal experiences, the range of her experience working through the United Nations across the globe, and the frankness of her insights speak to the fundamental nature of how we must change if we are truly to become resilient as individuals, societies and as a species once again.Laureline Simon is the Founder Director of One Resilient Earth, a European based Not-for-Profit who partner with numerous global and hyper-local organisations on multi-level, systemic initiatives to enable resilient communities by nurturing shifts in mindset, community connection and ecosystem restoration. This work is as inspirational as it is transformative, and provides a wonderful example to us all of how nurturing conditions for interdependent complexity to thrive is vital for the wellbeing of our beings, and the planetary system that sustains us all.I hope our conversation brings you both contemplation and inspiration. It was a great joy speaking with Laureline and I was both validated and informed by our discussion. We both welcome your thoughts and reflections via the connection links below if you'd like to reach out. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on extracts from the dialogue;Shifting mindsets- It's a big moment when we realise how much we need to unlearn and decentre our worldviews- Is it just industrialisation, or is there a deeper worldview that enables industrial exploitation of the world's resources?- What if we weren't thinking about nature & people as resources?- What if the idea of separation of ourselves from nature, which is a mindset, is the root cause of the crisis?- Climate change is a symptom of the crisis of relationship we have with the world and nature- The ecological crisis is a crisis of relationship- We wouldn't be exploiting people if we didn't consider them to be different from us- We need to build capability to operate on multiple levels at the same time; that's why we work with resilient mindsets, thriving communities and restoring ecosystems- People may not realise that a lot of the decisions which are made in response to climate change are coming from a threat response.- We have one Earth and many worldsActions for impact- You can have global actions that have little impact, and you can have local actions that have real impact- It's more about coalitions or networks and experimenting with ways of being more radical- It's about addressing the root causes of an issue, otherwise everything you do is cosmetic- There's nothing worse than feeling that you're taking positive action, when in actual fact all that you're doing is reinforcing a system that is causing harm- The actions we need to take are much deeper than reducing greenhouse gases, we have to repair our relationships with ecosystems and people who have been harmedSystemic change- I've been into the systems, and the premises are flawed- We are too resource dependant, and are not even nurturing the ecosystems that provide our resources- How can we change in a way which is commensurate with the change that's coming?- We're actually really good at adapting to complex systems when we are deeply connected to them and sensorily aware of their existence- We need to build communities of support as we go through radical shifts- It's about a deeper societal transformation, a cultural transformation- Having a more regenerative approach, building our relationships, developing new relationships with ourselves, to our fears, our pain and discomfort, if we are going to become the people who can deal with the scale of changeNurturing conditions- The conditions we need to nurture depends on the people and the context- If we don't look at the health of ecosystems we're not going to nurture conditions for the systems that sustain us.- We need many different approaches working together, with people nurturing the conditions that are best for them- The conditions we need to nurture depends on the people and the contextFind out more about Laureline and her work here:LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/laureline-s/LinkedIn page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/one-resilient-earthInstagram page: https://www.instagram.com/oneresilientearth/YouTube page : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkxlFnIdd3wdzbjv8ZhUVCAOne Resilient Earth - https://oneresilientearth.org/Our climate circles: The Climate Workers Circle and the Youth Climate Circlehttps://oneresilientearth.org/the-youth-climate-circle/https://oneresilientearth.org/the-climate-workers-circle/The Youth Learning Journey for Climate Resilience and Regeneration (September -October 2022)https://oneresilientearth.org/the-youth-learning-journey-for-climate-resilience-regeneration-2/Our certified course in partnership with the UNESCO chair at Hanze University, titled:Futures Literacy for Climate Resilience and Transformation (27-29 June 2022)https://oneresilientearth.org/futures-literacy-for-climate-resilience-and-transformation/Other local events that we advertise on the website such as our Ecotopia exhibition inBerlin from mid-May to earl-July 2022https://oneresilientearth.org/taking-part-in-ecotopia-in-berlin/For other events: https://oneresilientearth.org/news/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Was bedeutet in dem Kontext Quality of life?   Links und Websites von Stefan Bergheim: https://zgf-fortschritt.de/ https://www.zukuenfte.net/ https://en.unesco.org/futuresliteracy/about Buch: Zukünfte – Offen für Vielfalt   MAGIC BRAIN KICKS

In this episode, Alice talks to Dr Emily Spiers, who is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Futures at Lancaster University; Dr Will Slocombe, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool and specialist in Science Fiction; and Lt Col Matthew Brown, Chief of Future Concepts and Strategy with the RAF (on loan from the US Air Force). All three have been collaborating on a project, led by Matthew, that uses fictional storytelling to help members of the RAF and the wider military community visualise what the future may hold. Two editions of the RAF's Stories from the Future have been published already, with more to come soon. Emily kicks the conversation off by explaining what 'futures literacy' is: a skill or capability that we can all develop to help us imagine and discuss the future and make better decisions in the present. Traditionally, futures thinking has been done by a handful of experts behind closed doors, with a particular focus on science and technology. However, momentum is shifting towards more creative and inclusive approaches, with storytelling proving to be a powerful tool that enables lots of different people to debate possible, plausible, preferable and not-so-preferable futures.  This gets us thinking about science fiction. Will discusses the 'prophetic vision' which science fiction has often been thought to have, but also its more systematic use in futures thinking in more recent years, in particular in defence and security contexts. We talk about the overlaps between 'science fiction', 'speculative fiction' and 'useful fiction'; and Matthew gives us some insights into the RAF Stories from the Future project - how it came about, its focus and aims, and what impact it has been having. As he puts it, the beauty of all the future scenarios sketched in the project is that they are 'just stories', but stories that gets people talking, thinking and projecting. Matthew talks about the rapid pace of change, recent geopolitical shifts, the growing climate crisis, and the urgency of involving more people in futures thinking as the defence and security landscapes shift. Emily discusses her work with children/young adults, and the wellbeing impacts which can result when young people feel that they have some agency in shaping potentially scary futures. We hear about the virtual 'Museum of the Future' which Emily and Will have been working on, under the direction of Jim Maltby (a Principal Scientist at the Defence Science Technology Laboratory); and Emily also discusses the Past Futures Project, which looks at history as a valuable repository of futures not taken. We end by talking about the role and responsibility of futures literacy to visualise aftermath, conflict resolution and peace-building.We hope you enjoy the episode! UNESCO describes 'futures literacy' as "...a universally accessible skill that builds on the innate human capacity to imagine the future, offers a clear, field tested solution to poverty-of-the-imagination." FL is a capability  that allows people to better understand the role of the future in what they see and do. Being futures literate empowers the imagination, enhances our ability to prepare, recover and invent as changes occur. Elisa and Andrew explore how association leaders can apply this pivotal skill in shaping and controlling the direction of their organisations.
