How many times must we be fooled by unscrupulous and event violent leaders until we wake up and get conscious? Persephone and Innana might be good examples of how to obtain the "night vision" of recognizing when we are being mistreated and refusing to put up with it. Chalquist.com
After Gilgamesh turns down the advances of the Goddess Innana, she sends the Bull of Heaven to destroy him. However, the Bull of Heaven is killed during an epic seven day battle. Innana decides to descend to the underworld to talk with her sister, Ereshkigal, the Queen of the Underworld and the widow of the Bull of Heaven. Inanna is stripped of her seven divine powers and presents herself naked and bowed at the feet of her sister. After being killed and hung up on a meat hook, she is brought back to life through a series of synchronistic events. She emerges and escapes the underworld. However, no one escapes the underworld without a replacement. When Inanna finds her lover, Dumuzi, he is not mourning her loss. She allows the demons to take him in her place in the underworld. Dumuzi's twin sister volunteers to take his place half the year, hence a representation of the Fall Equinox in the descent into the shadow. Mandarava has always been a maker. Her way into puppetry came initially through trying to make sense of deep family grief. Mandarava's work is brimful of magic - filtered through fairy tales, her own deep immersion in illustrative art and the realm of stories accompanying long-cherished images, both from childhood and her further adventures as a grown-up. We hear about her exploration of female figures from the Buddhist and other mythic traditions, including the resonances between old mythologies and certain kinds of visualisation meditations that feature imagery representing a rich seam of possibilities for transcendent Buddhist practice. Aryajit, animator extraordinaire, was inspired as a boy by Star Wars' retelling of classic mythology. It was a major influence on his deciding to live out the Buddhist path as “the adventure of my life”; and to help make the tradition new in his own work animating many aspects of that path. His work appears extensively on The Buddhist Centre Online, explaining and evoking in brilliant ways both the nuances of the Dharma and the life of the Buddha as a set of nested myths and stories that still resonate today when re-presented in this way. Watch any of his animations (see the show notes below!) and you can feel his own quietly passionate heart in the work. Prasannavira from The Windhorse Trust was instrumental in helping fund Aryajit's new animated series, ‘The Legend of the Buddha'. We talk about helping shape a Buddhist context to fund creators and innovators. And how bringing up his own children within a broadly Buddhist culture informed by classic stories and images has helped him as a parent. We also hear about Prasannavira's own trove of mythic reference points, including Studio Ghibli's ‘The Tale of the Princess Kaguya'. And about his early days as a Buddhist in London, profoundly affected by modern evocations (inspired by Tibetan tradition) of the great guru Padmasambhava. There's so much to enjoy in these thoughtful exchanges: from the legacy of classic British children's television and theatre to the life of the imagination itself. We explore how stories can help us work with past trauma to figure out a realistic path through life in relation to our ideals. And the connections between new work in animation, illustration, puppetry, drawing and painting and established traditions of folk and classical Buddhist art (from India, China, Japan and elsewhere). Whether it's the value of dramatization, theatre and ritual for evoking the best of Buddhism, or how being “good” at art isn't the point - everything flows in this fun episode about how to never lose touch with the sense of wonder and creativity we have as kids, and need now more than ever. Dear ones,We are back after a short break. I hope you all are faring well. In this episode, we chat about the ongoing vibes of Taurus season, the relationship between Venus and pleasure, avoiding determinism in astrology, and fighting for the life you want. We also discuss the Venus workshop we are holding next weekend.Below, find a description of the workshop and a link to sign up if you'd like to attend! With love,Christina & TheresaVenus Workshop: On PleasureGoddess of Love & Beauty. Queen of Heaven. Patron of the arts and ruler of all things sensual and pleasurable. Venus is known by many names: Isis, Ishtar, Innana, Aphrodite, Astarte, Shukra, the list goes on and on. Of all the planets in the sky, it is Venus—perhaps—we humans mythologize most fervently. We know her as both The Evening and The Morning Star. So brightly does she shine, she's earned the honorific title of Light-Bringer. So profoundly does her absence move the human psyche, that distinct cultures across history have devised secretive cults and profound rituals to plumb the mysteries of her retrograde. And yet, in this age of widespread loneliness, numbingly cheap pleasures, and highly addictive, dopamine-hacking technologies, I sometimes wonder: Where is Venus in all of this?If there were a conceptual canopy under which all matters of Venus might fall, I believe it would be “Pleasure.” To know and to seek pleasure is the path of Venus. For this, she is highly prized and revered amid the planetary pantheon. And yet, so frequently we find ourselves estranged from the Venusian realm and from the deep, innate engagement with pleasure that should be a straight shot within us. We find ourselves asking, at shockingly late stages of life, what do I really like? What brings me delight? We realize we've defaulted to ideas and definitions of pleasure wholly defined by people and by social structures entirely outside of ourselves. When will I have what I want? When people come to astrology, frequently it's to pose a version of this question. But the more essential question—the one we often forget to ask– is much deeper:Will we enjoy what we want? Our culture will eagerly teach us what to desire. Sometimes it's our parents who fill in the blank at an early age. Sometimes it's our community. Occasionally it's media. Many faith traditions exist almost wholly to fill this yearning inside us. But what instruction, if any, do we receive on pleasure? And in the absence of that instruction, we are left with the assumption that our desire alone can guide us; that the feeling, the urge, the passion will cut a blazing path to the deep pleasure and fulfillment we seek. But the path between desire and pleasure is not as clear or direct as we are led to believe, and pleasure itself is not bound to any object or goal or process of striving. Pleasure is a force unto herself, and Venus is the celestial custodian of her secrets. This is the first time Theresa and I will be offering this workshop, and it was born of an intention to make space for the sacred and essential processes of pleasure. Together we'll look at the nature and quality of Venus as a planetary devi from many angles and traditions. We will plumb the depths of information the birth chart can offer about our relationship to Venus and we will use a variety of traditional and intuitive techniques to identify concrete and unconscious obstacles that block our fullest expression and experience of pleasure. The session will open with a guided meditation and space is limited to ensure that the work can be tailored to the group and there is ample space to share, learn, and grow in the safe container of our Venusian deep dive. The workshop will be held live on Zoom on Saturday, May 18th at 10 AM PST. Attendees can register through the signup sheet provided and must provide their birth information in advance. There is a suggested donation of $20 to $30. Zoom link will be provided upon registration!Register for the workshop here: LinkAdditional Links: www.skiesofgrace.com www.innercurrents.com Get full access to Skies and Currents at skiesofgrace.substack.com/subscribe

It is said the 12th and final sign of the Zodiac - Pisces - carries the wisdom of its predecessors, but what's love got to do with it? This mysterious sign is attributed to both Aphrodite and Innana who are some of the greatest goddesses of love and sexuality in human history. We cover stories of dramatic escapes, dramatic returns and … magic fish(?) that span Europe and the fertile crescent, before settling in for a meditation exercise to connect us with the elements of life. This is the final episode of the Moon and You, so leave a review to let us know how you found it!
We enter into the depths of December and are immersed in a maelstrom of commercialized holiday ~cheer~. This time of year can be exceptionally stressful, with its emphasis on the weight of our purchases. Looking back in pre-Christian history, the winter solstice was frequently celebrated as a returning of longer days, a re-birth of the “Sun King,” a celebration of hope in the dark and cold of the year. Join us as we explore the importance of the winter solstice, contemplating its astrological meaning, specific winter festivals like Saturnalia and Yule, and the prevalence of themes of death and resurrection, whether we're talking about the rebirth of the earth, the Sun, or Christ. We strive to call the feminine back into a time of year that tends to focus on the birth of the Christian king, contemplating stories of Ishtar and Innana, to re-enchant what otherwise may feel a chaotic time of year. This episode features a contemplation of a listener's synchronistic experience with a wasp sting, Chiron in astrology, and Achilles in myth. The association between Ishtar and Venus is a fascinating aspect of ancient mythology that transcends Mesopotamian cultures. Ishtar, the goddess of love, fertility, and war in the Mesopotamian pantheon, has often been linked to the planet Venus. This connection is particularly strong in Babylonian and Assyrian traditions. Venus, the second planet from the sun, is the brightest natural object in the night sky, and its appearance as both the morning star and the evening star has intrigued cultures throughout history. In Mesopotamian astronomy and astrology, Venus was identified with various deities, and Ishtar emerged as the primary goddess associated with the planet. Here are some key points regarding the Ishtar-Venus mystery: Symbolic Representation: Ishtar and Venus share symbolic attributes related to love, beauty, and fertility. The radiant appearance of Venus in the sky, especially during the dawn and dusk, aligns with the goddess's associations with vitality and life. Dual Aspects of Venus: Venus, like Ishtar herself, exhibits a dual nature as both the morning and evening star due to its orbit around the sun. This duality is reflected in the multifaceted aspects of Ishtar, who embodies both love and war, creation and destruction. Astronomical Significance: The Babylonians were keen astronomers, and they made observations of celestial bodies, including Venus. The movements of Venus were meticulously recorded, and its appearances were often interpreted in religious and mythological contexts. Cultural Practices and Worship: Ishtar's worship, particularly in Babylon, involved rituals and celebrations aligned with the movements of Venus. The Venus cycle, with its phases of disappearance and reappearance, may have been linked to the goddess's mythological journeys, such as her descent into the underworld. Influence on Later Cultures: The association between Ishtar and Venus has left a lasting impact on subsequent cultures. The Roman goddess Venus, for example, shares similarities with Ishtar in her roles related to love and beauty, and the identification of Venus as the morning and evening star persisted in various mythologies. In conclusion, the Ishtar-Venus mystery is a captivating aspect of ancient beliefs, blending astronomy, mythology, and cultural practices. The symbolic resonance between the goddess and the planet adds depth to the understanding of both celestial observations and the profound impact of mythology on human perception of the cosmos. The intertwining of Ishtar and Venus reflects the intricate ways in which ancient cultures sought to make sense of the natural world and their place within it.

The menstrual cycle is encoded with wisdom that can support us through life's greatest challenges. Learning to read and receive this wisdom is a lifelong process - and in today's conversation with psychotherapist and author, Carly Mountain, we explore what one of our oldest goddess myths can teach us about embodying cyclical wisdom as we face all that life throws our way. Carly has worked in a cycle-inspired way for many years as a women's initiatory guide. She has channelled her learnings into her new book Decent and Rising, which explores the ancient goddess myth of Innana and her descent into the underworld as a framework for how to manage grief, loss, illness and other dark night's of the soul. In today's conversations we look at each part of the myth through the lens of the inner seasons of the menstrual cycle, and how each cycle phase makes us more resilient, strong and wise, including:How the tenderising of the pre-menstruum helps us to contact the deeper, body knowings that live below our day-to-day consciousness. The physical and metaphorical shedding of menstruation - the death part of the death and rebirth - is exactly what makes way for the new shoots - the potential of inner spring. As we rise with the new momentum of inner spring, we rise rooted, deepened by the underworld of the menstruation process. ---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. Decent and Rising: women's stories and the embodiment of the Innana myth is a book for anyone who has ever felt lost, a failure, that they're getting sucked deep into dark places that most people would regard as mad. Written by Carly Mountain, a psychotherapist and women's initiatory guide, who specialises in working with sexuality, relationships and embodiment. The book is published by Womancraft and I just loved it. I first came across this story through Angela Farmer, who you'll remember from this earlier episode https://www.katecodrington.co.uk/angela-farmer-on-life-an-inside-job/ but Carly takes it to a deeper level. Last week I was lucky enough to have a conversation with Carly about this deeply layered myth and how we can use it to navigate and better understand the dark times of our lives. Human beings adorn. Scientists now say that the earliest adornments date back over 160,000 years. Why is adornment so universal? It is easy to see adornment as simply an indication of status, wealth, and identity. But adornment is also more than this. The word 'adorn' and 'ornament' relate directly to the word 'order,' to the pattern of the cosmos. And so to adorn has also been associated with aligning to a greater pattern, a pattern evident in the harmonic structures of nature and expressed in the aesthetics of culture and ritual. So in many traditions, to adorn is to directly enhance and pattern consciousness. To assume the boar-tooth mask or the macaw-feather crown is to bring consciousness into greater unification with the pattern of nature — to both heighten perception and to defend against unwanted forces. So adornment plays a key role in the shamanic navigation of the cosmos. In Tantric traditions, deep, loving, attention is paid to adornments. Hymns are sung to the goddess's adornments. The entire universe itself is seen as the adornment of the primal mother power, and practices of invocation and imaginal architecting deliberately adorn the consciousness of the practitioner. Such meticulous adornment has been foundational in many animist traditions. Yet in a world of decontextualized spirituality, the architecting and adorning of consciousness through ritual patterning is often discarded in favor of spiritualities that put all the emphasis on ridding the mind of constructs rather than deliberately patterning it. Perhaps in a post-modern, post-structuralist world, modern minds need deliberate patterning. Like the Sumerian goddess Innana, we need to adorn... for survival. Featuring music from Sidibe, harpist Andy Aquarius, and Nivedita Gunturi and drawing on the work of Tantric scholar Sthaneswar Timalsina, this episode is a patterned journey through that which shines, shimmers, jingles, defends, and aligns... listen on a good sound system, at a time when you can devote your full attention. Hello, this is Eric LeMay, a host on the New Books Network. Today I interview Sarah Durham Wilson, whose new book Maiden to Mother: Unlocking Our Archetypal Journey into the Mature Feminine (Sounds True, 2022) is a reclamation and celebration of women, women's power, and the possibilities for women's lives outside of limitations imposed by our patriarchal culture. Wilson seeks to unearth a sacred, ancient, and empowering connection to the divine feminine, reviving the stories of such figures as the legendary Sumerian goddess Innana and showing what wisdom these stories hold for women who find themselves under threat by the misogynistic politics and policies currently proliferating around us. And Durham is a live wire, a generous and profound spirit who seeks to connect women with one another and with their birthright—the chance to become whole and radiant selves who can lead the world through this wounded present to a future in which each us and our planet can flourish. Tonight's Episode 71 was quite different. A Conscious Erotic Touch Doula. An Erotic Spoken Word Lyricist. Who else but Innana Rose, who's definitely spiritually in-tuned. My light was flickering almost the entire interview. Call it what you want but something in the spiritual realm was definitely happening. (Moving on) Innana is no stranger to the show. (Listen to Episodes 13 & 25) She leaves our audience mesmerized each time she touches the mic. Tonight she introduced her new book us titled “Sex with the Sun”. This book shares Innana's erotic poetry pieces. She's an expert in fusing eroticism, history, and spirituality together in clever, thought-provoking metaphors. Her book also shares visuals of herself unapologetically free. She brings women empowerment, healing, self love, balance and self expression right to your brain, deep into your spirit. You definitely can't miss this episode! For more info go to www.InnanaRose.com Now Let's listen. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/blazethelion/support

Rowling vs. trans people: this was a tidbit Dad wanted me to read on an episode and I didn't feel like it worked for a quick something-I-learned-type discussion. So Dad and I got into it here. It was very hard to find a breakdown online that actually explains the impact of what J.K. Rowling said. The closest I found was the article “Harry Potter and the Author Who Failed Us” by Aja Romano on Vox. It has lots of links if you want to read Rowling's original tweets, or if you want to read how the “science” she cites is flawed. The Foodie Flamingo picture book is now out! You can order it from your local bookstore. The city of Uruk: Here is the link listener Katie Molski shared with me: https://www.worldhistory.org/uruk/ The link explains more about the people she referenced. Innana, for example, was a goddess of the region. She does appear in the Epic of Gilgamesh, but I believe Katie was more referencing what the link says about her.

Tonight was our Sex theme finale. What better way to end a provocative, interesting, entertaining, fulfilling, avoided, heavily marketed three letter word SEX. Tonight our panel consisted of a mixture of married, divorced, parents, grandparents and some never married. We jumped right into different and similar views on the importance of Sex in a relationship, secrets to staying married, tips on finding a partner, effects of food and alcohol before Sex and just how spiritual or mental Intimacy is. This episode was filled with eye-opening perspectives, semi-friendly debates, Sex education and lots and lots of laughs. I thoroughly enjoyed being the moderator...well most of the time. Enough rambling from me. Let's go!! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/blazethelion/support
Starting on a long road of ancient myth and wobbly research: the Mesopotamian netherworld and the Descent of Innana!
In tonight's episode we finally had the pleasure of talking to Spoken Word Poet, Innana Rose'. We did not hold back her energy and she definitely educated many of us. The audience was so intrigued and engulfed her in their questions about past lives, manifesting, psilocybin tools and even recommended foods to help enhance your alignment during meditation. Of course we had tons of laughs as well as many mind blowing ah-ha moments. We ended with our audience saying "Ase" after such an enlightening session. "Symbol systems cannot be simply rejected, they must be replaced. Where there is no replacement the mind will revert to familiar structures at times of crisis, bafflement, or defeat." --Carol ChristThe corruption of the old forms, of old institutions and ways of thinking, continues to be revealed. The need for a new paradigm, myth, or metaphor that carries new values is clear. This involves working with our mythological inheritance, to reclaim or renew truth in the images and stories that inspired our predecessors, and sort through to find what is of value in the present. This is the first in series of four programs exploring the Sumerian myth of the goddess Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth. What might Inanna offer to our times? Thanks for listening, and keep the mystery in your life alive.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/mythmatterspodcast)

My mission is to illuminate the Sacred Power of Illness, and de-shame and transform conversations around illness. Waking up with chronic illness every day requires a whole lot of grit, vulnerability and tenacity. My work is aimed at creating deep respect in the culture for women's experience, wisdom and journey through illness. What would you like people to know about your daily life? *That I go with my own flow and rhythm - what feels possible one day is not possible the next. That I have found immense comfort and wisdom in the mythology for the Queens of the Underworld ( Persephone in Greek, and Innana in Sumerian). These maps of the human psyche and the descent into the underworld which has different rhythms of time and space - map my own experience of living with chronic illness. I focus on what I can do each day, and allow my emotions to flow where and as required, while still getting things done. What would make living and moving in the world easier for you? *Respect for the deep and tenacious courage that chronic illness brings.Do you have any life hacks? *Heaps - ways to short cut conversations with Human Resources in the office jobs, how to make agreements with my partner rather than expectations about what is 'good for me'. How to have time in the morning to journal my feelings and thoughts before turning on my phone or laptop. How to prioritize my own self-care while managing friendships and family occasions. What kind of support do you get from family or friends? *Mixed. I was 'single' for most of my illness journey. I have only partnered int he last 3 years (diagnosis at 35 - now I am 49). My family connections were not great and they were at a loss at what to 'do' about me. I maintained my own flat and employment (or income protection insurance) while being bed bound twice in the last decade. Friends were available for the 'crisis' but retreated again once acute care was over - and yet I still needed heaps of support. Now my partner is supportive on the days I have vertigo, can't leave the house, and of me changing careers. Family - still not so much.Have you ever had someone, or a medical professional, not believe you have an invisible illness because of your appearance and if so are there any examples that stand out? *I have had medical professionals say "I think we have reached the limits of science's capacity to help you, Michelle. Fortunately, I didn't believe him and changed doctors. My office colleagues definitely thought I was over-reacting because I didn't look sick. My autoimmune condition does not have visible signs. Nor does the vertigo until I lose balance. How has your chronic illness affected your relationships? *I feel over the years - my health conditions have been such a big part of my daily focus that it has at times crowded out the real connection in my friendships. It hurts to always feel so unwell and vulnerable. I met my partner when I was only just able to walk again after 6 months of bed-bound, and he was concerned about dating me - someone with such serious illness. However, we worked through that and so much growth and love has enriched our relationship. Is there anything you are afraid to tell people in your life? *I am afraid to name that I have Autoimmune Hepatitis because of the stigma about hepatitis and that people think I have a contagious virus. When in fact I have an autoimmune condition which inflames my liver. In my experience Autoimmune stands for "we have no fucking idea'...What is your best coping mechanism? *Meditation. Knowing that on the bad days that while I feel deeply distressed, there are other days where I am well and the world looks bright. So trying to keep that in my mind. Mythology and the Queen of the Underworld myths. My expanding work and seeing women start to identify with pride all the skills they do have and stand in the world with clear and consistent boundaries. What are you the most concerned about and the most hopeful for in the future? *Most concerned about - flares and relapses. Most hopeful for - a world that respects and understands the deep strength and wisdom that comes with an 'underworld journey' of chronic illness. Is there anything you *don't* want to talk about? Is there a subject we should avoid during the interview? Are you ok with having the video released on YouTube under our Invisible Not Broken YouTube channel? *All good.Is there anything you want to make sure we talk about during the interview? Like an organization you want to promote or something specific that you deal with.I'd like to talk about the what I believe is the Sacred Power of Illness - that it can actually connect you to your deepest, rawest parts of self and requires you to develop strong healthy boundaries in personal relationships, with colleagues and with your medical practitioners. What makes you energized or enthusiastic? What drains you?Energized - having the freedom to do the work I do. Drains me - the victim stereotypes of women experiencing life-threatening illness. Carole Zickell describes her process to gain perspective on a depressing series of life changes. Using the four levels of the physical, psycho-historic, mythic and spiritual, she says we all resonate with stories that parallel our lives. We can use these stories to lift us to a larger purpose. She describes her parallel with the mythic story of Innana, Goddess Queen of Heaven and Earth, who went into the underworld for her sister. Carol’s love of human capacities and learning as a teacher gives her the depth to tackle this complex subject.
Join me as I read the first several verses of the Mysterium Sancti, the sacred texts of Innana.

Innana & the Hydra, Hades, Demeter and Persephone (you’re always one of these)—how we grow up/something must take us into the underworld to “grow” and want to leave our parents, search for more, become an adult Myths ACCEPT NOT REPRESS RAGE OR ENGAGE Recognizing the beast within Taming the beast, not suppressing the beast Cycle of death and rebirth SHADOW: Possession, envy, jealousy, overbearing, controlling, perfectionist If we cannot see our shadows, get naked with the truth of who we are, we suppress urges and desires they come back with a vengeance The Seventh Gate: as we do the shadow work we get closer and closer to the shadow, we are selves (and accept) more and more of who we are. When I discovered the manipulation through sex (seatbelt) M/F bad buckets Shadow: shows up as worst thing that ever happened to you which holds the gold—your riches—once unlocked your purpose and life plan can be revealed—much secrecy about hiding this aspect of self because of shame etc…when its really the key to transformation Accept the beasts, not suppress Find Dr. Frances Yahia at www.dryahia.com Instagram: @dryahia Youtube: Frances Yahia
Sarah Durham Wilson has had her fair share of moments on the bathroom floor, including one years ago that initiated a full kundalini awakening and her spiritual path into Do it girl. At the time of this interview, Sarah was there again, in the dark. Darkness initiated, amongst other things, by the loss of her beloved fur baby and navigating motherhood alone. Sarah doubted whether she could be on a show called Unbreakable whilst feeling so broken, but this is precisely what I love about this episode. She is in it, feeling it all, stripped back to nothing and opening up to us about the experience - the pain, the teachings and the richness. And even there, deep in it, she is able to trust her own unbreakable spirit. As is always the case in any conversation with Sarah, this interview is laced with mythology, mysticism and imagery that brings her words to life and transports us to worlds and possibilities beyond our own. Sarah also shares with us: + How being in the dark does not mean being in agony + The journey of Innana and why stripping back to nothing can be so full of richness + The hard learned lesson that nobody is coming to save us - we have to save ourselves + The epic journey from maiden to mother to crone and where she is at right now + Where she goes to get her guidance in moments of fear - think mystical and magical! + Why she is ready for battle and suited up & how activism is no longer a choice
One of the most important skills we can develop is the art of going down; of slipping into the darkness or feeling our way into the underworld. It’s a life-changing psychological/spiritual journey that we all make at least once, and it’s part of the annual round of existence. We need good stories to help and guide us, and the Sumerian myth of the descent of the goddess Inanna is one of the best.In part 1 (this program) I introduce you to the goddess Inanna and provide some of her back story.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/mythmatterspodcast)
