It's Lance Roberts' 60th birthday, and the birthday faery made an early visit to the studio. Markets will be boosted today by news of an agreement between the US and China over tariffs. Is the recent market rebound a sign of recovery—or just a classic bear market trap? Lance Roberts breaks down what defines a bear market rally, why investors often get whipsawed by false hope, and how to position your portfolio amid short-term optimism and long-term uncertainty. With earnings season in full swing and rate cuts still in question, we'll explore whether this bounce has legs or is setting up for another leg lower. Lance is looking for a classic truck and has his eye on a '71 International Scout; interestingly, commentary on valuations, and the prices people are willing to pay. A history lesson on market corrections, recessions, and bottoms (with charts); why it's important to not ignore bear market signs. Land Cruiser is one of Toyota's – and, arguably, the world's – most haloed marques. In this episode, Jason and Derek discuss its origins and history from its jeep origins, to its enormous family tree, all the way up to the brand new 250-series models, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus GX550. Jason and the Hagerty crew traveled to the rugged, mountainous outskirts of Salt Lake City (and the nearby Land Cruiser Heritage Museum) to film an ICONS episode on the illustrious off-roading Toyota. And in this episode, the carmudgeons dive into the origins of the Japanese jeep and its Attila-grade family tree of subsequent series: the 20-series Land Cruiser and then the, 40, 55, 60, 70, 80, 100, 200, 250, and 300, just to name a few!  The FJs, BJs, the Iron Pig, heavy duties, station wagons, Prados, the Lexus-badged models like the LX600 and GX550 (Motor 1's SUV of the year!). We'll even cover the Land Cruiser's competition along the way: the Jeep Wrangler, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Wagoneer; the Land Rover Defender, Range Rover, Velar, Discovery and Evoque; even the Ford Bronco and International Scout.  In addition to the WWII Willys Jeep 4x4, we'll cover the origin of the “J” in BJ and FJ – an abbreviation for jeep, which itself many believe is a pseudo-acronym for GP or “general purpose,” but a fact-check says otherwise. Even the Land Cruiser name itself was a tweaked version of the Land Rover moniker to make Rando-kurūzā in Japan.   Jason also reviews both of the new 250-series Prado trucks: the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and 2024 Lexus GX550. We'll talk powertrain, styling, cargo and passenger capacity, comfort, handling, NVH, luxury, and more.  Now let's get to it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Agents Angle - The World's Premier Football (Soccer) Agent Show

Whilst many believe football agents should be 'put on trial' for some of the reported and alleged misdemeanors committed by some agents, 'The Agent's Angle' looks at an increasing trend whereby players are signing short-term (trial) representation agreements (contracts) with their agency representatives. Is it a positive step, a sign of mistrust, or a 'weakening of the grip' of some agents who may use longer-term representation agreements to solely benefit themselves and 'fall short' in the service level they provide? Our guest on 'The Agent's Angle' this week is Ged Searson, who as well as having experience as a Premier League scout and working across the breadth of the English football spectrum, has also worked as an international scout and advisor to National Teams and Football Associations around the world. With Ged's experience, knowledge, and expert opinion, 'The Agent's Angle' explores the close association and relationship between football scouts and football agents. Looking at not only how these relationships can be productive, but also where and why they may fail due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of the roles and responsibilities performed by one another. In addition, discussing where the two industries overlap and 'the lines become blurred' in terms of the regulations, leaving people at risk of not just agents and scouts breaching football regulations, but also clubs and players (as clients and employers). 'The Agent's Angle' also takes a look at how one Premier League football star 'reportedly' used statistical data in a contract renegotiation with his club in the absence of an agent, and whether all is as has been reported. Are statistics and data a threat to the football agent profession, or are such resources along with scouting reports, a tool to be utilised by professional agents in ensuring they optimise the representation services they give to clients, whether they be players, clubs, or coaches/managers.? ------- Show Running Order : (01:24) - Agents on Trial and The Transfer of Rasmus Højlund to Manchester United (04:30) - Football Agent and Player Disputes - When Things Go Wrong With Representation (06:07) - Agent and Player Representation is Often More Complicated Than it Seems (07:24) - A Shrewd Move by a Footballer & Clarity for All Involved (09:55) - Guest Interview: Ged Searson - Former Premier League Scout, International Scout & Scout Educator (11:32) - Starting Out as a Football Scout (13:52) - The Relationship Between Scouts and Football Agents (17:45) - Are The Lines Too 'Blurred' Between Agents & Scouts in Terms of Knowledge & Regulation? The 2023 Volkswagen Golf R offers a wealth of good stuff: 315 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG transmission, adaptive-damping suspension, a giant display screen, and impressive driver assistance technology. With a starting MSRP of $44,740, it is an amazing performance bargain. But at the same time, one of our testers asks the question, “Is it too smart for its own good?” While there is no doubt that the Golf R delivers more than enough performance per dollar spent, the interface between the car and its driver might blunt some of its goodness. Depending upon your point of view, the car's systems could require the driver to make too many choices. And those choices must be made through a touchscreen display that isn't all that easy to use, especially at speed. Guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo, author of How To Buy an Affordable Electric Car, and Host Jack Nerad will explore that in this episode. We'll also explore the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage compact utility. Jack Nerad and his wife had the opportunity to test all aspects of the Sportage HEV (hybrid) on a recent tour of Central and Southern California that took them from the SouthBay of Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo on the Central Coast and then to the desert east of Palm Springs. It was a revealing drive, and Nerad tells all about it in this show. In the news this week, an all-new, upcoming version of one of the seminal SUVs has just been revealed. The International Scout has achieved legendary acclaim (and it is also the vehicle driven by the hero in Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark.) Now Volkswagen has purchased the rights to the Scout name, and it will begin selling off-road-ready battery-electric SUVs under that brand starting in 2026. We'll tell you what we think about the whole thing coming up. And despite rosy predictions, this year has been an extremely tough one for electric vehicle start-up manufacturers. Rivian, Lucid, Lordstown, and Canoo are among the EV makers suffering big losses as they try to reach profitability. We'll give you the gory details a little later in the show.

Who is the father of the Bronco?More than any other product, cars reflect the state of the world at the time they’re created. Think about it. You can look at a car from the 1950’s, with its giant fins and oversized engine, and know a lot about that time in history. Likewise, a fuel efficient, aerodynamic compact car will convey information about the 1980’s. So, what does the Bronco tell us about 1966, the year it was officially released? We go back to 1963 the year of the first sketch and ask the question, “What problem was the Bronco built to solve?” Why did WW2 veterans clamor for the first run of Broncos? The Bronco was created to be a truck you can take off-roading in the morning and drive to the opera in at night. It was a hybrid of rugged freedom, and practical quality. But getting it from a design sketch book to a dealership lot, took sacrifice and bravery. But who gets the gold star? Who was the person that gave the go ahead to actually start building Broncos? For more information on the Bronco's early years, check out broncopodcast.ford.com
