What are the best personal finance apps and top investing tools for 2022 and 2023? We often mention different personal finance apps that we've found helpful when it comes to our personal finances on The Australian Finance Podcast, so in this episode we're bringing them all together for you in one spot. From record-keeping, budgeting, banking, investing and making money, there's an app out there for most things nowadays, today we're sharing some of our favourites. ⚠️ Just so we're clear, we do not get paid for including any of these companies in today's episode, and are purely mentioning them as they've been helpful to us. But, we do have a long-term flat-fee partnership arrangement with Pearler, who help us bring this show to life. Of course, this is also a non-exhaustive list, so make sure you do your own research and find the best solution for your own unique needs! Kate's top 3 personal finance apps Sharesight - the ultimate in tax reporting for share and ETF portfolios Up Bank and Banking - CommBank - emojis, planning your finances and helping you understand your money habits Raiz - for automatic round-ups, getting started investing and rewards programs Owen Rask's top 3 personal finance apps Pearler - for automation & 'paying the bill' of investing. Xero - awesome for small business ING - scheduled direct debits, BPAY and transfers (e.g. 'one day after my payday, automatically transfer $2,000 for rent') Notion - life, finance and investment admin (Owen uses it for his investment research notes) Note: Pearler is a long-term sponsor of The Australian Finance Podcast but we're not paid to mention it. And Owen assures us it's seriously one of his favourite. Rask doesn't earn any type of referral/affiliate-style income from any partner/sponsor. Honourable mentions AFR - leader for financial news (student rates are on offer!) CommSec - the app is good for news alerts TIKR - company research, annual reports and data on every stock/company Your local library apps -- save some money & suppor the library! Money can buy happiness, but you need to spend it right. This episode is all about small ways you can change your spending behaviour to maximise your happiness. Here's the premise of the research report today's episode is based on, which draws on 100's of other research papers and studies: (1) buy more experiences and fewer material goods; (2) use their money to benefit others rather than themselves; (3) buy many small pleasures rather than fewer large ones; (4) eschew extended warranties and other forms of overpriced insurance; (5) delay consumption; (6) consider how peripheral features of their purchases may affect their day-to-day lives; (7) beware of comparison shopping; and (8) pay close attention to the happiness of others. Kate & Owen dive into some of the interesting aspects from each of these ideas and share some examples of how you could incorporate these in your own life. Because there's no point saving and investing and getting to the end of your life, without really living on your own terms. That's what we're aiming for folks, not financial freedom for the sake of it, but to create a life where we get to choose where we spend our time and money. This episode is based on the research paper: If Money Doesn't Make You Happy Then You Probably Aren't Spending It Right by Elizabeth W. Dunn University of British Columbia, Daniel T. Gilbert Harvard University, and Timothy D. Wilson University of Virginia. Ready-made ETF portfolios? Rask ETFs has you covered (use code ‘AFP' for $50 off your lifetime membership). Once a company goes public, all ownership of the company will be represented by stock. What is a penny stock? Companies that have stocks that trade at $5.00 per share and below. What is the stock market? The stock market is a place where you can go to buy and sell stock. What are the DOW and the S&P 500 and what is the difference between the two? The DOW Jones is an index that tracks the health of the 30 largest public companies. The S&P 500 is also an index, but it tracks the health of the largest 500 public companies. They are only indexes. You cannot buy or sell stock with the DOW or the S&P 500. You can buy and sell stock using stocking exchanges. The two biggest exchanges are the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq. What is the difference between the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange? There isn't much functional difference between the two. They are both stock exchanges but tech companies traditionally are listed on the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange lists all other companies. Is bitcoin a stock? Bitcoin is not a stock; it is a form of currency or payment. If bitcoin is not a stock, how can you invest in bitcoin? The price/value of bitcoin fluctuates and because it goes up and down, people will exchange dollars into bitcoin with the hope that the value of bitcoin will increase to more than what you paid for it. How do you pick a good stock? Step 1 Know the History : Look at how well (i.e. has increased in value 7-10%) a company has performed within the last 6-12 months. You don't want to invest in a company that hasn't been performing well over a long period of time (6-12months) Step 2 Do Your Research: Do some research on the company to determine how it makes money, how much money it's making and whether the company's money is growing. You can look at the public report the company provides on its website or check out the news section of a finance app or website to find information on a company. Some good finance websites to check out are CNBC or Yahoo Finance. Step 3 Make a Decision: If the company has a solid performance history and your research shows that the company will likely continue to perform well, consider purchasing it. If the company hasn't been performing well and/or your research suggests that it likely will continue to perform poorly, continue passing on that stock.

Kevin Matthews II started paying attention to finance way back in 6th grade - because his parents said they wouldn’t buy him any more video games, he’d have to buy them himself.Kevin’s parents telling him no propelled him into a lifelong planner - saving up for purchases rather than buying and figuring out how to pay it off later. By Jonathan Liss After Victor Haghani and I did a bit of a take-down on Smart Beta back in early September, I thought it only fair to take a step back and properly articulate the case for utilizing factor investing strategies within well diversified portfolios. And who better to lead this endeavor than the Head of iShares Factor ETF Strategy for BlackRock’s U.S. Wealth Advisory iShares business, Bob Hum. In his role, Bob focuses on supporting iShares clients, generating content on Factors and how clients can implement them within their portfolios. Bob has a unique way of explaining some of the more complex concepts underlying factor investing in simple, straightforward terms, without dumbing things down at all. The result is a far-reaching conversation that recognizes some of the limits of factor investing without throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Because warts and all, there's certainly a lot of benefits to be conferred by utilizing smart beta strategies within a low cost, tax efficient ETF wrapper. I hope you find this conversation as enlightening as I did. Interview with Mike Alkin of Sachem Cove Partners. Uranium investors are a very passionate crowd but sometimes focus too much on outcomes and not fundamentals. The Uranium price needs to go to $70. Can Uranium go higher? Sure. Does it need to? No.Something here for new investors to uranium as Mike explains the back story to Uranium. But also for uranium investors who have been in this story for the last two years, Mike explains why and where the fundamentals have got better. If you hold uranium stocks this is a very comforting conversation. We also discuss whether Energy Fuels and UR Energy should have submitted the Section 232 Petition. Would 'price discovery' have occurred? Where would the uranium market be now without it? He tells us about his discussions with the US Department of Commerce. We ask him where he sits on the issue of subsidies for US nuclear reactors. Will there be relief? What is going to happen with the Presidential 90 Day Working Group? Are the utilities conflicted and are there too many issues to resolve in such a short space of time?Investment hacks - You need to buy a 'Bullshit-ometer'. Desperate companies need to survive. They play the pound in the ground game. And that sometimes make the numbers change. How important is the jurisdiction? And you have to ask how this uranium cycle plays out. How important is the US? The highest profits in real estate are earned by investors who are willing and able to find diamonds in the rough and turn them into livable homes. The problem is that banks do not recognize the potential these properties possess. They will not lend on anything other than move-in-ready homes.Secured Investment Corp has created two private equity funds to fill the void left by uncooperative traditional funding sources. Investors have the potential to earn double-digit returns based on past performance. They started out by connecting real estate investors who needed non-traditional funding with passive investors who were ready to earn higher returns on their investments.THE RESULT: Passive investors get higher returns and real estate investors get quick, competitive loans to use to purchase and rehab those properties that traditional lenders will not touch.Secured Investment Corp Director of Funding and Impact Investments Podcast host Heather Dreves dropped by the booth to explain how the benefits outweigh the risks.COGOCAST PODCAST SEASON #1, EPISODE #6: MINUTE MARKERS2:05 – Heather Dreves background: “Fell into private money and real estate investing.” 3:51 – Notes, Trust Deeds, and deploying capital.7:46 – An unexpected guest: Erik Bergman crashes the podcast.8:42 – Real Estate Investing.
