Jovanni and Shiloh are joined by Levi and Rogue to discuss their roles at campus protests in Michigan and the larger student-led protests across the US in the now 268-day-long siege on Gaza. The discussion covers the parallels of student-led protests reminiscent of the Vietnam War era, their demands for divestment from Israeli apartheid, increased Jewish participation in the anti-Zionist struggle, and the responses from university administrations. Levi is a student at the University of Michigan, an Air Force veteran, and a Quaker. Levi is involved with the Divestment Coalition at the university, the TAHRIR Coalition, Levy was a participant at the U.M. encampment from April until the 21st of May.My name is Rogue, I'm a political artist and activist in the city they call Detroit. I'm affiliated with an Anarchist Artist Collective based in Detroit that is focused on queer liberation. I was a participant in the Wayne State University encampment as an autonomous person. On May 30th the University Police launched a raid against the encampment at 5 am. I was off-site at the time and returned to a small protest forming on Anthony Wayne Drive, we witnessed cops hiding badges and numbers, ripping the hijabs off several women when they violently attacked a group of protestors.Main website: https://www.fortressonahill.comLet me guess. "Are you planning to get married in the next two years?" was the question that a hiring manager asked Maricella Herrera on a job interview in finance in 2012. That moment would change her professional journey forever, rerouting her from her finance path to empowering a women+ community. Today, as CEO of the Ellevate Network, with over 200,000 women+ members globally, she is helping to create a culture of equity and inclusion in business. As someone who has been with her company for over ten years and was promoted from within to CEO, Maricella is exploring the challenges and exciting opportunities to step up from her previous organizational role as COO to one of strategy and vision. In this episode, we discuss Maricella's journey from war-torn El Salvador and her upbringing of resilience. We discuss how her side hustle of helping Janet Hanson, founder of the former 85 Broads, became Ellevate and how Maricella joined her efforts once she withdrew her application. Maricella recalls that was the tipping point, not just a decision based on one interview. She wanted to stay in New York, and she wanted to change the world. As an outspoken Latina who readily shares her voice, Maricella expresses the importance of finding your allies and how you will be louder if you have people around you who can support you, even if you can't be loud yourself. We compare the difference between being a "generalist" versus niching down in your skills and how to think bigger, especially when you've been promoted within the same company. Maricella dispels the myth that only hard work gets you to the next level and that talking about your accomplishments and ensuring people know your value is the answer to getting ahead.

Ross Caputi and Scott Spaulding join us to discuss The Sacking of Fallujah, both the event and the book which Ross co-wrote.  Fallujah is seen by the American empire as a great victory over the burgeoning Sunni insurgency during the early years of Operation Iraqi Freedom, but for the people of Fallujah and their descendants, it is nothing less than the entire destruction and poisoning of their people and land.  Birth defects are rampant among the population, spurred by the use of heavy munitions like white phosphorus, depleted uranium, and thermobariacs, which have destroyed the environment for generations. Ross' book, The Sacking of Fallujah: A People's History (Culture and Politics in the Cold War and Beyond), is a great primer on the subject, as well as a detailed microcosm of the war in Iraq and its tactics.  I consider it a must-buy. Road from Ar Ramadi: The Private Rebellion of Sergeant Camilo Mejia Camilo Mejia was born in Nicaragua but moved to the US as an adolescent. Shortly after graduating from high school, after only two college semesters, he joined the U.S. Military and was eventually deployed to Iraq in 2003. After five months in active combat, including posts in Baghdad, al Haditha, al Assad, and al Ramadi  he was sent home on leave, where he recognized and publicly condemned the Iraq war as criminal and immoral. For anyone who follows this podcast, it's never a surprise when you hear the words “I don't know.”  Not due to a gap in knowledge of any kind or the question being one of an odd variety, but because it simply lives behind this giant wall of silence called the U.S. classification system.  The Korean War has been over since 1953 and yet, we still don't know the full extent of U.S. culpability in using biological warfare against North Korean / Chinese forces.  Censorship is a different matter.  For a country ostensibly on the side of “free speech”, the United States often uses censorship to shore up their narratives among the American people.     Dr. Jeffrey Kaye joins the podcast to discuss his most recent CounterPunch piece, “CIA, MKULTRA and the Cover-up of U.S. Germ Warfare in the Korean War.”   “In this article, CIA mind-control programs are linked to experiments on returning Korean War POWs. Also revealed is the extent to which CIA officials from Projects Bluebird, Artichoke and MKULTRA collaborated with U.S. biological warfare efforts, including the top secret “processing” of high-ranking POWs who confessed to U.S. use of biological weapons.” Jeff Kaye is a highly respected psychologist in San Francisco and an expert on current torture and rendition techniques and developments. He writes on torture and other subjects for Firedoglake, Truthout, and most recently at CounterPunch. Today, Keagan and I will be talking with Lisa Ling, a former intel analyst and whistleblower who worked with drones.  She's the one of the subjects of National Bird, the award winning documentary on former drone unit members that included Daniel Hale (the handsome fella gracing our episode thumbnail today) and several other drone whistleblowers.  Please do take a listen to an episode of Primary Sources Podcast, as Lisa, Keagan, Cian Westmoreland, and host Chip Gibbons discuss drone warfare in depth, along with a breakdown of the horrific drone strike that punctuated the U.S. departure from Afghanistan. Lisa joined the military in 1991, serving as an army medic and nurse before transferring to the Air National Guard (ANG). In the Guard, she became a communications technician, working on various types of electronic equipment including DCGS (Distributed Common Ground System; the U.S. Air Force defines DCGS as its "primary intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance collection, processing, exploitation, analysis and dissemination" system). Besides her overseas deployments and prior years in the U.S. drone program, Lisa served with the 234th intelligence Squadron and 48th Intelligence Squadron at Beale Air Force Base from Oct 2007-Sep 2009. The 48th Intelligence Squadron provides communications and logistics maintenance for the DCGS. She served more than six years on active duty and more than 15 years as both active and inactive National Guard. She decided to speak out against the misuse of drones after traveling to Afghanistan and seeing for herself how what she participated in was not a war on terror, but a war of terror. She has spoken out against armed drones killing with inaccurate data, and the program's immense unchecked power around the world, writing for (and sometimes being featured in) the Los Angeles Times, the Daily Beast, on Cyberwar—Viceland, and ABC Australia. Lisa is one of three protagonists from the U.S. drone program featured in the documentary film National Bird, directed by Sonia Kennebeck. Talia Lugacy, director and co-writer of This Is Not A War Story, drops by the podcast to discuss the film's upcoming release.  A collaborate work between Talia, her cast and crew, and a group of anti-war veterans, the film takes to task many of the conventional and stereotypical tropes that are associated with veteran portrayals in films and television. The film will be screened this upcoming weekend on Sunday, March 28 at 5:00pm, at the Cinequest Film Festival, followed by a Q&A with Talia, executive producer Rosario Dawson, actor Sam Adegoke, and veteran / About Face member Eli Wright. "THIS IS NOT A WAR STORY tracks a ragtag group of combat veterans in New York whose anti-war art, poetry and papermaking keep them together, despite the spectre of their friend’s suicide and the ever-crystalizing fact that healing from war is sometimes an impossible mission." Talia Lugacy co-wrote and directed the feature film "Descent" starring Rosario Dawson, which premiered in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released theatrically by Warner Independent. Despite an NC-17 rating "Descent" was championed by The New York Times as "essential to see, a vividness never seen in an American film." Talia is a full-time Assistant Professor of Screen Studies at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School, in NYC. She is also a member of the Actors Studio Playwrights & Directors Unit, and began studying filmmaking at NYU Tisch at the age of 15. She has directed numerous short films as well as directed environmental PSAs with Frack Action, Water Defense, Mark Ruffalo and Food & Water Watch. We are coming to you live today for a special episode to mark the 50th anniversary of the Winter Soldier hearings.  We have a great line-up of guests to discuss this with us, to include Greg Daddis, Andrew Basevich, Vince Emanuele, and Jovanni Reyes, alongside our usual Fortress crew of myself, Danny, and Keagan.    The Winter Soldier investigation was a three day summit in Detroit, MI, in February 1971, which brought combat veterans who fought in Vietnam to testify to their personal experiences with atrocities they or their comrades committed, both against enemy combatants and civilians. The hearings was preceded by the revelations of the My Lai massacre, which unlike Winter Soldier, received major media attention and forced U.S. officials to defend their policies in Vietnam, causing leaders like General Westmoreland, the senior U.S. commander in Vietnam, to refer to My Lai participants as “a few bad apples”, a comment that many veterans of Vietnam found beyond disingenuous and, alongside other dismissals by those in power, compelled them to speak out.   It was organized by members of Vietnam Veterans Against The War (VVAW), with many of the veterans who participated having never spoken of their experiences publicly prior to their testimony, nor were many of them antiwar activists before the inquiry began.  It was filmed by a documentary crew and then turned into a film, which is available on YouTube, for anyone who wants to watch it. INTRODUCING THE ‘QUICK FIRE’ SEGMENTS: This is where we ask each guest the same kind of questions broken into two sections. First, their thoughts on major areas of the sport of squash. And then two other areas that we learn more about their life. I love this section because I never know what people were going to say. And I've learned so much about the guests and new ways to try and do things.  So we're going to try and do more interviews based on this shorter format, because we're always up for experiments and try new things. We're already full steam ahead on prepping for 2021 and looking to do even more. Thank you for all your support we've been getting and your emails mean the world to me and the rest of the team as always thanks for tuning in, and we hope you enjoy. **********************ProSportLED is also a Sponsor of Squash Radio and we both aligned about the importance of sharing the stories of people involved in our Sport.  We cover a lot of ground on this episode and launch a new addition to our “Quick Fire” segment with a 90-second take on the major areas of the Sport. All this is anchored with Janet’s depth of knowledge and wisdom outside of one’s normal reach.    You can tell Janet is a purebred entrepreneur who learned and mastered the system…. But quickly looked to change the game both for herself and others. But where Janet TRULY sets herself apart from the rest of the field, is with her candidness, authenticity and drive to help others.  All this said… and you might have noticed, I haven’t mentioned ONE on the many lists of her accomplishments through her career.  Because the point is…imagine regardless of what you achieved…. That’s the kind of impression you imparted on others…. We hope you enjoy our conversation… and if nothing else, on the day we recorded this interview…it made both our days!  ***************************************** This episode of Squash Radio sponsored by ProSportLED – the most advanced lighting technology for sports. Ali Soufan is Chairman and CEO of The Soufan Group, and a leading national security and counterterrorism expert.  Previously, as an FBI Supervisory Special Agent, he investigated and supervised complex international terrorism cases, including the East Africa embassy bombings, the attack on the USS Cole, and the events surrounding 9/11. Ali has testified before the U.S. Congress and the British Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee. He’s also contributed to and been profiled and interviewed by 60 Minutes, Frontline, The New Yorker, Newsweek, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, among others - and also appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and the BBC.  Many of our book and film buff listeners have probably seen his work detailed in several nonfiction books, including The Looming Tower, by Lawrence Wright, which was adapted into a 10-part Hulu series in 2018. Christian Sorenson stops by the podcast to discuss his new book "Understanding the War Industry", a detailed look at contracting within the U.S. military industrial complex and how its giant war chest gets funneled to an endless list of contractors, without question to its necessity or what could have been purchased in its place. Everyone from libertarians to mainstream liberals to anarchists utters the words “military-industrial complex,” often as a catchall for murky forces that press the U.S. government into war. But what is this complex? More accurately rendered as the “military-industrial-congressional complex,” it is comprised of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Armed Forces; industry, the corporations that sell goods and services to the Pentagon and allied governments; and Congress, which authorizes funding for the Pentagon to purchase industry’s products. Large corporations—the “industrial” side—steer the triangle. Understanding the War Industry is a critical examination of corporate influence on matters of war. The book throws back the veil on how the corporations comprising the U.S. war industry wield authority and exploit financial structures and legal code. Sorensen demonstrates how corporate aggressors profit through such business sectors of war as information technology, nuclear weaponry, drones, space, and special operations. Sales to foreign governments (“foreign military sales,” or FMS) provide a major source of revenue for U.S. war corporations. Large swaths of U.S. academia function as part of the war industry instead of advancing the public’s understanding of the world or incubating innovation that benefits human progress. Other revelations within Understanding the War Industry include insight into how corporate boardrooms view the troops, overseas bases, and warzones. Understanding the War Industry can be read as a call for peaceful mobilization or as a detailed journey covering the ins and outs of corporate dominance. Drawing upon an impressive body of research, Sorensen demonstrates how industry commands the other two sides of the military-industrial-congressional triangle and how it subverts democracy in the process. Stunning in its depth and analytical perspective, Understanding the War Industry instructs the reader about the state of the nation and offers hope for a future in which “national security” involves caring for the public instead of waging elective global war. The buck does not stop here – the murder of Vanessa Guillen – Ep 75

The murder of Vanessa Guillen has struck a violent, but unsurprising chord among the progressive community, anti-war veterans as a whole, and the many victims of military sexual trauma, as the activist reaction, given the high violent crime rate at Ford Hood, is to demand shutting down the entire Army post (the second biggest one in the continental U.S.) and insisting that the entire chain of command from Vanessa’s first line supervisor to the commanding general, resign in shame at their failing to protect an innocent human being under their command. Here, Danny and I discuss this issue with Pam Campos-Palma, a progresive Latina political strategist whose activism includes, among many topics, fighting for lasting change within the military’s sexual assault / harassment systems, and we’re excited to bring her incredible experience to Fortress On A Hill. Pam Campos-Palma is an impactful political strategist and movement builder focused on peace and security, equity engineering, and movement building at home and across borders. She is an often consulted and trusted adviser to national-level leaders, organizations, think tanks, and campaigns, expertly bridging the gap between grassroots movement and grasstops policy worlds to win lasting change. At the core of all her work is the democratization of foreign/defense/security policy through the leadership development, coalition building, and political organizing of war-affected peoples, namely the vets/military community. She is also engaged in transatlantic work around populism and defeating rising global ethno-nationalism and democratic slide. Pam served in the U.S. Air Force for over a decade as an operations and anti-terrorism intelligence analyst working in Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Iraq and Afghanistan. She began her career in the immigrant rights movement, served as a gubernatorial appointee for the state of Oregon, and as a consultant to international NGO’s and social impact ventures. She is a 2019 Atlantik-Brücke Young Leader, was named a "Top 40 Under 40 Latinos in Foreign Policy" by Huffington Post and a 2018 Champion of Change by the UN. Pam has been featured on NBC, CNN, BBC, and NPR, among others, and holds a Masters of Public Administration from NYU with a focus in International Policy and Management. She is a Defense Council member of the Truman National Security Project, an Advisory Board member of Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS), and was a member of the 2019 Women’s March Steering Committee. Powerful.  That’s how I’d describe today’s episode.  A deep dive into the mind of COL(R) Larry Wilkerson, his career as a U.S. Army officer to include combat in Vietnam, his close professional relationship with Colin Powell, his time at the State Department during the Bush II era, his thoughts on various conflicts to include Iraq and Syria, and his thoughts on the murder of George Floyd amist the COVID-19 era.   Lawrence Wilkerson’s last positions in government were as Secretary of State Colin Powell's Chief of Staff (2002-05), Associate Director of the State Department's Policy Planning staff under the directorship of Ambassador Richard N. Haass, and member of that staff responsible for East Asia and the Pacific, political-military and legislative affairs (2001-02).  Before serving at the State Department, Wilkerson served 31 years in the U.S. Army. During that time, he was a member of the faculty of the U.S. Naval War College (1987 to 1989), Special Assistant to General Powell when he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-93), and Director and Deputy Director of the U.S. Marine Corps War College at Quantico, Virginia (1993-97).  Wilkerson retired from active service in 1997 as a colonel, and began work as an advisor to General Powell. He has also taught national security affairs in the Honors Program at the George Washington University.  He is currently working on a book about the first George W. Bush administration.
