Recently, I was watching the behind-the-scenes documentary of Six Impossible Things. Six Impossible Things was a magic show created by one of the best close-up magicians alive today, Joshua Jay. In the documentary Joshua and his creative team not only reveal how the tricks are done, but they explain everything they did to create the show and make it a success. Near the end of the documentary Joshua shares the three phrases he reads to himself before every show to ensure he is ready. As a performer myself, I know how easy it is not to be fully present to a presentation that you have given hundreds or thousands of times. I liked the idea so much that I asked myself the question, "What do I want to remind myself of before each client call to ensure I am at my best for every client?" After playing with the idea for a number of weeks, I settled on four phrases that I say to myself before every client session. In this week's podcast I share those phrases with you, and how you can use them yourself, whether tapping with a client or on your own. Even if you don't use my phrases, I have a feeling that my thought process will help you to figure out what reminders you need to get the most out of tapping. Support the podcast! On October 15, 2015 during a rehearsal overseas, David Goldrake's double levitation illusion went horribly wrong. After his (now) ex-wife, Abbey, had levitated into the air, David then “floated” up behind her then suddenly he saw the floor rapidly moving toward his face. In this episode and seven years after this accident, David feels a bit more comfortable talking about this life-changing moment, the things that led up to it, and suggestions to illusionists on how to be prepared and take necessary precautions. We recorded this episode while in Atlanta, Georgia and attending the I.B.M. National convention this past summer. With so much other content that has been recorded and some that were broadcast due to their timely nature, our chat is a little late getting out, but the content and stories are timeless. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize As we begin our chat, we talk about “video mapping.” David Goldrake was one of the first illusionists in Las Vegas to make use of “video mapping” which is in common use today. We chat about this before going into the story behind the tragic accident. David is quite frank and open about all the details including what happened, why it happened, the insurance for hospital bills, plus suggestions to others on why it is important to check your gear before a show and even rehearsals. David wanted to set the record straight because Joshua Jay reported Abbey's point of view in his book, “How Magicians Think: Misdirection, Deception, and Why Magic Matters.” The story told in this podcast might be an alternate view of the accident and what followed. Magic. It's just a bunch of hocus pocus…or is it? World-renowned magician Joshua Jay--author of the new book How Magicians Think: Misdirection, Deception, and Why Magic Matters--lays his cards on the table for Eve and Julie as they explore the artistry and mastery of the craft. They discuss what draws people to magic and why some devote their entire lives to it; the difference between surprise and wonder--and how a ham sandwich factors in; and how Joshua continues to find joy in his craft as his “doorway to wonder” closes. Joshua also gives Eve and Julie a peek behind the curtain of his mentorship with the mysterious and nocturnal magic artist Juan Tamariz, whom magic scholars consider the greatest living magician of this century. Joshua Jay is a former world champion in close-up magic and a Guinness record holder for card tricks. He makes frequent appearances on TV shows like Jimmy Fallon and The Late Late Show with James Corden, and he even fooled Penn & Teller on Fool Us. He's performed in lecture halls all over the world and has authored four books on magic in addition to How Magicians Think. #21 Gagenhöhe und Qualität

GG-Magic Performer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2020 25:28

Josh and Andi Gladwin founded the company on the belief that there was a real dearth of high-quality magic on the market.  Josh was criticized when he first began selling difficult, high-quality tricks. The critics suggested Vanishing was giving away too much. But Josh says that giving a newbie a really impressive trick right away will ensure that they are hooked for life. But the company is not based on profit at any cost. Josh says they have pulled innumerable products either because there was a missing credit or because the products were not up to snuff.
