We meet Ekow Eshun, leading curator, writer and broadcaster to discuss his new book The Strangers. In the western imagination, a Black man is always a stranger. Outsider, foreigner, intruder, alien. One who remains associated with their origins irrespective of how far they have travelled from them. One who is not an individual in their own right but the representative of a type. What kind of performance is required for a person to survive this condition? And what happens beneath the mask?In answer, Ekow Eshun conjures the voices of five very different men. Ira Aldridge: nineteenth century actor and playwright. Matthew Henson: polar explorer. Frantz Fanon: psychiatrist and political philosopher. Malcolm X: activist leader. Justin Fashanu: million-pound footballer. Each a trailblazer in his field. Each haunted by a sense of isolation and exile. Each reaching for a better future.Ekow Eshun tells their stories with breathtaking lyricism and empathy, capturing both the hostility and the beauty they experienced in the world. And he locates them within a wider landscape of Black art, culture, history and politics which stretches from Africa to Europe to North America and the Caribbean. As he moves through this landscape, he maps its thematic contours and fault lines, uncovering traces of the monstrous and the fantastic, of exile and escape, of conflict and vulnerability, and of the totemic central figure of the stranger.Described as a ‘cultural polymath', Ekow Eshun has been at the heart of international creative culture for several decades, curating exhibitions, authoring books, presenting documentaries and chairing high-profile lectures. His work stretches the span of identity, style, masculinity, art and culture. Ekow rose to prominence as a trailblazer in British culture. He was the first Black editor of a major magazine in the UK (Arena Magazine in 1997) and continued to break ground as the first Black director of a major arts organisation, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (2005-2010).As Chairman of the commissioning group for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, he leads one of the world's most famous public art projects. In July 2022, Ekow curated In the Black Fantastic at the Hayward Gallery in London a landmark exhibition of visionary Black artists exploring myth, science fiction and Afrofuturism. His most recent exhibition, The Time Is Always Now, is a landmark study of the Black figure and its representation in contemporary art. The show opened at the National Portrait Gallery, London and is travelling to multiple venues in the USA, including The Philadelphia Museum of Art.Eshun's writing has appeared in publications including the New York Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, The Observer, Esquire and Wired. His latest book is a work of creative non fiction called The Strangers, published by Penguin in September 2024.Follow @EkowEshun or www.ekoweshun.co.uk/Buy The Strangers, his new book from Waterstone's. In 1981 Brian Clough paid £1 million pounds to bring Justin Fashanu to Nottingham Forest. It was the climax of a meteoric career, but within months the goals had dried up, he'd been going to gay nightclubs, and Fashanu had also become become a born again Christian. Four decades later Justin Fashanu remains top flight English football's only openly gay player. From his beginnings in care with brother John as Barnardo's boys, via adoption, boxing, football and failed pop star, this is an extraordinary life, beautifully highlighted by his nominator, Ekow Eshun."He was a pioneer - he broke ground. He was a prominent black footballer at a time when to be black and a footballer was fraught territory, when players were barracked from the terraces for no other reason than the colour of their skin." Ekow EshunAlso in studio is Richard Williams of the Guardian, who saw Fashanu play on the way and on the way down. Plus there is moving archive of Fashanu himself, and also from his niece, Amal Fashanu, talking at the time of the release of her documentary, Britain's Gay Footballers. The producer for BBC Studios Audio is Miles Warde

A warning this episode refers to homophobic slurs that some listeners may find upsetting. Zander Murray lives and breathes football. The 31-year-old from Glasgow currently plays for the Scottish League Two club, Bonnyrigg Rose, as a striker. Last year he gained considerable attention, having scored his 100th career goal. However that wasn't the only reason he found himself in the media spotlight. In September 2022, Zander decided to go public about being gay, becoming the first out professional footballer in Scotland since Justin Fashanu. On National Coming Out Day for 2023, Zander shares his story on the ITV Pridecast. Zander opened up about his sexuality only months after 18 year-old Blackpool striker Jake Daniels did the same. Both men are part of just a handful of footballers in the world who are openly gay, and of that very small number, none find themselves in the higher leagues of football's elite. The sport has sadly held onto a legacy of homophobia and discrimination, both on-and-off the pitch, with many in the game still fearful of coming out and the reaction they will get from both the media as well as fans. For Zander though, he could no longer keep his sexuality a secret. Since coming out, and alongside his career as a footballer, he has now taken on an ambassador role, where he's trying to create an environment where LGBTQ+ players can comfortably be themselves and live authentically. He is hoping we will reach a day where a male footballer coming out won't make the news headlines. Zander believes it's about time that the men's game takes inspiration from women's football, where there is far greater inclusivity for LGBTQ+ players. It's only then he believes that football will have caught up with wider society and can become a safe space for any player. Joining Liam McConkey to co-host this episode is Jamie Summers who is a journalist for ITV News in London.

Amal has been an avid campaigner for over a decade fighting against homophobia and racial discrimination in the world of football. Last year she founded The Justin Fashion in memory of her uncle, Justin Fashanu, who was Britain's first million pound black footballer and first (and only) ever openly gay footballer. Sadly instead of this being an opportunity to change the face of football - it lead to Justin feeling rejected by his communities and lead to him taking his life. This episode we discuss the work the Foundation is doing to help fight to create that safe space within the sport as well as supporting footballers with their mental health to feel open to be their true selves. We discuss what we as a society can be doing more and help see these footballers for the humans they are and not as our performing gladiators. During these episodes we will take a look back at examples of mental ill health in football from yesteryear.  In 1990, Justin Fashanu announced to the world that he was a gay man. In 1998, Justin sadly took his own life.  In this episode, we look back at the life of Justin Fashanu, Britain's first and only top level gay footballer. We try to get a better understanding of who Justin really was, and the difficulties he experienced, by speaking to his friend Alan Quick, and Jon Holmes of Sky Sports.  This episode also features Aslie Pitter, one of the founder members of Stonewall FC, the UK's first and most successful gay football team, as we try to get a clear picture on what life was like as a black, gay man in the 1980's and 1990's.  What can we learn from Justin's story? Is homophobia in football still present in 2020?Why haven't there been any other out gay footballers at the top level in Britain? This episode was made to honour the memory of Justin Fashanu, and hopefully continue to improve football's relationship with the gay community.

Hey everybody! Welcome back for another sexy episode of Queer All Year! In today's episode, Cat and McG start out with some silly banter: Today is National Garden Naked Day, which we fully endorse. Unless you don't have a fence around your yard, in which case you should probably wear some clothes. We also discuss Osama Bin Laden's death, which occurred on this day in 2011. For our main story, Cat talks about Justin Fashanu, who was denied the chance for a great football career after he came out. Thank you so much and remember: We Love You!

On Wednesday, Justin Fashanu went into the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame. It's a story that has made headlines around the world - so we thought we'd do something a little bit different and take you inside the Museum for the induction itself. This episode is a bit different to our other ones - with not just one guest but lots of them, all talking about what Justin Fashanu's induction means to them. The edits are a bit rough and ready - but the stories, as always, are powerful and surprising, and we think they'll give you a real flavour of what the event was all about. Wednesday would have been the 59th birthday of Justin Fashanu. The footballer was the first black player to earn a one-million pound transfer fee – and played for twenty-two clubs in a career that spanned two decades. Fashanu was also the first male English professional to come out as gay while playing – and became the victim of constant crowd abuse as a result. Ultimately, Fashanu took his own life – but on Wednesday, he's being posthumously inducted into the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport. His niece Amal will be accepting the honour on his behalf – and joins us for this powerful, poignant episode on her uncle's legacy, as well as her memories of him as a man. There's so much on the agenda – from visibility to inclusivity to mental health – and we think this is an interview that you won't forget any time soon. Justin Fashanu was a star on the rise. Young. Strong. Fast. His goal against Liverpool for little regarded Norwich City was so unexpected, and so spectacular it was named goal of the year. It also catapulted young Justin into another stratosphere and into the world of big-time soccer. His transfer fee of $1-million-pounds was the largest sum ever. However, playing for his new club, Nottingham Forest, at such a young age and with so much expected of him was an incredible pressure cooker. Justin’s off-the-field lifestyle didn’t help, and his clashes with his club manager didn’t help. Kartik Krishnaiyer from World Soccer Talk joins the podcast as we take a look back at the career of a man who played the role of hero for Norwich City, but never reached the heights so many thought to which he would ascend.   Links: Sports' Forgotten Heroes website Sports' Forgotten Heroes Patreon Page Sports' Forgotten Heroes twitter ©2017 Sports' Forgotten Heroes

Khalida Popal, standing up to the Taliban Former Afghanistan women's team captain Khalida Popal grew up in a nation under Taliban rule where women were banned from playing any form of sport. She learned to play silently with friends to avoid detection, played on pitches once used for public executions and suffered physical and verbal abuse. Khalida fled her country, years later, and with her playing career now over she looks back on her life and tells us of her dream to one day return home as head of their FA. Bon soire Napoleon, the life of Raymond Kopa Raymond Kopa died earlier this month at the age of 85. He was the first French player to win the Ballon D'or and finished in the top three on a total of four occasions. He was the first player to boast a commercial interest, (his own sportswear brand), something no player would be without today. He was also one of the founding fathers of the first players union. Nicknamed 'The Little Napoleon', he was part of the Real Madrid side that dominated the 50s, he also played for Stade de Reims in the first ever European Cup final. We hear Kopa's only BBC World Service interview and Reims Sporting Director Alexandre Barbier pays tribute. Alessandro Costacurta interview The former Italy and AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta looks back on his time playing alongside Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi. Arguably the most dominant defence of all time, he says the team 'choked' their opponents into submission and blames Milan's recent problems on the absence of a 'teacher' like Baresi or Maldini. He also claims Milan's owner is 'too old' to take the team back to the top and admits Inter Milan are the more likely of the two teams to challenge for Serie A titles in the near future. A night on the tiles with Kosovo James Montague reports from Kosovo where the national team coach Albert Bunjaki staged a flash mob at a classical music concert to stir up national pride amongst his players. Kosovo are hoping to record their first ever competitive win when they face Iceland this weekend. We also hear from Manchester City and Kosovo player Bersant Celina who recently jumped into the crowd to tear down a 'Kosovo is Serbia' banner at an FC Twente match (he's on loan there). The tragedy of Justin Fashanu Leroy Rosenior played with Justin Fashanu at West Ham, he looks back on their time at the club and examines how close (or far away) football is from convincing gay players they are safe to come out whilst continuing their careers. He also tells us how Fashanu's suicide changed his life.
