Something Shiny: ADHD!
ADHD Origin Story - Do I need medication?

Something Shiny: ADHD!

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2022 31:32

David describes his recent dream ADHD scenario: he was craving sweets (rare, for him) and went to 7-11 and got four different kinds of donuts, then had a bite of each one. He didn't have to decide which one to get, he didn't have to prioritize, he could just eat a bite of each one and then change his mind to cheese fries. Bobby describes similar dynamics, except with candy bars, and how he gets candy for Isabelle to justify what he did. Is it disordered eating or ADHD? Most of the time, Bobby doesn't do this, thinking about how he feels after he does this. David is jealous of Bobby's skill to think ahead to what it'll be like afterwards: response cost - knowing the consequences of your actions. Isabelle shares being on a conference call that had such poor quality that she couldn't concentrate to say what she didn't want to do, and is proud that she didn't shame spiral fully—noticed the shame spiral. ADHD is not a deficit of attention, it's an overabundance (and variability) of attention. The click of the ceiling fan you can't tune out and find yourself yelling to be heard over. Most folx with ADHD are overstimulated by uncomfortable stimulus, but it's different for each person, for some it's sound, or texture of food, etc. But neurotypical folx don't think twice about advocating for themselves (eg. I can't hear the conference call, can we redial? v. It's my fault I didn't hear). It is revealed that this is the first time that David, Isabelle, and Bobby were recording Something Shiny. Long term consequences and threat of a consequence do nothing for folx with ADHD. Bobby gets up to turn off the fridge and David points out that folx with ADHD will feel authorized to advocated for themselves when they have a feeling or sense of mastery or expertise for something. Bobby shares his origin story: being awarded a spokesman ship award when he was little (for talking a lot). He tried a friend's Adderall in college and it was his most productive day, but he was so scared it was a drug and that he shouldn't do it, and was wrapped up in the shame and stigma of it all that he didn't do it again. After being diagnosed about two years ago, he finally tired meds, but not without first watching a documentary on Netflix about the dangers of ADHD meds (see below). He mentioned his five hour energy consumption and how calm he felt to his therapist, and his therapist said “we need to get you some medication.” Bobby and Isabelle see a scary documentary on ADHD meds, so Isabelle was scared of Bobby going on medications, and then he said “I've had my brain be a crowded room my whole life and you're telling me that there's something that can help and now you're telling me I can't have it?” David pauses to say: I don't think people realize what it's like to take medication and then be like—“what? People can read a book? People can just sit down and decide to not eat.” And how most people feel like they're cheating, and it starts to reinforce the notion we are lazy and flawed. The predominant factor that stops people with ADHD is self-esteem issues, thinking “I can't.” ADHD meds help you have a better assessment of how you did, not actually perform better. It increases your stimulation and you don't have to self-stimulate. We don't think about what kids needs, we give them medication three times a day no matter what they do. Why don't we teach kids what they need the medicine for? The medication doesn't make you work. More meds do not equal solving the problem. The medication is going to help you with whatever task you're doing. Have some food, start your task, and then take the meds, and you can trigger the hyperfocus. Documentary on ADHD meds we reference: Take Your Pills (available on Netflix) DAVID'S DEFINITIONResponse Cost: a neurological skill that helps you know the consequences of your actions later on down the roadA note on medications: ADHD medications are very effective and also everyone gets to make their own choices about medications. For those of us folx on ADHD meds, we are often prescribed medication with zero education about how they work. Especially with kids, we don't teach them what they need the medicine for. Medication can be used like a scalpel, where you know when to apply it; on their own, medication will not help you do your task…it will help you do whatever it is you were doing when you take the medication (eg. Playing video games, binge watching Squid Game, etc.). One idea is to take some food, start your task, then take the medication (as prescribed) to trigger hyperfocus. Please note that neither David nor Isabelle are prescribers and are talking about meds from the perspective of professionals who work with folx who have ADHD and also as folx who have ADHD. We will continue to expand upon and explore this topic in future episodes, so stay tuned! For full show notes, lecture slides, and more, check out our website!-----Cover Art by: Sol VázquezTechnical Support by: Bobby Richards—————

Alison’s documentary work has been recognized with awards and box office success, and she also directs nonfiction series and commercials. Her debut feature AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY, about the Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival where it was awarded a US Documentary Special Jury Prize for Spirit of Defiance. It had its international premiere at Berlinale and went on to be shortlisted for an Academy Award, nominated for two Emmys, and earn Alison a DGA Award nomination and an appearance on The Colbert Report among other honors. NEVER SORRY has now been translated into over 26 languages and had major theatrical releases around the world, including on over 200 screens with IFC Films in the United States. It was also one of the highest grossing films of 2012 directed by a woman. Her newest documentary THE BRINK was theatrically released in 2019 by Magnolia Pictures. In it she takes on former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, following him for over a year as he tries to promote his brand of extreme nationalism and unite the far-right anti-immigrant parties of Europe. After its Sundance premiere, Variety called the film "impeccably crafted...an engaging and enraging, disturbing and highly revealing movie." In his Critic's Pick review, A.O Scott wrote "it's a fast-moving, tightly packed, at times unnervingly entertaining documentary.” Alison’s other films include the Netflix Original feature documentary TAKE YOUR PILLS about the role of prescription stimulants in a hyper-competitive, overly medicated America. The Emmy and BAFTA-nominated film was executive produced by Maria Shriver and had its world premiere at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival. She is also the director of THE 100 YEARS SHOW about 103-year-old Cuban-American painter Carmen Herrera, who worked in obscurity for decades until finally receiving recognition late in life. The film was a festival favorite and five-time winner of “Best Documentary Short.” It had a theatrical run at New York’s Film Forum, and screened at the Whitney and other museums before being released worldwide on Netflix.

Jordan (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason (@jpdef) are back to banter every week and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday on The Jordan Harbinger Show! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now, let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Fixated on the past? Not us. Like The Jeffersons, we're movin' on up! That being said, we appreciate you passing the memo along to people who don't yet know about the move. If a friend avoids you to get out of paying back a loan, should you just write it off as an investment in learning who isn't your friend? If you grew up in the US but had to leave because you didn't win the work visa lottery, how do you make do in a place you don't really want to be until you can make it back to the US? Are you Jordan's good friend? How do you go about rebuilding your social circles when your old friends stop calling you back? Is it worth the investment of time to learn additional languages, or is that time better spent leveling up other skills? How do you give up your high-paying but soul-crushing job to pursue dreams of traveling the world and working remotely? How do you start building wealth as opposed to constantly going into debt -- especially when you have a significant other who can't hold down a job? Recommendation of the Week: Take Your Pills Quick shoutouts to Andrei in Russia and Brandl Moniz! Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? Drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com! Connect with Jordan on Twitter at @JordanHarbinger and Instagram at @jordanharbinger, and check out Jason's (@jpdef) other show: Grumpy Old Geeks. EPISODE 027 DREDD, STRAW DOGS, THE JUNGLE BOOK For all you Dave fans out there (both of you) we can only apologise and offer our deepest condolences in his absence. Unfortunately Dave had to attend a funeral and wasn't in the mood to turn on the charm and record a podcast, you'll have to make do with Moid and Russ. Dave will return in a couple of weeks. The show must go on. When Moid and Russ get together they tend to take the opportunity to clear a backlog and deliver as many reviews as they can. So, after a brief chat about Russ' tattoos we have 13 movies to ponder, prod and pick apart. ENJOY. BEEN FLICKED ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ (2017) Both Russ and Moid were big fans of Dan Gilroy's previous film, Nightcrawler, Russ watched this with high expectations. FRANK (2014) As a lover of quirky independent film Moid has had this on the radar for a while. As if to prove it's meta credentials this is as quirky and indy as the subject matter but with Michael Fassbender entombed in a big paper mâché head. It's as weird as loveable as it sounds. GINGER SNAPS (2000) Trying his best not be out-weirded by Frank, Russ watched this werewolf movie that is based on ginger girls turning into werewolves because they started their periods when a full moon was out? Pretty sure that's what Russ said, I wasn't listening. LET ME IN (2010) Quite a rarity in the film world. A remake of a great film that isn't total cash grab abomination. We recommend you also watch the 2008 Swedish original, Let the right one in. Go on, let her in, she won't bite. THE DOGS OF WAR (1980) I think we all agree that we all want to watch this just to experience Christopher Walken doing a full on Christopher Walken. DREDD (2012) Oh the pressure. Moid has Judge Dredd and 2000 AD to thank for his love of comics and Russ considers this one of the best adaptations around. What will Moid think? Does anybody care? STRAW DOGS (1971) The original and gritty cult classic. Nuff said. THE JUNGLE BOOK (2016) Moid still has the original animated film on his List Of Shame but chose to watch this instead. For the second movie in one show we a chance to see the great man Christoper Walken in action. DRUGSTORE COWBOY (1989) Matt Dillon, where are you hiding? Somebody give this guy a job, he's great. Kelly Lynch, Not so much. SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD (2012) Admit it, you want to watch this based on the title and the poster? Steve Carell delivers another of those straight faced performances that somehow make you laugh. It's the end of the world as we know it. TAKE YOUR PILLS (2018) This Netflix documentary really hit a nerve with both Moid and Russ. Russ had to have a lie down, and take some pills. FRACTURE (2007) Moid continues his Gosgasm with this unremarkable looking movie. Everything about it looks middle of the road. Will it defy expectations? I KILL GIANTS (2017) Let's not judge a book by it's cover, but that is an awesome poster. Russ cried like a little girl at this, I think that means he liked it? The Snakeskin Movie Lounge is a fiercely independent podcast. We are commercial free, not part of a network and totally self funded. The only payment we accept is a 5 star rating and review on iTunes, it really helps like minded people find the show. Have you heard our most popular episodes? Episode 008: THE LIST OF SHAME. Lots of everything in this one. We get off topic and start talking about purging and minimalism. Lots of talk about adderall, attention deficit, and the Take Your Pills documentary on Netflix. I watched the documentary, "Take Your Pills," which leads me into a discussion about gateway drugs: prescription pills, and that the biggest pusher of drugs is the FDA.
