Your ICP Suck... Do This Instead! | Ronnell Richards - 1881

The Sales Evangelist

A big problem a lot of sellers have is they don't know who their Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is. But, with the right framework, you'll be able to go after the right buyers every time. My guest, Ronnell Richards, founder of Sayless Academy, will share how to find your ICP and how to reach them the right way.Meet Ronnell RichardsRonnell Richards is a best-selling author, entrepreneur, and sales consultant with over 20 years of experience. He's put his sales and marketing expertise into comprehensive LinkedIn Learning courses and his book, "Shut The Hell Up and Sell." On top of his professional work, he mentors entrepreneurs and supports community initiatives, helping businesses succeed and creating social impact. Why You Gotta Know Your ICPRonnell says a lot of tech companies don't actually have an ICP and just sell to anyone who comes along. But, in today's tough market, knowing your ICP stops you from getting pulled every which way and missing out on big wins. The more specific you are with your outreach and messages aimed at your ICP, the less you get lost in the crowd. What's the Difference Between an ICP and a Strong ICP? Ronnell made 37 questions for his clients to answer about their absolute best customers. This helps them figure out all the things they have in common with those top clients. They usually find their ICP is way more complex than they thought. A strong ICP means you're targeting buyers you know you can crush it with, and avoiding those who aren't a good fit.Seeing Your ICP as a PersonIt's a whole different ballgame when you see your ICP as a real person, not just a target. What's their day-to-day life like? Are they going through a rough patch? I actually just put up a LinkedIn post about this, it's titled "I'm Not Just a Sales Guy."Instead of getting bent out of shape when your ICP doesn't reply to your emails, Ronnell says it's way better to build connections and make sure your outreach lines up with what they need. The secret to building strong relationships with your ICP is having shared values. This is how you get repeat business."Relationships are everything. The reason I can still do business with someone I worked with twenty years ago is because we clicked and built a real relationship." - Ronnell Richards.ResourcesConnect with Ronnell on LinkedInFind more information on his LinkedIn course herePurchase a copy of his book, “Shut The Hell Up and Sell.” Visit Ronnell's website to learn more about him. Summary Jason Walker is described by his colleagues as a "Down to Earth Seller". He describes himself on LinkedIN as The Conscious Seller and an LMS Whisperer. He showed me how he is all these things and more in our conversation. So much of sales is making people feel that they have someone that cares about them and Jason goes even farther with an approach that says - his client's deserve someone that cares about their problems. His approach to sales is framed by his personal life and he translates that into what he does every day. This conversation we chat about how he uses experiences in his personal life to inform his sales approach, how he connects with people that may not always want to open up, and what he does to frame problems in a relatable way. Stay to the end and you'll meet Jason's family through a funny family picture that may or may not involve multiple middle fingers. Down to earth through and through! Key Moments: 03:33 - We're all human and want to be treated the same way. Framing and solving problems in a clear way. (Jason's only job) 8:59 - How Jason's experiences have lead him here and what characteristics have really informed how successful he is in sales. Jason's personal story of how he understands people. 15:12 - A fun line Jason uses to break the ice on calls 17:51 - When people don't connect with Jason what he does. Imagine spending time in college pursuing a Bible degree and later realizing that it wouldn't be helpful in your life. That would be sad. In this episode, I have Travis Chappell joining me on the show. Travis spent time in college pursuing an unaccredited Bible degree which turned out to be useless for him. After college, he got into door-to-door sales and later transitioned to podcasting. Today, Travis will share how he transitioned from a door-to-door sales guy to a podcaster, the course he is offering, and his superpower. Listen in and learn. How Travis Transitioned from Sales to Podcasting After college, Travis decided to venture into sales. It was one thing he knew for sure that would make him money. After five years of door-to-door sales, Travis decided to venture into podcasting. At the moment, Travis runs a successful podcast, he offers podcasting courses, and they have a podcasting software company. Travis's Biggest Surprise in entrepreneurship One of the biggest surprises for Travis has been realizing that it's not really about the idea. It's about executing the idea and iterating it until you find people willing to pay you for that idea—then trying to take it to scale. Travis's Superpower Travis believes his superpower power encompasses his relationships and his ability to communicate with his network. Timestamps: [00:47] Getting to know Travis and what he is involved in [04:23] Travis's podcast [05:30] Travis's online course [07:55] How Travis got into entrepreneurship and the biggest surprise he has had in the journey [12:53] How has the pandemic impacted Travis's business? [20:03] Travis's superpower Quotes: “There's just a lot more testing and a lot more experimentation that has to be done in entrepreneurship before you find the thing that's going to take off.” “I think people give up too soon. Not because they're quitters. It's just because they don't realize that that's literally just part of the game.” “Failure is the success tax.” “Don't spend the money. Invest the money.” “Our most important asset and life is not our money. Money is by definition a replenish-able asset. You're the medium of transfer. Your time is the only thing that's inherently valuable. It's the only thing that is by definition in scarce supply.” “I didn't choose a networking podcast because I was a great communicator, and a great networker. I chose it because I wanted to become that.” Connect with Travis Chappelle: Website: https://travischappell.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/travischappell Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/travischappell/?hl=en

WENDY GROUNDS:  Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers.  This is our opportunity to meet with you and talk about issues that project managers are facing today.  We hope you'll continue to tell us what you like and offer your suggestions.  You can leave a comment on Google, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or whatever podcast listening app you use.  You can also leave comments on the Velociteach.com website or on our social media pages.  I am Wendy Grounds, and with me in the studio is Bill Yates. BILL YATES:  Wendy, we're going to have a fun conversation today.  We've got a great topic. WENDY GROUNDS:  Yes, we have.  And we have a great guest, too.  So his name is James Morse, and he serves as the Vice President and Head of Product for BrandMuscle.  He'll tell us a little bit more about BrandMuscle coming up. BILL YATES:  Yeah.  And James is unique in that he served the project manager role and also the sales role, project manager first in his career and then later in sales, and so really what we're going to talk about is the hatred between project managers and sales. WENDY GROUNDS:  I'd say a particularly strong dislike. BILL YATES:  Yeah, there's so many project managers who have discovered that their sales team has made some promises or overcommitments that now the project manager and the team have to deliver.  So we're going to talk about that. WENDY GROUNDS:  I think so, we're going to boil it down to communication. BILL YATES:  Yes, we are. WENDY GROUNDS:  Let's talk with James. BILL YATES:  Yes. WENDY GROUNDS:  James, welcome to Manage This.  Thank you for being our guest today. JAMES MORSE:  Thanks for having me. Meet James WENDY GROUNDS:  Can you tell us how you started your career, and how you ended up in the role that you're in today? JAMES MORSE:  Yeah, absolutely. So I think I'm very lucky to, right out of school, have gotten an opportunity within project management, which I think a lot of my peers didn't necessarily do.  They started with other careers and kind of paced into that, so I really hit the ground running.  I was doing new client onboardings and implementations, which has really just been a lot of the breadth of my career when it comes to project management.  And then I've slowly just transitioned into different opportunities, typically in SaaS and software, which has taken me to where I am currently with BrandMuscle. So I've been with BrandMuscle for a little over seven years, similar background even within the organization.  I started with new client onboardings and implementations in the project lead role and just slowly grew within that to project manager, to senior project manager, leading our team of project managers within implementation,
