Husbands, partners, and jobs come and go, but close friendships are our bedrock. Until they're not. What happens when these bonds sabotage instead of support? Who among us has the courage to walk away? And how can we protect ourselves from further heartbreak? In her provocative new book, “Estranged: How Strained Female Friendships are Mended or Ended,” (Meridian Editions) well-known gender expert and bestseller Susan Shapiro Barash takes a deep dive into the complexities of female friendships. By peeling back the societal narrative that our friendships are meant to last forever, she uncovers a more nuanced reality: the closest bonds do falter. Through groundbreaking research and 150 interviews with women aged 20 to 80, Barash reveals an emerging trend — estrangement among female friends. She uncovered how these suboptimal friendships can impact mental health, why women avoid conflict even in damaging relationships, the emotional trauma of cutting ties with a friend and estrangement as a radical yet necessary act of self-preservation. She challenges women to reimagine their friendships and take the bold step of letting go when necessary. This cutting-edge book offers an empowering path forward: learning to prioritize self-worth, stability and authenticity over loyalty to friendships that no longer serve us. Barash has written several nonfiction books, including Tripping the Prom Queen, and A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us. She taught gender studies at Marymount Manhattan and has guest taught creative nonfiction at Sarah Lawrence's Writing Institute. She was featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Elle, Marie Claire, and has appeared on TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC and as a guest on NPR and Sirius. She was a panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, a judge for the International Emmys, and Vice Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's JFK School of Government. Send us a text“You're not a cautionary tale. You're the fucking heroine.”In this episode of The Divorce Chapter, we're flipping the script on one of the biggest unspoken struggles of post-divorce life: judgement..... from others, from society, and most heartbreakingly, from ourselves.I go all in on the shame-soaked double standards that women face after divorce and tear them apart with equal parts rage, humour, and raw truth. From pitying glances to school-gate micro-judgements, to the social media algorithm demoting you to “unpartnered and problematic,” this is the episode that says out loud what so many of us have been quietly carrying. We're talking:
What is the secret to consistently delivering high-quality work, day in and day out...Recently, I was chatting with my neighbours who run a bespoke interior design and manufacturing business. They make truly stunning, customised pieces for the upper market. It's easy to think their success hinges on exceptional craftsmanship, which is surely part of it.But what really keeps their business running smoothly is something far more fundamental. In my conversation with them, we agreed that most of it comes down to things like having the right supplies available, making sure everything in its place so it can be found quickly, that tools in tip-top shape, and even something as simple as having lunch prepared so you don't have to worry about it.These basic and somewhat "boring" conditions, are what enable them to deliver consistently high-quality work. Without them, production would be a slog, quality would be all over the map, and let's face it, they probably wouldn't be in business for very long.We often take these kinds of conditions for granted. When things are running like a well-oiled machine, we assume that's just how it's supposed to be.But you, as a service design professional, know that the conditions for delivering your best work are often far from guaranteed. In fact, it can often feel like your organization is actively making your job harder, not easier. This brings us to the question: What would it take to create the ideal conditions for service design to achieve its maximum impact? And how can we actually put those conditions in place?Well, as you might have guessed already, that's where Design Operations (aka DesignOps) comes in.Getting started with DesignOps (or scaling it) can be a real challenge, especially in organizations that don't have a strong design heritage. But the good news is that John Calhoun and Rachel Posman have done the heavy lifting for us. They've gathered best practices from experienced DesignOps professionals and compiled them into a brand-new book "The Design Conductors".This book promises to help you kickstart or scale your DesignOps efforts more effectively, make a bigger impact, and sidestep common pitfalls. The result? Making your life as a service design professional a whole lot easier! So, with this foresight, we of course need to know more about this book. And you guessed it, that's exactly what this episode is all about. Here's already one key insight from the conversation: Every organization is already doing design operations. Most are just doing it unconsciously and missing out on the benefits. Yeah, there's a lot of low-hanging fruit waiting to be picked...--- [ 1. Liberation Week has come and gone, and now we're in the pause phase. The tariffs? Temporarily stalled. The market? Down, then up, then down again. We're in a holding pattern — with one major exception: the trade war with China is not only still on, it's intensifying. So what did we learn from all this? The answer starts and ends with Trump. The Democrats have branded him the “chaos president,” and they might not be wrong — but maybe not in the way they think. I don't believe Trump sees chaos as a liability. I think he sees it as a strength. When the world is spinning, he can sit back, watch the options unfold, and pick the off-ramp that benefits him most. This isn't about 4D chess or reckless stumbling. It's about comfort in disorder. Trump's not detail-oriented. He doesn't care if the tariffs were slapped together or if mixed messages were coming out of his administration. That's not the game he's playing. He thrives in the swirl, in the noise, and when the moment is right, he chooses a direction — and makes a deal. This matters politically. If the economy craters, Trump owns his executive-order recession. But if it doesn't? If this all just amounts to turbulence before stabilization? Then Democrats are stuck.Because for all the clumsiness and confusion, Trump did a thing. And that matters. In a political world where voters are constantly begging politicians to just do something, Trump did. Democrats will struggle to cut through that with a message if the damage doesn't materialize — or worse, if voters feel like they're seeing results.Which brings us to the working class, to the labor unions, to voters in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Does a falling stock market hurt them the way it hurts Wall Street? Or are they more focused on jobs, reshoring, and seeing a president at least pretend to care about their industries? That's the gamble Democrats are walking into. Now they have to figure out how to respond to it.The Trump Campaign, RewrittenIf you're like me, you probably went into 2024 expecting another messy, chaotic Trump campaign — full of infighting, wild pivots, and, frankly, incompetence. But Revenge by Alex Isenstadt tells a very different story. It's the first real deep dive into what made Trump's third run for the White House so much more stable and effective, and honestly, I think it's a must-read.This book doesn't just explain how the campaign functioned — it shows how Trump evolved. He may still be the same bombastic figure, but the operation around him was leaner, smarter, and built to survive the spotlight. The team of Suzy Wiles and Chris LaCivita comes off as professional, savvy, and above all, in control. They're not drama-free, but they're competent — and that's a big departure from past cycles. Trumpworld has often been defined by volatility. This time, it was defined by cohesion. One of the most compelling parts of the book is how it tracks Trump's own evolution over two pivotal moments: when it became clear he could go to jail, and when he nearly died. Those aren't just plot points — they're moments that reshape how a person approaches power. Isenstadt paints a picture of a Trump who, while still instinct-driven, begins to understand the stakes in a deeper, more self-preserving way. It doesn't make him less Trump, but it does add a new layer to how he maneuvers.Winners, Losers, and the Veep PickThe behind-the-scenes of the VP selection process is where the book truly shines. JD Vance and his team played the long game masterfully. They activated the right surrogates, moved in sync with the campaign's tone, and created a role that added tangible value to the ticket. Isenstadt captures not just the strategy but the discipline, something we hadn't really seen in previous iterations of MAGA campaign staffing. It feels like a glimpse into the next phase of the movement, where operatives are less bomb-throwers and more builders. Then there are the losers. Corey Lewandowski is treated with near-universal disdain by sources — portrayed as an unstable, self-interested distraction. Natalie Harp, known as the “human printer” for how closely she follows Trump, is mocked for her over-the-top loyalty. These aren't random asides — they're repeated themes, echoed by multiple voices, and they speak to a Trump operation that's becoming more discerning about who actually adds value versus who just adds noise.A Must-Read for 2024 Watchers — and BeyondWhat makes Revenge stand out is that it's not breathless or fawning. It's sober, well-sourced, and focused. It reads like a campaign post-mortem, but for a campaign that's still alive and well. And in doing so, it provides a roadmap — not just for how Trump won again, but for how the infrastructure around him is solidifying into something more lasting. If you're trying to understand where MAGA goes from here, this is the text you start with.If you're following this stuff closely — whether as a political junkie, strategist, or just someone trying to make sense of the world — Revenge isn't just good. It's essential. Trumpworld has never looked this coordinated, and Isenstadt gives us the clearest picture yet of how it happened. But don't take my word for it. What happens when twin forces, obsession and capitulation, come together? And whose story do you believe in any lovestory gone wrong? They were an unlikely couple. Greg, a post doc medicalstudent, is a planner who wants to have his career, a wife, children, a home. Anya is a free spirit, an artist living hand to mouth but passionate about her art and living a life that matters. When Greg spots her at a party, a vision dancingin a diaphanous blue shirt, blue eyes and long black hair swaying, she is like a butterfly in motion. He is captivated. She sees in him a safe harbor. Against the odds, they start to date, their differences like the jagged edges of a puzzle that fit. The seemingly golden couple were on their way.In her new stand-alone noir, THE BUTTERFLY TRAP, Clea Simon reveals the dark undertow lying beneath the surface of their connection and how despite the signs, both Greg and Anya are committed, if not to the marriage, then to their story of it. Told in two parts, we see them first throughGreg's eyes and then through Anya's. We witness the subtle fissures as they move forward with friends, careers and what begins to feel like the inevitability of marriage and family. Within it all flows an increasingly toxic push-pull of identity confusions and gender misapprehension that feed andfuel shocking and irrevocable acts. About the Author: Simon is the Boston Globe-bestsellingauthor of three nonfiction books and more than thirty mysteries, including World Enough and Hold Me Down, both of which were named “Must Reads” by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. A graduate of Harvard University and former journalist, she has contributed to publications rangingfrom Salon.com and Harvard Magazine to Yankee and TheNew York Times. Wright Thompson grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi, before going on to write for ESPN, The Atlantic, and the New York Times, among other publications. In 2018, he created the travel documentary show, TrueSouth, which is now in its 8th season on the SEC Network; and in 2020, he came out with a terrific book called Pappyland: A Story of Family, Fine Bourbon, and the Things That Last. Wright's latest book, The Barn: The Secret History of a Murder in Mississippi, examines the lasting impact and legacy of the Emmett Till murder, as well as the extraordinary efforts by some to obscure or distort the facts. It's one of the best books I've read in a long time, incredibly well researched and reported, and told with the insights that only a Mississippian could bring to the story. Sid talks to Wright about the remarkable journey of Emmett Till's cousin, Wheeler Parker, who was there the night of the abduction; the strong connection between the Mississippi Delta and Chicago; and why it took so many decades for the secrets of this horrendous crime to come to light. I'm reading Ted Gioia's "Immersive Humanities Course," 52 weeks of World Classics. Week 2 starts with Greek Poetry, and then we start Homer and The Odyssey. What a great week!I'm a beginner at reading the classics, but I've decided to just "crack the book" and get started. Here are a few of my key take-aways from this week:The surviving Greek Lyrics are very male-dominated, full of war and fighting and politics, with not a lot of attention paid to nature or beauty, or even romance. That is, until you get to Sappho, a woman. Her verses are really beautiful. I can't help but wonder why. Is it just what survived? Or is that an accurate reflection of Greek society? I thought it was the second until I read Homer. The Odyssey is full of male and female characters, and they are both important to the story. So where the poetry was very male-centric (except for Sappho) Homer absolutely isn't. I mean, Penelope seems kind of weak, but Athena is absolutely crucial to the plot. I will have to think about this a lot more.Odysseus is a pain in the neck. While I love the story, I'm not a fan of the guy himself so far, at least by Book 10. For instance, when he gets ready to pass by the Sirens, he is told to lash himself to the mast of the ship IF he wants to hear the Siren Song. And that's what he chose to do! Why would he not just say, “Nope, I'll put beeswax in my ears like the rest of the crew and we will just sail on by.” It seems supremely arrogant.Telemachus, on the other hand, seems to me to possibly be the better hero. I'm looking forward to seeing him find his dad.I have a lot of other thoughts this week, especially about the Fagles translation I read. This is a year-long challenge! Join me next week to finish the Odyssey. We'll be joined by a fun guest!CONNECTTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm
My guest Cory Hughes (on Substack) is the greatest living researcher on the JFK assassination, whose book A Warning From History will absolutely convince you that Lee Harvey Oswald was a fake identity created by the CIA, and that there were at least four shooters, possibly five, with direct, provable ties to the CIA. We discuss how they planned, carried out, got away with, and blamed Oswald for the assassination of John F. Kennedy. This episode answers these big questions, laying out Oswalds fake identity and the motivations and actions of the other participants in the assassination, but it raises far more questions and leaves them unanswered. If you find this interesting, or haven't been convinced, you absolutely MUST READ his book. Please subscribe to Cory's podcast and listen to him on Jake Shields Fight Back. Also check the first installment of MKULTRAmerica on the Unabomber.

This episode answers these big questions, laying out Oswalds fake identity and the motivations and actions of the other participants in the assassination, but it raises far more questions and leaves them unanswered. If you find this interesting, or haven't been convinced, you absolutely MUST READ his book. This funny romcom has us cracking up over chapstick zippers and a swoon-worthy MMC in this fake dating forced proximity delight.
I so wanted to title this episode "JOHN ELDREDGE TAKES US ON A MAGICAL MYSTICAL MISFIT TOUR..." But it was a little long. Not to mention way too alliterative. And I also didn't want to scare you off. Because the truth is, being a Mystic is not about being "magical". And it's also not about "wild woowoo, ecstatic visions or something" (that's a direct quote by JE, btw). So what IS it about then? Well, let's start with his (and by his I mean NY Times best-selling author and president of Wild at Heart Ministry's) newly released MUST READ book "Experience Jesus. Really." Cause the title kind of says everything. It's about the reality that experiencing the healing, joyful, playful, life-giving, restorative. wonder-filled presence of the living God (aka Jesus, just to keep us all on the same page) is available to ANYONE who wants it. Not just the few and the proud. But you. Me. Anyone really, who's willing to seek it, and make space for it, in our ordinary, every day lives. Cause who wouldn't want that? And then we talk about the how. How does one actually make space for these types of encounters in one's ordinary, every day life? That, my Misfit Friends, is what this podcast is about! Plus, we play a fantastic round of NAME THAT MYSTIC... Because what other Stupid Game would do for such a time as this? Find out more about the book... What makes the bones of a good romcom? We break it down as we chat about our hot and cold MMC who is getting a first hand lesson in writing an engaging romcom. Plus, Sarah has us laughing as she falls for the biggest breach of contract between a reader and a romcom author.
