Kitapsız bir dünya kurulamaz. Bir dünya kurulacaksa bu -mesela- Silicon Vadisi'nden değil yine Harvard'dan, Şikago'dan, Princeton'dan, UCLA'den (University of California, Los Angeles) kurulacak. Oxbridge'ten (Oxford + Cambridge), Sorbonne'dan, Bologna'dan filan kurulacak, oradan Silicon Vadileri vesaire doğacak...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: UK University Admissions Support Programme for EAs, published by Hannah Rowberry on April 24, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. A post for: Young EAs looking to apply for undergraduate courses at top UK universities (e.g. Oxford & Cambridge) EAs in contact with high school students who they may wish to refer for UK admissions support (e.g. students who have engaged with EA through outreach programmes or their local EA group) I'm offering a free programme of 1:1 admissions support for EAs applying to top UK universities in the forthcoming admissions cycle. Goals of the programme To provide young EAs with support in preparing for UK university applications, particularly to the most elite and competitive universities such as Oxford & Cambridge. Rationale: by gaining admission to the most elite and high quality universities, EAs increase their chance of having impactful academic and career opportunities in the future. To guide & mentor young EAs in degree course/major choices to best suit their interests and abilities, and to facilitate their long term academic/career goals. Rationale: by choosing the most appropriate degree course, EAs will be better placed to facilitate their future plans and optimise their future impact. The Programme - Apply Here! The programme is free of charge. Successful applicants will receive remote 1:1 support, with regular sessions to support with application preparation, including: Choosing a degree course Strategic university choices (& Oxbridge college choices) Supercurricular development Preparing the UCAS personal statement (& SAQ for Cambridge) Preparing for admissions tests and interviews If the programme is oversubscribed with eligible applicants, support may also be offered via group sessions, webinars, resources, and correspondence. The programme is being run pro bono by Hannah Rowberry, a Cambridge graduate and former Oxford Admissions & Access Officer, now working as admissions consultant. Hannah developed her interests in EA through volunteering with SHIC, developing EA resources and programmes for schools. Eligibility and selection priorities You are eligible to apply for this programme if: You are applying to UK universities for undergraduate courses in the forthcoming admissions cycle (i.e. October 15th 2022 or January 25th 2023 deadlines) If you are applying in subsequent years, but would like guidance on your current preparations for university, please get in touch. You are interested in effective altruism, and would like to pursue this further within your studies and career You have a strong academic profile and would be able to make a competitive application to top UK universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge (e.g. you have mostly 7/8/9s at GCSE, and are predicted A/As in your A levels) Priorities in selection if oversubscribed: Students with a strong commitment and interest in effective altruism, with clear intention to pursue this within their studies and careers UK universities are your main (or equal) priority compared to other options globally Students with fewer sources of support elsewhere (e.g. your school does not have much expertise in UK/Oxbridge admissions) Students from backgrounds which are underrepresented in UK universities (minority ethnic background, first generation, low income household, disabled) Note that all eligible students are encouraged to apply, the above prioritisation will only be used if oversubscribed, to prioritise the programme for students who will most benefit from support. Application process Please make an application via the Application Form. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, however spaces are limited, so early application is recommended. Despite the modest circumstances of his childhood in Glasgow, he went on to secure a place at St Peter's College Oxford and row not once, but twice in the prestigious Oxford Cambridge boat race, the culmination of 6 hours of training 6 days per week for 7 months on top of demanding Oxford academic expectations. What becomes of a man who has the sort of innate smarts and stamina? The ten Machell Cox siblings continue writing Budget letters to each other, discussing a variety of subjects.Enid is married to Cyril, a Schools Inspector, and is a wealthy Edwardian matron, in Liverpool. Edmund is a poor Anglican curate in Derbyshire, soon to marry May, my g-g-grandmother.Arthur, married to Dorothy, is Headmaster of Garfield House prep school in Plymouth. Neville works for the railways in Pretoria, South Africa. Wilfred lives in British Columbia, Canada. He has been a schoolmaster, but is currently building roads and grubbing stumps. Bernard is a London stockbroker, living at home, in Sydenham. Aldwyn is an Anglican priest in Nyasaland (now Malawi). Cuthbert is a schoolmaster at Berkhamsted School. Avice is housekeeper at Arthur's school in Plymouth. And Vera, when not playing hockey, assists her father in writing and editing his books, and looks after the aging parents, at home, in Sydenham, south London. Cuthbert is grumpy – Berkhamsted school has an influenza epidemic, everyone is ill, a Schools Inspection is underway and he is annoyed at Enid criticising his spelling.Arthur describes the search for new servants at Garfield House, as well as expressing his dismay that his favourite newspaper, The Tribune, has closed.Vera explains how wearing long skirts prevents good stickwork in Ladies' hockey and Vera and Bernard go to watch the Oxford-Cambridge boat race.Enid goes to Aintree to watch the Grand National, and they sit in a stand of seats on a barge on the canal.  And Enid and Cyril have a telephone installed in their house, for the first time. And Avice, Bernard and Cuthbert go to Branscombe in Devon for a few days to check out a boarding house and the landlady, to see if it would do for the whole family for their upcoming August summer holidays. 12. Skin in the Game - Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Skin in the Game: Hidden Asymmetries in Daily Life, is a 2018 nonfiction book by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a former options trader with a background in the mathematics of probability and statistics. Taleb's thesis is that skin in the game -- i.e., having a measurable risk when taking a major decision -- is necessary for fairness, commercial efficiency, and risk management, as well as being necessary to understand the world. The book is the last part of Taleb's multi-volume philosophical essay on uncertainty, titled the Incerto. Summary Another classic book from Taleb. He makes a sound argument for alignment of inscentives and why many problems in the world come from people not having skin in the game. Key Idea If an actor pockets some rewards from a policy they enact or support without accepting any of the risks, economists consider it to be a problem of "missing incentives". In contrast, to Taleb, the problem is more fundamentally one of asymmetry: one actor gets the rewards, the other is stuck with the risks.[1] Taleb argues that "For social justice, focus on symmetry and risk sharing. You cannot make profits and transfer the risks to others, as bankers and large corporations do... Forcing skin in the game corrects this asymmetry better than thousands of laws and regulations." The centrality of negative incentives Actors - per Taleb - must bear a cost when they fail the public. A fund manager that gets a percentage on wins, but no penalty for losing is incentivized to gamble with his clients funds. Bearing no downside for one's actions means that one has no "Skin In The Game", which is the source of many evils. An evolutionary process is an additional argument for SITG. Those who err and have SITG will not survive, hence evolutionary processes will eliminate (physically or figuratively by going bankrupt etc) those tending to do stupid things. Without SITG, this process cannot work. Examples Robert Rubin, a highly-paid director and senior advisor at Citigroup, paid no financial penalty when Citigroup had to be rescued by U.S. taxpayers due to overreach. Taleb calls this sort of a trade, with upside gain but no or limited downside risk, a "Bob Rubin trade." Intellectual Yet Idiot Intellectual Yet Idiot (IYI) is a term coined by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his essay by the same name that refers to the semi-intelligent well-pedigreed "who are telling us 1) what to do, 2) what to eat, 3) how to speak, 4) how to think… and 5) who to vote for". They represent a very small minority of people but have an overwhelming impact on the vast majority because they affect government policy. IYI are often policy makers, academics, journalists, and media pundits. Some favourite quotes The knowledge we get by tinkering, via trial and error, experience, and the workings of time, in other words, contact with the earth, is vastly superior to that obtained through reasoning, something self-serving institutions have been very busy hiding from us. Bureaucracy is a construction by which a person is conveniently separated from the consequences of his or her actions. Avoid taking advice from someone who gives advice for a living, unless there is a penalty for their advice. Seeing the psychologist Steven Pinker making pronouncements about things intellectual has a similar effect to encountering a drive-in Burger King while hiking in the middle of a national park. Evidence of submission is displayed by the employee’s going through years depriving himself of his personal freedom for nine hours every day, his ritualistic and punctual arrival at an office, his denying himself his own schedule, and his not having beaten up anyone on the way back home after a bad day. He is an obedient, housebroken dog. What we saw worldwide from 2014 to 2018, from India to the U.K. to the U.S., was a rebellion against the inner circle of no-skin-in-the-game policymaking “clerks” and journalists-insiders, that class of paternalistic semi-intellectual experts with some Ivy League, Oxford-Cambridge or similar label-driven education who are telling the rest of us 1) what to do, 2) what to eat, 3) how to speak, 4) how to think, and… 5) whom to vote for. People who are bred, selected, and compensated to find complicated solutions do not have an incentive to implement simplified ones. If your private life conflicts with your intellectual opinion, it cancels your intellectual ideas, not your private life. Survival comes first, truth, understanding, and science later.

057: James Cracknell on Endeavour   A note about Coronavrius We, individuals, groups, communities, society look up to sporting heroes, we revere and admire their dedication, their persistence, their focus, the sacrifices they make to make the most of their often rare genetics and to do so on the greatest performance stage. As the world battles Coronavirus, we're all going to be required to make sacrifices that we've never made before in pursuit of applying ourselves, to the collective goal of public health.   We've thought hard about whether while the world is taking dramatic turn, whether the appropriateness of us publishing podcast episodes about a topic of human performance is even relevant. Certainly we can appreciate that if you normally tune in but your head is elsewhere at the moment then it might be better to switch off, go an focus on what you need to do (which hopefully isn't stock piling toilet rolls) and listen to this again when it suits you best.   We've decided to continue because perhaps these episodes can offer some inspiration, maybe an hour's worth of distraction, perhaps to help refocus you on what you need to be doing. Also, there are a lot of people now distancing and isolating for the first time in their lives – I hope in some ways these episodes can be some supportive company and a positive influence as the worry and the noise surrounding the outbreak increases.   This week's episode features my interview with James Cracknell. Two time Olympic Champion in coxless four rowing, part of perhaps the most renowned rowing crew of all time the Sydney 2000 four – a team I was honoured to support. On retirement, James didn't put his feet up, in fact almost the opposite. He crossed the Atlantic with Ben Fogle, raced to the South Pole, kayaked the length of the Thames, was at the time the fastest Briton to run the Marathon de Sables, competed in the Yukon Arctic Ultra and has run the London Marathon numerous times with a best time of 2:43 which for a 90kg guy is phenomenal (at the time of recording James was headed for the London Marathon in a few weeks, but the event has now been postponed for now to October). In 2010 James undertook Ride Across America and was hit by a petrol tanker suffering a contrecoup brain injury – he is now a campaigner for the use of bike helmets – which effectively saved his life.   Last year James became the oldest competitor and the oldest winner, in the history of the Oxford – Cambridge boat being twice as old as his crew mates and competitors and older than some of his crew mates dad's. I worked with James in the pursuit of this goal and it was one of the most challenging cases I've worked on, to problem solve and innovate in such unique ways. James did so through some trying personal circumstances which played out in the press.   In this conversation James and I discuss his early in drivers, becoming part of a crew with some of the highest achievers in sport Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent. Why he kept pushing towards goals after he retired from Olympic sport and his passions for public service and how through public policy he aspires to make the biggest difference to the people's health and well-being. I do believe there is a lesson in here about creating intensity about doing what we need to do to accomplish something. I also think there is a message about feeling the fears but rather than being paralysed by them – acting upon them. Happy listening, keep your distance and wash your hands folks! Show notes Steve and James discuss their long-standing relationship Honesty and being unafraid to be unpopular James's return to high level sport and The Boat Race James required a bespoke recovery programme that enabled him to come back stronger The triple whammy of ultra-endurance endeavours, starvation on The Island and being 45! Any reputation James had disappeared rapidly at the 5K ergo Earning respect by beating Steve and Matthew There are different ways to skin a cat! James's physiology Being the best at everything that takes no natural talent     Defending titles and building on success. “Anyone can win once” Switching sides and doing the double The part vanity has to play in winning or losing Pressure Setting extraordinary goals The challenges full time athletes face! Motivating other people, being a burden, enjoying sport and rewarding yourself Relationships, perspectives and differences Swapping lycra for goretex or a gown at Cambridge and the binary nature of winning and losing Strictly what's the worst that could happen?!
