Så här var det. USA:s militär flög in i Venezuela. Maduro grips. Send us Fan MailThe Architecture of Empire: Walter L. Hixson on the Israel Lobby and the Machinery of Endless WarPart Two: The Nakba's Blast Radius and the Capture of U.S. Foreign PolicyEpisode DescriptionSeventy-eight years ago, the Nakba dismantled Palestinian society. Today, we are living inside its blast radius. What began in 1948 with the violent mass displacement of over 700,000 people has metastasized into a sprawling, multi-front geopolitical fire. We are now watching the Middle East get swallowed by a disastrous and widely rejected regional war with Iran—a conflict fueled by corrupt demagogues desperate to trade human lives for their own political survival. How does a republic repeatedly bankrupt its moral standing and its treasury to underwrite conflicts its citizens actively despise? It doesn't happen by accident. It is engineered. In Part Two of our historical deep-dive into the U.S.-Israel Special Relationship, host Jeremy Rothe-Kushel reaches back to a profoundly relevant late-2021 conversation with diplomatic and cultural historian Walter L. Hixson.Stripping away the polite fictions of Washington double-speak, Hixson exposes the actual plumbing of imperial power. We break down the modern Israel lobby in plain daylight: the massive flow of capital, the ruthless political coercion, and the organized infrastructure of silence that captures U.S. foreign policy and locks the American public into a perpetual cycle of militarism and repression. If we are ever going to extinguish the fire, we must first understand exactly who built the furnace. Step beyond the walls with us.Guest Bio: Walter L. Hixson is a diplomatic and cultural historian, a contributing editor of the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, and the author of numerous vital books, including Architects of Repression: How Israel and Its Lobby Put Racism, Violence and Injustice at the Center of US Middle East Policy and Imperialism and War: The History Americans Need to Own.Listen & Explore Further:Walter Hixson's Bio & Work: University of AkronExplore the Show Archives: Listen to past episodes, including Part 1 with Grant Smith, at the KKFI Understanding Israel Palestine archive: kkfi.org/program/understanding-israel-palestine/Beyond the Walls Substack: beyondthewalls.substack.com
In this episode of Believe in People, playwright Ed Edwards joins us to discuss The Political History of Smack and Crack - his award-winning play exploring addiction, recovery, Thatcherism, political unrest, and Britain's heroin epidemic.Drawing on his own experiences of addiction, prison, relapse, and long-term recovery, Ed reflects on stigma, Narcotics Anonymous, consumer culture, creativity, and the human realities behind substance use. Ed is brutally honest about relapse, including the “relapse before the relapse” signs like pulling back from meetings and turning irritation into isolation. We also explore why Narcotics Anonymous can feel like a higher power even if you are an atheist, and how belonging acts as a real-world protective factor in a consumer culture that competes for our attention. This episode explores addiction recovery, trauma, peer support, mental health, politics, and the lived experiences that shaped a generation.Links & Resources

In this week's episode of The Learning Curve, co-hosts U-Ark Prof. Albert Cheng and retired MN Supreme Court Justice Barry Anderson speak with Prof. Kevin Gutzman, Professor and former Chairman of the Department of History at Western Connecticut State University, and New York Times best selling author of The Jeffersonians: The Visionary Presidencies of Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. Prof. Gutzman examines the political and constitutional legacy of America's “Virginia Dynasty,” beginning with President Thomas Jefferson's philosophy of limited government, states' rights, and religious liberty. He explores Jefferson's sharp political differences with the Federalists, the importance of his first inaugural address, and major events such as the Louisiana Purchase and the Embargo Act. Turning to President James Madison, Prof. Gutzman discusses the “Father of the Constitution's” disastrous administration during the War of 1812, and reflects on how the conflict severely tested Jeffersonian political ideals. He also considers the jurisprudence of President Madison's nominee Justice Joseph Story and his relationship with Chief Justice John Marshall and other members of the U.S. Supreme Court. Prof. Gutzman highlights President James Monroe's often overlooked achievements, including the Monroe Doctrine and the “Era of Good Feelings,” while assessing the enduring legacy of the Jeffersonian presidents in shaping the Early Republic. He closes with a reading from The Jeffersonians: The Visionary Presidencies of Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe.

What if some of the most shocking events in modern history were not isolated tragedies—but part of a deeper, coordinated narrative? In this explosive episode, John Koerner examines controversial claims that connect the assassinations of major historical figures, including John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, and even John F. Kennedy Jr., to alleged covert operations involving the Central Intelligence Agency. Drawing from research, historical analysis, and controversial interpretations of documented events, Koerner explores the patterns, inconsistencies, and unanswered questions that have fueled decades of speculation. Are these connections based on evidence that has been overlooked—or are they part of a larger narrative shaped by suspicion and distrust of powerful institutions? This episode dives deep into the intersection of history, politics, and conspiracy, encouraging listeners to critically examine what is known, what is believed, and what may still remain hidden. How do we separate documented fact from interpretation? And what responsibility do we have as individuals to question official accounts while remaining grounded in evidence? Join us for a provocative and thought-provoking discussion that challenges conventional perspectives and explores one of the most controversial areas of modern history—where truth, theory, and mystery continue to collide.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. In this week's episode of The Learning Curve, co-hosts Center for Strong Public Schools' Alisha Searcy and Great Hearts Academies' Dr. Helen Baxendale interview award-winning author and biographer Dr. Jung Chang, whose international bestsellers have illuminated three generations of her family's experiences across 20th- and 21st-century China. Dr. Chang reflects on the powerful lessons drawn from the lives of her grandmother, mother, and herself under Chairman Mao's tyranny, emphasizing the importance of personal memory in confronting totalitarianism and educating younger generations. She discusses the role of her memoir alongside works by figures such as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Elie Wiesel in exposing the tragic human cost of 20th century's most murderous regimes. Turning to her co-authored biography, Mao: The Unknown Story, Dr. Chang offers her assessment of Mao's character, the catastrophic loss of over 70 million lives under his Communist rule, and the enduring myths and lies surrounding his despotic legacy. She explores China's rich pre-Communist history, including the often misunderstood reign of the Empress Dowager Cixi, the central role of women in shaping modern China, and her motivations for writing Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister. She also examines Chairman Deng Xiaoping's (the “Architect of Modern China”) economic reforms in the late 1970s, President Xi Jinping's revival of Maoist-style political state control, and concludes with a moving discussion of Fly, Wild Swans, as a tribute to her mother, including the final chapter on why she could not return to China to be at her mother's deathbed.

In this week's episode of The Learning Curve, co-hosts U-Arkansas Prof. Albert Cheng and Center for Public Schools' Alisha Searcy interview Randall Woods, John A. Cooper Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Arkansas, and author of John Quincy Adams: A Man for the Whole People. Prof. Woods shares the life and career of American statesman John Quincy Adams, the “first son of the Republic,” whose upbringing in the household of John and Abigail Adams shaped his lifelong devotion to public service. He reflects on Adams's early diplomatic triumphs, including the Treaty of Ghent and the Monroe Doctrine, as well as the 1824 election that resulted in him becoming the sixth U.S. President. Prof. Woods describes the highlights of Adams's congressional career—his leadership in overturning the “gag rule” on antislavery petitions and his powerful U.S. Supreme Court defense of the Amistad Africans' revolt at sea — before turning to the significance of his voluminous diaries in guiding future generations of the Adams family and American public servants. Woods concludes the interview by reading a favorite passage from his biography, John Quincy Adams: A Man for the Whole People.
Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast! In this installment of our special mini-series, we're joined by Dr. Mirelle Luecke, curator of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library, to revisit the infamous attempts on President Ford's life in 1975. In 1975, President Gerald Ford survived two assassination attempts in California, both carried out by women connected to radical movements. On September 5, 1975, in Sacramento, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, a follower of Charles Manson, aimed a pistol at Ford as he greeted supporters outside the state capitol. The gun did not fire because there was no round in the chamber, and she was quickly subdued by Secret Service agents. Just 17 days later, on September 22, 1975, Sara Jane Moore attempted to shoot Ford outside a San Francisco hotel. She fired one shot, which missed the president, before a bystander, Oliver Sipple, grabbed her arm, preventing further shots. Both women were arrested and sentenced to life in prison. The incidents highlighted the tense political climate of the 1970s and led to tightened presidential security measures. Connect with the Gerald R. In this episode of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, I speak with renowned foreign policy expert Vali Nasr about his book Iran's Grand Strategy: A Political History. We examine the historical roots of Iran's political and strategic thinking, from the Persian Empire to the modern Islamic Republic, and explore how ideology, geopolitics, and domestic politics shape Iran's approach to the world. Nasr explains how Iran perceives the United States and its foreign policy, and how this perception informs Tehran's dealings with the U.S., its own diplomacy, and its long-term strategy. He also offers a reassessment of the 1953 Iranian coup d'état, arguing that while the U.S. supported it, the coup itself emerged organically from Iranian political dynamics. And yes, we will discuss the issue of Iran and its nuclear program, including what the strike against Fordow nuclear site entails for Iran.

Jackson, the Dallas-based filmmaker and small business owner, has made a habit of turning the camera on tough questions. He is also impervious to the effects of either praise or criticism, so his films are decidedly absent the audience preference gene.As an independent documentarian, Jackson is a subject matter expert when it comes to showing his audiences how America's social constructs sausage is made… and he's not afraid of slaughtering a few sacred cows in the process. His film work isn't just about looking back at history and stating the obvious. Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast! We are joined by Decaturish editor Dan Whisenhunt to discuss Congress's recent decision to slash federal funding for NPR and PBS. What's behind this dramatic move to defund some of the most trusted sources of news, culture, and education in the country? Craig, Professor Stone, and Dan unpack the political calculations driving the cuts, including the growing skepticism among some lawmakers about the role and reach of publicly funded media. The conversation also explores what this decision could mean for local stations across Georgia, many of which rely heavily on federal dollars to provide educational programming, rural access to news, and local reporting that isn't covered by for-profit outlets. Together, the panel debates whether this funding decision reflects shifting media priorities, partisan animosity, or broader trends in public trust. They also consider the long-term implications for journalism, civic engagement, and the communities that count on these services the most. If you care about the future of media, politics, and public discourse in Georgia and beyond, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Jon Grinspan has done something remarkable: in his new book, Wide Awake, he tells a thoroughly researched and brilliantly crafted story that may change your understanding of the origins of the American Civil War. In this episode, Jon joins us for a conversation about the Wide Awakes, the anti-slavery youth movement that played an instrumental role in electing Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and took part in some of the first acts of violence between pro and anti-slavery Americans in 1861. Jon also discusses the ways that the past and present interact in powerful ways, and how politics can evolve, step-by-step, into violence. To quote Jon's recent article in The Smithsonian: “The most consequential political organization in American history….began when a few working-class kids designed a costume, which grew into a movement and ultimately an army. And it ended with a civil war.” Dr. Jon Grinspan is a curator of political and military history at the National Museum of American History. His book Wide Awake: The Forgotten Force that Elected Lincoln and Spurred the Civil War was released on May 14, 2024 from Bloomsbury Press. Click here to order your copy! ORIGINALLY RELEASED Aug 29, 2022 The rallying cry of liberty, equality, and fraternity echoed through the streets of revolutionary France—and still reverberates through history. In this episode, we examine the French Revolution as a foundational rupture in world history, one that shattered the old feudal order and set the stage for modern capitalism, liberal democracy, and the revolutionary tradition from which subsequent socialist and communist movements would draw inspiration. From the class uprising of the sans-culottes to the radical egalitarian vision of the Jacobins, and from the fall of the monarchy to the rise of Napoleon, we follow the dialectical unfolding of hope and horror, progress and betrayal. What did the revolution achieve, where did it fall short, and what lessons can today's revolutionaries draw from the fire that consumed the Ancien Régime? Stella joins Breht to discuss (and put a unique communist spin) on the great French Revolution!
