Today we're diving into an absolutely wild romance scam involving a man accused of pretending to be a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver—or, depending on the day, an ultra-wealthy Swiss real estate mogul. Authorities say the four-year scheme targeted at least 26 women and brought in roughly $1.3 million. Apparently dating apps weren't stressful enough already.The details only get crazier. The alleged scam included social media accounts packed with 49ers gear, luxury cars and images designed to make the whole thing look legitimate. According to the story discussed on the show, some of the online material was AI-generated, and the fake identity became established enough online that search engines and AI tools reportedly started treating the guy like an actual football player.Then comes the fake wealth. Screenshots supposedly showed bank and investment accounts containing millions of dollars, and once relationships were established, an alleged accomplice would enter the picture as the “wealth manager.” Three-way calls, fake investment returns and promises of high-yield opportunities followed. When victims ran out of money or started asking questions? Suddenly their extremely successful NFL boyfriend became extremely unavailable.It launches the crew into a bigger conversation about romance scams, our weird relationship with wealth and just how easy it has become to manufacture an impressive-looking life online. Rafe points out that you barely need a real podcast anymore—you can film yourself in front of a microphone, dispense some motivational nonsense and convince the internet you've appeared on 400 episodes of something called The Alpha Wealth Mindset Experience.Okay, we made that title up. But you've absolutely seen that guy.Listeners pile on with stories of fake celebrities allegedly trying to scam people, including Martina McBride and Mark Harmon impersonators. If Mark Harmon suddenly slides into Mom's Facebook messages and needs $700 in gift cards, maybe call somebody.That's the kind of public service you only get from a funny podcast with absolutely no qualifications to provide public services.The show also tackles the old belief that celebrity deaths happen in threes and why our brains are so desperate to find patterns in random events.From there, we discover Goodwill is getting into the record-store business with a media-focused concept called Rewind. Vinyl, CDs, cassettes, VHS tapes, vintage audio gear and whatever forgotten three-disc CD changer somebody's mom finally convinced Dad to get out of the basement. It might be heaven. It might smell like somebody else's basement. This is technically economics if nobody from an accredited university is listening.The entertainment chaos continues with Coyote vs. Acme, a creepy movie called Buddy that basically asks what would happen if a beloved children's mascot completely snapped, and news of Tom Cruise returning as Cole Trickle for a Days of Thunder sequel alongside Anne Hathaway.The crew also discovers a movie about the creation of Hooters is in development, accidentally invents an entirely different restaurant concept during the conversation, and immediately starts yelling “trademark” because apparently that's how intellectual property law works now.Finally, we get famous musicians trashing other famous musicians. Jack White versus The Black Keys. Madonna versus Lady Gaga. Elton John versus Madonna. Kurt Cobain versus seemingly everybody. Courtney Love versus Taylor Swift. June 24th, 2006. Historic Fort York, Toronto. Twenty-two songs, and buried at number fourteen is a track The Tragically Hip only ever played nine times.That is the version we spin. Same night they pulled '38 Years Old' out of the vault for the first time since July of 1995. Nine plays for 'No Threat', per Hipbase and setlist.fm, and one of those nine got audited live on this stream. There was an entry claiming November 15th, 1991. Andrew went after it, Steve pulled the tape down to check, and the correction went in while the mics were still hot.'No Threat' opens "Yer Favourites", the November 2005 double disc where fans voted on every track except the two nobody had heard yet. This one, and 'The New Maybe' closing disc two. Adam Kasper made both, the same man who made "In Between Evolution" the year before. Track one is the brand new song. Track two is 'Grace, Too'. Kevin has a word for that sequencing decision, and the word is bold.It landed at 85 on the TTHTop40 Countdown, between 'Daredevil' and 'Sherpa'. Then the poll came back from the Facebook group with a stack of loves, which was nobody's prediction at this table, plus eight percent who came right out and said they dislike it. Steve did not vote. Steve tells us where he would have landed, and it opens something bigger than the song: what do you do with a band you love and songs you don't? He has a list. He is not sorry about the list.Then there is the guitar. Jeff from Vaughan puts it in the chat first, that it is the guitar that doesn't work here, and Kevin has been circling the same thing all week. A chord that goes somewhere your ear refuses to follow. He can tell you which side of the mix it comes from and which of the two of them is playing it.WHAT ELSE IS IN HERE• Yelly Gord. Andrew's name for the thing that starts here and does not stop, straight through 'Yer Not the Ocean' and into a version of 'Blow at High Dough' that is barely a word any more. Where it came from, and which album this song belonged on instead.• Kevin catches the flip. First person the whole way through, and then for one line it isn't, and there is a woman in the room.• The last thing Gord says in the song. Nobody here can explain it. He found something else about peacekeeping that he cannot now unhear.• The Hip headlined the first two concerts ever held at the Air Canada Centre. A DAY is coming when fallen angels and evil rulers throughout the centuries will regret their decisions to rebel against God. The chapters we read from the book of 1 Enoch prophesy a time when kings and the mighty plead for a respite from their torment so they might come before the throne and worship God. Sadly, their opportunity to repent has passed. Likewise, punishment for the fallen Watchers has been decreed and is being carried out with no hope of reprieve—at least not until the abyss opens up in Revelation 9 and they're given five months to torment those without the seal of God on their foreheads. These chapters come from the section of 1 Enoch called the Book of Parables. As we've discussed over previous months, chapters 37 to 71 of 1 Enoch was completed just about the time Jesus was born. It's important because it tells of a messianic character called the Son of Man who would execute these judgments. It's the first mention of the Son of Man in any Jewish writing—and 30 years later, Jesus applied that title to himself. We also read a couple chapters dealing with Noah. We point out a couple verses that disqualify 1 Enoch as scripture—for example, Noah apparently praying to his great-grandfather Enoch. What began as a medical necessity turned into a long season of waiting. Her body had imposed limits that she had never planned for, and there was no guarantee that she would ever be able to return to a professional career. Those years required patience, resilience, and faith. Rather than completely disconnecting from her profession, Judy continued following developments in nursing and healthcare.
