J.R. Martinez is an Army veteran and burn survivor turned inspirational speaker and author. While deployed in Iraq in the wake of 9/11, J.R.'s humvee hit a roadside bomb, ejecting the other troops and trapping him inside the burning vehicle. In those horrifying moments, this resilient warrior thought of his immigrant mother who taught him what it means to use difficult situations as opportunities. J.R. awoke in the burn unit at a hospital in Texas where he would undergo many painful surgeries and begin the long road to recovery. Growing up with a single mother who did not know English and had no more than a third grade education, J.R. struggled through school, bullying and the challenges of poverty. His dream was to play football in the NFL, but life had other plans for him. Instead of playing football, he enlisted in the Army after graduation because he wanted to serve his country. Even at a young age, J.R. felt immense gratitude for everything that was available to him in the United States. Those early years of persevering through difficulties were preparing him to blaze his own path in the future instead of allowing tragedy to overwhelm him. Now he travels the country sharing his inspiring story and encouraging others that success begins with an unwavering mindset. Dave Liniger shares hard-won wisdom and practical strategies for using competition to boost your business. In this episode, he tells the little known story about a lawsuit that threatened to destroy RE/MAX in its early years. Because RE/MAX was a rapidly growing change agent in the real estate industry, they became a target for their competition. A competing real estate company attempted to sue the company over bogus claims, which the jury recognized. They overwhelmingly decided in favor of RE/MAX. But not before six months had passed in litigation, during which time the other company hoped to bankrupt RE/MAX with legal fees. Once Dave and RE/MAX won the trial, he used the experience of being targeted to his advantage. As Dave grew into an icon in his industry, he began using ethically sourced intelligence about his competition as an important foundation for growth. He recommends gathering information on your top competitors' strengths and weaknesses and using it to build your company's growth benchmark. Another great way to outperform your competitors is by harnessing the most important resource already available to you— your employees. Those who work in the field have a unique perspective on specific challenges and can offer specialized insights. Finally, the best approach to staying ahead of the competition is by taking small steps on a consistent basis towards your goals. This allows for adaptability and constant reflection throughout the evolution of your business. And remember— if you're a target, that probably means you're doing something right. From decades of wisdom forged in the fire of trial and error, Dave shares practical tips for building strong teams within an organization. One of the greatest challenges business owners face in today's market is employee retention. The first and most important step to creating a successful team is the hiring process. During the interview, it is important to ask questions about previous places of employment and how long they worked there. Not everyone is a service-oriented superstar, so if one such person shows up for an interview, it's beneficial to spend extra money hiring a strong employee. Diversity and inclusion are also priorities when building a team. It's not enough to simply meet a quota; people need to feel connected. Feeling like part of a team is correlated with higher retention rates and employee satisfaction. Offer consistent gratitude and appreciation for all team members. And finally, the best way to fine-tune team building leadership is by asking for honest feedback from employees who leave the company. As Dave leads by example, the best way to keep people happy at work is by getting to know them personally and investing in those important relationships. Since opening her first dance studio at age 20, Misty Lown has grown into a powerful leader, author and philanthropist in the global dance community through her tenacious determination. When her path crossed with Dave's at a conference many years ago, he observed her passion and preparedness and knew she was someone worth investing in. When Dave Liniger founded RE/MAX in the early 1970s, the statistics of women attending college and seeking professional jobs outside the home were just beginning to increase. The real estate industry was traditionally an “old boys club” run by older men who were resistant to change. Women were not easily welcomed into sales and had to fight for opportunities to prove themselves equal to their male counterparts. RE/MAX was an early pioneer for providing equal employment opportunities for women, largely impacted by the leadership skills of Dave's wife, Gail.Today, Dave has been influential in growing the percentage of women at the executive level. He has served on committees that provide education about the benefits of placing women in leadership positions, such as a typically more inclusive and personal leadership style. Transitioning away from the traditional militaristic approach to management increases productivity and retention rates. Placing well-qualified women in leadership roles is imperative to the success of any company, and Dave is hopeful about the changes he's witnessed over the past several decades. Glenn Stearns' personal mission is to prove the American Dream is still alive. As the founder of the country's largest privately held mortgage lending company, his entrepreneurial spirit and persistent work ethic have taken him down some interesting paths. But none of Glenn's success was handed to him; he built it from the ground up through a series of painful challenges that pushed him to get clear about his dreams. Through a difficult childhood, struggling in school, and becoming a teen parent, Glenn used each situation to strengthen his resolve. He wasn't going to let anything get in the way of his personal success. As an adult, Glenn applied the lessons from his youth to building his business. After defeating cancer and selling his mortgage lending company, he traveled the world with his family and gained new perspectives on life. His travels reinforced his belief in the opportunities America affords those who are willing to work for them. He publically experimented with this notion by starting from nothing and opening a successful BBQ restaurant on reality television. But success cannot be won by going it alone. Join RE/MAX chairman of the board and co-founder, Dave Liniger for a conversation about creating a team culture no one wants to leave. Dave discusses how having a mission-driven philosophy can benefit your team in the long run, ultimately setting everyone involved up to leave a profound impact on those they work with and for.
In the beginning of his career at RE/MAX, Dave Liniger admits he struggled to manage a quickly growing business. After decades of running a successful global company, he now offers practical wisdom for unlocking the power of productivity that can be applied to all walks of life. Time management is really about organization. Business owners should find systems that work for them to keep information organized. Dave utilizes the 4D theory: dump distractions, delegate tasks, delay when necessary, and do the most prioritized action items. Another helpful strategy for increasing productivity is to document how you spend your time in a day. Evaluate the percentage of time dedicated to actions that make money versus mundane tasks. Set goals to prioritize what generates revenue for your business and create a daily to-do list. Finally, commit to taking small steps that will help you achieve the goals you set for yourself and your team. Patience and dedication create lasting change for those willing to put in the work. Having lived through nine presidencies and seven major economic recessions, Dave Liniger knows what it means to adapt business methods in order to thrive when others are failing. From solopreneurs to C-suite executives, many people fear how the current economic recession will impact their businesses. Pivoting in the face of challenges means looking for creative solutions that will allow you to stay ahead of the competition. The best way for leaders to manage times of crisis is through outthinking and outworking others in the same industry. Another important business strategy that stands the test of time is being honest and transparent with employees. When team members trust their leadership to openly communicate an organization's obstacles, they are more likely to get on board with the plan for addressing those challenges. It is important for team members to feel a sense of investment in a company's values, especially for younger generations in the workforce. Remembering that success is not linear, those who approach difficult times with perseverance and a positive attitude have a much better chance at surviving whatever roadblocks arise. Coming from a legacy of military heroes, FlyGirl knew early on she wanted to follow in her family's footsteps and serve her country. Her desire to be a police officer led her to enroll in the army during her college years. One day, seeing a black woman in a flight suit opened her eyes to limitless possibilities, and from that day forward FlyGirl worked tirelessly to become the best fighter pilot she could be. Though a mountain of challenges stood in her way such as discrimination, sexism, and numerous rejections, she embraced her tenacious determination to achieve her dreams. Having cultivated a life of gritty perseverance, FlyGirl now applies strategies she learned in the military to business. Much of her coaching centers around making gutsy moves. In her experience as an executive coach and consultant, she encourages leaders to make decisions that push them outside their comfort zone every day. This courage allows people to push past what she calls the “gutsy gap,” that challenge that seems insurmountable. By taking calculated action even in the face of fear, FlyGirl helps activate leaders towards their highest potential. Of course, she leads by her powerful example.Main TopicsVernice's military family background inspired her career in the Marines and law enforcement (01:00)How seeing a black woman in a flight suit changed the course of her life (02:48)Through willful determination, she excelled in flight school (05:19)How Vernice dealt with discrimination and sexism in the Marines (06:20)Tips for success at any stage of business (09:50)Making gutsy moves in business and on the battlefield (13:00) Episode Linkshttps://vernicearmour.com/ Connect with Vernice:https://www.facebook.com/VerniceFLYGIRLArmourhttps://twitter.com/VerniceArmourhttps://www.youtube.com/user/VerniceArmourhttps://www.instagram.com/verniceflygirlarmour/Connect with Dave:https://www.daveliniger.comhttps://www.instagram.com/davelinigerofficial/https://www.facebook.com/DaveLLinigerhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/dave-liniger-578a7517/Listen, rate, and subscribe!

There are more than 750,000 franchises in the United States, meaning that more than 10% of American businesses are part of the franchise model.Adam welcomes back Dave Liniger to talk all about franchising and technology is likely to be one of the biggest drivers of the industry moving forward.Dave Liniger started RE/MAX in 1973, and it has become the largest real estate company in the world with a record year in 2021. He also runs a private equity company, Area15 Ventures, focused on emerging franchisors and high-growth businesses and franchise concepts.Dave tells story of beginning of RE/MAX and selling his very first franchise in Kansas City. Over the course of the next two years, Dave sold more than 100 franchises across North America.Dave explains the concept of a franchise as a system of methods, training, advertising and more that can be imparted on franchisee. The franchisee pays a fee to buy into the concept and pays the cost of opening a business, making the franchise model a great way to rapidly expand a business concept without it being cost-prohibitive. Dave shares the four key elements of franchising: Unique product or service Brand, advertising and market share Purchasing Training Technology and Systems Dave shares the story of the success of the McDonald's franchise and how it transformed the fast food franchise industry. One of the biggest benefits of owning a franchise is the access you receive to a network of peers. You get to learn from each other and share ideas and insights to grow businesses. Dave also shares that every significant, good idea for RE/MAX came from his franchisees. He tells the story of how breakfast, the filet o' fish and the Big Mac started at McDonald's thanks to the ideas of franchisees. Adam and Dave talk about a new franchise concept they have acquired through Area15 Ventures called Daddy's Chicken Shack. This business is a great example of how technology is driving the future of franchising. As a walk-up concept, the restaurant blew up during COVID, generating over $1 million in revenue. The owners designed a prototype with curbside pickup and limited seating, and featured technology that enables guests to order food via their phone, on the app and through food delivery services. The technology tracks the order and geo-targets the customer, and when they are 8-minutes away from the restaurant, they begin preparing the food. The drive-thru is also only for pick-up orders. This technology is eliminating the need for waiting in lines for pickup. The restaurant also features in-person ordering via artificial intelligence.Episode Links:DaddysFranchising.com Area15Ventures.comGet Adam's “3 Key Leadership Secrets” Guide!Connect with Adam:https://www.startwithawin.com/https://www.facebook.com/AdamContosCEOhttps://twitter.com/AdamContosCEOhttps://www.instagram.com/adamcontosceo/Today's episode was brought to you by RE/MAX, nobody in the world sells more real estate than RE/MAX. Dave Liniger started RE/MAX in 1973, and it has become the largest real estate company in the world with a record year in 2021. He also runs a private equity company, Area15 Ventures, focused on emerging franchisors and high-growth businesses.Dave and Adam pick up their conversation from last week by talking about the importance of being a lifelong learner. Dave shares how the early days of building RE/MAX began a pattern of lifelong learning that he's carried on throughout his entire career. The only constant is change, and the world is changing faster and faster as we're sitting here. And Dave believes that one of the worst things a leader can do when a learning opportunity comes their way is to assume they already know everything they need to know on that topic.Another aspect of becoming a lifelong learner is taking full advantage of personal experience. Dave shares that no one is born a leader. It comes from a cumulated lifetime of experience. And getting a college degree gives you a great head start, but that can really only give you theoretical knowledge, not practical experience with people. Leadership comes down to how you influence and control and encourage the team. And you can only learn that through personal experience. Dave addresses the importance of having a coach in your professional life. The purpose of a coach is to get more out of you than you can get out of yourself. Using their wisdom, their job is to analyze you and make suggestions on how you can improve. And the money spent on a coach almost always will multiply your financial benefit. Dave recalls that nearly all of the most successful RE/MAX agents utilized professional coaching.Lastly, Dave and Adam discuss the benefits of participating in masterminds. Dave defines a mastermind as a group of people that support you in where you want to go and are going in the same direction themselves. Masterminds are an incredible opportunity for like-minded people from different backgrounds to encourage each other. The two round out the conversation by talking about the importance of establishing good habits in your life in order to achieve your goals. One of the best ways to develop good habits is by establishing the right systems in your life. These are systems and processes that set you up for the best chance of sticking to your habits. And, if you have the right systems, the goal will accomplish itself.Episode Links:http://www.daveliniger.comhttps://www.area15ventures.comThink and Grow Rich by Napoleon HillAtomic Habits by James ClearOrder your copy of Start With A Win: Tools and Lessons to Create Personal and Business Success:https://www.startwithawin.com/bookConnect with Adam:https://www.startwithawin.com/https://www.facebook.com/AdamContosCEOhttps://twitter.com/AdamContosCEOhttps://www.instagram.com/adamcontosceo/Today's episode was brought to you by RE/MAX, nobody in the world sells more real estate than RE/MAX. Dave Liniger started RE/MAX in 1973, and it has become the largest real estate company in the world with a record year in 2021. He also runs a private equity company, Area15 Ventures, focused on emerging franchisors and high-growth businesses.Dave's experience in business and leadership is extensive and diverse—from four tours in Vietnam to owning and running a NASCAR team to building dozens of companies over the years. So he understands what it takes to start and grow a successful business. He believes that may leaders are arrogant, believing that they were the ones to create the success. But the truth is that it's nonsense. Success isn't about “me,” it's about “we.” It wasn't just Dave who made RE/MAX happen, it was the many people around him and in the company who made it was it is today.Dave shares about the mistakes he's also made along the way and how he overcame them. You can make mistakes, but don't let mistakes make you. And he believes that a leader has to be transparent to his or her team. If you make a mistake, you should own up to it and commit to not doing it again. “We're human beings, and we make mistakes. Just don't make the same mistake over and over again.”Dave provides insight on the importance of creating the right environment in a company. He shares that one of the major functions of a great leader is to create an environment where the individuals on the team can collectively succeed better than they can by themselves—and to achieve their personal goals as well as team goals. And it's more than just being a good motivator. He believes that motivation is superficial and doesn't work in the long-term. Instead, create an environment of self-motivation where people can achieve what they want to achieve. Because not everyone has the same goals. The conversation shifts to cultivating confidence and courage in the people you lead. Courage comes from experience, and experience comes from confidence—or vice-versa. Dave shares stories of how he learned to cultivate that confidence in the leaders around him, and part of that came by being an encourager. Part of the job of leading is encouraging and praising others. You lead by example, but also by heaping praise on your people. If your employees know they have someone who cares for them personally, they pick up on that.“I wish I could buy people for what they think they're worth, and work with them for a while, and then sell them for what I know they're worth,” said Dave.Adam and Dave round out this part of the conversation by talking about the difference between a family environment and a team environment in a company. RE/MAX was built as a team, with people relying on each other and their leaders to contribute and make the team better. But Dave shares that you can have team accomplishments with family values. A team that's accountable to each other but also there for each other when it's needed most.Episode Links:http://www.daveliniger.comhttps://www.area15ventures.comOrder your copy of Start With A Win: Tools and Lessons to Create Personal and Business Success:https://www.startwithawin.com/bookConnect with Adam:https://www.startwithawin.com/https://www.facebook.com/AdamContosCEOhttps://twitter.com/AdamContosCEOhttps://www.instagram.com/adamcontosceo/Today's episode was brought to you by RE/MAX, nobody in the world sells more real estate than RE/MAX. *Dreamnation Episode 206 – Rock Thomas: Rock Your Money, Rock Your Life* Whether we admit it or not, for us to be successful and live our lives by our design, we don't just need talent and skills - we also need money. Money is an integral factor to success and achieving goals. That doesn't mean only the rich people get successful, but it only means you should work out your finances to your benefit. This is why we want you to listen to this episode's podcast with Rock Thomas of Rock Your Money, Rock Your Life. In this episode, we'll help you make the choices using how much money you have to better work on yourself. Rock is the founder of M1 Mastermind and has helped people attain millionaire status and helped them become financially independent. He is a motivational speaker who has impacted the lives of so many with his viral Goalcast video "How to Change the Way You See Yourself" Here's what you missed: *Stop resisting to perform in private* * "I've learned that in life. If you don't rock your money, then it's really hard to rock your life. " (01:01) * "I tell people that when you pay the price of practice in private, you perform in public like a pro." (02:08) * "So I help people materialize the things that they want in their life, wherever they are in that process...you might as well win the money game. So that you have those choices I talked about before, and then you can do whatever you want. " (03:33) * "... life just keeps on getting better. When you start to look at those little things and dial in and stop resisting what most people are resisting, which is to perform in private." (08:44) *Become the victor* * "So when you are subject to adversity, I say that in life, if you do it as difficult.... It requires courage, but when you do it, you get to expand your identity." (06:23) * "...everybody plays the victim card. And then when you play the victim card, what you do is you give up your power to the outside circumstances." (07:37) *Talent pushes* * "…how you do anything is how you do everything." (09:45) * "Who benefits, who becomes a better person for their next job, the guy who's, didn't give it meaning and mediocre or the guy who made a game up and decided to give it meaning and to serve." (11:20) * "…whatever you're doing, do it with passion, do it like it's the most important job do it like you can make a difference" (11:46) * "Like be bold, be bold and serve, be bold and serve. And you'll be amazed. The world lacks so much talent world is screaming for talent. And talent to me is talent pushes non talent doesn't push." (14:27) *Energy comes from vision* * "...people don't think about the, the aura that you really bring into a room when you do that." (12:18) * "...you visualize it and they're about to come onto your show. You become alive. Energy is produced. It's an inside job..." (16:42) * "You don't need any fuel. You need a vision that you're fricking connected to. And that's where energy comes from." (17:07) * "This is if you don't know your vision or right now, you don't feel like you have a vision, surround yourself with other people who do and borrow theirs until you get your own." (17:42) *Keep on Chasing* * "I want to be around bad asses and I got fired up and I got inspired and I started to chase and chase and chase. It took me four years, but I became the number one agent in that office. And then I bought the company and I took it from 300,000,094 agents to 275 agents." (19:24) * "but one thing for sure. Is they push, they push for their own greatness and the greatness of people around you." (20:27) *Talent needs to be challenged* * "...talent loves to be challenged...People that are, that are struggling often can't handle the adversity." (20:49) * "…a tree that grows in beautiful soil and flourishes it's because it has rich soil called support. It has the sun called encouragement and it has the wind called challenge." (20:59) * " if I come from my model of the world and only challenged somebody who grew up with a ton of encouragement and support, they're going to wilt like a flower. I got to give them the right amount of challenge. But I also have to give them the right amount of encouragement and support. " (22:28) *Create a new unfamiliar territory* * "So isn't it fascinating that your past can predict how you are motivated? And if you lack the adversity, a lot of adversity may take that person out. " (23:15) * "A lot of people, they aren't willing to adapt to whatever the changes" (23:39) * " tactics change with technology." (25:38) * "And so most people are not aware that those two principles, the laws of behavior don't change." (25:59) * "... instead of becoming unfamiliar, right. Going to the unfamiliar. Your past will become your future unless you create new unfamiliar territory." (26:44) *The cash flow quadrants* * "... you were taught to save money, to spend money." (31:04) * " So I take people through how to win the money game is Robert Kiyosaki's cashflow quadrants. And for those people that don't know it is there's four of them. One is you're an employee and one is you're self-employed that's on the left side, 94, 95% of the population. It's a skill set to be on that site, a certain skillset. Then, then the other side is business person investor, which is about 5% of the population." (32:36) * "And so if you want financial freedom, you have to walk through that process of where you at in each of the four quadrants." (36:02) *Teach with experience* * "And so now I teach people the four different quadrants, how to build an identity, what to do, what not to do. And you can't teach what you haven't experienced." (37:10) * "That's not the voice that's working for me right now. If there was somebody on the side who had run that race, they would know what to say." (37:52) * "So if you want to coach your teach, teach and coach what you've experienced, what you have emotional experience on, and then the person will get that you get them. And there's nothing like that. " (38:18) *Hiring for your weaknesses* * “So I'm a big picture, high D go hard, go quick. Uh, don't like to details... you surround yourself with people that can do what you can't do." (39:13) * "... find out who you are and delegate to your weaknesses." (42:16) *People try to be the lone wolf* * "I was all about being, um, alone, because I was afraid to admit that I didn't know" (43:31) * "... we don't apologize for being awesome. As the real estate industry has evolved, we’ve been trained to focus on who owns the data. And Zillow’s acquisition of ShowingTime has many concerned about sharing their data with the proptech giant. But what if hoarding your data is not the only way to compete with a company like Zillow? What if it’s not really about access to the data but what you do with it? Nick Bailey is the Chief Customer Officer at RE/MAX. With nearly 25 years of industry experience, Nick served as an agent, broker and proptech vendor before becoming the head of a major real estate franchise. On this episode of Industry Relations, Nick joins Rob and Greg to share his take on Zillow’s acquisition of ShowingTime and what’s behind the industry’s emotionally-charged reaction. Nick offers insight on how the data Zillow acquired was already publicly available, explaining why that information doesn’t necessarily give the tech company a competitive advantage and reminding us that it’s not unusual for companies at scale to offer various products and services to the industry at large. Listen in for Nick’s perspective on what we can do to improve the process of buying or selling a home for consumers and find out why you shouldn’t panic about Zillow’s acquisition of ShowingTime. What’s Discussed: Nick’s background as an agent, broker, tech vendor and head of a major real estate franchise Why Nick sees Zillow’s acquisition of ShowingTime as one tech company acquiring another to make the process of buying and selling homes easier for consumers How ShowingTime’s market share influenced the industry’s emotionally-charged reaction to its acquisition Nick’s argument that the data Zillow has acquired was already publicly available How Nick addresses the objection that the ShowingTime acquisition forces agents and brokers to provide Zillow with a competitive advantage How it’s not unusual for companies at scale to offer various products and services (e.g.: RE/MAX’s acquisition of Motto Mortgage) What Nick is doing to educate agents around the spirit of cooperation in the industry How Nick thinks about whether Zillow is a RE/MAX competitor What the real estate industry can do to improve the fragmented process of buying or selling a home Nick’s insight on what differentiates RE/MAX in a competitive industry that includes a growing number of iBuyers The trend toward a greater concentration of power among fewer agents and how that might contribute to the panic around Zillow Nick’s advice for MLS, franchisor and large brokerage CEOs on using data to identify trends and create contingency plans accordingly Connect with Nick: Nick at RE/MAX Nick on LinkedIn Connect with Rob and Greg: Rob’s Website Greg’s Website Resources: ShowingTime’s Press Release on Its Acquisition by Zillow Nick’s Video on Zillow’s Acquisition of ShowingTime Market Leader Rob’s Post on Zillow, ShowingTime & Paranoid Realtors First App Steve Murray at REAL Trends Motto Mortgage NAR Code of Ethics We Are RE/MAX on Facebook Brad Inman’s Piece on Zillow & ShowingTime Gary Keller’s 2021 Family Reunion Vision Speech Recap The Art of the CMA: Win Hearts, Minds, and Loyalty by Mastering Real Estate’s Most Versatile Tool by Greg Robertson Dave Liniger at RE/MAX Our Sponsors: Cloud Agent Suite Notorious VIP
