They also review Celine Song's new romantic comedy-drama Materialists starring Dakota Johnson as a New York Matchmaker. For your season 6 bonus episode, Chelsea and Madison have dusted off their English degrees and learned how to read (again) to discuss Allison Raskin's debut novel, Save the Date. After Emma's fiancé unexpectedly calls off the engagement, months before the wedding, Emma is left high and dry with a stack of non-refundable wedding deposits. Solution? Save her wedding date and find a new groom! This is certainly not your average rom-com and Madison and Chelsea discuss how it defies tropes and expectations, while still ticking all of the necessary genre boxes. General consensus on the book? It should be made into a movie and Emma's parents must be played by Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody.Digressions include the oppressive heat, Chelsea's weird foot tan line, and so much more.Connect With UsFollow us on Instagram @loveatfirstscreening or send an email to loveatfirstscreening@gmail.comProduction Hosts: Chelsea Ciccone and Madison HillMusic: Good StephArtwork: Chelsea CicconeSocial Media: Marissa CicconeAbout the ShowAn examination of classic tropes and iconic characters pits connoisseur against cynic—one romantic comedy at a time. The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. In Love at First Screening, Madison introduces Chelsea to all the fan-favorite love stories she's never wanted to watch. One friend's passion might be the other's displeasure, but doesn't love conquer all? Tune in every Wednesday to find out.

So Kevin and Lauren are back, sans Andrew and after a much needed week off. this week they cover Fantastic Four, Trainwreck: Poop Cruise, Locked, Sirens, The Life List, and ASH. Kevin kicks off the show with his mostly spoiler-free review of Fantastic Four: First Steps. It's another solid Superhero movie in a summer where it felt like the genre could be at a tipping point. But, for Kevin at least, this film, Thunderbolts, and Superman have kept hope alive. This one is worth catching in the theaters and is a great entry point into Marvel for anyone, as it has no real ties to anything else right now. Next up, Lauren puts her travel experience to work in reviewing Trainwreck: Poop Cruise. Yes, the name is silly, but this is something that really happened. And wow was it disgusting. All in all, it was a quick entertainning watch, but it certainly left Kevin and Lauren with more questions than answers... Kevin kicks off his first review from his horror thriller week with a review of Locked, starring Anthony Hopkins and Bill Skaarsgard. This is a decent thriller with a SAW-adjacent plot where a man is locked in a car and is left to the whims of a rich man who just feelings like being an a-hole. It's not bad and it's not great, but the leads do a great job, so it's not entirely worth missing if you have Hulu right now. Lauren and Kevin finally find some common ground, as they both watched Sirens on Netflix. This is one of those shows that's not a RomCom, not a drama, and not really a comedy. It sits in the funky grey area where it's an amalgum of those things, but somehow less than. The performances are great and it's a quick watch, so, much like Locked, it's not entirely skippable, but you won't hate yourself for missing it, either. Lauren then moves on to another Netflix film that's not quite a RomCom with The Life List. This one is better than Sirens and has a sweet storyline that keeps it entertaining. When a girls mom passes away, the daughter is sent on a scavenger hunt of sorts for her inheritance. If that doesn't sound fun to you, I promise it's better than it sounds and really is sweet, although it does feel Hallmark-esque. Finally, Kevin closes out the show with the film ASH, on Shudder. This is a very pretty, very viscreal sci-fi horror(?) flick. The main performers are Aaron Paul and Eiza Gonzalex and they are honestly really great in this. The rest of the film is a bit of a mishmash of good ideas, possibly stolen from Event Horizon and Memento, that don't quite come together. It's kind of great as a visual medium, but it's definitely lacking overall. This isn't one you need to fire up a trial of Shudder for. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Stassi's back with Auntie Al (Alex Stafford) and the new moon in Leo has them both in full rom-com mode. “As the world changes, what place do my polyamorous romantic comedy novels have in our society? If the world now understands and somewhat accepts open relationships, is there even a need for my novels? These novels are for pre-pandemic times, BEFORE a lot of things changed — so what happens now? Are they ‘subversive enough,' and is there a place for them?”These are some of the questions your host, polyamorous romcom indie author and Life Coach Sagan Morrow, explores in this episode of the Author Diary Entries podcast! We discuss the importance of subversion and politics as part of creative expression, Sagan's thought process in applying this to her Polyamorous Passions novels, examples of what this looks like in burlesque dance (including a play-by-play breakdown of the subtext for one of Babe Maverick's most recent burlesque performances), and the deeply sinister nature of the seemingly-innocent “You should smile more!” comment that men so often say to women (and the way you can subvert this through the creative expression of living life). Matt and Dawn welcome a new voice to the show, site contributor Ruthie Nugent, to review 4 brand new shows. First up, Jimmy McGovern's hard hitting single drama Unforgivable. Prime Video's The Assassin, which sees Keeley Hawes as a retired Assassin forced out of retirement just as her son arrives to visit. Next, Lena Dunham's first new project in years, this time for Netflix and London set RomCom homage Too Much. Lastly, the BBC are hoping they can continue their streak of popular reality series with Destination X, which, in theory, could be a Traitors and Race Across the World hybrid. That's the theory, anyway. Finally, Dawn challenges Matt and Ruthie to name as finalists of I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here as they can.

50 minutes de fou rire avec une des personnes les plus hot que je connaisse : Rubi Pigeon. Entrepreneuse, fondatrice de la marque Rusmin, créatrice du compte @dress4unotforthem – un de mes comptes mode préférés, parce qu'elle me rappelle que at the end of the day, fashion is just an opinion. The most delightful fake dating rom-com with humor and depth has us laughing together as we discuss this delicious story!
We're back from our (unplanned, sorry!!) break with a big one. Lena Dunham has returned to television with a Netflix series that many online are claiming to be as good as - or even better than - Girls, the much lauded HBO show that launched her career. Conversely, critics are writing scathing reviews for broadsheets about the portrayal of romance, women and London in the show. But which is it? And are our hosts impressed with the Megan Stalter fronted romcom? This week, Ione and Gina get to grips with whether Too Much is hot or a flop: exploring the representation of class dynamics, the acclaim the series is receiving for fat representation, and questioning why Jess, the show's lead, has absolutely zero mates.Support our work and become a Polyester Podcast member

For The New Yorker's series Takes, Carrie Brownstein—the co-creator of Sleater-Kinney and “Portlandia”—writes about an iconic rock-and-roll image. In the summer of 2003, the musician Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power, was transitioning from an indie darling to a major rock artist, and the staff writer Hilton Als wrote a Profile of her in The New Yorker. Facing his piece was a full-page portrait of Marshall by the celebrated photographer Richard Avedon that puts her in the lineage of rock rebels of generations past. With a long ash dangling from her cigarette, a Bob Dylan T-shirt, and her jeans half unzipped, Cat Power “maybe doesn't give a shit about being in The New Yorker,” Brownstein thinks, “which I can't say is usually the vibe.” Avedon's image reminds Brownstein “to keep remembering … to keep going back to that place that feels sacred and special and uncynical.” Carrie Brownstein's Take on Richard Avedon's portrait of Cat Power appeared in the April 20, 2025, issue. Plus, audiences have been bemoaning the death of the romantic comedy for years, but the genre persists—albeit often in a different form from the screwballs of the nineteen-forties or the “chick flicks” of the eighties and nineties. On this episode from the Critics at Large podcast, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss their all-time favorite rom-coms and two new projects marketed as contemporary successors to the greats: Celine Song's “Materialists” and Lena Dunham's “Too Much.”

It's the plot of almost every ROMCOM movie out there. The choice of a professional career, or the love of your life. We sometimes find ourselves to be living out this scenario in real life, but often people choose the seemingly safe and comfortable path rather than taking the pay cut in order to be with the one they love. So what do you think? What's more important?

Audiences have been bemoaning the death of the romantic comedy for years, but the genre persists—albeit often in a different form from the screwballs of the nineteen-forties or the “chick flicks” of the eighties and nineties. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss their all-time favorite rom-coms and two new projects marketed as contemporary successors to the greats: Celine Song's “Materialists” and Lena Dunham's “Too Much.” Do these depictions of modern love—or at least the search for it—evoke the same breathless feeling as the classics do? “I wonder if the crisis in rom-coms has to do with a crisis in how adult women want to be or want to see themselves,” Schwartz says. “I think both of these projects are basically trying to speak to the fact that everyone's ideals are in question.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Sex, Love, and the State of the Rom-Com” (The New Yorker)“Materialists” (2025)“Too Much” (2025)“Working Girl” (1988)“You've Got Mail” (1998)“When Harry Met Sally” (1989)“Love & Basketball” (2000)“The Best Man” (1999)“Our Romance with Jane Austen” (The New Yorker)“Girls” (2012-17)“Adam's Rib” (1949)New episodes drop every Thursday. It's just Kevin and Lauren this week and they came prepared. They talk about Life of Chuck, Cleaner, Materialists, The Swarm, and Equals. Lauren kicks off the show with a largely positive review of the new Mike Flanagan/Stephen King joint, The Life of Chuck. Putting those two men together you'd think this would be a horror fest, but it's a poignant film about a man's life. Early comparisons were drawn to The Shawshank Redemption, but Lauren feels this movie doesn't quite have that same depth. All in all, it's still a good movie and worth a watch. Speaking of good movies, Kevin didn't bother to watch any this. Instead, he kicks off his first of two “I watched it so you didn't have to” segments with Cleaner on MAX. This is Die Hard clone that lacks much of the DNA that made that film great. It's not necessarily a bad film, but you'd do better with the OG. It stars Daisy Ridley as a former soldier turned window cleaner who gets stuck outside her building when eco terrorists take over. She's forced to battle her way back inside (which takes far too long) so that she can save the day because, of course, the entire police force is unable to breach the building. Look, it's better than Skyscraper, so there's that… We flip back to goodness with Lauren's review of Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and some guy named Pedro Pascal. It's a love story and billed as a RomCom, though Lauren and Kevin discuss the fact that it's less funny and more thoughtful than most, leaving it a bit in the ratings limbo. Folks going to see a Failure to Launch type movie are coming out disappointed. That said, it's a really good movie about love and self discovery and is well worth a watch. Just go in with more grounded expectations. Let's talk about expectations for a second. Have you ever seen the trailer or poster for something ad said to yourself, “that's going to suck”? A wise person would not watch said offering. But Kevin has no fear. On HBO, he came across the series The Swarm and it's… well… not good. It's not about a killer swarm of bees. That would make sense. It's about an underwater hive mind turning everything in the ocean against humanity. Think The Abyss, but globally, and much, much worse. At its core, it ends up being a neat concept but a very poor offering overall. Getting into the spirit, Lauren closes the show with a review of the film, Equals. It stars Nicolas Holt and Kristen Stewart and that's about where the good part ends. It's a futuristic society where people have been stripped of emotion and if you develop emotions, you get wiped. Our two stars develop emotions (obviously) and fall in love (obviously-er) which leads to them struggling to escape this world so they can be together. It ends on a semi tragic, semi vague note that leaves you wondering, “why did I do this?” As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Two childhood best friends realize they're in love and break up with their significant others to be together – that's a classic romantic-comedy storyline. But in her book, Funny Story, author Emily Henry wonders about some of the other forgotten cast members: what happens to the people who got dumped along the way? In today's encore episode, NPR's Juana Summers asks Henry about writing male characters that go to therapy, leaning into the cringey moments of falling in love and looking up to her own parents' relationship. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
In this Friday Feels episode of U Up?, Jordana and Jared dive into the chaotic brilliance of the 90s rom-com My Best Friend's Wedding. They unpack the iconic “Say a Little Prayer” scene and ask why George isn't the real lead?! George is loyal, hilarious, and flies to Chicago twice with zero expectations. Jared jokes he'd do the same for Jordana! The two debate who the true villain is: manipulative Julianne or emotionally unavailable Michael. They also question why everyone in the movie is kissing on the lips, including Kimberly and her dad. Through it all, they explore how the film's dated relationship norms still spark modern-day debates about friendship, insecurity, and love, especially through the performances of Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everett.
