See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's November, so that means it's time for our āXenovemberā series, where we cover movies from another world! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Chrissy Kurpeski discuss Tobe Hooper's trippy 1985 exploration of Britain being invaded by space vampires, Lifeforce!Disturbingly casual nudity! On today's episode, we welcome the dynamic duo, Lily Yasuda and Michael Wolfe, two inspiring filmmakers who have decided to take the road less traveled by creating their own feature film, Like Love. Their journey is one of collaboration, determination, and creativityāfilled with moments of laughter and the occasional unexpected hurdle. From the outset, you'll sense the chemistry between Lily and Michael. They first crossed paths during their time at Chapman University, bonding over vulnerable and humorous writing assignments in a creative writing class. Their shared passion for storytelling sparked not only a friendship but also a creative partnership. This partnership culminated in the idea for Like Love, a project born out of their desire to challenge traditional romantic comedy tropes.āWe wanted to tell a story that feels real and honest,ā Lily shares, āabout friendships and the complexities of human connection.āAt its heart, Like Love is what they call an āanti-romantic comedy.ā Drawing inspiration from classics like When Harry Met Sally, Lily and Michael aim to flip the script on the genre. Instead of perpetuating the myth that friendship between men and women inevitably leads to romance, their film explores the beauty of platonic relationships. As Michael explains, āIt's about two friends trying to fall in love and realizing they're better off as friends. That's the kind of story we don't see enough.āTheir filmmaking journey hasn't been without its challenges. Crowdfunding has been a pivotal part of bringing Like Love to life. Lily and Michael describe the process as āa full-time job in itself,ā requiring not only meticulous planning but also a willingness to be vulnerable and open about their creative vision. They've leaned heavily on their network for support, finding generosity in unexpected places.āThe community in Boise has been incredible,ā says Lily. āPeople here are so supportive, offering locations, resources, and even homemade meals for the crew.āDespite the logistical hurdles, their passion for storytelling shines through. Michael, the film's director, admits that directing a micro-budget feature comes with unique pressures. āWe're all wearing multiple hats,ā he notes, ābut it's an amazing experience to work so closely with a team that believes in the project.ā Lily, who also stars as the film's lead, balances her roles as actor, writer, and producer with grace, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in every aspect of the project. As they reflect on their experiences, one thing becomes clear: Like Love is more than just a film; it's a testament to the power of community and perseverance. Lily and Michael hope their story inspires other aspiring filmmakers to take the leap. āMaking a movie isn't easy,ā Lily acknowledges, ābut if you're passionate about your story, you'll find a way to make it happen.āBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

Matthew and Riki dissect Netflix's You and how it exposes toxic rom-com masculinity. Joe Goldberg thinks he's the romantic hero, but his obsession with being the male protagonist leads to stalking, manipulation, and murder. How does You deconstruct rom-com mythology? The show reveals what happens when someone believes they're destined to "win" the girl through grand gestures and persistence, regardless of her actual feelings. Why do classic romantic comedies teach problematic lessons? From Say Anything to When Harry Met Sally..., 80s/90s rom-coms normalized stalking behaviors as romantic devotion.Does Joe's unreliable narration work as social commentary? We debate whether the show successfully critiques toxic masculinity or risks creating viewers who sympathize with his "romantic" motivations.Other topics: Serial killer vs. murderer definitions, the symbolism of Joe's book preservation room, Penn Badgley's performance balancing sympathy with horror, the way Joe constructs a dream version of his girlfriend in his mind, instead of seeing the real person she is, and comparisons to other problematic protagonists like Joker. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network.
