As prabhu mentioned, we talked a lot about what our goals were. You know, before getting married, we wanted to make sure that we were in sync—what we wanted to do with our lives, how we wanted to serve our Gurudeva and the mission. We found that we had a lot of things in common. Of course, when you're young and you get married, you don't know what's going to happen down the road. So we have always kept Kṛṣṇa in the center. Whatever was best for our service to our Gurudeva, and whatever helped us to remember and serve Kṛṣṇa, that's how we made our decisions — whatever was best for our service. Throughout life, we all have big decisions to make, right? We've always made those big decisions based on what was best for our service. I guess some of the principles are learning how to communicate well with each other, to understand that we're in each other's corner. We support each other. We have each other's back, so to speak. It's a rough world out there, and you want to know that when you come home, you have someone who is there to support you.I don't mean just saying, “You're always right,” or something like that, but showing love and support. Learn how to communicate with each other so that you truly understand what the other is saying because we have different ways of communicating. In the first year or two of our marriage, that was the thing we worked on the most: clear and honest communication. We have disagreements. We don't have fights, but we have disagreements, and we can work them out. We can talk it out. I feel really fortunate to have someone who always has that mentality. As I said, the big thing was making sure that our goals were in line and that we stayed true to those goals. The whole world has this kind of madness because of krodha or cynicism, and it's self-protective. It's hard for people to entertain the idea that there may be some truth. So Prahlāda Mahārāja here gives what may be the antidote to that. First of all, he describes: "sa tvaṁ hi nitya-vijitātma-guṇaḥ sva-dhāmnā." He's describing the mechanism of the material world. And he's saying that it has various elements that are countable. Then he points back to the cause of all of it, which is the Supreme Independent Person. Prabhupāda puts this parenthetically to show what the purpose of all this analysis is: to come back to the Supreme Independent Person, who, through His external energy, has created the material mind, which is the cause of all suffering in the material world. He describes his experience in this process, or being in the material world, as being crushed—"niṣpīḍyamānam," "I'm being crushed by the Wheel of Time." And then he comes to the ultimate conclusion, which is that now I surrender to you. This is kind of the vulnerability of the person who comes to the conclusion that I'm not the supreme controller. The first interaction I remember having with you was at the old Calcutta airport sometime in the 1990s. A group of about six god sisters, traveling together, arrived on the same flight as you and a few god brothers. Our cars had not yet arrived to take us to Mayapur, and we were unsure what to do. There were no cell phones. We were stuck. Whilst everyone else from the flight left, you, alone, stayed behind to help us arrange transportation. I'm not sure how long it took, but you didn't leave until we were safely packed and on our way. This simple act of kindness left a lasting impression on me. Since that time, I have witnessed and often heard about many such instances of your personal care and willingness to go out of your way to give your association and support. Your loving friendships with your god siblings have been a source of inspiration to me and so many others. You embody the same personal warmth and compassion with which Śrīla Prabhupāda interacted with His disciples. It doesn't matter one's position, what service one renders, or how steadily one maintains devotional service standards. You always offer understanding, encouragement, and heartfelt compassion. (excerpt from HG Nirakula Dasi's offering) ------------------------------------------------------------ I received from his home, His Holiness Radhanath Swami, a piece of advice which I hold dear and which I consider one of the most useful pieces of advice I have ever received. In one of our conversations, in which I was complaining about how overwhelming all the problems are in management, and I was listing some of the conflicts that were seemingly intractable, he gave me straightforward, very simple advice that I go back to again and again. He said to me, "You have to be blissful in order to deal with problems. Therefore, your main duty as a leader/manager is to find out how to make yourself blissful by being deeply absorbed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness." I feel that this answer contains all of Śrīla Prabhupāda's most important instructions. It's at once practical and fully aligned with Śrīla Prabhupāda's mood. And I will say that Rādhānāth Swami exemplifies this, because of his advancement in devotional service. Despite the fact that he has service that is unimaginable for any one human being, he is able to handle it because he always remains blissful by being engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness—hearing and chanting, remembering Kṛṣṇa wherever he goes—and this is the key to life. I'm forever grateful to him for his association, for all he's doing for the saṅkīrtana movement, and for this one piece of advice, which has kept me steady and engaged in service over so many years. I just got off a class with the devotees in Mayāpur. We are taking the Bhakti-vedānta, and we have been reading this morning from the section of the Bhāgavatam: Kṛṣṇa chastises Kāliya. In our discussion, we had been talking about the ways in which Kāliya had received Kṛṣṇa's mercy because he danced on his hoods, but he simultaneously pounded him with his lotus feet. Because of that, he vomited out all the poison that he had, that was because of his unfortunate mentality, which he had become envious of. But somehow or other, his wives had offered prayers when they saw that Kāliya's mood had changed, and he had become a surrendered devotee. We were discussing about this point at which one decides to surrender to Kṛṣṇa. You don't have to wait till the poison is all pounded out of you; you can voluntarily surrender. And having the association of his wives, Jīva Gosvāmī said, who were pure devotees, that's what gave him an opportunity. His wives had thought that he must have done something previously to give him this opportunity to get Kṛṣṇa's mercy of dancing on his heads with His lotus feet. gītā su-gītā kartavyā kim anyaiḥ śāstra-vistaraiḥ yā svayaṁ padmanābhasya mukha-padmād viniḥsṛtā Because Bhagavad-gītā is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one need not read any other Vedic literature. One need only attentively and regularly hear and read Bhagavad-gītā. In the present age, people are so absorbed in mundane activities that it is not possible for them to read all the Vedic literatures. But this is not necessary. This one book, Bhagavad-gītā, will suffice, because it is the essence of all Vedic literatures and especially because it is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. On this retrospective, the AW team take a trip to 1995, where actor Mel Gibson rode off the with multiple Oscars, winning Best Picture for his war epic, Braveheart. While a hit within its own right, it was a bit of a shocking win considering many believed that Apollo 13 was going to take home Oscar's top prize. It's a massive upset that would have ripple effects over the course of Academy history that would have make up wins not just for Ron Howard, but for other nominees in this Oscar field. 1995 is a stacked, incredible year of cinema that the gang tries to reflect a little better than what the Academy nominated with films like Heat, Showgirls, Get Shorty, Clueless, Seven, Before Sunset, Friday, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and more getting either mentions, nominations, or wins in the big top eight categories.Maybe one of them wins Best Picture, maybe they don't, you'll have to listen and try not to fall down a flight of stairs to find out. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 1995, briefly discuss talk about Braveheart as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy.
