Ep 270 “The Family Protection Rewards Program” – National Gun Violence Awareness Month (Bullet Poof Bulletins) Celebrating the launch of eco-fiction anti-gun novella Bullet Poof and National Gun Violence Awareness Month, Avis Kalfsbeek brings back beloved Kitty O'Compost with the Bullet Poof Bulletins. Tonight on the Spoke-Easy stage, Kitty O'Compost exposes a leaked corporate loyalty program designed to transform fear into customer retention. This bulletin satirizes the growing tendency to gamify personal security through status tiers, reward points, and exclusive memberships. Inspired by the grounding, collaborative themes of Bullet Poof, this episode laughs at the commercialization of belonging and points us back to the real safety found in open, connected community spaces. Resources: Bullet Poof is a hopeful eco-fiction novella about what happens when ordinary people refuse to accept the gun status quo. This episode you meet John Mashl who grew up in RI and went to USAFA for engineering, as nav qualified. After suffering a major injury in wrestling class he eventually healed up and received his pilot waiver our Firstie year. Yes, that was against the flow of all our classmates losing their PQ's in that era (including yours truly) but John took it to UPT and flew for over two decades in USAF C-130 squadrons flying rescue and weather missions worldwide. Upon retirement from USAF he landed a pilot slot at Delta, got furloughed for over two years, returned to flying, and finally retired from them after 18 years. John has witnessed and lived through many aviation and life experiences and I'm sure you will be inspired by his story.

Tonight on the Spoke-Easy stage, Kitty O'Compost breaks down a leaked consumer software update that turns everyday home surveillance into a simulated tactical threat matrix. Tonight on the Spoke-Easy stage, Kitty O'Compost deconstructs a venture-capital-backed lifestyle trend that attempts to turn home defense into a recurring monthly delivery service. This bulletin satirizes the "Tactical Preparedness Box of the Month," exposing how modern e-commerce ecosystems hook younger buyers into a cycle of subscription-based domestic panic. Inspired by the connective and grounded themes of Bullet Poof, this episode exposes how commercialized fear profits off household isolation, pointing us back to the real strength found in open, cooperative neighborhood connection. RBC's Canadian Industrials Conference in Toronto wrapped with more reasons for optimism than many expected. In this conference takeaway, Walter Spracklin, Director of Canadian Research and Co-Head of Global Industrials Research, debriefs with analysts Sabahat Khan, James McGarragle, and Matthew McKellar on the key themes that emerged. Steel producers are finding ways to mitigate U.S. tariffs, the freight recession is easing, and the most significant buzz centred on the government's nation-building infrastructure and defence plans.Key Points• Canada's nation-building plans are boosting industrial confidence, while its defense strategy creates a tailwind for the country's aerospace sector.• Tighter supply has helped to ease the long-running freight recession.• Steel suppliers are diversifying from U.S. exposure to mitigate trade tariffs.• Tariffs have also hit lumber hard, with supply tightening in response.• AI deployment is positioning the transport sector for operational efficiencies.Introductions [00:06]Host Walter Spracklin refers to RBC's recent Canadian industrials conference in Toronto, which heard from 38 participating companies. He introduces three colleagues – Sabahat Khan, James McGarragle, and Matthew McKellar – to discuss the key themes that emerged.Freight recession eases [00:47]The freight recession dominated last year's conference, but tighter supply driven by regulatory changes has lifted pricing, with positive impacts on rail too.Tariff impacts on industrials [02:05]Section 232 tariffs are creating direct impacts across steel-exposed industrials, while broader tariff uncertainty is delaying some large capital project decisions.Government plans inject confidence [04:30]The Canadian government's new strategies on nation-building infrastructure are lifting confidence in the market. Its plans to increase defense spending and prioritize Canadian producers are seen as a potentially lasting tailwind for aerospace companies.Paper and forest production [9:36]Demand is poor and the lumber sector has been hit hard by tariffs. However, tighter supply has set up the industry for better conditions at lower levels of demand in future.AI and capital allocation [13:01]Other common themes at the conference were the deployment of AI to achieve efficiencies, especially in transport; and the disciplined allocation of capital, balancing organic growth with strategic M&A.

Why do ship recycling prices differ between Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and Turkey when all markets are driven by steel? In Episode 2 of Steel, Ships, and Recycling Values, Nayeem Noor, VP - Business Development and Communications at GMS, speaks with Jamie Dalzell, Head of the GMS Singapore Office, about why recycling destinations convert steel value into bids differently. The discussion explains how Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and Turkey each price vessels through their own mix of steel demand, currency, banking support, LC availability, yard appetite, compliance capacity, downstream liquidity, and timing risk. This week's market backdrop shows why regional price spreads matter. Bangladesh continues to show strong demand and workable LC support, but monsoon timing and physical beaching windows remain key constraints. Pakistan remains firm when steel and currency align, while India continues to offer depth, compliance capacity, and flexibility even when it is not the highest headline market. Turkey remains a distinct recycling destination for EU-linked, regulatory, or geography-driven cases. For shipowners, brokers, financiers, traders, and maritime professionals, this episode offers a practical explanation of why the highest headline price is not always the best recycling deal. The right recycling destination depends on the vessel, buyer quality, finance, delivery terms, compliance requirements, and execution risk. Cult films attract audiences looking for something different from mainstream cinema. They often feature unique storylines that challenge societal norms or conventional storytelling. For instance, Sons of Steel, a 1988 Australian film, presents a narrative filled with bizarre characters and absurd situations, making it a quintessential example of 'ozploitation' cinema. Its outrageous plot and distinctive style invite viewers into a world that is far from the polished productions of Hollywood. *2. Nostalgia and Era Reflection* These films often serve as time capsules, reflecting the cultural and social attitudes of their time. The 1980s were a period of experimentation in film, where directors pushed boundaries to create memorable experiences. Freaked, which blends humor with horror, captures the essence of the decade's fascination with the bizarre. The film, featuring a star-studded cast and outrageous scenarios, mirrors the audacious spirit of 80s pop culture, making it a nostalgic favorite for many. *3. Community and Fandom* Cult films foster a sense of community among viewers. Fans often gather to discuss, celebrate, and share their love for these unconventional movies. Bill and Chris emphasize the importance of viewer engagement in celebrating these films, noting that the audience's reactions and interpretations can elevate the experience. This communal aspect of cult cinema is vital in creating lasting legacies for films like Sons of Steel and Freaked. ### Deep Dive: Sons of Steel When discussing Sons of Steel, Bill and Chris highlight its eccentricity and notable performances. The film, based on a short called Nightmare, showcases a unique blend of action and comedy, making it a standout in the cult genre. Its absurdity is both entertaining and perplexing, inviting viewers to question the very nature of what makes a film enjoyable. *The Characters* One of the film's standout features is its eclectic cast, led by Rob Hartley, whose performance is described as both "fascinating and off-putting." The characters are exaggerated caricatures that reflect the film's overall tone and style. This exaggeration contributes to the film's cult appeal, as fans revel in the absurdity and humor embedded in the characters' interactions. Exploring Freaked In contrast, Freaked embraces a more comedic approach to its bizarre narrative. The film's absurdity is not just in its plot but in its delivery, filled with over-the-top performances and surreal visuals. Bill and Chris discuss how Freaked exemplifies the 80s fascination with eccentricity, capturing the era's spirit of experimentation. *The Humor and Satire* Freaked uses humor as a tool for social commentary, poking fun at various societal norms and expectations. Its satirical take on cult culture and the notion of normalcy elevates it from being just another odd film to a thoughtful critique wrapped in humor.

Professor Olivier Schmitt describes the systemic challenges of military transformation, given rapidly evolving technology and NATO's distinct strategic cultures. Modern defence and security reviews highlight the deteriorating security environment and the need to prepare forces. But, as we hear from Lord King (Season 6, Episode 3), the ability to adapt will be essential; we need a mindset that allows for continuous change. This is both enabled by, and made harder within, an alliance context where members' different strategic cultures – with different civil-military relations, defence procurement and operations – present systemic dilemmas. They trace how the region's last pre-WWII blast furnaces poured thousands of tons of iron a day for Carnegie's Homestead Works across the river; how the Bessemer converter made steel cheap and scalable enough to raise skyscrapers, lay railroads, and float a navy; how steel jobs forged the American middle class and drew Black workers north in the Great Migration; and why the lessons of this “man-made volcano” still matter as America fights to bring manufacturing home.

And so we're back from outer space (or wherever it is Indieventure hosts like to go on holiday). Yep, after our little recording hiatus – seamlessly covered for with pre-recorded Pokémon chat, bet you didn't even notice that was a weird one – your intrepid trio is back together for the first time in a month, and naturally we all have one question on our minds: what have we all been playing while we were apart? Of course, two-thirds of the group were on dream holidays and thus didn't play a whole lot, but there's still plenty to talk about, between all the cool indies that launched in April/May and all the awesome games that have been sitting in our backlogs waiting for exactly this kind of downtime! So Rebecca (who is the only one who hadn't been on her holidays yet at the time of recording) dusted off some intriguing older one-shot indies in the form of 2:22AM and Babette, as well as falling down the Forbidden Solitaire rabbit hole. Rachel made the most of about one week with her PC, also playing Forbidden Solitaire as well as Wax Heads, Phonopolis, and a frankly unbelievable amount of other games given the short time she was home. Liam has only really played one indie game all month, but since it's Mina the Hollower he's certainly not short of opinions to share with the group. We end as ever on our latest round of hyperfixations, and Rachel currently thinks there's nothing better in this world than a sweet little TikTok remix about a cat named Serafino (and she's probably right!). Liam proves that South Korea is still completely dominating the Netflix original programming market with Culinary Class Wars, a cooking competition made extra special by the contrasting personalities of the two hosts. And Rebecca is finally ready to talk about The Saint of Steel series by T Kingfisher, the series singlehandedly responsible for turning her opinion of romantasy on its head. Steel explains why the market may still be underestimating the long-term consequences of disruptions in the Middle East, how energy insecurity is forcing countries and companies to rethink the way they operate, and why the next phase of the AI boom could depend less on chips and more on infrastructure. The pair also discuss why oil prices have behaved so strangely during this volatile period, what investors are missing about renewables, and what the next phase of this sector has in store.
