Glenn Powell (Top Gun Maverick, Twisters, Anyone But You) plays Beckett Redfellow, the apparent eventual heir of a multi-billion dollar fortune from the Long Island-based Redfellow clan.....only he's the eighth in line after his late mother was pushed out of the family right before he was born.  So inspired by the sudden reappearance of Julia (Margaret Qualley) a seductive socialist he has had a crush on since childhood, he decides to embark on a unique mission to move up closer to that inheritance by murdering everyone else in the Redfellow clan one-by-one.  The Redfellow family members who are his targets are played by Ed Harris, Zach Woods, Bill Camp, and Topher Grace among others.  Directed by John Patton Ford (Emily the Criminal), let's find out exactly HOW Beckett lives up to the title of this film. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Megan Lachinski, and Ben Langford join me to discuss the latest film from John Patton Ford, "How To Make A Killing," starring Glen Powell, Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace & Ed Harris. Loosely inspired by the 1949 British film "Kind Hearts and Coronets" by Robert Hamer and John Dighton, the film tells the fictional story of Becket Redfellow, disowned at birth by his wealthy family, who will stop at nothing (not even murder) to reclaim his inheritance from his many relatives who stand in his way. What did we think of it? "How To Make A Killing" is a black comedy thriller film written and directed by John Patton Ford. Following his Sundance directorial debut feature film "Emily The Criminal," Ford gathered the talents of Glen Powell, Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, and Ed Harris to bring his loosely inspired contemporary version of the 1949 British film "Kind Hearts and Coronets" to the big screen. It wasn't always the easiest process (when is making a movie ever easy?), and Ford was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his experience and work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from A24. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes revisit "In Good Company", '00s workplace dramedy starring Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace, and Scarlett Johansson. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field like this film quite a bit. It has a warmth to it that still works, anchored by strong performances and a story that taps into the fear and uncertainty of a changing corporate landscape. That said, the movie struggles a bit with perspective. The Mikes discuss how it never fully decides whether Topher Grace or Dennis Quaid is the true protagonist, which muddies the emotional throughline.Butler also has some issues with the choices Quaid's character makes, finding that certain decisions do not ring true. And while the ending is satisfying on a surface level, it leans heavily into a very Hollywood resolution, tying things up a little too neatly for characters supposedly pushing back against corporate conformity and somehow winning.Even with those flaws, "In Good Company" remains a likable, well-meaning film with plenty of heart and enough insight to make it worth revisiting.

What Were They Thinking?

Ah yes, 2025. What a year for great film. Wait, that's not what we do... The guys start the year off correctly by talking about the cream of the crap for the previous year of cinema, starting off with Mel Gibson's Flight Risk. Did Mel really need AI for a moose... and a MOTEL?! Why is the vetting process for pilots this awful? What is with that bald cap? Why in the world was Hasan played by a different voice actor and physical actor? This movie is a mess! Next week: music is the soundtrack of movies. Throughout his storied career, the legendary Steven Soderbergh has directed a wide array of highly acclaimed films and/or hits (Out of Sight, Ocean's 11, Magic Mike, Black Bag, Logan Lucky, Contagion, Sex, Lies, & Videotape) and THIS is the film which earned him his only Oscar for Best Director in 2000.  This was actually one of two films (the other being Erin Brockovich) which he was nominated for in 2000 which turned out to be a TRULY stellar year for him!  It's a sprawling story about the American "War on Drugs" during the late '90's, focusing on several different characters on different sides of the law and various levels of the drug trade including two DEA agents (Don Cheadle, Luis Guzman), a judge who has just been appointed the National Drug Czar (Michael Douglas), the wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) of a suspected drug dealer (Steven Bauer), that couple's conniving attorney (Dennis Quaid), a teenager (Erika Christiansen) who becomes addicted to crack, and one conflicted Mexican cop (Benicio Del Toro who won an Oscar for his performance).  It's a complex story delving into a lot of moral grey areas and it's a testament to all of the talent involved (including Oscar-winning writer Stephen Gaghan) that this film was not only highly acclaimed but also a word-of-mouth blockbuster with audiences at the time of release.  However twenty-five years later, it is not often mentioned by many as among Soderbergh's best....so how does this ambitious ensemble hold up?  Let's find out if any one gets away clean.....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The movie you're making us watch today is Flight Risk, directed by Mel Gibson, featuring Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery, and Topher Grace. Despite the star power, this action thriller stumbles at nearly every turn. The plot, which centers on a high-stakes flight with a fugitive, feels like a tired mix of clichés, and the performances, while competent, can't save it from its unconvincing dialogue and predictable twists. Gibson's direction does little to elevate the material—why does a film with such a promising premise feel so flat? What happened to the tension we were promised? In 1993 Mel Gibson's first directorial effort was a smaller movie named “The Man Without A Face.” Since then he's made nothing but big, epic movies like “Braveheart” and “Hacksaw Ridge.” Now he's going back to his smaller movie roots with the suspense thriller “Flight Risk.” Mel starred in “Father Stu” with Mark Wahlberg and apparently they forged a friendship because Wahlberg is the name at the top of the poster for this movie. In Gibson's latest directorial effort, Wahlberg plays a pilot flying a U.S. Marshal, played by Michelle Dockery and her cooperating government witness, played by Topher Grace, out of Alaska in a small plane. Seems pretty straightforward right? Not so much, otherwise we wouldn't have a movie. As this movie's trailers show, Wahlberg is really a hitman hired by the mobster that the witness will testify against. After Wahlberg makes his move against them, the U.S. Marshal manages to subdue and restrain him. Now she has to try to fly a plane, with no training, while keeping an eye on the witness and especially on the hitman. Will the marshal and the witness make it out alive? Who else is involved in this assassination plot? Is “Flight Risk” even worth putting your seat in the upright position and stowing your tray table to watch? Find out in this episode! “Flight Risk” also stars Leah Remini, Monib Abhat, Paul Ben-Victor, Maaz Ali and Eilise Patton.   Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

For the most part, it's a surprisingly good week for January movies here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with the one that's not so good: "Flight Risk," and even that's not completely terrible. Mark Wahlberg stars as a pilot flying a U.S. Marshal (Michelle Dockery) and a fugitive (Topher Grace) to Anchorage, but the skies aren't so friendly. Mel Gibson directs, which you'd never know from the trailers. In theaters. Then, we loved "Presence," the latest experimental lark from Steven Soderbergh. It's a haunted house movie where the ghost is the camera. Soderbergh makes clever, elegant use of his first-person perspective. In theaters. We also catch up with the comedy "One of Them Days," which is a total delight. Keke Palmer and SZA have terrific chemistry as roommates who must come up with the rent on their run-down Los Angeles apartment by the end of the day, or they'll be evicted. It felt really good to laugh this week. In theaters. Finally, we did our usual Friday Movie News LIVE! Hugh Grant is most well known for his comedic and gentler performances in “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “About A Boy.” That's not what you're getting from ol Hughie in this week's movie I'm reviewing, “Heretic.” In this movie he comes off like he'd be right at home being roommates with Hannibal Lecter. He plays the mysterious Mr. Reed, who two Mormon women visiting his home to perhaps convert him, are unfortunate enough to meet. The women are Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, played respectively by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, and they early on suspect that their conversion attempt might turn into a survival game. Mr. Reed is no uninitiated, uninformed candidate for religious conversion. You realize that he's very well versed in all things religion. However, you also realize he's got other characteristics that are more sinister that the poor sisters just might have to worry about. What are those characteristics? Will the poor sisters make it out alive? Is it worth finding out in theaters?
