Time to misbehave.   Virginia Feito's new novel, Victorian Psycho, is all about good behaviour, positive standards and polite conduct…and what happens when you flout all that, by – I dunno – slaughtering a houseload of people.   It's a much buzzed about book that takes the psychopathy of American Psycho back to the straightlaced, be-corseted world of the 19th Century, then let's rip. Hablamos con la joven escritora Virginia Feito, cuya ópera prima, La señora March (Ed. Lumen), se ha convertido en un fenómeno de crítica y público en Estados Unidos, donde ya se está preparando la película sobre este thriller psicológico. Antes, leemos un fragmento de Yo, Tituba, la bruja negra de Salem (Ed. Impedimenta), novela en la que la escritora guadalupeña Maryse Condé, Premio Nobel Alternativo de Literatura en 2018, se mete en la piel de la única persona negra acusada en la famosa caza de brujas. Ignacio Elguero nos sugiere varias lecturas: Kilómetros de tiempo, libro que recoge la obra poética de Carmen Castellet, una de la escritoras del exilio republicano menos conocidas y que ahora recupera la editorial Torremozas, a la que felicitamos por su cuarenta aniversario; Se arrodillan para beber (Ed. Visor), de la autora colombiana Ángela García, que ha ganado el Premio Casa de América de Poesía Americana con este poemario volcado en el poder de la palabra; y Hierro Fumando (Ed. Nórdica), volumen en el que nuestro compañero Jesús Marchamalo repasa la vida y la obra del poeta José Hierro. Además Javier Lostalé nos pone tras la pista del escritor estadounidense Lamar Herrin, muy vinculado a nuestro país, donde se acaba de publicar por primera vez su volumen de cuentos Homenaje póstumo y otros relatos (Chamán Ediciones). Por su parte, Mariano Peyrou nos presenta a la poeta extremeña Carmen Crespo, que el año pasado publicó el poemario Roma (Ed. Contrabando) y se hizo con el Premio Nacional de Poesía José Hierro por en sí ni un solo momento. Virginia Feito nació en Madrid en 1988, y debido al trabajo de sus padres ha tenido la oportunidad de vivir en París, Londres (donde estudió Literatura Inglesa y Arte Dramático, y desarrolló su amor por la literatura gótica), Nueva York y finalmente de nuevo Madrid. El año más importante de su vida fue 2019: dejó su cargo en la agencia de publicidad, una labor con la que había cosechado numerosos premios, y se sentó a escribir. En inglés, el idioma con el que creció. ¿Y quién es La señora March? Está casada con el escritor George March, un autor de éxito que publica con regularidad de metrónomo. Su última novela acaba de salir a la calle, es un éxito rotundo, y su esposa está encantada de los elogios y el estatus que les otorga este renombre. Su vida es perfecta: tiene el marido ideal, la casa estupenda, el guardarropa soñado y un día a día sin sobresaltos. Seguramente este episodio de La Academia de Marketing Online es el más especial hasta la fecha (por lo menos para mí). También ha sido uno de los más fáciles de preparar. Mi invitada ni siquiera tuvo que enviarme su biografía porque me sé su vida de memoria. Los oyentes más veteranos (hay más de uno que nos lleva escuchando desde que empezamos en 2014) probablemente reconoceréis su voz. Al fin y al cabo, fue ella la que narró la introducción de los primeros 300 y pico episodios. ¡Quién iba a decir que esa narración se acabaría escuchando más de 4 millones de veces y que eventualmente ella estaría en el programa como invitada! Te cuento… Virginia Feito es mi hermana pequeña. La pobre tiene bastante poca idea de Marketing y Negocios Online. De hecho, ni siquiera tiene redes sociales y costó bastante que se animara a montar una página web. Pero hay una cosa que sí sabe hacer. Lo puedes llamar “pura cabezonería”. O si eres más cursi, “perseguir sus sueños”. Bueno. Sabe de eso y por lo visto también de escribir novelas… Un buen día Virginia dejó su trabajo en una importante agencia de publicidad para hacer algo con lo que llevaba soñando desde los 5 años: escribir un libro. Y lo escribió. Hasta aquí todo normal. Lo que ya no es tan normal fue la subasta que tuvo lugar entre las principales editoriales americanas para publicarlo. Tampoco la puja por los derechos internacionales.  Ni la subasta para hacer la película que será interpretada por Elisabeth Moss. La Señora March ha sido elegida como una de las novelas del año por The Times, Oprah Daily, Evening Standard, las librerías Barnes & Noble y Waterstones, el New York Times y el USA Today entre otros. Ha recibido reseñas brillantes en el Economist, The Observer, The Guardian, la revista People y el Washington Post. Han hablado de ella en El País y en Vogue. Virginia Feito —la que narraba la introducción de este podcast en 2014— ha cumplido su sueño de convertirse en una bestseller mundial.
