Our conversation for Tourism Tuesday with Justin Kerns from Winchester/Frederick County COnvention & Visitors Bureau featured Tim Youmans, Winchester's City Planner. Tim recently published a book: Streets and Alleys of Winchester, VA. We talked about the 20+ years of research that went into the book and he told us several stories of how and why certain streets were named in the city. We discussed the history behind a few notable streets changing from Turnpike to Pike to Avenue and learned the origin of Cedar Creek Grade. You can purchase a copy of the book at Winchester Book Gallery on the Old Town Walking Mall in downtown Winchester or at Winchester Frederick County Historical Society located at 1340 S. Pleasant Valley Road in Winchester.

In the 13th episode of the Honky Tonk Heroes Podcast, I sit down with singer/songwriter Chris Huntt Jr, out of Winchester Virginia. Chris is part of a growing group of young, talented musicians coming out of Winchester, which includes names such as Brennan Edwards, Jake Kohn, and Low Water Bridge Band to name a few. Chris has only been picking and singing for a few years now, but sounds much more experienced than that. He recently released his first song, titled "Demons," which showcases Chris's depth of thought and originality in his songwriting. Thanks to all of you for listening and for your support, hope you enjoy!HTH Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/honky.tonk.heroes/HTH Merch- https://honkytonkheroespod.com/

In this episode, I talk with upcoming singer/songwriter, Jake Kohn, from Winchester Virginia. Jake's vocals and original songwriting have gained him a very substantial following, especially considering the fact he is only 15 years old, and has no music on any major streaming platforms. Jake's music at the current moment is exclusively found on Youtube and throughout social media, which has been an instrumental part in growing his following in the past year. Jake is one of the few that seems destined for success in the country music scene, and has one of the brightest futures in country music of anyone his age at the moment. “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit.” Today I am attending a memorial service at the Tabernacle Church in Danville, Virginia, for Dr. Lamarr Mooneyham, a dear friend that I met at Lynchburg Baptist College, now called Liberty University. Lamarr, along with his wife Debbie, came to LBC the second year the school was in existence in 1972. He came with a group of other students from North Carolina who were pretty excited about Jesus. I remember thinking that they were kind of a wild group, hooping and hollering, and throwing their Bibles in the air in our regular chapel services. Honestly, I think Lamarr was on the more reserved side of the group. Lamarr and I had the privilege to play on Liberty University's first football team in 73. I think we were the only married guys on the team. We called Lamarr the Hollywood Preacher because he could take his helmet off and his hair would still be perfectly in place. We became close friends during those years, studying the Bible together in many classes, doing evangelism and visitation, and spending lots of time together going to practices and games! He would preach for me in the church I pastored in Winchester Virginia on special occasions. He had his wife Debbie were faithful servants of the Lord and were greatly used to advance His kingdom. The following is from Lamarr's obituary: Dr. Lamarr Mooneyham, (74), was born on October 3, 1948 in Greensboro North Carolina, and passed away on January 12, 2023. During his college years, Lamarr planted a church in Boydton, Virginia. After his graduation in 1976, he would plant another church in Durham, North Carolina. He made political waves during the Helms-Hunt Senate race of 1984, then served as an interim pastor at Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte, before accepting the position of senior pastor of The Tabernacle in Danville, Virginia, in 1986. He would serve in this role until his retirement in 2016, picking up a doctorate from Liberty University along the way. Lamarr is survived by his bride of 54 years, Debbi, and their four children: Isaac Mooneyham of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina (wife Corrie, daughter Olivia, and sons Michael, David and Benjamin), Kelley Nix of Fairfax, Virginia, (husband Jason, sons William and Jacob, and daughters Phoebe, Evelyn, Ophelia and Eliza), Jacob Mooneyham of Bethesda, Maryland (wife Gena), and Joseph Mooneyham of Bethesda, Maryland; as well as numerous members of his extended family. Aside from his love for pastoral ministry, Lamarr was most passionate about missions. He will be remembered as a friend and advocate for the orphans of Haiti, the Jewish refugees, and countless other missionaries and mission organizations. I also personally want to note that Lamarr loved my parents, J.O. and Albertina Grooms, and made sure they received a very good financial support from his church. After my dad passed, Lamarr was very specific about my mother being taking care of with their support. I'll miss my dear friend, but I know he is greatly enjoying heaven because of his faithful service to the Lord. He no doubt heard these words from the Lord when he entered heaven the other day, “Well done you good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord”. I just wanted to use my chat today to honor Lamarr's memory and celebrate his life! Truly the greatest blessing Lamarr enjoyed was what we read in Psalm 32:1: “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit.” Lamarr is in heaven because one day he found forgiveness through the precious blood of Jesus Christ! Are you ready for heaven? Have you ever experienced God's forgiveness? God bless!

This is a story I found in a book a while back called The Big Book of Virginia Ghost Stories written by L.B. Taylor Jr. I've always found this story very eerie and hope you all enjoy it!I was a long haul trucker for many years. In December of 2004, I had a delivery in Winchester, Virginia and a second stop in Washington, D.C. At my first stop I was delayed and didn't get unloaded until after 2:00 AM. I left Winchester heading east on Highway 7. Around 2:30 I came to the intersection of Highway & and Route 601 near Bluemont. At a gas station, I pulled in to check my map of Washington in anticipation of my delivery. The station was closed at that hour. There was virtually no traffic going by and it was a cold, moonless night. While I was sitting there, someone knocked on my door, startling me. I jumped and turned off my interior light so I could see outside and rolled down my window.A man was standing there in an airline flight crew uniform. He had four stripes on his shoulder epaulets indicating a Captain. He was without a jacket on a very cold morning. He climbed up on the step of my cab. He smelled like he had bathed in kerosene. When he got close to my face, I could see that his cap had the TWA insignia on it."Could you give me a lift?" he asked in a voice that seemed raspy...I hope you all enjoyed this story as much as I have. It kind of reminds me of the phantom hitchhiker stories.Everything about this story just creeps me out. The fact that it took place near the crash site, the pilot being from the discontinued airline service and wearing a short sleeve uniform on a chilly day!Remember if you have had a paranormal experience and would like to see it featured on this site be sure to send it into webmaster@spookyappalachia.com! “The king shall have joy in Your strength, O LORD; And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice! You have given him his heart's desire, And have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah For You meet him with the blessings of goodness; You set a crown of pure gold upon his head. He asked life from You, and You gave it to him-- Length of days forever and ever. His glory is great in Your salvation; Honor and majesty You have placed upon him. For You have made him most blessed forever; You have made him exceedingly glad with Your presence. For the king trusts in the LORD, And through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved.” I am so thankful for all my friends and everyone who takes the time to be a part of these Pastor Chats each day. I do trust that the Lord is using them to encourage you, and helping you to begin your day with seeking Him, and to enjoy a “quiet time” of devotion from the Word. I know I've said it before, but as I prepare and do these chats, I am learning so much more myself from the Bible that my heart is blessed and strengthened. So again, thank you so much from the depths of my heart! For the next several months we will be going through the Book of Psalms. It is the largest book in the Bible with 150 chapters. The longest chapters in the Bible are found in this book. We know that David wrote at least 75 of the Psalms. We will find that there is a tremendous amount of repetition of prayers, praises and petitions in the Psalms. You will soon feel like you are reading the same thing over and over again, and you are! There must be a reason the Holy Spirit inspired the writers to repeat the same prayers and praise so often. The obvious reason is that we need to be reminded to both pray for help, and praise the Lord as He responds to our prayers and gives us victory and deliverance! I read at least 5 Psalms every day. I have read through the Psalms numerous times out loud with my staff at all three churches I have pastored. I have read through the Psalm numerous times in my every Saturday morning men's prayer meetings over the past 35 years. I remember that when I taught the Bible classes in our Christian schools, in both Winchester Virginia and Holland Michigan, that I had the students read 5 Psalms out loud with me. The Psalms never grow old and seem to be as fresh and encouraging as if I've never read them before! What an amazing Book!!!! I said all that because I'm afraid you might start thinking, “Goodness, Pastor Mike has already said that before!” And no doubt, I'm sure I did. But I think we will both be blessed as we hear it again and again over these next several months, as it is my intention to read the entire book aloud with you on these chats before we are through with this study on Psalms. Psalm 21 is a sequel to Psalm 20. These two Psalms go together. Both were written by David as we learn from the inscription and title. Psalm 20 is a prayer before the battle. Psalm 21 is a praise after the battle. David and his people had prayed for specific blessings and God had granted them. The hymn opens and closes with praise for God's strength granted to His king and the army (vv. 1, 13). Answered prayer should always be acknowledged by fervent praise. In this wonderful praise hymn we will see: In verses 1-7, David and the people look back over past victories and deliverance and celebrate with praise. In verses 8-12, David and his people look ahead and anticipate future victories. And In verse 13, they look up and exalt the Lord for His strength and power! May God give us the grace to always acknowledge Him for His daily blessings in our lives! God bless!

Today we start a new chapter in Revelation, but before we begin, I wanted to take time to remember a dear friend, Dr. Ed Hindson, who went to be with the Lord yesterday morning. I'll never forget Dr. Hindson coming to Lynchburg Baptist College as a guest speaker in 1973. Immediately I was impressed with his knowledge of the Bible and his wonderful ability to make it come alive. He came back the next year as a full-time professor and I was privileged to sit in his classes for my last two years at LBC. Dr. Hindson was a very gracious and kind man who never said no when I would ask him to come speak for me. His first conference with us was in Winchester VA at Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church. For a couple days he went to a very rustic camp setting with our young couples to talk about the family and finished by speaking on the weekend in our Sunday services. Edith and will never forget that we took him out to dinner at a local restaurant on Sunday afternoon. Our son David, who was about two or three years old, was with us. David proceeded to totally misbehave and act as bad as a three year could, no matter what we did to calm him down. We remember being very embarrassed as we had really wanted to impress Dr. Hindson with our wonderful family. But Dr. Hindson was so gracious in taking it all in and acting like it was ok! There is no doubt that I was greatly influenced by Dr. Hindson in my views on prophecy and Revelation. He could teach through the entire book in forty-five minutes. Dr. Hindson taught at Liberty University for 48 years. He was the Dean Emeritus of the School of Divinity and Distinguished Professor of Religion. Dr. Hindson was current host of The King Is Coming, a syndicated television broadcast shown across the United States. Dr. Hindson has written more than twenty books that deal with Bible prophecy and the imminent return of Jesus. If you want to study Biblical prophecy and especially the Book of Revelation in more detail, I would greatly encourage you to use Dr. Hindson's material and listen to his YouTube videos. You will indeed be blessed. We will all miss Dr. Hindson greatly and I ask that you pray for his wife Donna and their family. Now, Dr. Hindson would be a little miff at me if I didn't say something about Revelation 18. So today, let's just start by saying we need to remember that John in describing two judgements on Babylon in chapters 17 and 18. In chapter 17 John is speaking of ecclesiastical, religious Babylon that takes a place of influence and power in the city of Rome during the first three and half years of the Tribulation. In the middle of the Tribulation the Antichrist will have the ten kings of the revived Roman Empire (Europe) hate and destroy her. In Revelation 18, John is speaking of commercial, economical and political Babylon that will take a powerful place of influence over the whole world for the last three and a half years of the Tribulation. John sees this Babylon also destroyed in “one hour” by God Himself. In this chapter we will hear four voices that make four important announcements concerning this commercial Babylon. For sure the spirit of this Babylon is already at work in the world around us and we should be careful that we don't get caught up in it! God bless!
Season 2 Episode 75 4/18/22After dewinterization the day before our trip, I noticed low water pressure in the bathroom sink. And I saw a small leak underneath it. So after some research I saw the aerator was clogged. I tried to clean it to no avail. So we bought a new one and put it in. The next day we finally got on the road for our Kentucky 2022 trip. Our 1st stop was in Lititz, PA. A 3 hour drive from home. Remember we limit our travel days to 4 hours. We stayed 2 nights at a Boondockers Welcome location. We also plan our stays at a 2 night minimum unless that says driving is very short or we are staying at a Harvest Hosts. So we pulled in and plugged into their 50amp electric. Set up our grill. And headed over to intercourse PA. and did some shopping. We then headed back to the RV and cooked shrimp skewers on the grill. The next day we went to Lancaster for a little bit then to Turkey Hill experience where the ice cream is made. It was definitely not our cup of tea LOL however for a young family it looked like it would be a lot of fun! We then drove over to the Utz potato chip factory. We took their free tour which was okay. Then we hit their outlet store and bought a few bags of chips and pretzels. Then back to the rig again for dinner tonight was tilapia and asparagus on the grill. So this was our first experience using the heat strip up on the roof that I installed in the air conditioner last year. I'll tell you what it worked beautifully. It was around 50° at night and the RV was kept around 70 to 72 all night long. We like this much better than space heaters because this system heats our rig in its entirety. Previously we were using two space heaters so those two areas were warm but the rest of the rig was cold. Prior to that we were using the gas furnace and we learned rather quickly after a few weeks on the road that electric space heaters are much more efficient for us then propane. And with the electric heat strip we don't have any condensation on the windows LOL. Here's a link to our heat strip that I installed. https://amzn.to/3uUjhsy And unfortunately we need a new thermostat when we installed that control the heat strip the gas furnace in the AC. Here is a link to that thermostat https://amzn.to/3iANi9M When we were using our space heaters we did buy thermostats for them. That worked beautifully especially at night we would put a space heater in our bedroom set the thermostat to 68° in the space heater would kick on and off appropriately. Here's a link to the space heater thermostat. https://amzn.to/3xBaVHO The next day we hooked up and drove South to Winchester Virginia. But on the way we saw Lindt chocolate factory outlet on 81 South in Pennsylvania. So we had to stop and pick up some delicious chocolates. Then we pulled into our house location. Met our host hooked up to their 50 amp. We then headed out to Old Town Charleston Virginia and walked for a bit. Then we stopped at James Charles winery. After that we headed back down to Old Town and enjoyed some live music at the Wine Room. We reached out to our host to see if they wanted to meet us there. They did and we had a great time conversating with them. And didn't get to bed till near 1am. Typically we are in bed at 1030pm lol.The next day we headed to Sky Meadows State Park. Wow. They had the best trail marking system we have ever seen. At every intersection the color coded trails were listed with the level of difficulty. We hiked 4 miles and loved it. Afterwards we hit a gas station, bought our National Park Pass and then an Aldi's then back to the rig to relax. We have the next 2 nights booked at wineries via Harvest Hosts. However we started talking and we thought about the need to make a purchase at the wineries which we usually do a bottle of wine and we would have to drive out of the park to the winery then drive into the park the next day versus staying in a campground in Shenandoah National Park. The next morning we said goodbye to our hosts and headed south. Our goal for the day was to do hikes in Shenandoah National Park. The campgrounds are first come first serve so we decided that morning we would drive through Skyline Drive and stop in at the campgrounds to see if there was vacancy. And there was. We dumped and got set up. We went to the visitor center and got info on hikes. We then hiked to a view and enjoyed sandwiches and a glass of wine. The next day we did a 4 mile hike to Rapidan Camp. This was developed to be the "Camp David" by President Hoover. Then we did a 3 mile hike up Hawksbill Mtn. Which is the highest peak in the Shenandoah National Park at just over 4,000'. Then back to the rig. Talk with a couple in the next site then took out the grill and had a great meal. The next day we headed south through the Shenandoah National Park I'm about 3 hours to Wirtz VA. For the next two nights will be here at a boondock was welcome location that has 15 amp. The next day was a was a cold rain-filled day so while Trish went over to do laundry I recorded this episode. After today we will be stopping over in North Carolina to have dinner with one of the nurses I used to work with. Then we will be hitting a state park in North Carolina then out through Tennessee. So what do you do to help manage your stress? Weekly podcast about the mission and ministry of Bethel Lutheran Church, Winchester VA
Update on events and activities at Bethel Lutheran Church, Winchester VA. Also, Pastor Dave with a brief overview of the upcoming lesson for Sunday, January 16 (John 2: 2-11, The Wedding at Cana).
Today, Saturday November 27 Looking for Mercy Jude 1:20-21 “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” Shortly after my salvation experience in February 1971 at the Landmark Baptist Temple in Cincinnati Ohio, I clearly heard the calling of God upon my life for full-time Gospel ministry. I initially thought that it meant that I was to go to Africa as a missionary. As a kid growing up, with my dad in ministry, I never dreamed I would be a pastor of a local church because most of my childhood memories of my experiences in church were not very good ones. Several of the churches, that my dad pastored, voted him out as pastor, kicked us out of the church parsonage and left us looking for housing. We moved so often that I literally went to thirteen different schools by the time I was in the twelfth grade. But an amazing thing happened while I was attending Lynchburg Baptist College in Lynchburg Virginia and I started working for Dr. Jerry Falwell, visiting all the visitors that attended his Adult Sunday School Class and the services at Thomas Road Baptist Church! The Lord gave me a pastor's heart for the local church! So I was not surprised when Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church in Winchester Virginia called me to become their senior pastor upon my graduation from Bible College in June of 1975. Then over the next forty-six years I had the wonderful experience of leading hundreds of precious people to faith in Jesus Christ and watching their lives radically change just like my life did. But honestly, my greatest joy as a pastor was not their salvation experience, but being a part of their lives as they responded to the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, dedicating and surrendering their lives to walk with Jesus every day! And even today, after my leaving the position of being a senior pastor it is still my heart and joy to watch others build up their lives and grow to spiritual maturity! This "building process" in the Christian life of course, involves the Word of God, the Spirit of God, and prayer. I can't tell you how many times I've watched people who had a dramatic salvation experience, getting so excited about being saved, but because they would not discipline themselves to take the time to read their Bibles, pray, and faithfully attend church, it was wasn't long before they were soon running with their old crowd, and back in the bondage of their old life! Psalm 23 is the great Shepherd Psalm that begins by telling us about how as sheep, we have a Good Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who will lead us into green pastures and guide us to still waters to refresh and restore our souls. And when we trust and follow Him by faith, we are always provided for, satisfied, comforted and protected. But often, just like sheep, we get distracted and go astray. And Psalm 23 ends by reminding us, that even then, “His mercy and goodness will follow us all the days of lives…” Yes my friend, even today we need to be “looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ” that gives us the hope and assurance that we need to sustain us and pick us up when we do fail and go astray! If we will confess our sins and failures He will “forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Today, thank God for His goodness and mercy! God bless!

Two higher education administrators, Dr. Cameron McCoy, Provost at Shenandiah University in Winchester Virginia, and Dr. Michael Salvatore, Senior Vice-President at Kean University in Union New Jersey discuss the changing landscape in higher education. Dr. McCoy and Dr. Salvatore weigh in on innovations to retain students and discuss how higher education has pivoted to meet the needs of today's learners by moving away from the "Industrial Education Model" of education. Both leaders cited books that have helped mold their leadership and ideas about doing business: Deep Work by Cal Newport, Mini Habits: Smaller Habits, Bigger Results by Stephen Guise and books by Clay Christenson.

Smith, Jr. Agricultural Research and Extension Center for the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, (VA Tech) since 2004. Tony shared his views throughout the interview on past and present practices in Virginia winegrowing and his thoughts on what the future might hold. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE INTERVIEW: a). Tony describes how he was influenced by his Father who was a scientist to pursue a career in horticulture.b). mentions having a small vineyard, only 12 vines.c). He recounts how when he was going to school at Cornell and the position at Virginia Tech opened up his professor advised him he should probably pursue the position and finish his schooling later. Which he did.d). I asked him why pursue a career in viticulture in Virginia and not on the west coast and he shares his reasons for wanting to stay on the East Coast having been raised just 20 miles from Winchester VA where he now works.e). He further goes into why he pursued viticulture over enology.f). Tony gives his insights into what the future for Virginia winegrowing may look like including a comment that he believed in 2050 we might be growing grape varietals that don't even exist today. There is so much good information both history and potential future for winegrowing in this Episode that it is a must listen for anyone who is curious about what winegrowing in Virginia and the East really entails. — It is extremely important to release our loved ones and pets from the emotion of grief so that they can safely make it to the other side and move on to the next expression of their soul.” Valeria Teles interviews Joy Andreasen — the author of “Whispers From Another Room: A Mystic's Journey Into the World of Spirit” Joy Andreasen is a psychic medium, Shamanic Reiki energy healer, spiritual Consultant and teacher, and published author of three books. She has been a spiritual junkie her whole life, and sensed spirit at a very young age. However, due to her belief system, she did not begin to acknowledge or use her gift until adulthood. In her early thirties she began to use her gift within the umbrella of Christianity, but over time began to explore other belief systems and realized an innate knack for healing through nontraditional methods. Her clients report renewed hope, a greater sense of well-being, and often are able to move forward from limiting beliefs and behaviors after their sessions. She also has been able to assist clients in moving forward past grief and navigate difficult decisions after conversing with their deceased loved ones or Spiritual Guides. She hosts a monthly Zoom where she and the participants meditate as a group and send healing energy out into the world, allowing the Guides to share and direct the agenda. She sees clients by phone, Zoom and in person in Winchester Virginia where she resides with her husband and kitty. To learn more about Joy Andreasen and her work please visit: https://www.whispersofjoy.net/ — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.

We get down and dirty with two of Racing Virginia's young rising stars. Devin Brannon is a third-generation racer from Winchester, VA, who has had some great tussles on track with his dear ol' dad. And those have made for some great dinner table conversations. Brannon (8:45) is already a track champion, but his dirt dreams are much bigger. Chris Arnold has been dominant on the track this year. Normally he calls Virginia Motor Speedway home, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Arnold (23:15) has been taking checkered flags at Winchester (Va.) Speedway in 2020. For both of these racers, 2021 looks to be an even better year on track. Hosts Dave and Brandon dish on the NASCAR Championship races, as well. https://vurbl.com/station/9SZkrYOd6LQ/

Robert Keasler serves as Vice President for Administration and Finance Shenandoah University in Winchester Virginia, but he started about as far from higher education as he could manage. “I started in a textile mill… I ended up in textiles for five years or more,” says Keasler. “I ended up in higher education by happenstance as well.” He says it’s not his job to protect the assets of the university, rather to use those assets efficiently and effectively in service of the mission. That perspective has served him well in his higher education career. “We’re entering such an exciting period in our industry,” says Keasler. “It will be stressful. It will be difficult. But I don’t know that there’s been as much opportunity for all sorts of institutions as there used to be.”
