When something is in your literal blind spot, it's invisible to you, but your brain stitches together everything else around it to make you think that you're seeing a complete picture. Reality: Blind spot: Perception: We often use "blind spot" as a metaphor to gesture toward things we are unaware of, while also being at least somewhat unaware of our unawareness—we know that something fishy is going on, but we can't quite get our eyes on it. e.g. "I think I might have a blind spot when it comes to status dynamics." The thing about status dynamics, though, is that they aren't in one spot. There isn't a whole world that is being fully and accurately perceived, except for one blank space that's being glossed over. Instead, what's usually going on (at least in my experience) is that the person can see everything, but there's some crucial component of the picture that they are unable to process or comprehend. What this looks like, in practice, is an inability to distinguish two things which are very, very different, à la red-green color blindness: "Look," says Alexis. "Look at the beautiful contrast." Blake hesitates. "...you mean between the trees and the sky?" Being (metaphorically) color-blind to something can be deeply frustrating. You keep pushing the X button, and very different things keep happening. e.g. you are learning to play a Formula 1 racing simulator, and it feels like you did exactly the same thing on exactly the same curve both times, but one time you spun out and crashed and the other time you smoothly navigated right through. e.g. you are repeating back to the native French speaker exactly the sounds she said to you, and sometimes getting nods and smiles and other times getting sympathetic winces. e.g. you asked your romantic partner what you should have said, instead, to avoid this huge disagreement, and the words they wished you'd said are literally equivalent in meaning, that's the exact same sentiment, what the hell is going on, here? It's straightforwardly analogous to being literally color-blind, where you might try on one t-shirt, and hear snickers and giggles and see people trying not to laugh, but then you swap it out for a t-shirt that is almost exactly the same shade, you can barely even tell them apart, and suddenly everybody's all encouragement and compliments. They're the exact same shirt! They're practically indistinguishable! Yes—to you. But other people make distinctions you do not. Whether because they've got slightly different physical or mental structures, or because they've spent a lot of time focusing on a domain and developed substantial sensitivity to it, or because they came from a subculture where those distinctions were obvious and omnipresent. (And you make distinctions that are invisible to them, most likely! That seem to them capricious and arbitrary, if not entirely made up!) Trigger: Notice that someone is being weirdly intense about a meaningless distinction. Action: Ask "if they were perceiving some facet of reality that I am insensitive to (rather than just making mountains out of molehills), what might it be?" Today I’m going to help you with something that many women struggle with, embracing your value. Do you know the value that you provide? Are you truly convinced of the value that you provide? If the answer is “no” or “I’m not sure,” then that is what is causing your audience not to recognize your value either. They can’t see your value if you don’t see it first! This is an exercise to help you recognize and embrace your value. It’s also going to help you with your messaging. Way too many of us focus on the features and benefits of what we provide. But our audience really cares about the outcome and transformation. For this exercise, we’re going to focus on one result or outcome that you provide. You can go back though and do this exercise for as many results or outcomes as you offer. Action - Think of 1 result that your audience receives from working with you. What do you help your clients do? Example: I help my clients grow their audience. If you promote this response alone your audience will not fully understand the breadth of the value that we provide. And if they don’t fully understand it, they’re definitely not going to invest in it. So let’s go deeper! Action – Ask the question, “So that what?” Example: I help my clients grow their audience so that they can get the right leads in the door. Now we’ve gone a little deeper, but we need to keep hashing it out. Action – Again, ask the question, “So that what?” Example: I help my clients grow their audience so that they can get the right leads in the door so that they can get dream clients more quickly. Even deeper, but let’s keep going. Action – Again, ask the question, “So that what?” Example: I help my clients grow their audience so that they can get the right leads in the door so that they can get dream clients more quickly so that they can make more money. Does this really show the full value of what you do? You may be tempted to stop when you get to “more money” but I think you can always go a little deeper. What does more money allow them to do? Action – Again, ask the question, “So that what?” Example: I help my clients grow their audience so that they can get the right leads in the door so that they can get dream clients more quickly so that they can make more money so that they can hire someone in their business so that they can take time off for a vacation so that they can spend quality time with their family. Do you see how I went from growing an audience to spending quality time with family? The end result is what is important. Don’t miss an opportunity to paint a picture of the future for your audience. You want them to see what is possible for them if they invest in your support. This emotional connection is what’s needed for people to take action. Coaching, Mentoring or Training - What's the Difference? On previous episodes we have discussed Mentoring in Sales (42), we have also discussed Coaching vs Training (79). This week we discuss all three approaches in the context of personal development and improving capabilities. We share our thoughts on the differences between Coaching, Mentoring, and Training, why one approach may be better than another, and when it might make sense to combine methods. Questions Addressed What's the difference between Coaching & Mentoring? How do you know if you need a coach or a mentor? How important is it to be coachable? How do I know if I should work with a coach? How can we connect with Catalyst Sale to discuss coaching? How do you know if Training, Coaching, or Mentoring is a better fit? Key Takeaways Coaching tends to be focused on the current task, or skill. The coach and the person receiving the coaching, are looking at ways to optimize. Mentoring tends to consider the bigger picture. There may be more ambiguity. It is less about the skill, more about the longer term objective. Good mentors should also be able to coach. Coaches, on the other hand, may not be good mentors. When considering skills improvement, coaching may be a better solution. i.e. cooking. When working on improving your skills in the kitchen, a coach can help you by being in the kitchen. The coach should be there, with you, and provide coaching in real time. Coaches look for the subtle changes that can make a significant impact - they look for the details. Mentoring is a bit more philosophical. The relationship between mentee and mentor is critical. Coaching may be a bit more tactical. The relationship between the coach and the player is not critical. Being coachable is crucial if you want to develop your skills. Ask yourself, if you are not coachable, if you have a big ego, how will you grow? It is important to have an open mind when working with a coach. You should have a solid understanding of where your deficiencies are. You may need a coach in an area, but you may be blind to it. This is where a mentor, a manager, a colleague, or others can make a recommendation. One way to overcome your blind spots is to shift your perspective. Fit with a mentor is really important. When it comes to coaching, the fit is not the focus, the results are more important. Skill development should lead to something With a coach, you should see direct skill improvement. With mentoring, am I moving in the right direction? Training tends to be more structured. Most cases 1:many, however a 1:1 approach may make sense in a training environment. If your objective is to "Learn something new" - Training may be a better solution Coaching tends to be task-based or skill based. 1:1 really works well with coaching. If your objective is to "Improve a specific skill" - Coaching may be the best approach Mentoring tends to be more open, less structured, relationship driven, future-focused, and the relationship will evolve. If your objective is to "Improve being/focus" - Finding and working with a mentor may work best As an example, when thinking about swimming - training works well at first, comfort around the pool, coaching might be specific to hand position in a given stroke, mentoring might be more focused on nutrition, pre-race prep, and mindset.
