¿Fue tan pionero Bebu Silvetti cuando grabó en España “Lluvia de Primavera (Spring Rain)”? emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Michaela Coel twice, originally episode 129 from 2016-12-14, and episode 238 from 2018-11-07. Below are the original writeups for context - enjoy this double feature look back in to the past with Michaela!–––––––––––––––––––––––––Part 1:From her early days knocking around Tower Hamlets in a pentecostal upbringing, and how a psalm triggered her interests in poetry, Michaela gets deep into what added up to her present day self, as a multi-talented and well respected TV heavy hitter - from her take on reading and books in general, to spirituality and where she's at with it all now, drama school, reality TV, Uber and its complex personal social code of conduct, how she was discovered on stage, right through to where we find her now as star of 'Aliens', 'Chewing Gum' (and writer of, of course) and 'Black Mirror'... A perfect and full on satisfying listen so go on and get on that immediately!Part 2:What exactly HASN'T she been doing since she was last on? Good lord… Michaela is unquestionably smashing it right now (and has been for a minute), starring in two Black Mirror episodes, feature film Been So Long, BBC drama Black Earth Rising and a lil' indie grindhouse flick called Star Wars: The Last Jedi, no biggie. We can only dream of what she'll be unveiling when we hopefully see her next time on here! A bunch of awesome ground is covered of course, in not that long, including her humble but confident, responsive social media outlook, carving her own paths growing up, the intentions behind any given script, not wasting time on things that don't mean much to you, the hit series Black Earth Rising and the much loved director, heroes and villains, learning about Africa and all the education that came with Black Earth Rising, TV license and the value of it, John Goodman, handling heavier scenes and TONS tons more! Jorma Kaukonen Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Let your fingers do the running to the play button. Please! One of the greatest, funnest, most illuminating conversations I've had the privilege to share, Jorma Kaukonen, iconic legend, musical hero, rock god, (I mean, come on!) exceeded all expectations and then some. From early days in Pakistan with one pop 45 to Ricky Nelson, and Buddy Holly, 15-year-old returning expat Jorma, took up guitar and soon was in his first band, The Triumphs, with bandmate, Jack Casady, still his bandmate and best friend today, 65+ years later. Beyond amazing. And the fact that they were rehearsing moments before Jorma and I went Live blows my mind. A testament to their ongoing greatness. We talked about Antioch, and not exactly being encouraged to return. Janis, and The Typewriter Tape, San Francisco, Monterey, Hendrix, Jerry, Marty, Paul, Grace, and Jorma's nickname that became the Jefferson Airplane - his invite to Jack Casady. Psychedelia, Surrealistic Pillow, the making of––in my top 5, and it was made in less than two weeks! Woodstock - getting in and getting out and Grace Slick's unforgettable - “Good Morning, People.” What was unforgettable for Jorma. Goosebumps for me. Hot Tuna, how and why it started and continues to flourish. Jorma and Jack! The recent end of Hot Tuna Electric - the why - simple - not totally undoable. The Book, Been So Long - chock full of golden nuggets like those shared here. Years of teaching and concerts culminating in The Fur Peace Ranch, now sold, but will be picking up in Jorma and Vanessa's new locale. To keep up with the indefatigable Mr. Kaukonen https://jormakaukonen.com The cherry on top of this chat that seemed to fly by in an instant was Jorma indulging this rabid Airplane/Surrealistic Pillow fan, playing his Embryonic Journey, with a fab Jack sidebar (see the Live comments) and then a gorgeous, Take Your Time, for his daughter. This is one for the books. I'll cherish it always. Because Jorma's so important to me it was important that I do right by him. So grateful it was so much fun. I'm gonna be smiling for a long time to come. From September 17, 2017: Jorma Kaukonen, founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, talked about his career and his memoir Been So Long.ABOUT JORMA KAUKONENAs a founding member of two legendary bands, Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna, Jorma Kaukonen has achieved incredible success. A member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy recipient, Kaukonen has played with many well-known and historic musicians, including his contemporaries Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan. For the first time, he is sharing his story in BEEN SO LONG: My Life and Music. The book will also include an exclusive five track companion album. The tracks include live recordings of "Been So Long," "Song for the High Mountain," "Broken Highway," "River of Time," and "In My Dreams."With a foreword by Grace Slick and an afterword by bandmate Jack Casady, BEEN SO LONG is an intimate portrait of an artist who was at the forefront of Psychedelic Rock and has since become one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music, blues, and Americana. Kaukonen's memoir reveals the stories behind the songs, lessons from a life in the music industry, and his reflections on a remarkable decades-long career.BEEN SO LONG charts not only Jorma's association with the bands that made him famous but goes into never-before-told details about his addiction and recovery, his troubled first marriage and still-thriving second, the creation of the Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp, which he operates with his wife, Vanessa, and more. Interspersed with diary entries, personal correspondence, and song lyrics, this memoir is as unforgettable and inspiring as Jorma's music itself.
Opnåede internationalt anerkendelse for 100 år siden. Tilrettelagt af Claus Vittus Musikken : It´s Been So Long og Mountain Air af Cody Francis.
I 2018 kom forsættelsen Kort over Paradis. Following a successful career in fashion journalism, Lisa pursued her passions for cinema and costume by switching to design, styling for commercials and short films, which ultimately led to costume design for film, TV and theatre.Lisa shares her early experiences, her love of storytelling through watching movies, and describes how her respect for the craft of costuming is expressed in the productions she has worked on, which include CROWHURST, BEEN SO LONG and CHIMERICA (C4) and yet to be broadcast SMALL AXE directed by Steve McQueen. Deconstructing her rigorous methods of research and presentation, Lisa also illuminates how this crucial process helps a performer find their character’s voice within the overall dramatic and visual narrative.www.lisaduncan.co.uk www.angelsbehindtheseams.com

In the reviews...Michaela Coel features twice with I May Destroy You and Been So Long. I spoke about the Disclosure documentary and No Stupid Questions' episode titled 'What does it mean to be a hard worker?'. The Lofty Thought was...surviving racism. I shared my attempt to develop a holistic strategy to address the effect of anti-black racism and spoke about the harm that racism inflicts along with some tools that have or haven't worked for me to minimise that harm. greetings and apologies for the time between episodes! the music industry (among with many other creative industries) facing a severe downturn because of the recent pandemic and the general deluge of traumatic news has made me reflect more on smaller, more understated artistic triumphs as an antidote. so this episode i escape the present by talking about some timeless music from the recent past: the unassuming yet grandiose singer-songwriter Nina Nastasia, and particularly her (in my opinion) best albums The Blackened Air and Run To Ruin. things discussed in the podcast: Chris Dahlen's Pitchfork review of The Blackened Air: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/5713-the-blackened-air/ and Run To Ruin: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/5712-run-to-ruin/ John Peel archive video on Nina Nastasia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWNjoa4nLYo Electrical Audio "Crap/Not Crap" thread on Nina Nastasia: https://www.electricalaudio.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=663 Nina Nastasia's music on the dreaded Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1llUGXhBESnmaCxpBV4zwe recent track featuring Nina Nastasia: https://danielknox.bandcamp.com/track/the-poisoner-feat-nina-nastasia Phosphorescent "Been So Long" cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZrcNZBKnic music included in this episode: "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn and John (2006) by Nina Nastasia: "Oblivion" and "Roadkill" from Dogs (2000) "This Is What It Is", "Rosemary", and "Been So Long" from The Blackened Air (2002) "Superstar", "We Never Talked", "I Say That I Will Go", "You Her and Me", and "On Teasing" from Run To Ruin (2003) "Our Day Trip" from On Leaving (2006) "Outlaster" from Outlaster (2010) title music as always is "Museum of Agony" from the PS2 game Stretch Panic by Norio Hanzawa

In furtherance of our Legacy series that honors the late Kim English, I wanted to cover the flipside to Kim's career. Ms. English was originally from Chicago and like many famous artists that preceded her, has roots in her hometown church singing gospel. House music's roots are embedded in gospel music and Kim — with her smoky alto — was a natural fit. Her voice is very much reminiscent of Toni Braxton and Anita Baker. In fact, she re-recorded "Been So Long" from Anita's Grammy-winning album "Rapture" — and a remix by Wamdue is included here. Her original recording of "Nite Life" with Ten City is what got her noticed. The song is a classic staple in the House Music annals and has been re-worked a multitude of times over the years. With interest from Masters at Work (Louie Vega and Kenny Dope), Nervous Records picked the track up and signed Kim to a recording deal. Throughout that deal, Kim had a total of eight #1 club hits on the Billboard charts. On one end, you had the circuit-driven throbbing beats from some of the biggest names in DJ production such as Razor N Guido, Michael T. Diamond, Hex Hector, Junior Vasquez, Thunderpuss and more. On the flip side, she was remixed by some of the most prominent House Music producers as well including David Morales, Masters At Work, Todd Edwards, John Cutler, Mousse T., E-Smoove, ATFC and more. These remixes are the primary focus of this second set. With so many mixes to choose from, I took this set towards a heavier house sound than my previous effort. It begins with a couple of Soulful House tracks and then escalates from there. If you want her true Soulful House experience, then the original House Sessions I created for her is still up on the site. It is with love and respect that Party Favorz honors the late Kim English in this final set. Given the evolving nature of club music today, her talent will be sorely missed. RIP. From the publisher: From the man who made a name for himself as a founding member and lead guitarist of Jefferson Airplane comes a memoir that offers a rare glimpse into the heart and soul of a musical genius―and a vivid journey through the psychedelic era in America. “Music is the reward for being alive,” writes Jorma Kaukonen in this candid and emotional account of his life and work. “It stirs memory in a singular way that is unmatched.” In a career that has already spanned a half century―one that has earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, among other honors―Jorma is best known for his legendary bands Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna. But before he won worldwide recognition he was just a young man with a passion and a dream. Been So Long is the story of how Jorma found his place in the world of music and beyond. The grandson of Finnish and Russian-Jewish immigrants whose formative years were spent abroad with his American-born diplomat father, Jorma channeled his life experiences―from his coming-of-age in Pakistan and the Phillipines to his early gigs with Jack Casady in D.C. to his jam sessions in San Francisco with Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and other contemporaries―into his art in unique and revelatory ways. Been So Long charts not only Jorma’s association with the bands that made him famous but goes into never-before-told details about his addiction and recovery, his troubled first marriage and still-thriving second, and more. Interspersed with diary entries, personal correspondence, and song lyrics, this memoir is as unforgettable and inspiring as Jorma’s music itself. Martin’s interview with Jorma Kaukonen was recorded on September 17, 2018 (a mere ten days before fellow Jefferson Airplane founding member Marty Balin died on September 27, 2018).

Been So Long is the title of Jorma’s recent autobiography available from St. Martin’s Press. The memoir is filled with delicious stories from this one time Jefferson Airplane guitarist, who now, 77 years young continues to perform with his pal Jack Casady in Hot Tuna, and as a soloist. Jorma’s life is fascinating and his anecdotes match the great stories of his very early days to more contemporary ones. I should mention that we recorded this interview, a week before Jefferson Airplane co-founder Marty Balin’s passing. I can tell you, that he was exuberant to talk about his book and story even before we started to record. You can learn more about Jorma at his website, which also houses his blog at jormakaukonen.com. My guest this month is guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jorma Kaukonen. Jorma grew up in Washington, D.C., where he first turned to the guitar. He lived in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early '60s, playing backup to Janis Joplin in local clubs. In 1965, he became a founding member of Jefferson Airplane which soared to fame in 1967, and his distinctive guitar-playing was crucial to its sound with signature solos and parts in classics like "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love". With bassist Jack Casady, Jorma formed a spinoff duo from the group in 1970 called Hot Tuna, and this became his primary musical vehicle after the Airplane broke up in 1973. Jorma's fingerstyle guitar playing was a big part of my musical education, and introduced me to the music of Reverend Gary Davis, Blind Blake and many more. His acoustic playing in the Airplane was a real eye opener for me too, with pieces like "Embryonic Journey". He has just released a great auto-biography called "Been So Long", but I thought it would be fun to hear some of his stories coming from his own mouth, so here we go! Enjoy my conversation with Jorma Kaukonen, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!

However, what's often overlooked is her incredibly diverse musical palate that stretches into genres like Soulful House, Gospel House, and even Jazz House. It's an eclectic body of work that shows her as not just a dance floor diva, but as an artist whose music transcends categories. Starting with "It Makes A Difference," remixed by Kyle Smith, you're greeted with a soulful interpretation that does more than just move your feet; it warms your soul. The intricate vocal delivery and emotional resonance underline that Kim English was not just a one-trick pony but an artist with depth. "Been So Long" (a remake of the Anita Baker classic) with its Wamdue Remix, takes a step deeper into the soulful territories. It evokes feelings of longing, beautifully encapsulating the emotions that often go hand-in-hand with the dance floor euphoria. Frankie Feliciano's work on "Time for Love" and "Missing You" go a step further by incorporating elements that make you feel like you've stepped into a sophisticated, intimate jazz club. "Tomorrow" in the Todd Edwards remix, transports us back to a dance atmosphere but in a way that's markedly different from her larger-than-life anthems. It's softer, nuanced, yet still danceable, capturing the mood of tomorrow's promise. Unspeakable Joy in the Maurice Joshua remix makes us realize that Kim English had the ability to turn her songs into gospel experiences, capable of lifting an entire dance floor into a spiritual awakening. That duality is a testament to her artistry. Jonny Montana's take on "Supernatural" dives into Jazz House, which seems apt for a song of that title. It's the kind of track that might make you feel like you're in an intimate, smoky jazz bar, transported by Kim's voice. And speaking of Jazz, "Love That Jazz" in its Extended Vocal Mix is a delightful foray into the Jazz House sub-genre. With "Higher Things," the Jazz N' Groove Prime Time Club Mix creates an uplifting atmosphere that seems designed to elevate our spirits as well as our dance moves. What's even more astonishing is how all these different versions come from DJs and producers who are experts in diverse genres—from Maurice Joshua's soulful grooves to Todd Edwards' unique garage flair and Frankie Feliciano's jazz-influenced beats. In summary, Kim English was not just a diva who gave us anthems for the dance floor but a versatile artist whose music served as a soundtrack for various moods and settings. Whether you were in a jazz lounge,
