Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews

During the pandemic, international vocalist Gary Williams decided to retrain himself to become a professional photographer, building on existing street photographic skills and interests that he'd developed touring the world as a musician. During this time, closer to home in the UK he found Camden Passage, a charming, narrow street in Islington, London, known for its antique shops, vintage quirky boutiques, and market stalls. This place was to become Gary's photographic playground where over a number of years he befriended the shoppers and shopkeepers of a unique famous street, eventually producing a book featuring those he met called The Litte Book of Camden Passage. Today he talks about designing, sequencing and producing a book, plus choosing a publisher. From the mailbag, Bill Marriott finds that photography can culturally connect in a magical way, Peter Upton is in a race against time to photograph some famous landmarks before the rising tides lay claim to them, Chris Hughes is embracing his inner Daidō Moriyama, Harriet Langridge has some street photography thoughts and I have some unexpected Scottish news so pack your travel bag, your camera bag with a fully charged camera. There's a Shutter Sync and last opportunity to join in with August's photo assignment set by Emily Renier. Our guest this week has over 30 years of hospitality experience in international operations, capital markets, and strategic development. Please welcome to the show, CEO and Owner of Olson Kundig, Hemanshu Parwani!Hemanshu joins Host Dan Ryan to dive into the importance of showing up with intent. Hemanshu shares why designers should chase meaningful work rather than all out growth, the need to take care of those who take care of others, and how mountaineering inspires his work. Takeaways: Hospitality for many, comes close to being a religion. Built out of a devotion to caring for others, hospitality is about how you make someone feel in a space, and how you build memories with them. When in a space, people are either thinking about what memories this space reminds them of, or how the space will build new memories for them. Building spaces around the formation of memories will leave guests with unforgettable experiences. A guaranteed way to make your guests remember your experiences is by making them feel as if they were one of your group. Allowing your guests to feel like they can be their authentic selves creates satisfaction. The ethos of being an innkeeper is taking care of people. Care extends not just to your guests, but the people who are taking care of your guests. A team that is well cared for will provide even better service to guests. Everything you do should be with intent. Knowing why you are doing something is the foundation to any action. Good design comes from an intimate understanding of why you are designing. While growth is good, it should not be the end all to your pursuits. Chase aspirational, meaningful work in design, and growth will follow. Instead of simply seeking to grow, seek a challenge that forces you to work creatively.Mutual learning is an important aspect of design, and helps you be more intentional about what you do. Keeping an open mind and showing genuine interest in other's work allows you to learn quickly. Quote of the Show:“Growth is not something that we are chasing. We are chasing aspirational, meaningful work in design.” - Hemanshu ParwaniLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hemanshuparwani/ Website: https://olsonkundig.com/ Shout Outs:1:22 - ALIS: https://www.burba.com/ALIS 18:20 - Bill Marriott: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jwmarriottjr/ 20:49 - Harvard Business School: https://www.hbs.edu/ 21:56 - Ian Schrager: https://www.instagram.com/ianschrager/ 21:58 - Adrian Zecha39:59 - Bashar Wali: https://www.linkedin.com/in/basharwali/ 48:55 - Barry Sternlicht49:29 - W Hotels: https://w-hotels.marriott.com/ 50:02 - 1 Hotels: https://www.1hotels.com/ 51:18 - HD Expo: https://hdexpo.hospitalitydesign.com/ 52:24 - Populus: https://populusdenver.com/ 53:06 - Sonu Shivdasani: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sonu-shivdasani-obe-a46217/ 54:34 - Bermanfalk: https://www.bermanfalk.com/ 59:07 - Ed Viesturs: https://www.instagram.com/ed_viesturs/?hl=en 1:02:05 - Aggie Zamir: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aggie-zamir-a750982b/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everybody, and welcome to another episode of The Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree. Thank you so much for joining me. We are continuing our Suite Spot: Spotlight series. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series podcast series that we've done on The Suite Spot. Because of all the places we've traveled, we've gone up to New York, down to Miami Beach, and now we are going to beautiful sunny Mexico with a great guest, Christopher Calabrese, general manager and vice president of the Marriott Cancun Collection. Christopher, welcome to the Suite Spot. Christopher Calabrese: Thank you, Ryan. Good to be with you. Ryan Embree: Yeah, and we talked off screen how very jealous of where you're at. You've got a wonderful property over there, which we're gonna talk all about. But before we do that, I always love, we live and work in such a wonderful industry, Christopher, with tons of backgrounds and stories. Tell us a little bit about your journey, your hospitality journey, and what led you to the Marriott Cancun Collection. Christopher Calabrese: Well, I've been with Marriott for 52 years now, which a lot of people don't believe, but it's actually the truth. I've had the pleasure to work with all three of the generations of the Marriott family, starting with JW Marriott Sr., Bill Marriott, of course, who was our ex-chairman of the board, and now our David Marriott, who of course is the grandson of the founder and he is now our chairman, executive chairman, as they call it these days. So it's been an honor to work with all three generations. I started with the hot shops, which was our sort of founding company of restaurants. That's how Marriott got started in the business. And most of my background, or let's say half of my background to date so far has been food and beverage. I then became a regional director of operations in Mid-Atlantic. And I wanted to explore the world. I wanted to see international, I wanted to be a general manager. And so at that time I expressed an interest in Latin America and they said, well, you don't really speak Spanish, so we don't, we can't really put you there at this time. So I said, okay, well what might you have? They said, well, we have a job for you in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia as general manager. I said, I don't speak Arabic. And they said, yeah, but you know, your type of personality will fit in nicely in in that area, in that part of the world. So if you'd like it, let's do it. We can fly you in if you want to have a look. I said, no, that's okay. Let's just go do a one-way ticket and I'll work out there for a couple of years and hopefully one day get back to this part of the world. And, and sure enough, that's what happened. And so that's kind of my journey International. And then I moved to Puerto Vallarta as general manager of the Marriott there. And then I've been in Cancun the rest of my career, but I've moved 26 times with this company. So, um, I know what it's like to see different parts of the world or at least parts of the US for the short time that I was there, half of my career.

"If you have a good way to do things and everybody in your organization does it, you're going to get more business because people are going to love you because it's very consistent." - Lee Cockerell Training without enforcement is like building a grand castle on a weak foundation—it simply won't hold up. Jody and I have a great conversation on the importance of enforcing your training and creating a lasting impact in your business. Organizations should understand the significance of tying together the three pillars of success: training, testing, and, of course, enforcement. Bill Marriott taught me invaluable lessons during my time at Marriott. He emphasized that excellence can only be achieved through training, education, and enforcement. To be clear, enforcement doesn't mean being harsh or oppressive. It's about instilling discipline and accountability. During our conversation Jody and I also touch upon the essential role of enforcement in maintaining brand consistency and building trust. Brands like Chick-fil-A and FedEx excel because they consistently deliver on their promises. They leave no room for doubt or disappointment. Whether it's a sandwich or an overnight package, the experience remains the same, creating a reliable brand that customers can count on. At Disney, where I had the privilege of leading an incredible team of 70,000 employees, enforcing the training of every individual was paramount. From something as seemingly small as a well-polished name tag to upholding our brand's promise of creating magic, every detail mattered. Without proper enforcement, Disney could easily lose its reputation and become just another forgettable carnival. Make sure to listen to this episode to hear more about how enforcing your training can elevate your organization and deliver unparalleled customer experiences. Remember, it's not about being mean; it's about creating a culture of excellence, where every employee understands their role and is empowered to contribute their magic. Today, I am presenting an encore performance of an epic interview, originally aired right here, on February 17th, 2016, when Paul Segreto and I were still co-hosting the podcast.  On that day, we had the good fortune to speak with an amazing franchising luminary, who also just passed, two weeks and three days ago.  I am speaking of course of the iconic Jerry Darnell.  Jerry left us on October 10th following complications from of all things, a brain injury.  What makes this so ironic, as you will hear during this interview, is that so much of what Jerry was known for, was the sharpness of his mind.  Jerry possessed the inane ability to recall and recount the most finite details of some of the legendary experiences of his career, life and conversations, with some of franchising's greats.   As you will hear, Jerry's life had intersections with such well knowns as Bill Marriott, Jack Nicklaus, Fred DeLuca David McKinnon and many more great and emerging franchise pros, during his storied career.  For a guy with a mind as sharp as his, to be taken from us prematurely was bad enough… but that it was the result of a brain injury that he suffered from taking a fall, makes this loss, almost surreal.

How to Handle a Team Member Resignation

Every organization has team members resign. Some of the people who leave are popular. Some of them fill an important role in the organization.  How you handle the resignation will have an impact on other employees.  Begin by telling the right people in the right order about the resignation. Doing so will eliminate the wrong story getting into the rumor mill. Within a couple of hours, everyone who needs to know should know. Then you can let other team members know.  Communicate quickly and keep it positive.  At Disney, I had senior executives leave the company for better opportunities. I didn't want them to leave, but people are going to do what is best for them and their careers.  Don't burn bridges. Always keep it positive whether you are the one leaving or someone left behind.  When I left Marriott, I told Bill Marriott first. Then I talked to my direct boss. I even helped them work on transitioning a new person into my role.  Marriott treated me well over the years. When I left, I wanted to treat them well, too. And I did not take any people with me to Disney, even though there were people who wanted the opportunity to join me at Euro Disney.  Remember, your career does not revolve around a single company. And you shouldn't expect anyone else to have their career revolve around your organization.

I started my hospitality career in 1964 working at a Hilton Hotel. This episode was recorded in Hilton in Yakima, WA.  In 1973, I begin working for Marriott.  When I started my career with Marriott, many of my friends thought I was crazy to take a job with such a small company. "That company is never going to be anything", they said. Now, Marriott is the largest hotel company in the world with 6,500 hotels. When I joined them in 1973, they had only 32 hotels.  With only 32 hotels, Bill Marriott used to stop by the hotel often back then. When you walked with Mr. Marriott through a hotel, he would show you how you can do better. He was a gentleman and he made all of us feel special.  You don't have to be Bill Marriott to make people feel special.  You don't have to be a VIP to treat other people like they are important.   Start a conversation. Ask questions. Show people they are doing a good job. Give them tips on how to do better.

If you are getting bad service in a restaurant, the problem is the General Manager, not the waiter.  If you see dirty bathrooms, don't blame the guy who cleans them, the problem is the General Manager.  If you find problems showing up like this in your organization, poor service or lack of attention to details, you either need more clarity on what you expect, better training, or you need to fire people who can't meet expectations.  The leader sets the tone, expectations, and how the show we put on every day will be executed.  But too often, the manager doesn't even know what is going on because he doesn't check. He doesn't have a checklist to make sure processes are followed. He doesn't check bathrooms to make sure they are cleaned. Let me tell you if a manager doesn't check on standards people will know. When the manager doesn't check employees will not follow through.  If you want to know the truth about what happens in your organization, check when people don't expect you to be there. This is how you can find how your organization really operates.  When I worked for Marriott, we never got ready when we knew Bill Marriott came to visit. We were always ready. It's better to get some criticism from Bill Marriott than to have employees think you only cleaned up the hotel when he was coming to visit.  You shouldn't get ready for an important guest. You should be ready for every guest, no matter who they are. My book, Creating Magic, can help get you there.

As a leader, one of your top priorities is to be available for staff members to see you.  When I was at Disney World, I made it clear anyone could come and see me. If they were not getting their problem solved at the local level, the could bring it to me.  My responsibility was to get things right. Every cast member should have a work environment where they felt comfortable and safe. If an issue came to me, I wasn't looking for someone to blame, I only wanted to take care of the problem.  Word began to spread that Lee Cockerell would take care of it if you had an issue.  Cast members had several ways to get in touch with me. This was how I kept up with the responsibility of creating a culture people wanted to be a part of.  Bill Marriott told me, "When in doubt, go in favor of the employee." Over time, this is how you build trust. Sure, someone may take advantage of you every once in a while. But don't punish everyone because someone might take advantage of you. Take care of the people first. Then take care of the paper. Make yourself available to staff.  Believe it or not, the first step of making yourself available for staff is to get organized. You have to have your time under control so you can devote yourself to your biggest priorities like making yourself available.

Reflecting on the Year and Getting Ready for Next Year Looking back on the year and preparing for the upcoming year is a practice that many of us consider this time of year.  Some wait until the beginning of the year, some start around October/November.  Reflection is critical, it provides an opportunity to evaluate and enjoy success, consider opportunities for improvement, and determine focus for the following year. This week on the podcast we talk about the importance of reflection, establishing goals, measuring, and iteration.  Questions Addressed Why is it important to reflect? How do you set goals & reflect? How have you performed against goals in the past year? When you set yourself up for the year, identify goals, how do you plan for opportunities that you are not aware of? If we are going to fall short of our goals for the year, how do we adjust late in the year? How important is it to focus on things outside of sales? (i.e. fitness, family) What else should we be looking at as we wrap up the year? Key Takeaways This is a great time to ask yourself the question - "Of the goals, I set at the beginning of the year - how many of them have I accomplished?" Establishing and evaluating goals/performance in the context of Mind, Body, Finances, Family.  Here are some questions I ask. Did I do what I said I was going to do? What did I add to my list over the course of the year? Where did I fail & where did I succeed most?  What patterns can I identify, and how might they apply to the next year? Evaluating the year from a personal perspective. There were some good things, and some not so good things, but I continue to move forward. The importance of building the pipeline is a lesson that was reinforced. One question I like to ask is "What's the worst thing that can happen?" you can also look at the alternative of this - "What's the best thing that can happen? Don't let the jackpot events influence your strategic planning. At some point, you may need to shift the mindset to focus on the future.  Mind & Body come into play - if you are not healthy, it is hard to do the work. Your priorities will change with the seasons of your life. This will evolve. Balance is important. Bill Marriott story conveyed by Lee Cockerell - "You know why I do not have any problems at work? It's because I don't have any problems at home." What can we do as we prepare for the next year? Think about your buckets. Identify the KPIs that help you determine if you are making progress in these areas. Continue to evaluate performance & the buckets throughout the year. (Time, Balance, Things you can do to make an impact on success) Be ok with letting go.  Sometimes it makes sense to exit. Simplify by taking things away, not by adding. Hello, and welcome to MACTattack, a short series of podcasts about podcasting, and whether it has a future for knowledge management. Your MACTattack hosts are Jennifer Flynn, Nikki Van Dusen, and Wayne Williams. Visit us at http://mactattack.podbean.com. In episode one, we introduce our topic, explain what a podcast is, and look at some organizations that are using podcasting for knowledge management. Introduction Knowledge management is a set of techniques and practices that facilitate the flow of knowledge into and within an organization. Early knowledge management initiatives focused a great deal on technological solutions. In many cases, the resultant information management systems were at worst counter-productive, and at best, simply expensive. As knowledge management efforts progress, organizations have been examining the people and culture and how the work is organized and structured, not just technological solutions. Web 2.0 technologies are enticing for knowledge management on both fronts: they provide powerful alternatives to expensive, proprietary software, and they enhance creativity, information sharing, collaboration and functionality. One of these new technologies is podcasting. Does podcasting have a place in an organization's knowledge management strategy? If so, how can it be of support? In this podcast series, we will look at podcasting to support knowledge management in organizations. In our first podcast, we start by explaining what a podcast is (and what it isn't), then we provide some case examples of how organizations are using podcasting for knowledge management. Then, in our second episode, we build a theoretical background for why podcasting might have a future in knowledge management, and we'll share some considerations about successfully integrating KM podcasting into an organization. What is a podcast? The word "podcast" is a portmanteau of the words “iPod” and “broadcast.” It refers to a series of audio or video digital-media files distributed online by syndicated download to portable media players and personal computers (“Podcast,” 2008). This is what differentiates podcasts from other audio and video media. For example, a podcast differs from a webcast in that the latter streams from the Internet, which requires the user to be connected while playing, and the former has a persistent site that can synchronize to a portable multimedia device, such as an MP3 player (Shim, Shropshire, Park, Harris, & Campbell, 2007). Also, a podcast differs from other MP3 files through the distribution method. Podcasts can be distributed to subscribers through an XML-based format known as RSS, or “really simple syndication.” Users subscribe to their desired media feeds through media aggregator software such as iTunes. When updates appear on subscribed sites, the “podcatcher” software automatically downloads the relevant content in the prescribed media form (Ractham & Zhang, 2006, p. 315). Like other files for use on portable media devices, most podcasts are MP3s. An MP3 is a compressed audio format, making for relatively small file sizes. Apple iPods will also support enhanced podcasts, or MP4s, which have extra features such as pictures and chapters with browsable titles. A third format, which is arguably its own medium, is a video podcast, or "vodcast." This is an M4V file, also playable on an iPod, and, like regular video, captures moving images and sound for playback. People and organizations are podcasting about virtually every topic. Whatever your interest, you only need to browse iTunes to get a taste of the literally millions of podcasts available for downloading and consuming at your convenience. According to a recent Edison Research study, podcasting is on the rise, with podcasts now reaching 18 per cent of the US population ("Podcast Consumer Revealed 2008"). Based on data on sales of portable digital music players and high-speed Internet penetration, researchers predicted that the US podcast audience would climb from 840,000 in 2005 to 56,000,000 by 2010 (Gilbert, 2005). However, more than one business initiative has failed when the only reason was "everyone is doing it." Podcasting for knowledge management is a much narrower application. KM podcasting in practice In order for knowledge management to be effective, the techniques and practices must support overall strategic outcomes (Wright, 2004). According to Wright (2004), "there is no inherent benefit of facilitating a flow of knowledge unless this flow serves the mission and goals of an organization" (p. 4). Several organizations are successfully using podcasts to capture knowledge, whether embrained, encoded, embodied, embedded or encultured (Wright, 2001, after Collins, 1993; Lam, 2000; and Blackler, 1995), in ways that directly serve their mission and goals. IBM: embrained knowledge For example, IBM posted its first podcast in the summer of 2005 with a series aimed at sharing its researchers' views about the evolution of technology (Cowley, 2005). IBM's corporate podcast team also began publishing podcasts internally in an attempt to educate their employees about podcasting specifically, and to encourage them to adopt podcasting for internal communication. Today, IBM has seven available podcast feeds to which a user can subscribe. IBM's KM strategy has focused on management of knowledge assets, expertise location, collaboration, and on-demand learning (Powers, 2006). As Luis Suarez, Social Computing Evangelist at IBM, notes, IBM's KM programs had been focused on the exchange of explicit knowledge, as opposed to a more balanced approach between explicit and tacit knowledge. IBM's use of Web 2.0 technologies, however, encourages people to share information and knowledge—more often and with more people than before (Suarez, 2006). IBM's podcasts are used to disseminate embrained knowledge on topics of specific technology, but also to communicate and reinforce IBM's stated values of trust and innovation. WHO: encoded knowledge Another organization using podcasting for knowledge management is the World Health Organization. Its KM strategy is intended to address the organization's strategic goals in “achieving a sustainable reduction in the health, social and economic burden of communicable diseases“ (WHO strategic plan 2008). The World Health Organization has been producing podcasts since November 2006, delivering speeches by the Director-General that provide health information and health-related news. The KM strategy focuses on national policy makers, WHO programs, and health professionals. The objectives of the strategy lie in three main areas: strengthening country health systems through better knowledge management establishing knowledge management and public health enabling the WHO to become a better learning organization by, among other things, sharing and applying experiential knowledge. [WHO podcasts] WHO's mission is to help bridge the gap between "knowing" and "doing" in global health by "fostering an environment that encourages the creation, sharing, and effective application of knowledge to improve health” (WHO, 2005). Marriott International: encultured knowledge Next, at Marriott International, various types of Web 2.0 media are used to build the brand and promote the corporate culture to all employees, called "associates." Chairman and CEO Bill Marriott, Jr. started "Marriott on the Move," a blog with audio and written entries, to create more transparency within the organization. The knowledge being captured in "Marriott on the Move" is what Blackler (1995) called encultured knowledge—that is, knowledge that deals with relationships and shared understandings. At the IABC 2008 international conference, Marriott explained that he started "Marriott on the Move" to give customers and employees a forum to interact with top leadership. Additionally, Marriott International has a weekly vodcast, called "Marriott Minute," available to all associates. Both the blog and the vodcast, along with a public YouTube channel and other interactive web-based initiatives, reflect the organization's culture and values of caring, openness and innovation (Nicholson, 2008 September-October, p. 18; Marriott International, 2008). University of Alberta International: embodied and embedded knowledge Finally, at the University of Alberta, one of the four commitments in the academic plan is to "build the transformative organization," including improving business processes and employee productivity. One of its departments is helping its employees to do this is by making use of an existing podcast to boost productivity: "The Get-it-done-Guy's Quick and Dirty Tips to Work Less and Do More." In its monthly staff electronic newsletter, University of Alberta International highlights tips from episodes and how they can apply to the unit's work. It encourages staff to listen to the podcasts. The knowledge being shared here is, for the most part, both embodied and embedded knowledge. Examples of productivity skills shared include tips for running more effective meetings, ways to manage employee expectations and tricks for keeping e-mail clutter to a minimum. That's all for this episode. Join us in episode two when we ponder the theory and practice of podcasting for knowledge management.
