Kevin Bersofsky from Montagne Russe Wines joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. He has been on CWC before, most recently on this episode of August 3, 2022. On Saturday August 10, the Wind to Wine festival is at the Gambonini Family Ranch in Petaluma. They start by tasting a sparkling wine that Kevin Bersofsky has made. Dan calls it "a very serious bubbly." It's a Brut Rosé and it is very dry. The flavors are fruity but not sweet. The Petaluma Gap was designated as an AVA in 2017. Kevin was using vineyards that were there before the AVA became official, like Springhill Ranch, Roberts Road, Gap's Crown, Terra de Promissio, Keller Estates, Sunchase, Night Wing, ... Montagne Russe Montagne Russe is the French, Italian and Spanish word for a Roller-Coaster. It literally means "Russian Mountains" because it was russian impresarios who brought ice to Paris and used it to decorate their roller coaster attractions. It can be in the 90s in the Petaluma Gap area, but by evening the wind comes in and it can be 20 degrees cooler. It blows in from Bodega Bay, off the sea. There are only two places that have east-west valleys that produce great wine, Santa Barbara County and Petaluma Gap. Dan says that the Petaluma Gap wines all have good structure because the acidity is strong. The grapes don't ripen as fast, so by staying on the vine they build up acidity. The average wind speed is 8 MPH faster in the gap than anywhere else in Sonoma County. The grapes like to cool down. The Gambonini Family Ranch will be the host of the Wind to Wine festival, with food music, wine talks and 30 or more Petaluma Gap wineries pouring wines. Dan's favorite Syrahs come from northern Victoria in Australia. They don't even import them to the US, but Dan Berger has some in his estensive personal cellar. The next wine they taste is the Montagne Russe 2021 Pinot Noir from the Roberts Road vineyard. Kevin knows that this is a vineyard that always makes good wine. Dan gets traces of cherry and also pomegranate. Steve likes the neologism Nutmeggy. Dan explains how the Sonoma Coast appellation was too varied and needed better definition. So the Petaluma Gap AVA was truly unique and deserved to be created.

Megan Bartholomay, our Froggy Wine Specialist from Republic National Distributing is back with another episode of Wine Wednesday.  Follow Megan @fargos.winest  This week's wine: MIRABELLE BRUT ROSÉ   Mirabelle is Schramsbergs multi-vintage brut sparkling wine. Twenty years into building an outstanding range of vintage dated sparkling wines, the Davies family set out to master the non-vintage or multi-vintage traditional method technique. A few years of experimentation would ultimately lead to the successful launch of Mirabelle Brut and Mirabelle Brut Rose in 1992. This wine is a specially crafted blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Schramsbergs select cool-climate vineyards in the Napa-Carneros, Sonoma Coast, Anderson Valley and Marin County areas of Californias North Coast. Starting in 2022, the Mirabelle packaging started to designate the bottling number to give specificity to each bottling of Mirabelle, and to highlight the vintage which is primarily in the blend. For this 31st bottling, the 2019 vintage makes up 78% of the blend, with the other 22% being from select base wines from previous vintages. The grapes are picked by hand and gently pressed to provide superior quality juice for the production of this balanced, refreshing rosé bubbly. In the spring following the fall harvest, base wines are individually evaluated and carefully blended by our winemakers. Pinot Noir lots, including a few fermented with skin contact, provide brightness of berry fruit and body, while Chardonnay lots lend length and zest to the palate. Additional flavor depth and aromatic complexity results from the blending of base wine lots aged in barrels and tanks for one or more years. The wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle and rests for approximately two years before its release. Following the en tirage aging, an extensive dosage trial process produces the ideal finishing touch, and the sparkling wine is ready to be enjoyed. The finished Brut Rosé exhibits fresh, elegant, and toasty aromas that lead into lively and delicious fruit flavors on the palate. The multi-vintage Mirabelle Rosé is delicious on its own, and it also pairs well with everything from grilled salmon, BBQ pork ribs, poke tuna, classic Hawaiian pizza or simple pastas.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Oded Shakked, owner and winemaker at Longboard Vineyards, is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. He was last on the show in 2020 on this episode during the pandemic, when all the guests were calling in on the phone. Previously he was also on the show in 2018 on this episode.  Oded is a surfer so that explains the name Longboard Vineyards.  He has lived, worked and surfed on four continents, says his website. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Longboard Vineyards was founded in 1998, while Oded was a winemaker for J Vineyards. He started Longboard Vineyards as a hobby and he has been doing it solo since 2005. He speaks Hebrew, French, Spanish and English. Dan Berger likes Longboard's Pinot Noir and Oded credits his growers, including Rochioli. Dan Berger brought another of his cellar wines today, a Silvaner, which is in a bottle shaped like the old Mateus bottles. It is very dry. Join the Rodney Strong mailing list to receive special offers, information on new releases, and more. Albariño Oded has brought an Albariño. There is also a Portuguese cousin that in that language is written Alvarinho. This is the wine he would drink while on surf trips to northern Spain and Portugal. The grapes are grown in Russian River Valley. Dan says that this wine has strong acidity. Oded wanted it to be strong like that but not too strong. It was fermented in neutral barrels. Chicken apple sausage is Dan's food pairing idea. Longboard Vineyards still makes sparkling wines, Brut, Brut Rosé and Brut Z with no sugar. Sauvignon Blanc is the one most found in distribution. He also makes a Rochioli Chardonnay and this Albarinño. The Albarinño is a semi-floral variety but it is a lot more serious than a Pinot Grigio. It also has some white peach flavors. Oded sums it up with one term: yummy! Carignane and Syrah He has also brought a Carignane. At one time this was one of the most popular varietals. It is from Vincenzo Vineyard in Mendocino County. He only sells it from the barrel into a growler. "Exotic, rustic, tasty,... pizza wine," declares Dan. It is a single vineyard. Oded descsribes cherry flavors in the bouquet. The next wine to taste is a Longboard Syrah. Dan says to give it five or six more years. Oded suggests it would go with fish. The winery is located in Healdsburg at 5 Fitch Street, open 11 am to 6 pm daily. They welcome walk-ins, but groups of 6 or 8 or more can make reservations.

Hey, Friends! We are so excited to catch up with Katheleen of Inman Family Wines out of Sonoma County!! About Kathleen Kathleen Inman is the owner, winemaker, and general manager of Inman Family Wines and Olivet Grange Vineyard in Sonoma County, California. A Napa Valley native, Inman started Inman Family Wines in 2000 with the planting of an OGV 10.45-acre estate in the heart of the Russian River Valley. She currently produces Pinot Noir, an intentional direct-to-press Rosé of Pinot Noir called Endless Crush®, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Extra Brut Luxe Cuvée, Brut Rosé, and a Blanc de Noir. Inman endeavors to produce wines that are naturally low in alcohol, high in acid, and food-friendly. Often an innovator and trendsetter, Inman was the first new California luxury brand to launch using 100% Stelvin® closures in 2002 and was a pioneer in the revival of California rosé, producing her best-selling Endless Crush ® rosé since 2004, long before they became a staple in California wineries. Through the vineyard and winery, Inman has been able to meld her passion for Pinot Noir and what she calls her “eco-ethics”–sensitive farming, natural winemaking and environmentally responsible business practices. She works fervently to grow grapes and to make wines as naturally as possible to ensure they embody not only the pure personality of the grapes from which they're made, but also the singular character of the place where they're grown, while at the same time making the smallest impact possible on the land, water, and air. Inman farms without synthetic chemicals and is proud that her property has been certified sustainable by Sonoma County since 2016. Inman's passion for the environment was further embodied through her design of the Inman Family Winery, which is made almost entirely from recycled materials, is solar-powered and recycles all of the winery graywater. The winery has an electric vehicle charging station, which when originally installed was the first privately owned, publicly available station in the North Bay; it is connected directly to the winery's solar array, off the grid. The McBride Sisters Hawke's Bay Brut Rose is a non-vintage blend of 64% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and 6% Merlot vineyards located in Hawke's Bay growing region on the North Island in New Zealand. The Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay are iconic grapes used in Champagne wines, so the uncommon addition of Merlot is an interesting choice. The South Island of New Zealand, especially Marlborough, is a high-volume wine region. The North Island and Hawke's Bay is a more boutique area with family-owned wineries with smaller vineyard holdings. Hawke's Bay is on the eastern south-central side of the Island. The grapes there will have different characteristics from the more well-known South Island wines. One of McBride Sisters wine's best things isn't the wine (though they are excellent). It the sisters' story and how they came to form the largest Black-owned wine company in the United States, but how the sisters came to meet. Here is a link to their website, along with a CBS morning news segment that tells the story. They are half-sisters, same father different mothers. They were not aware that the other existed. One sister moved with her mother to New Zealand; the other lived with her mother in Monterey, California. Dad was not around much. The New Zealand sister lost her mother to cancer at an early age and went into foster care. The California sister had a better time of it. The father, who was also battling cancer, told the other lost sister's family, but he had no information on the location. The family went about calling every Robin McBride they could find until somehow they found her in New Zealand. The next day she was on the plane to the US, and Andrea and Robin were united. The two sisters separately had been a part of the wine industry, one in New Zealand, the other in Monterey. In 2005 they started the McBride Sister Collection. They also produce SHE CAN canned wines and the Black Girl Magic line of wine. They started the SHE CAN Professional Development Fund to help women also achieve their dreams. There are many interesting backstories in wine; it seems interesting people like to make wine. But the McBride Sisters story is a story of hope and determination. The McBride Sisters Hawke's Bay Brut Rose is available in wine shops, but I found it at Trader Joe's for $14.99. This Sparkling wine is produced with the Charmat Method, which is the same technique used to make Prosecco. The second fermentation, which is where the bubbles are formed, occurs in large pressurized vats.It is the same principle as the autoclaves used to sterilize surgical equipment and tattoo needles, only on a much larger scale. The pressure helps the CO2 to incorporate into the wine in weeks or months. With Champagne, the 2nd fermentation lasts for 18 months and often longer. The Charmat Method is Industrial Age technology, and the Champagne Method is Renaissance Age technology, though both have been updated over the years. The McBride Sisters Hawke's Bay Brut Rose should be interesting Bubbly; the grapes are carefully sourced from upscale vineyards, and the Charmat Method should give the wine a light, breezy nature. The alcohol content is 12.6%.McBride Sisters Hawke's Bay Brut Rose Tasting NotesThe color is pale salmon pink, with a good supply of bubbles. The nose is delicate, with faint scents of vanilla ice cream, strawberry, a slap of grapefruit, and a floral edge. The McBride Sisters Hawke's Bay Brut Rose crisp and clean with well-balanced acidity. This Bubbly tastes dried strawberry pieces, lemon/lime (not sweet), juicy peach, tart cranberry, a salty sensation, and a mix of lemon curd and Anjou Pear. All the flavors a light but distinct. The acidity allows the flavors to unfold but never bites. The SummaryThe McBride Sisters Hawke's Bay Brut Rose is extremely tasty and refreshing Bubbly. It has me thinking about the coming warm weather.Rose' Sparkling wines are weird.

Lakeville Napa Valley Brut Róse 2019 is a $9.99 Trader Joe's exclusive, a Sparkling wine made from the Pinot Noir grape sourced from vineyards in Napa Valley. There are a couple of odd details concerning the Lakeville Napa Valley Brut Róse. First, if you look at the title, the "o" in Rose has the punctuation, not the "e." I checked Google to see if that is actually a thing and came up empty. This is a Sparkling wine that is supposed to have been made by a big name Napa Sparkling wine producer, so is the misplaced accent some clue? The second odd detail is that this wine is labeled as a "carbonated Róse wine." That can mean any wine from Champaign to wine spritzers. Or the dictionary definition of a carbonated wine is one that obtained the bubbles artificially.Artificially as in not some fermentation process, more like the Soda Stream you can but at Target. The bottle is then topped by a cork and cage, used with Sparkling wines that have a great deal of pressure inside the bottle. The bottle is a heavy-duty Sparkling wine bottle; it has thick glass and a good-sized punt; the indentation on the bottom of the bottle adds strength. Is Trader Joe's simply being coy about the real producer of the Lakeville Napa Valley Brut Róse 2019? Carbonated soft drinks, which are artificially carbonated, do not need a cork and cop enclosure. So who knows what the real story is?Trader Joe's Frequent Flyer says this wine is from Napa Valley's premier producer of Sparkling wine. Several wineries fit this description. Still, the Lakeville Napa Valley Brut Róse 2019 label name is owned by a family-owned winery from Lodi, California, that also produces Bubbly. They show a Brut Rose' made from Pinot Noir on their website that lists for $16.That does not mean that the original winery did not pass this wine through another winery to get to Trader Joe's finally. The lack of any useful information concerning this Bubbly leads me to believe that TJ's is hiding the winery's identity. Here is what we know, the grape is Pinot Noir, from vineyards in Napa Valley, that may be from a fancy Napa Bubbly producer, or it could be from a fine Lodi family-owned winery and it is a vintage-dated wine. And it still sells for $9.99.The alcohol content is 11.5%, which puts in the Traditional Method (Champagne) and Charmat Method (Prosecco) territory.Lakeville Napa Valley Brut Róse 2019 Tasting NotesThe color is serious pink with a hint of peach, and it has plenty of energetic bubbles. The nose is strawberry hard candy, faint tomato, cherry, light herbs, and roses. This is an interesting, unexpected aroma for a Pinot Noir based Sparkling wine. This is a bright Sparkling wine with good acidity. It tastes like a mix of cherry and lemonade, tart cranberry, a chewy, lightly yeasty sensation, and tangerine and raspberry.I have not had a Sparkling wine that tasted like this for as long as I can remember, but I like it. The Lakeville Napa Valley Brut Róse 2019 has bright acidity and is equal parts flavor and texture. It is a unique drinking experience. The SummaryThe Lakeville Napa Valley Brut Róse 2019 is an interesting drinking experience. I am not sure if it is tasty or delicious; it is new or a sensation. But I do know I want another sip.$9.99 Pink Bubbles is just the ticket for Valentine's Day. It may be different, but it does drink well.

The Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose is a $4.99 ALDI exclusive, a Sparkling wine made with the Charmat Method. The Charmat Method is the same process used in the making of Prosecco and is often referred to as the Italian Method though it is used all over the wine world. The back label says this Bubbly was produced and bottled by Burlwood Cellars, Modesto, California. The Burlwood portion is just a brand name that Aldi uses. The Modesto, California part indicates that there is a good chance E and J Gallo had something to do with the making of this Sparkling Rose'.Gallo produces Bear Bros. and Mademoiselle wines for Aldi and is skilled at producing bang-for-the-buck inexpensive wines. They have a huge portfolio but Barefoot Bubbly and Andre's will be similar to Burlwood Cellars. And for five bucks Bubbly those wines are not too bad.Is $4.99 for the Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose too cheap for a drinkable Sparkling wine? The answer is probably not. The Charmat Method introduces the bubbles into the wine by transferring the wine after its first fermentation (just like all other wine) into very large pressurized tanks.Sugar and yeast are added to the tanks and the CO2 that is released by the 2nd fermentation are forced by the pressure back into the wine. This process lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. The more expensive the wine the longer the process. With a 5 dollar Bubbly the second fermentation probably was a few weeks, not a few months. That is a shorter aging period than a comparable still wine. It is quite possible that value-priced Bubbly takes less time to get ready for sale than still wine.Aldi and Burlwood do not mention which grapes were used for the Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose. Rose' is typically red grapes, the color comes from limited contact with the skins, but there are White grapes that are very red.A Brut Sparkling wine is a dry or not sweet wine. It is often hard to tell just how sweet a Sparkling wine is because the acidity in the wine balances the sweetness. The Burlwood Cellars Brut Roses a party wine, four bottles of Bubbly for twenty bucks. That will get the party started. But it does have to taste good. It does not have to be complicated or have layers of flavor, but what is in your glass has to be enjoyable. So on to the Tasting portion of the review.Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose Tasting NotesThe first thing to note is that this Sparkling wine did not have a cage and cork, but a twist-off resealable top. The color is a very pretty Barbie doll pink with a good supply of bubbles. The nose is, well it smells just like Rose' Bubbly, there is strawberry, faint yeasty bread, a bit of minerality, a little citrus, and a hint of spice. How does it taste? Better than any $4.99 Bubbly has a right to taste. It starts with black cherry, there is a slight cherry cough drop feel but not pronounced, dried strawberry, a salty, nutty thing (on lees?), a brush of minerality, enough to give this Sparkling wine a needed tight edge. The mid-palate adds blood orange and soft plum. The acidity is very well-balanced. The acidity in cheap Bubbles often is out of whack and can bite, but not with the Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose. The SummaryThe Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose is a solid party wine or a Tuesday night watching Netflix wine.I know you usually do not have great expectations for a $4.99 wine, but this Bubbly actually tastes good and has no rough edges or defects that you just have to live within five bucks Bubbly.Short review: The Burlwood Cellars Brut Rose is way better than you thought.

La Burgondie Brut Rosé

The La Burgondie Brut Rosé is an $11.99 Trader Joe's import Sparkling wine made in the Traditional Method with grapes farmed in the Burgundy region of France. This is a Cremant which is French for Sparkling wine or Bubbly. The grapes used in this Cremant are 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Gamay. If you are not familiar with Burgundy the southernmost growing region is Beaujolais which produces wine with the Gamay grape. The northernmost region is Champagne, which, well, you know what they are famous for.Burgundy, in the middle, is the home of some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the world. The La Burgondie Brut Rosé is made with the same production techniques as Champagne. With that method, the final fermentation, where the bubbles are created, occurs in each and every bottle. An important difference between Champagne and Cremant is that the 2nd fermentation must last at least 18 months in Champagne, while this Cremant is only required to have 9 months of aging. Winemakers will often age their wines beyond the minimum.Trader Joe's import wines can often have mysterious patronage, but we know who produced this Bubbly. Bailly-Lapierre is a group of 430 grape growers who have been producing Cremant since the 1970s. They are very well regarded and produce 3,500,000 bottles of Bubbly per year.Trader Joe's has a price advantage over the typical wine retail shop. For one thing not only is Trader Joe's nationwide store in the US, but it is also ALDI Nord (North) is Europe and other places. They have an almost worldwide sales reach. Wine shops are usually confined to a city or a state. Supermarket chains can have a larger reach, but they do not typically focus on their own brands.Trader Joe's does not advertise or market their products other than the in-house Fearless Flyer and their distribution costs are reduced. I do not have information on every deal they have with wineries, but they often pay for the wine on delivery which allows them to negotiate a better price. The La Burgondie Brut Rosé at $11.99 may well be the equivalent to a Sparkling wine with a price closer to twenty dollars. It is difficult to make exact comparisons, but Bailly-Lapierre sells a Brut Rose' under their own label that lists for $24. How similar that wine is to the La Burgondie isn't clear. What is known is that Burgundy is an outstanding location for Pinot Noir grapes and this Sparkling wines producer makes quality wine. A Brut Buubly is wine talk for a dry or not sweet wine and the alcohol content is 12%.The La Burgondie Brut Rosé Tasting NotesThe color is Barbie doll pink with a hint of amber and the bubbles are plentiful. The nose is strawberry seltzer, ripe black cherry, faint crusty bread, and cherry hard candy. This is a crisp, delicate Bubbly, with excellent acidity. It tastes of tart, slightly sour cherry, a hint of vanilla, nectarine, and just a touch of yeasty bread. The mid-palate adds sharp cranberry, a little spice, cherry cough drops, and salt. For a Bubbly that has very light and delicate flavors, it is especially tasty and the acidity calls you to take another sip.The SummaryThe La Burgondie Brut Rosé is a very controlled Bubbly. Everything is right where it is supposed to be. That is not typical of value-priced Sparkling wine. Cheap Bubbles are often tasty and loads of fun, but rarely elegant and sophisticated.I am partial to Pinot Noir based Bubbly and La Burgondie does not let me down. This is Trader Joe's sleeper Bubbly. It looks like all the other value Sparkling wines on the shelve, the label gives nothing away. But this is a very solid example of a Cremant from Burgundy at a bargain price.

The StoryThe Opaline Sparkling Pinot Noir Brut Rose is a non-vintage $7.99 Trader Joe's wine imported from France. That is the bulk of the information concerning this Bubbly. The label says Product of France which does not narrow wines origin down to any great extent. The Opaline does have a very nice bottle. The glass is prism-cut and the shape reminds me of the type of bottle they use in Provence. Opaline is either milk glass or translucent glass, though the actual bottle is neither. The only information I found for the Opaline is from Aldi Sud, which is Trader Joe's real German name. Not that Reader Joe's wines have a wealth of technical information available.Does this Pinot Noir get its bubbles in the French traditional Method or in the Italian Charmat Method? I would expect it, at this price, to be produced in the Charmat Method (Pressurized tank 2nd fermentation), but Cava from Spain does the Traditional Method Bubbly at close to these prices, so you never know.A sub eight buck Sumner Bubbly Rose' from France is usually a good thing, so not knowing the who, what, when, and where of this Bubbly is not a deal-breaker, as long as it passes the taste test. The alcohol content is a mild 12%.Opaline Sparkling Pinot Noir Brut Rose Tasting NotesThe color is on the apricot side of pink and it has decent but not great bubbles. The nose is a little black cherry, a touch of bakery bread, some mineral water, and cherry cough drops. This is a crisp, lightly fruity Sparkling wine, not complex, but still tasty. It starts with cherry, with a slightly hard edge, a hit of minerality, and strawberry. There is a little tangerine on the mid-palate, along with soft vanilla. The acidity is well-balanced, this is one of those wines that will get you reaching for another sip.The Summary8 bucks for a French Brut Pinot Noir Bubbly, how can you go wrong?Put a good chill on the Opaline Sparkling Pinot Noir Brut Rose' and you have a party, even if you are the only one there.

Kingsley Sparkling Brut Rosé

The StoryThe Kingsley Sparkling Brut Rose' is a $6.99 Trader Joe's Sparkling wine made in the Traditional Method by Rack and Riddle. That is all I know about this Bubbly, but that might be enough. The first thing to note is that $6.99 for a Traditional Method Sparkling wine is crazy cheap. The Traditional Method is the production technique used in Champagne. After the wine is fermented the first time, it is bottled, not all the way to the top, they leave a little room. Then a measured amount of yeast and sugar is added to each bottle and sometime later, in Champagne a minimum of 18 months, they remove the spent yeast, top off the bottle and add the cork and cage. About every other day for the entire period of the 2nd fermentation the bottles are turned a quarter turn so the dead yeast does not stick to the inside of the bottle. In the old days all this was done by hand, it is mostly automated now, only the most exclusive Champagne wines are made by hand. It is one of the reasons Champagne costs more than Prosecco. Prosecco is made in the Charmat Method which is a quicker and less complicated way to get bubbles into wine. The second point is this Bubbly is made by Rack and Riddle, they are a custom Sparkling Wine House with a couple of facilities in northern California. Quake from Cheapwinefinder toured their Sonoma facility on one of his California wine visits. He reported seeing pallets of cases of Sparkling wines from every conceivable wine brand. There is a very good chance that you have tasted Bubbly made at a Rack and Riddle facility and didn't know it. The point is that they know how to make Bubbly. I don't know the origins of this Bubbly, is it made to order for Trader Joe's? Is it the leftovers from a more expensive Sparkling wine?I don't know, I don't even know what grapes were used in the making of this Brut Rose'. (Just a reminder, Brut means not sweet). You occasionally see Spanish Cava, which is also made in the Traditional Method for under ten bucks. But an American $6.99 Traditional Method Bubbly is rare, Barefoot makes Bubbly is this general price range, but as I recall those wines are made in the less expensive Charmat Method. The alcohol content is 12.5%.Kingsley Sparkling Brut Rose' Tasting NotesThe color is on the apricot side of pink and there are plenty of bubbles. I read somewhere that you can tell the quality of a Sparkling wine by the size of the bubbles. I guess that means the length of time the 2nd fermentation lasts to better the bubbles are incorporated into the wine. My first impression when looking at my glass is these bubbles are on the larger side. But, what exactly is the difference between teeny and tiny? The nose does not give up a lot in terms of aromas, there is a little melon, yeasty bread, some candy spice (red licorice), a hint of cherry. The Kingsley Sparkling Brut Rose' maybe a little short on aroma, but it is not lacking in flavor. It tastes of a lemon/strawberry mix, sort of like Italian ice, followed by tart, sour cherry, a slap of minerality, watermelon, and light yeasty bread. It has that lip-smacking acidity that constantly tempts you to take another sip.The Summary* The Kingsley Sparkling Brut Rose' does not drink like a $6.99 Bubbly.* I don't think it is exactly delicious, but it is not bad at all.* I don't what your expectations are for a sub 7 buck bubbly,

Anna de Codorníu Brut Rosé Cava

Anna de Codorníu Brut RoséThe StoryThe Anna de Codorníu Brut Rosé Cava is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay sourced from estate vineyards near the town of Lleida in the Cava D.O. of northeast Spain (near Barcelona). A typical Cava uses the three indigenous grapes, Macabeo, Xarello, and Parelada, but since this is a Rose' and Red grapes skins are needed to get the pink coloration so traditional Champagne grapes are substituted. The Cordorniu company has a great tradition. They are the oldest company in Spain and the 17th oldest company in the world. They have been in business for over 500 years and they are the first winery to produce Cava in 1872. Cava is produced with the same techniques used in Champagne, France. The second fermentation (where the bubbles are formed) occurs inside each bottle. In Champagne second fermentation has to last a minimum of 18 months, with Cava the second fermentation lasts a minimum of 12 months. The Cordorniu family started the winery as early as 1551 and in 1659 Anna de Codorniu married Miquel Raventós. And in 1872 it was Josep Raventós who pioneered Cava, so there is a lot of history and knowledge behind this $11 (on sale) Spanish Bubbly. While the Cava D.O. borders on the Mediterranean Ocean the Codorniu vineyards for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are more inland section. The grapes are always harvested at night when the weather is cooler and the grapes are relaxing. If you want to know where the pink color comes from the skins of the Pinot Noir grapes are left with the crushed grapes juice for 3 to 4 hours. Then the skins are removed and the first fermentation begins. What is the difference between Champagne and Cava? The climate is an obvious difference, Champagne is much farther north in France, the climate there is cool or cold enough that grapes growing to produce still wines (no Bubbles) frequently didn't get ripe enough to be useable. Sparkling wine grapes are picked earlier than still wine grapes, so they suit Champagne's climate. In the Cava region, it is warmer so the growing season is shorter. So the climate makes a difference.Champagne ages their Sparkling wine (second fermentation) much longer, on average than Cava wines typically are aged. The Bubbly with extended aging is the Bubbly that is of the most interest and demands the highest prices. There are Cava's that have very long aging, 3,4 years or more, but they are usually small production wines and not that common. Bubbly aged a shorter period of time tend to be crisp and with a long time can get creamy. The internal pressure from the carbonation (atmospheres) is greater with Champagne wines, it is one of Champagne's unique features. There is typically less pressure inside a Cava bottle, though you may not notice unless you pop the top on a Champagne and a Cava side by side. The 3 traditional Cava White grapes will taste different than Champagne Chardonnay grapes. There is a noticeable flavor difference between the two Sparkling wines. But with the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay used in the Anna de Codorníu Brut Rosé Cava, a comparison of flavors is possible. This Cava is 25% less expensive than entry-level Champagne, is Champagne four times better, let's find out.Anna de Codorníu Brut Rosé Cava Tasting NotesThe color is a salmon pink and there are plenty of bubbles. The nose is tart cherry, pink lemonade, stone fruit, soft spice, and a touch of crusty bakery bread. This is a dry, crisp Sparkling wine with flavor. It starts with ripe strawberry, lemon/lime (not sweet), tart cherry, and a salty sensation. The mid-palate offers a slap of minerality, dried strawberry bits, and lime. The acidity is really good, it is the type of acidity in the wine that lets the flavors unfold and also gets you reaching for another sip. The finish is fairly full and lengthy. The Summary I said, is Champagne four times better than the Anna de Codorníu Brut Rosé Cava and that was kind of a trick question.

Listen up bucko, there is no way you are going to get out of this having learned about the terroir of Franciacorta. You’re going to have to do that on your own, because the boys gleefully spent about 45 minutes derailing guest Chris Struck’s attempted monologue about it. Instead, you’re going to hear three powerful wine divos in the prime of the power and influence get absolutely out of their minds discussing method traditional sparklers without saying the word “Champagne.” There’s a lot of shots and quite a few edits, so probably none of this is legally actionable but also, uh parody laws are a thing, right? Literally though, if it’s not clear as hell from how much fu we had, these wines all are incredible joys, and frankly overdeliver. Put them in your repertoire and smoke them. Mumm Napa Brut Rosé

The StoryThe Mumm Napa Brut Rose' is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay sourced from as many as 50 different vineyards (depending on the vintage) in the Napa Valley AVA. Mumm Napa started in the early 1970s is the California project of GH Mumm founded 150 years earlier in Champagne, France. Mumm Champagne is the 3rd largest selling Bubbly in the world and the largest selling Sparkling wine in France. The 50 vineyard sources may seem like way too many vineyards but the entry-level Champagne from one of Champagne's most iconic Bubblies uses 100 vineyards. Since all Sparkling wine producers that use the Traditional Method of production use the same general method for the 2nd fermentation (where the bubbles are born), the magic happens during the 1st fermentation. Different vineyard lots are fermented separately and often differently, here most of the batches were fermented in stainless steel tanks, but some select batches were fermented in French oak barrels. Everything, every process used in the making of wine affects the finished product, even adding 1% of another grape makes a noticeable change. Champagne Houses have an identifiable and hopefully unique style for their Bubbly. When talking about the making of Champagne (France) or Sparkling Wine (Napa) the Winemakers usually highlight the 2nd fermentation where each bottle is filled with still wine then a measured amount of sugar and yeast is added. The 2nd fermentation is fairly standard, the main differences are the length, here it is 18 months. The 1st fermentation is where the house-style is formulated and the exact production techniques are carefully guarded. This is a Rose' and to get the proper color a small measured amount of still (not Bubbly) Pinot Noir is added to every bottle. The Mumm Napa sells for less than half of the price the French Champagne Mumm Cordon Rouge Brut. I found the Mumm Napa on sale for about $16, while the French stuff is $35 to $40. Yes, Champagne has great vineyards and decades of Bubbly experience, but it's not like Napa vineyards are all that shabby and the production techniques and equipment are at this point universal. I know French Champagne is excellent but is there any reason that Napa Valley Bubbly cannot be equally entertaining at half the price? The Tasting NotesThe color is pale gold with a flurry of tiny bubbles. The nose is black cherry, cream, a touch of yeasty bread, a hint of spice, grapefruit, and the nougat inside a 3 Musketeers bar. This Bubbly has a soft creamy mouth-feel, with black cherry flavors, quite different if you are used to Chardonnay dominate Bubbly. It starts with ripe black cherry, then sleek, not too tart grapefruit, then a slap of vanilla cream. The mid-palate adds some minerality (just enough to be noticeable), raspberry, and a salty, nutty flavor. The acidity is really good, not enough to bite, bit enough to get you to reach for another sip. The finish is subtle but long. The Summary * Mumm Napa Brut Rose' is a well-made and delicious Bubbly, remember this is mostly Pinot Noir and the flavor profile will be a departure from Chardonnay-based Champagne-style Bubbly. Only Bubbly from Champagne can legally be called Champagne, so the Mumm Napa has to be referred to as a Sparkling wine. * The best wine I ever had was a Blanc de Noir Champagne (that means White wine from Red Grapes) or a Bubbly made from all Red Grapes usually meaning Pinot Noir. I didn't know enough about wine at the time to remember the name of the wine, I mistakenly thought they were probably all that good. But just the same my personal preference with Bubbles is Pinot based wines. Though, I have drunk my share of Chardonnay Bubbles, too. * So, Napa versus France, who wins? If I'm paying I'm am more than happy to drink Mumm Napa,
