This Week's Topics Quentin Johnston's developmental arc and putting his pre-draft scouting report into proper perspective. Why all early-round picks shouldn't have the same expectations based on draft capital. C.J. Stroud and the factors contributing to him being ahead of the rookie development curve. S2, AIQ, and the good and bad of these processing tests. The Ravens uncaging Lamar Jackson's game and the behaviors of others that led to it being limited in the first place. Coming to grips with the Chiefs offense and why Patrick Mahomes may be the reason Kansas City doesn't have strong production at wide receiver. And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2023 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95.  Matt's new RSP Dynasty Rankings and Two-Year Projections Package is available for $24.95 If you're a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2022 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge.   If you're a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2022 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge.   Best yet, proceeds from sales are set aside for a year-end donation to Darkness to Light to combat the sexual abuse of children.

Candice is back on the main feed, asking for help as she deconstructs the striking overlap between cult dynamics and colonial harm. Inspired by the work of BIPOC educators and anti-racism activists, she explores how social location factors into collective cult recovery. Then, artist, activist, and educator, Aleyah-Erin Lennon joins Candice for the first half of a two-part conversation that explores what it might mean, if we, as white women in the world were to take radical responsibility. Aleyah identifies as a second-generation diasporic Irish descendant and white settler Canadian who has lived her entire life in the territories of Anishinaabeg nations. She has been privileged to work alongside and learn from Indigenous communities across the Great Lakes region for the last 15 years in service to their ecological and educational visions. Together, Aleyah and Candice explore what unconscious colonial identities have in common with the cult mindset, picking apart what it might actually mean to break free from the cult of whiteness. Aleyah shares about her background and how a search for spiritual community inspired her to take up decolonizing identity work, and she cites the wisdom of Indigenous mentors who have generously offered their consent and support for this conversation. Decolonization is defined in the context of intergenerational healing on all sides of the colonial and racial divide. Aleyah shares how a threefold methodology of deep listening, critical self-reflection, and embodied action can guide us toward relational accountability. Aleyah shares how reclaiming a connection to her ancestral roots has been pivotal to her living activism and points to how we all might find a deeper sense of meaning and recovery as we grapple with where we're headed.Aleyah-Erin Lennon (she/her) is a scholar, speaker, poet and musician. Through an anti-colonial and trauma-informed lens, her focus is on healing the disconnection and abuses in the trilogy of our relationships to Self, Others, and Land. Created in partnership with Indigenous Elders, knowledge holders, and friends, her published work weaves diverse cultural narratives, story sharing, and poetry into a landscape of questions concerning our sense of identity and belonging.Referenced in this episode:White Privilege, Quantified - Joe PinskerMy Grandmother's Hands - Resmaa MenekamSacred Water Circle – Elder Dorothy TaylorNibi Emosaawdamajig – Dr. Elder Shirley WilliamsCircle of All Nations – Algonquin Elder Grandfather William Commanda-baSupport the showThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content. What was your Achilles heel in school? Essays? Presentations? Tests? I was never strong at exams, so I had put the effort into my course work to salvage a decent grade. But this is where Universal Design for Learning comes in. The goal of UDL is to provide students with the options to learn for themselves in ways that make sense to them. At the forefront of bringing UDL to the classroom is today's guest, Danny Smith. Danny is a professor at George Brown College, educating students in the college's marketing and advertising program. But this Ottawa-area native almost missed his calling to teach. When the concurrent education program at Trent University passed on Danny's application, he chose to study mass communications at Carleton University. This led to a career in marketing, which led to a career in education administration, which would eventually pave the way for Danny's teaching career. Danny Smith stops by to chat about growing up in Nepean Ontario, a marketing career that includes the Sales & Merchandise Group and Capital C, and how he's revolutionizing the classroom experience with Universal Design for Learning. www.mediapeople.ca www.youtube.com/@mediapeoplepodcast www.instagram.com/vicgenova/

All change requires some level of courage, confidence, trust, and faith. But not all of us naturally feel confident. Some of that, particularly for historically excluded folks like women, POC, the LGBTQIA+ community, those with disabilities, those of varied sizes, and of varied immigration status, our confidence is often impacted by systemic oppression. If we don't see people like us in spaces we want to be in we usually question ourselves, our abilities, and our belonging. So how do we build confidence in an unjust world? I've got 10 hot tips for you!   In this episode, you will be able to: Debunk the myth of imposter syndrome. Hint: it's a major distraction.  Learn a step by step approach to building confidence over time. Strengthen your inner voice. Practice kindness and self-compassion, making confidence-building more attainable. Cultivate a strong support network to help achieve your goals and reach your full potential. If 82% of people feel it, it's impossible to believe that it's about individual inadequacy. I think it has much more to do with structural inequality. - Amina AlTai We are enough. Focusing on our own alleged inadequacy is a distraction from the broken system. We need to focus less on fixing ourselves and more on shifting a broken world. While our nation rages on and on about a host of topics including wokeness, gender ideology, and critical race theory, we may be blinding ourselves to the most pressing issue in America … fatherlessness.Consider these staggering statistics:- 18 million kids here in the United States live without a biological, step, or adoptive father present in the home.- 85 percent of youth in prison come from a fatherless home.- 1 in every 3 pregnancies in a fatherless home end in abortion.- 63% of youth suicide victims come from a fatherless home.Could it be the root of all of our problems can be found in the sobering fact that so many of our children are not being exposed to a male role model early enough in life? While everyone attempts to solve our societal ills by treating symptoms, the Church (with a Capital C) is being called to fight the issue at its roots.Founder of The Alliance for Ending the Fatherless Epidemic, Eric Swithin, believes the solution to curing the epidemic is not to outsource it to the government but to mobilize the Church and wage war against the enemy decimating our homes. In his new documentary, “The Fatherless Epidemic”, Swithin points out that the 21st Century version of a widow is the single mom and the orphan is a fatherless kid. The key to erasing the fatherless epidemic? Mentorship. And that's where the Church comes in.Swithin joins us on the Crossmap Podcast to talk about why fatherlessness has become the most pressing issue in America. Listen as he shares how churches and ministries can come alongside fatherless children to provide the nurturing and care they need to become happy, emotionally healthy adults. The Alliance for Ending the Fatherless EpidemicVisit their websiteLinks to Crossmap Crossmap Website Crossmap Facebook

She speaks about grind 'cult'ure, the work of Tricia Hersey, and why regular breaks from creating content are so damn important. Fawning is once again defined and explored in greater detail, including a share about a recent wake-up call - a ‘fan girl' moment when Candice nearly lost her sh*t AND a valuable opportunity. Capital ‘C' cults are explored as well as the super-subtle ways we are all indoctrinated to perpetuate systemic oppression. Discord so yeah it is what it is.  [5:23] What happens when I throw an emoji and Discord ship.  Pastor Newms: [5:26] Or like this, and and just really just you know make it to where you have no idea.  Pastor Bill: [5:47] What does that look like in twitch.  Pastor Newms: [5:48] That appears to be a pain yeah.  Pastor Bill: [5:52] So twitch pics Discord is just a Discord doesn't speak to it.  Pastor Newms: [5:56] Well I think it's actually completely different because to be to referral the.  Pastor Bill: [6:03] Wow.  Pastor Newms: [6:14] And just so you know the thing that brings did it's an octopus doing this.  Pastor Bill: [6:20] Okay squid squid squid squid squid squid.  Pastor Newms: [6:22] Okay it's a squid doing this if it.  Pastor Bill: [6:25] Squid 1 or 2 Squid 3 Squid 4.  Pastor Newms: [6:27] Yeah it's doing this with its tentacles as individual Emojis all right, which the funny thing that one did not get picked up it just says Discord Bill Shea Circle so.  [6:59] Got it so that's how my week went was lots of driving lots of being places and then a bunch of talking.  Pastor Bill: [7:13] Shu Pei when you pick the panorama.  [7:19] The driving is one of the prices you pay when you pick the Panorama you chose to move to Tennessee and so now.  Pastor Newms: [7:27] But what's Panorama have to do with it that's the type of photo.  Pastor Bill: [7:32] Your view have a panoramic chose the it's a line from a song.  Pastor Newms: [7:41] I don't get it but that's cool like okay I get to look at mountains you don't I mean so I guess I get what that means like since my view.  Pastor Bill: [7:50] I am a mess.  [7:55] I just got to look in the mirror be like hello mountain man.  Pastor Newms: [7:58] You're a pile of something.  Pastor Bill: [8:01] Hey let's also pile.  Pastor Newms: [8:03] It's all a mountain is a pile of something.  Pastor Bill: [8:06] Know what kind of rocks in the mountain are not the same thing.  Pastor Newms: [8:10] Once just older.  Pastor Bill: [8:16] So my week was all right I guess I've officially decided that those people that I got a second interview with have ghosts.  Pastor Newms: [8:23] Ah  Pastor Bill: [8:24] That stinks I got a puppy this week so that's all.  Pastor Newms: [8:27] Yes you did.  Pastor Bill: [8:31] Pit lab named granola, who has taken to house training housebreaking very well surprisingly well, I got to see you this week hang out with you at a park for about an hour that was fun.  Pastor Newms: [8:50] Yep we got it we got a little bit of hanging out time.  Pastor Bill: [8:57] Miranda went to her first public school dance on Friday.  Pastor Newms: [9:02] Gross.  Pastor Bill: [9:05] Had a good time hanging out with her friends it was like a rave type theme with black lights glow sticks and she came back with a bunch of pictures and videos and stuff.  Pastor Newms: [9:17] Yeah see Grayson agrees with me.  Pastor Bill: [9:20] Racist.  Pastor Newms: [9:21] And I don't say that, you know let's be clear it's not the public school dance and it's not the Miranda dancing neither of those two things are gross it's the.  Pastor Bill: [9:33] Miranda.  Pastor Newms: [9:35] Going to a dance that is gross just overall so let's be clear on what I mean I am not hating on public school and I'm not hating on a child I am hating on, the the high school dance aspect of high school dance. Be coming from someone who never had to go to a high school dance because I went to a school that thought that if you danced you would probably end up burning in Hell quite quickly afterwards and so our homecoming it was literally in the middle of a basketball game and you just, you had the court and that the court walked away that was homecoming yay. So another thing cuz I just saw it on camera one of the things that did happen at the wedding is I shattered a tooth that was fun.  Pastor Bill: [10:44] You saw your tooth on camera is that what you're saying.  Pastor Newms: [10:46] Yeah I saw the whole on the additional the new hole in my face and it made me go oh yeah I broke a tooth which seems to happen now every time I go somewhere, like the last time I was in Texas I broke a tooth and so I'm like. You know well that's a thing.  Pastor Bill: [11:09] I guess I should just stop going places.  Pastor Newms: [11:11] Yeah I don't think that's the actual answer I think it's more I should probably get my teeth fixed but debt is expensive.  Pastor Bill: [11:22] Boomstick rooms.  Pastor Newms: [11:23] So says the guy who got all his teeth pulled out which is a form of fixing.  Pastor Bill: [11:32] For her I guess.  Pastor Newms: [11:33] So that that's that's how the weeks went.  Pastor Bill: [11:39] Cool it's time for getting to know the pastor's then it's your week to pull a car.  Pastor Newms: [11:43] Do you have any other thing you want to talk about before I before I read said card anything. I really am super tired for no good reason I had plenty of sleep last night because you know time change so we got a full extra hour, if you want a contest in which your prize was to select any three guests to appear on a popular late night talk show which three people would you choose. That's a weird contest yeah.  Pastor Bill: [12:22] I won a contest to choose three other people to go onto a talk show. For the participation of seeing those three people go on the talk show.  Pastor Newms: [12:55] What would you absolutely have to see for your trip to be compete complete so if you want an African safari what do you want to see on said African safari. Do do do do do do for me so I've kind of been an African safari but not really on an African safari.  Pastor Bill: [13:22] Water that's in Africa.  Pastor Newms: [13:23] No I did nope I did not go to Botswana you were wrong I went to South Africa.  Pastor Bill: [13:27] Where do you stay when it was here in South Africa.  Pastor Newms: [13:32] Did not go to boss did not go on the Botswana trip but the South Africa trip you we stayed on a, Safari it's a wildlife preserve that is now owned by the franzen's I believe and they they've made it into a school.  Pastor Bill: [13:54] About the franzen's have a school in Africa.  Pastor Newms: [13:57] And Zaydie correct me if I'm wrong if that's a different place but I'm 99% sure, if you're saying Franzen then I probably have the right people but I was actually looking at pictures of it earlier pictures from their school and they have a baby Rescue Center, which would be the only things they di would focus on that's that's a joke for all of you who don't know out there's 80 actually works with babies and loves babies more than any other form of human, but so they had a bunch of, you know animals and you know things on the Wildlife Preserve, and I don't like ostriches and I don't like emus you know rhinos are cool lions are cool but I've seen them, I've eaten zebra I've eaten giraffe so I don't really care to see those, zadie says I am an emu and they have much more hair than me so no I'm not.  Pastor Bill: [15:15] How are you an emu.  Pastor Newms: [15:16] I don't know I must get a I must aggressively pack while I flap my wings and run it people maybe which does seem like something I could possibly do let's be honest, so I don't really have anything I would like to see on an African safari because there's not anything that's really you know, I've been to some cool Safari zoos I've been to some cool you know there's some good zoos that I've been to that I've been able to see.  [15:54] We're not going to talk about that we're not even going to read that comment we're going to giggle and no one will know why so.  Pastor Bill: [16:04] Most of them read the.  Pastor Newms: [16:06] Yeah unless you're into which currently live the but. Yes I don't have anything you don't have anything okay well we have to have another card if you can't.  Pastor Bill: [16:24] Spell Geographic and I've seen the those Earth shows on TV I've seen enough of Africa as far as Safari wise goes.  Pastor Newms: [16:33] Here's a good one if everyone we're required. To wear a hat at all times what sort of hat would you wear.  [16:58] Now so I'm going to argue that this question is semi invalid because if I'm required to wear a hat at all times, I'm going to constantly be changing my hat I currently own like four different styles is like 12 hats zaidi says she would always wear a beanie which is not surprising I love beanies I love fedoras I own a cowboy hat I don't wear it very often, I love fitted ball caps I hate trucker hats.  Pastor Bill: [17:44] That's only that's only wearable when it's like cold outside because it holds in so much heat, you know but I mean I've also got a trucker hat I've got a fitted hat I've got one of those XE cab driver hats I've got a bowler hat I've got a fedora. My favorite is definitely the top hat but it's too hot.  Pastor Newms: [18:16] Right but that's your favorite. Overall which it's a steampunk hat so technically it could have a small air conditioner built into it if it was a required thing that all people had to wear hats hats would have air conditioners I think, yeah. Oh here we go don't do it yes when did you add the webbing.  Pastor Bill: [18:48] For Halloween this year.  Pastor Newms: [18:49] I like it I like the webbing I thought your goggles were more steampunk than they were then they look there I thought they were steampunk not black.  Pastor Bill: [19:01] No they're not bronze color.  Pastor Newms: [19:03] I thought they were bronze to match the little on the side of it.  Pastor Bill: [19:08] No even though it is new new ish mean that came with the set up instead of.  Pastor Newms: [19:15] Mmm okay well it shows how much I know which is none.  Pastor Bill: [19:21] Well you've been living in Tennessee for ever at this point it feels like.  Pastor Newms: [19:27] It's been just like two years three years almost.  Pastor Bill: [19:33] That's what I said forever.  Pastor Newms: [19:35] That's not forever you are exaggerating.  Pastor Bill: [19:44] I said feel there's no time there's no exaggeration when you say feel it's just you're expressing how you feel.  Pastor Newms: [19:52] That's that's valid all right, so I think we're warmed up yes Biggs my favorite hat is my Fedora I need a new one that Fedora is actually, it is that it is at its end it has it has it actually irritated me during the wedding and, Serafina ended up wearing it for a large part of the day because it has gotten smooshy to a couple times and the fabric is not, taught anymore and it's just it feels wrong oh my head because of age but yes I love fedoras.  Pastor Bill: [20:37] The age of the hat or the age of the wearer.  Pastor Newms: [20:39] 30 second buffer 30 second buffer 32nd and for those of you who don't get that joke we actually do that after we cut off, the podcast we do a 30 second buffer for our live people for those of, I haven't made that joke in a while so in case you're a new listener that's how we sign off for this thing and so, that's my cue that I don't like what Pastor Bill saying and I'm leaving.  Pastor Bill: [21:12] That's what he does when he doesn't like what I say.  Pastor Newms: [21:14] I'm out. So tonight tonight we are talking.  Pastor Bill: [21:27] Nah.  Pastor Newms: [21:30] I titled tonight, the church is supposed to do what and for some reason on Twitch I put two question marks I don't think I did that everywhere but on Twitch I I put two question marks so obviously I was very.  Pastor Bill: [21:45] Perch cats which got a little something extra special.  Pastor Newms: [21:49] I think when I deleted the one row to put in the new row that I copied from you know I, didn't delete the question mark So it got to where everyone got to and I don't know it yet one of the other, so you know we've been on this six week Journey quote unquote.  Pastor Bill: [22:15] The six big Journey that we took the three week Hiatus from to do a.  Pastor Newms: [22:19] Yeah that we've taken other breaks from so it's really been you know which is really funny because so here's the thing like I decided to do the six-week study on discipleship because we were doing the kingdom disciples, study book for my family bible study that we do with my extended family every Saturday, it's always like oh since I'm being the big face will do this at the same time and, didn't like a week got missed in another week got missed and then a week got missed here that didn't get missed there and then a week got missed here and then we took a three week break but then because of that the same time so actually Saturday this past week was actually our last session here too so for both the six-week Bible study was really like 12.  Pastor Bill: [23:11] In both places for different.  Pastor Newms: [23:13] Both places for completely different reasons but started, ended at the same time which is really really weird and just so everyone knows our next.  Pastor Bill: [23:26] Or is it Providence.  Pastor Newms: [23:29] What show was I watching what show is that what was I watching or reading where they were talking about the fact that I don't believe in coincidences, remember, I was watching something and they were like there is no such thing as coincidence probably but I remember what I was watching so I was trying to quote something and now I don't remember what it was and I don't think it was, the show Lucifer from DC vertigo but, it might have been the Netflix show I was watching that with our friend says this last week anyway so the last part of our discipleship, talk is the church's role in discipleship last week well two weeks ago now we talked about the family's role, in discipleship and how as a family you know we should be discipling and this one is on the church's role and so.  [24:35] You know there, are so many things you can look at when you're looking at the church or when you say things like the church's role you know what we should do with the church and we discussed this a lot several weeks ago, on our state of Theology of where the church is and where the church should be in certain facets and this is a you know something we talked about a lot and in our current climate of, the world we live in it is something being talked about, a lot as well is the perception of the church and the way church is done and lots of things like that, and it's so we're going to kind of tonight looking at as far as from A discipleship standpoint what should the church be doing which, the funny thing is is the church should be creating disciples it's the thing as a Capital C church as followers of Christ it's, one of the things that we are commanded to do one of the only things that Jesus actually like States go do this no qualms no, qualifiers note you know Go Make Disciples yeah like it's one of the things that the direct you know. Action that he told us to go do Go Make Disciples and so.  Pastor Bill: [26:03] And when we say when we say the church we don't mean. The organizations and institutions that call themselves churches we mean the people that literally make up the church.  Pastor Newms: [26:19] The church yeah exactly yeah and and there is a distinction in that.  Pastor Bill: [26:26] About the inclusion houses job to make disciples as an organization, my job and news is job and everybody that's watching this or listening to this as you know participants in what the occasion has to do, it sold our jobs have you met.  Pastor Newms: [26:42] Right.  Pastor Bill: [26:43] Type of because we are the church.  Pastor Newms: [26:48] And one of the big things, and it was interesting one of the one of the things that you know dr. Evans said in this study is if you're not making disciples if you're not working towards that as a person you're not, in church you're just, I'm a mess it up you're just Gathering you're not you're not there for the right reasons which is to be discipled to then disciple you know the, the whole thing about the lecture style that most modern churches have gone to does not lend itself to, making disciples in a certain way some people, that is how they learn it is how they grow it is how they they can, be discipled in that way for the majority of humans a lecture series is not, how they're really going to click on it and the bigger issue in that is to become a disciple is not, to listen and understand it's too then act on it.  Pastor Bill: [28:10] This is why we have so many people out in the world who have college degrees, and figure out simplest instructions it's because college is all lecture style and they just want a piece of paper that it actually will learn any, because that's not how everybody learns only a small percentage of people learn in that environment.  Pastor Newms: [28:32] Yeah most people are Hands-On and so when we, like that's where that's where for me for me actually the lectures work to a certain degree but, the reason they work is I don't trust anyone I don't trust myself I don't trust what I think I don't trust what other people think I trust no one so when I'm listening to a lecture I'm constantly going and thinking on it and thinking of the things I've learned in the past and thinking of the things I've and and, that is the ADHD superpowers where I can still pay attention, to what's being said and do that whereas a lot of people can't.  Pastor Bill: [29:21] Big issue with lectures, is and wee wee and I mentioned this earlier with you is my big issue with lectures is somebody will go into an analogy about football around go, they started a football analogy I'm going to tune them out until they're done with that analogy because I don't know anything about football, so I'm not getting anything out of this anyway so I usually go off into my own little world until my brain takes out that they stopped talking about about football and that's your loss, or they start talking about, troubles they have it a hotel because they were at a different Hotel before my brain goes that's not applicable to me and I just don't hear what they said.  Pastor Newms: [30:03] Which is something that does happen and you do that also with just normal conversation, me and says got into a slightly heated conversation earlier this week because.  [30:21] Something was said that, that flips me the wrong way because of the connotation of a word when he was using the diction of the word he was correct in his diction but to me he was completely wrong in his connotation not because of his connotation but because the connotation of how the word actually exists today and so you know and in his, worldview and his circles that he runs in he doesn't experience that, whereas in where I run it's a completely different, grouping of circles in people in you know and so it's interesting to see even those types of division in, in conversations which is why so much of the of the New Testament Church and so much of what, we've tried to do with the occlusion house and what is needed, overall is that small group format of coming together studying together learning together talking it through to make sure we all.  [31:34] Not agree but are on the same page of understanding of okay that's what, that's what it could mean or that's what it might mean or that's what it means to me and that's what it means to you and cool when it's not a, you know one of the one of the big ones the little things that we sometimes split whole churches about, and refused to work together but it's it's that aspect of as a church we should be you know, those small groups are what's important the people the relationships that you can build is what churches the when I say church is this time I mean, individual Gathering of people should be working towards is because the small group is what, the only way to truly disciple you can't disciple on a large scale the large scale is to start the conversation the small scale is where you actually grow, and I think that's something that is.  Pastor Bill: [32:46] The institution is supposed to facilitate. The abilities for the individual to be discipled and then to disciple others it's not the institutions job to disciple and that big you know, top down here Rock bureaucratic way that just doesn't work the church is supposed to facilitate. Believers doing what believes are supposed to do.  Pastor Newms: [33:15] And so, a couple of the other things that you know dr. Evans kind of talks about is the church the capital c Church being Unified, and then so like one of the verses that he used which I actually.  [33:35] I was at a church today and this was what they were talking about two for some reason that didn't go to Twitch I don't know why okay, so the restream client has decided not to pick up twitch at the moment for some reason okay, from him the whole body fitted and it together by every supporting ligament promotes the growth of the Body for building up itself in Love by the proper working of each individual part and, that is what the capital c church is missing so often we've divided ourselves into little groups that only, you know I only like this kind of music so, I go to a church that only plays this music I only like my coffee to be served in a glass that is biodegradable or I only like my coffee to be served in a cup that's hand washed after you someone else's just drink out of it and, anyway I don't understand that one personally but other people do and, not my place to judge them I can disagree with them nicely and and not actually make disgusted faces at them but we have to.  Pastor Bill: [34:56] Agreement here coffee cup piracy I've never coming back here.  Pastor Newms: [35:06] Those are individual aspects in this scenario but, you know we have to be United you know one of the things that I found interesting was you know, there are times and it's happening more and more where churches are coming together even from other denominations and working together because they understand, you know these are the things we agree with just because I think your skirt needs to be 7 mm past your ankle and you think it can be 7 inches above your knee, you know that doesn't necessarily mean.  Pastor Bill: [35:50] Seven inches.  Pastor Newms: [35:51] The tall people they're Giants it happens.  Pastor Bill: [35:54] I better be tall people, sit down with the skirt is 7 inches above your knee there's those hurt me more.  Pastor Newms: [36:01] They're very tall people you know some of those mountain people met and they big people but they you know you.  Pastor Bill: [36:10] I want to be comfortable but.  Pastor Newms: [36:12] So there's those aspects were.  Pastor Bill: [36:17] Love between your legs and that chair.  Pastor Newms: [36:19] We will go back to the hygiene issues, when we come together we have to come together to to move the kingdom forward you know discipling and growing even when we don't agree with each other there's a lot that you know there's, someone said something to me recently and they were like well you know you can't just not go somewhere because you don't agree with them and, that's a hundred percent accurate, to a degree because it's 100% accurate that we have to come together even when we disagree on small things if we're disagreeing on large things, that can be a different conversation because you know you do have to be comfortable where you worship and where you're being fed into but.  Pastor Bill: [37:14] What are those large things that you knew.  Pastor Newms: [37:16] I don't have them all written down at the moment but the big ones for me are you know Jesus being the only way to the father.  Pastor Bill: [37:29] That's the definition of Christianity.  Pastor Newms: [37:31] Right right the aspect of the so Jesus, death Resurrection the fact that salvation is by yeah salvation is by, faith not works not just a prayer you know there is actually that and then. To me those three or two or one or however you want to look at it are really the big ones.  Pastor Bill: [38:12] I'd say number three would be. It's an issue if you say we need to radically love and then you can all that stuff with but.  Pastor Newms: [38:20] I agree but. That's a I agree for me I can't, BM there's a difference between fellowshipping with and being a member of a congregation with as well you know there's a lot of people I will fellowship with that I don't agree with, at all but I know they've got the two that I actually like the 223 that are you know yes Jesus, yes Faith yes Heaven cool like you know we've got the same generic, but like you know there are some things that just woo but, we still have to be able to come together for those things you know there are still times that I've completely disagreed with something, gotten into the word studied it realized I'm wrong, and changed my worldview and that's okay and if we didn't ever interact with anyone outside of our own worldview we wouldn't do that if we all lived in our individual bubbles.  Pastor Bill: [39:33] Well. I've had that happen more than once just getting ready for this podcast, I've got into studying with one worldview and gone oh wait a whole world you on this issue has been unbiblical eager like from friends and started I had to change what I believe now.  Pastor Newms: [39:51] And I agree on that if you.  Pastor Bill: [39:54] Can't happen.  Pastor Newms: [39:55] Individual study but usually it's through discourse and you know studying together. So you know we are you know there's a common phrase sometimes you'll be the only Jesus anyone sees, and that is a true statement there are times where we as Christians we as followers of Christ, we are the only.  [40:31] Cristiano someone might see now the the radical difference to that that I see often is often times we're the only accurate representation, of Christian or we are the only opposing view from the vocal.  [40:52] I will say minority that ends up getting all the air time. On both sides of all issues typically it's the vocal minority that, end up causing more issues in more divisiveness but in churches it happens so often we're like for example what we talked about for three weeks straight of you know the, state of theology so many people have tainted even what certain words mean, in Christianity and that doesn't mean the whole of Christianity feels that way but because some people are teaching it quite loudly, that's what people see people see televangelists people see people who are on, you know the radio people see these certain individuals not the church as a whole that is trying to do the right thing in the right way, we sadly have a lot of us not and so in that as we round the corner of 720.  [42:10] Some of the stuff the church isn't if a church is growing, meaning the building is growing or the the number of people inside building is growing but the people, aren't growing in their faith and growing in their knowledge and growing in being discipled.  [42:37] That that physical iteration of the church is missing it if the numbers are growing up, but the people are staying the same we've missed something if the print if the people if the building, of the church is really pretty but the people Spirits aren't really pretty, we're probably missing something if the people are rotten and just crotchety angry you know, whatever people were probably missing something something you mentioned earlier if the church isn't loving others the church is missing it you know the, it's interesting to see, as I've been visiting churches and listening to things and reading on things trying to find a a church too, attend, to you know Assist in being discipled so that I can continue to help disciple the, it's hard to find an organization that.  [44:01] Is not missing it or is not, not doing something if you if you have a building fund because you just want a new building, or the carpets are Raggedy but you haven't reached out to the hungry or the poor or the lost or the widowed or the you know all the things that Jesus you know blatantly tells us to do and what the New Testament Church did taking care of people who are in need, that's a problem you know if you're spending more money on this than that or if you're not even trying you know I have you know, we've all seen it we all know it it happens sadly and then there are some, individual parts of the church that are doing a really good job of certain of these aspects and that's good, and that's how it should be but we as a whole church have to continue to get there together and that's all I have to say but I know you probably have more.  [45:19] You can't not have anything. We got nine more minutes to fill like that's ever stopped me when I'm the big head that we're short, but do you have anything to add to that any of that.  Pastor Bill: [45:50] I guess I'm just.  [46:00] Sick and tired of all of that. Screaming into the darkness for no one but God Z here.  [46:24] There's no there's no money and there's no popularity and loving people and speaking the truth and. So we just end up in our own little Echo chamber going in circles about things that need to be done and we have no voice of influence anywhere.  Pastor Newms: [46:54] It definitely is frustrating yes I agree.  [47:05] Well if you would like to join us if you're listening to this podcast we record this live every Sunday or most Sunday's 6:30 Central Time, and it's sadly looks like it will not be you know, central time will not be the set Central Time unless something radically changes quite quickly in one of the houses time change will happen again in the spring it looks like but that's beside the point the that's.  Pastor Bill: [47:39] About the time they chose was the daylight savings time they chose.  [47:48] Which was the stupid one to choose to begin with but they still from the jars.  Pastor Newms: [47:52] So they did choose one and it passed unanimously in whichever of the chamber's it was in I cannot remember I want to say it passed the Senate correctly and it has now just been sitting in the house, and has not been discussed talked about or anything which it has to go through both chambers before it can then be sent to the president to become law and so at the moment, no one knows everyone anticipated before this last switch that the law would be passed so that we going into the next year it would be law but it has been just sitting, I'm on someone's you know in the, in the chamber whichever side I can't remember whether it was the house passed it in the Senate that's holding it or the Senate passed it in the house is holding and I can't remember I just actually read an article about it yesterday, but I don't remember but we're going to be here 6:30 whatever time Central is currently, recording this and we would love for you to join us you can look us up on EKK.house to see where you can join us live.  [49:10] And, with that to be part of the discussion as we're talking about you know to try to work through these things together as opposed to just having.  [49:24] The talking head actually being able to interact with everyone through it, and we will talk with you guys next week and we love you.  Pastor Bill: [49:42] Stay safe out there.

Today we are talking about our next C, which is: Cost. Have you ever gotten a DM or email that has no introduction or anything and just says, “What does it cost?” That can be super tricky. Because they are usually asking about the price. However, there are many costs associated with your product or service that are going into a person's mind when they are determining whether or not to give you their money. So hold that thought while I remind you of something. Let's talk very briefly about money in general. Money, in the actual paper sense doesn't hold any real value until we give it value, right? It's honestly just a piece of paper. And now with venmo and paypal and apple cash, we've actually eliminated physical products too. But what gives it value? And who determines it? Of course, we have centuries of social constructs telling us the value of money, and we can also comprehend that the value of money can fluctuate (hello inflation), but if we break it down to it's basics, money only has the value that you are willing to give it. Let me say that again, “Money only has the value that you are willing to give it.” And when you are asking someone to make a transaction with you, you are actually exchanging value. If you have an apple and I have 25 cents and I go to buy that apple, what is happening is that I value the apple more than I value my 25 cents. And the store owner, or whoever has the apple values the 25 cents more than the apple, and so a transaction occurs. Get it? So I want you to remember that. When someone is asking you about the price of your product, they are constantly evaluating the value of the product you are providing. So when I talk about COST, in this context, it isn't just the price of your product or service. When you are coming from your customer's point of view, the COST is more than just the price, it's everything that goes into making a value exchange decision. It could be the cost of their time to implement your product. It could be the cost of brain power to understand how to use your product. It could also include the cost of them understanding how beneficial a product is or not.I know this may sound a little nebulous, but I want you to start thinking like your customer. What additional costs are associated with your product and how can you make that easier for the customer to want to make a transaction with you?I don't know if you've ever seen an advertisement for a crazy deal on flights. Sometimes I'll get a random email or ad that says, “$29 round trip airfare.” Sounds like a crazy good deal right? I mean, if I were to say, “What does that cost?” You could technically say, well it costs $29. But is that true? As a customer, no…it's not just $29. And I'm not just talking about the additional taxes and fees or expenses related to going on a trip, but I'm talking about all of the other costs associated with this offer. Usually the offer is only good within a certain time frame or only to certain cities. Do I honestly want to go to Cincinnati in January? Probably not. Do you see the costs that are going through my brain as a customer? Your potential customers are doing the same thing. They are unconsciously and consciously evaluating the cost…with a Capital C to determine if it's worth the value exchange for them.If you are struggling to sell something that is just SO amazing, then think about all of the tangible and intangible costs that your customer faces when deciding if it's right for them to hand over some cold hard cash.Once you have that information, THEN you can take action and do something about it. It could be creating more awareness, making it easier for them to have access, or educating them better on hJoin The Content CollectiveThe answer behind: "What do I post today?" Before the pandemic, very few banks were interested in small business loans, those sub-$100,000 loans that are the lifeblood of millions of small businesses. But when forced into action with the Paycheck Protection Program banks found (often with the help of fintechs) that they could not only underwrite these loan sizes, they could do it online. That has been a game changer. My next guests on the Fintech One-on-One Podcast are Brock Blake, CEO and Founder, and Denada Ramnishta, Chief Growth Officer, of Lendio. Transcript Hello and welcome to season 3 episode 83 the Berean Manifesto faith hope and love for the modern Christian. I'm pastor Newms. And again this week we are not joined by Pastor Bill but we will continue forward at this time, why are you still on sabbatical thank you the best so, I have to say it's weird we have for those of you who don't join us live, we have a countdown video for five minutes the kind of gives time everyone time to log in and get settled and etc etc before we get started with the live stream and. It's funny because in modern business nowadays because of. You know so many people work from home all this kind of stuff so many of our meetings in business is the same thing where you're like okay we're give everyone just a few minutes to join us as you say that two or three times before you actually get the meeting started and, it really struck me as odd this week as I was doing it too. I realized the similarities between those two things this morning. As I means that this evening as we were going through that. So I hope everyone had a good week I had a good week it was pretty fun got a lot done at work and then I. Played a lot of Pokemon and I did a big thing. That is the first time I've ever done it I did a living Dex for the ones in the actual decks for. Pokemon sword and shield so the 400 Pokemon for. The main decks and then the hundred and. Sorry 210 for each of the two expansions. And for the expansions even though I called it a living Dex I didn't do everyone, if they were in the original living decks so the only Pokemon from the base of the game that I don't have is rude which is a special Pokémon you can only get for an eventand so because of that I don't have them and that the frustrating but it's okay the. And then there's a bunch of legendaries they added that aren't part of the proper Dex but they're just obtainable from the National dex and don't have all of those it was just fun to finally for the first game ever actually complete the decks and while completing the decks actually having all of the Pokémon so that was a lot of fun I finished that actually this afternoon with mr. groggy or the bests help, he uses the best when he doesn't want me to sing the my little groggy song I'm going to be honest I think that's honestly why he does it but that's okay we love him anyway and he's in my phone as my little groggy so it's perfectly fine he can call himself he would like I did, get burned by the sun you can't tell very well. On on the stream because you know my camera actually does a lot of balancing of tones it's actually super dark in my office which is really nice but you can tell a lot on my head. And it is burned and I'm trying very hard not to freak out with the cloth band that actually is touching the top of my head right now and I'm trying really hard not to fidget with it the whole time because it hurts lift my sleeves. You can't see the red though without I mean you can't really there's no good way to. I mean you can tell you just can't tell. But yeah so it's definitely there it's definitely hurts. So yeah that was kind of how my week went and the reason. I got the wonderful heat on my skin was the wonderful best. Offered to let me ride from a little Lego event that we were at with Phoenix. Back home in his car with top down and I have not ever been top down sports car Highway. Writing not saying anything else about that y'all can glean from that whatever you would like as far as. Speeds or recklessness or danger because none of that happened of course because we wouldn't do those types of things and so we did we drove we drove to the house about an hour and a half. Hour 15 minutes or so because we hit some traffic with the top down and I got home and we was fine, and he was like it's I'm so glad you didn't get any burn everyone talks about how easily you burn and you didn't and then throughout the course of the night I just got redder and redder. And that's why he's apologizing because the best feels bad that he got me sunburned which he did not because it was my choice to be in the car you do not drive like a maniac I am just simply saying, it was it was quick there's you accelerate very well and have very good control of your car but it is much different than being in these small cars 4 cylinders and then SUVs that I have driven in the past. That get-up-and-go was a whole lot different so.That being said that was my week it was good I hope you all had great weeks as well Happy Father's Day for everyone out there who is a father my father is actually in the other room because he and Phoenix did a Lego Stream this afternoon together for Father's Day  All right this question is what particular historical document or portion thereof, do you think every American should know by heart. I mean there's a lot that I can answer with this question I feel that we should. Definitely know our history a lot more as far as historical documents. I think everyone should at least understand and know the Declaration of Independence and you know the Articles and the Amendments that are there. Because it's important to learn from our past. But then on the same token from historical aspect I also think we should understand what. Some of the documents that led up to that and what helps us make those decisions and, I just think we should know more about our history overall because we don't and often we are doomed to repeat and are in the process of repeating some of our, issues from the past because we don't learn from them so that's that's that that process is what I got. Does anyone else have anything they would like to say as far as documents are such and And Biggs I will agree fiberglass car with a big engine definitely goes and thank you the best for saying Happy Father's Day all right so let's go ahead and dive into it tonight, tonight you will notice if you have looked down or around or you're listening and so it's written somewhere you'll notice this one is called. I feel like I yeah okay I wrote down a different title than what I put in all of the, I change it at the last minute and didn't update my notes my bad is why all the fighting so. What I really wanted to discuss tonight it's something we've touched on in the Berean Manifesto many times in the past. But I kind of wanted to dig into it again as we're starting this journey through some of. My thought processes in my. Belief system and what orchestrates it not that we don't do that when Pastor Bill is leading but these are more you know. Fully me as opposed to me supporting and me uplifting and me, being part of the conversation this is just my conversation. So I wanted to talk about the why all the fighting so you know we as a culture as humans as people we really like to fight, arguing is kind of in our nature to a certain degree because pride gets in the way and we have you know belief systems that are hard to challenge and we all have, you know bumping heads and difference of opinions and differences of belief and differences of knowledge and, an answer when all that comes together you end up you end up bumping heads with your fellow. In all situations your fellow people that live with you your your family units then your your governmental structures your co-workers your there's always discussions of how things should be done and what they should be done and. That is human you know exerting it's not just human it's animal as well you know exerting your belief system being the next aspect pushing towards that but inside the church, Capital C Church big church everybody we really should be focused on the unity and the building towards something more than the infighting because what's happened so often is we have so many splinters and so many we discuss beliefs and and come to an understanding and continue to work together as Christians despite slight differences that we create. These Jagged off shoots that then because I believe this you can't believe anything else because I feel that you can't. You know so we have all this. That that people discuss and so one of the first places we want to look tonight. And I'm just confirming it because I forgot one aspect. As I was speaking because you know sometimes we have that whole like you know where you're going and then all of a sudden you're like but I feel like I should also talk about this. One of the aspects that that I want to kind of look at is what's talked about in Romans 14 Romans 14. Is we're going to read a bunch I'm just I'm just going to say everyone's 14 here. As opposed to spelling out the exact versus so. When were we're talking about you know things that can cause divisiveness and splitting a lot of times it comes down to at least in the capital c Church it comes down to belief of sin or differences of how we worship so the first one I kind of want to look at is that the differences of sin and in Romans 14 you know this is all talking about judging other. Christian's not necessarily people outside of the faith but people inside so. It starts off Romans 14 1 accept anyone who is weak in faith but do not argue about disputed matters one person believes he may eat anything while one is who is weak eat only vegetables one who eats. Must not look down on he who does not eat and one who does not eat must not judge one who does because God has accepted it who are you to judge another's household, before the Lord he stands in Falls he will stand because the Lord is able to make him stand one person judges one day to be more important than another someone else judges every day to be the same Let each be fully convinced in his own mind whoever observes the day observed for the honor whoever eats eats for the Lord since he gives thanks to God and,  whoever does not eat it is to the Lord that he does not eat it and gives thanks to God for none of us lives for himself and no one dies for himself if we live we live for the Lord if we die we die for the Lord therefore neither we live or die we belong to the Lord Christ died and returned to life for this that he might be Lord over both the dead and the living but you why do you judge your brother or sister or you why do you despise your brother and sister for we all stand before the Judgment seat of God for as it is, for it is written as I live says the Lord every knee will bow to me every tongue will praise to God so then each of us. Is giving an account of himself to God and then it goes on to you know the one people hear about you know do not, judge one another don't put a stumbling block you know etc etc etc etc things that we you know. Kind of other things that along the same lines but different aspects like okay don't do this in front of you know don't go to a someone you know is struggling with drugs or alcohol with a bunch of drugs and alcohol and look at him if you're like it's fine you can do it too that's causing someone to stumble don't do that that's not what this is talking about this is talking about don't judge the person who does take a drink every now and then or who doesn't take a drink every now and then because that's a different belief then yours in this situation there's two big passages you can kind of notice him walking through with the Romans the first is the eating or not eating what he's talking about with that and what he's talking about with that is there was a meat market. And the meat that was served had been sacrificed or blessed or other, religious used in religious applications to another God and so because of that the, certain members of the Roman Church were like okay this has been blessed by another God don't touch it and then other people are like, but I'm praying over it and blessing it for our God doesn't matter what happened before and so there was some infighting about that. And you know Paul comes in and is like guys it's me who cares if you eat vegetables are you eat meat it doesn't matter what you do you know the important part is that we're all here under, God the second is the whole thing about observing the day. Which was talked about as the Sabbath and how some people were respected it in and followed it in different ways and so that's that whole aspect of you know does it really matter the day does it really matter the how you celebrate does it really matter you know he kind of tried to squash some of those aspects especially in. Some Modern churches you know some people celebrate Saturday as the Sabbath some people Sunday some people Monday you know depending on your religious belief of what the last day of the week is and what the day of rest should be or if you even, follow that or if you just have a Sabbath at some point or if you don't follow the Sabbath at all personally I think we all should follow the Sabbath because we need it for our own health that's the example that God set forth is that that whole aspect but I'm not going to judge someone because either they don't or they do it differently than me because that's when we run into this trouble and that's what causes the disunity, in so many of these situations we have so many of the church splinters in so many breakups and so many denominational Creations over small aspects and then we have, people pointing at the other groups and saying things like well they're not saved because they believe something different, they're not saved because this we are when none of these. Majority of these are not salvation aspects and we should not be judging how. Worship or how they you know which laws they decide to follow because God, God gives us the Holy Spirit and gives us convictions that are different person to person to person to person so we should never be judging each other based on you know stuff like this. Now I will say there are times. The chaotic newms is still here just so everyone knows there are times to debate when someone is, wrong in a church like for example. I personally believe in going to church super early on Sunday mornings so that way I can beat everyone else to lunch it's a very important tenets for me there is no reality and no basis and what I'm saying is completely sarcastic but I prefer to beat all the other churches to eat because I don't want to wait in line behind so me personally I believe we should get out on time and not have long Services because I get hungry easily, very irritable when I'm hungry so none of us want that so Jokes Aside.  Why are we fighting about it why are we fighting about little things that don't matter. In these types of situations so on that. Going from going forward to the next passage I would like to talk about is we're going to jump over to Ephesians Ephesians 4 1 through 16. I can't type all of a sudden so you got a Ephsians 412 16. And this is often used about Unity so far as to like in the csb the title of the whole passage is actually Unity. In the body of Christ so you know therefore I the prisoner of the Lord urge you to live worthy of the calling you have received with all humility and gentleness with patience bearing one another in love making every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of Peace there is one body and one spirit just as you were called to one hope for your calling one Lord One Faith one baptism one God and Father of all who is above all, and through all and in all now Grace was given to each of us according to the measure of God's of Christ's gift for it says when he ascended on high he took the captives, captive he gave gifts to the people but what does he ascended mean except that he also descended to lower parts of the Earth the one who descended is also the one who ascended to fill all things and he himself some apart he gave he gave some to be Apostles some prophets some evangelists and pastors some teachers equipping the Saints for the work of the ministry to build, the up the body of Christ until we all reach unity in the faith and the knowledge of God sons growing into maturity with the stature, measured by cars fullness then we will. Then we will no longer be little children tossed about by the waves and every wind of teaching by humans cunning with cleverness in the techniques of Deceit but speaking in truth let us grow in every way into him who is the head Christ for him the whole body fitted a knitted together, by every supporting ligament. Promotes the growth of body for building up itself in Love by the proper working of each individual part now as a lot there I usually don't read that much because I don't like reading out loud but you know the big things there to really call out. We are one body we've all been given the holy spirit all all Christians have been equipped with the Holy Spirit upon salvation and. We were all moving towards one place we serve one Lord we serve one God and Father you know the Grace has been given to each of us as he was needed you know. As we go forward with that he equipped us all for different purposes not everyone is supposed to be. A teacher not everyone is a preacher not everyone is a profit now everyone is you know. To have people working in every single thing some people have more. Giftings in certain areas but not everyone like I don't think I could ever stand up. And it'd be an evangelist in front of you know hundreds and hundreds of people and do the whole evangelism thing the traveling and the the preaching different places all the time and I don't think I could ever do that that's not. That I don't I don't feel that is my calling might be at some point I highly doubt it but could be you never know didn't think I'd be talking and teaching like this ever but you know it's got that whole pastor. Were down here at the moment so you know it works. But we're all given different things, and we're supposed to then work together as one body all of us working as ligaments ligaments move the muscles that we all push forward together to increase. And Advance the kingdom of to advance the the body of Christ to then bring. More people in and disciple them up to allow them to then also be, functioning members of the body not just pushing people towards. Um salvation and never discipling and helping build the people helping them find their gifts helping them we're supposed to making disciples of everyone not just preaching to get people saved it's supposed to be a discipleship to then get them plugged in and become a part of the body moving it Forward also and so it's that whole thing of. Everyone's giving a different part and if anyone is working outside of the body it hurts all of us and that's that idea of the capital c church when we have someone in the Christian faith who is operating. Outside of. Helping us move forward and hindering us and making us trip and fall or stumble or or not move forward correctly you know we have people who. Preach hate and preach you know. Preach that we should you know we've had people from the pulpit all of these people should be killed recently said you know a certain group of people should be this this group of people should be that we have we have these types of people and what they are doing is they're causing. Other people to then look at the capital c Church, as a whole and Christians as a whole and judging us by The Works of certain people and that's that whole thing about, if we're not United if we're not moving forward together in a correct State then that one offshoot causes an issue, um for those of you who don't know me super well. I have some physical issues I've got arthritis real bad for years and years and several other things and so my hand sorry for those that are in. Radio land. My three fingers of my hand on my right side all nicely sit together like a normal hand and then I have this pinky that got broken at one point down here at the knuckle and it's it's off by itself and does whatever it feels like, it doesn't you know I've got a consciously, move it over it doesn't sit where it's supposed to sit like a normal hand it doesn't you know it just it's like hey I'm hanging out way over there and that's what we get when we have someone who isn't You know working together we get we get we get a pinky that's that's acting crazy when you're like dude just just get in line. Just just come on work with us here and it's like nope if you like going over here you know and so that's what we end up getting when we have these people that. are not preaching faith hope love their preaching knowledge. I know everything I'm the best I decide what's going on and then. Hey you know you shouldn't be looking at scripture in the way that you know you should study it you should be listening to what I say. Believe me I'm in the Pulpit I'm the one who's right.  You know situations like that doesn't Lift us up and doesn't build our body and so. I know this is we have I'm going to beat this  this dead horse again here for a second but I want to jump over to 1st Corinthians where's my Corinthians 1st Corinthians 12. I just wrote first Corinthians 12 so we're starting at the top okay First Corinthians 12:1 geon's 12. So now concerning spiritual gifts brothers and sisters I do not want you to be unaware you know that you were pagans you used to be enticed and led astray by mute Idols so that whole thing about mute Idols one thing you think of is is a lot of people serve God's that don't speak to them and we have the Holy Spirit that is constantly speaking to us so that's what he's talking about there. Therefore I want you to know that no one Speaking by the spirit of God will say Jesus is cursed and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit now there are different gifts but the Same Spirit there are different Ministries but the same lord and there are different activities but the same God produces each gift in each person a manifestation of the spirit is given to each person for the common Gert good to one is given the message of wisdom through the spirit to another message of knowledge by The Same Spirit to another the Faith by The Same Spirit to another Gifts of healing by The Same Spirit to another performing of Miracles to another prophecy to another distinguishing between spirits to another different kinds of tongues to another interpretation of tongues one in the same spirit is active in all of these Distributing to each person as he Wills so this is again that situation of we should be working together. Using the gifts we were given just because one person is given the gift of talking and one person is more introverted and so they prefer Prayer because that was the gift they were given their able to pray they have a yearning to pray they they love to to go to the throne you know and and lift up their prayers constantly to you know, everyone is built different and we all have to come together in that and move forward we can't. You know oh well I'm not as good as that person because I don't have their gift doesn't matter doesn't matter as long as you're not the pinky that's running off to the left. The right cuz it's my right hand running to the right and doing something that's against the body because no-one says. No one using the spirit of God says Jesus is cursed no one can say Jesus is Lord except for the holy spirit so don't be the person over here. Running with a false gospel or running with not even not saying everyone means, some of them were taught wrong some of them didn't do the study for themselves some people just believe what they were told and so they then are. Spewing the same belief system I won't call it garbage necessarily but I did use the word spewing so I mean. You can guess what I mean. Spewing the filth that they were taught and just regurgitating it over and over and over again as opposed to studying and digging in and figuring it out as opposed to just continuing a rhetoric to keep the same group of people they have around them satisfied, and I think that happens a lot where then you get a group of people together. They fractured from the mainstream or they are considering themselves the mainstream where they happen to have a mainstream belief system at the moment. And there then pushing that agenda louder than other people who are just quietly. Doing their thing and that's the thing that we have to stop as a Capital C church we have to stand up against Injustice we have to stand up against things that are wrong and and say so we shouldn't have people from the pulpit saying you know this whole group people should die or this people are wrong because of who they love or this person's wrong because of the color of their skin or this person's wrong because of the length of their hair or this person's wrong because they cut their hair once or this person's wrong because they wear, they wear nail polish everyday or this person's wrong because whatever the reason these are just ones that come to my mind. We're rejecting whole groups of people because we just don't like the way they look or the way they act and and then to say something you know. Detrimental from a Pulpit or from your leadership section we should be working together in love and together. Under the faith. and the hope you know we have faith that our belief system is accurate we that's faith if it goes from Faith to knowledge we don't have faith we have knowledge so we use our faith to believe that we're hearing from the Holy Spirit correctly we are we are. It doesn't contradict scripture so we're going with that. You know belief system and we have all these things going and so we walk in that Faith then and that's the key is walking in that faith and that leads me to kind of the last thing I wanted to. Discuss today which is. In Acts 17 and for those of you that have been here a long time really none of this is, new necessarily but reminders are always good as we walk through some of this and in Acts 17.And I somehow deleted my All right here we go, verse 10 is what we're going to start sorry about that as soon as it was night the brothers and sisters sent Paul and Silas away to Berea upon arrival they went to the synagogue of the Jews the people there were more noble than those in thessalonica and, we could read up to see why that's going to like it but you know not going to get into that at the moment. These people were more noble of character since they received the word with eagerness and examined the Scriptures Daily to see if things were so consequently many of them believed in including a number of prominent Greek women as well as men but when the Jews from thessalonica found out that Paul was in Berea they came causing the same issues upsetting the crowds. And the brothers and sisters immediately sent Paula way to stop the stop the issue and he moved on with his journeys I believe they went to. Athens next yes so. You know we are the Berean Manifesto that's the name of the the group you know our our podcast and we are the occlusion house and oftentimes people are like why Berean and. It comes from this section because the bereans Studied the Scriptures Daily they examined the Scriptures Daily to see if things were so so they would they would sit and they would listen to speakers they wouldn't just go that person's wrong. I don't like what they said ooh yeah yeah yeah yeah I agree with that person whichever side you're on. Whatever you thought they would then go back to the scriptures they would go back to what they had at the time. Study it and find to see if it was. Contradictory to see to make sure it didn't contradict and it didn't go against. What it was to help weed out false teachers and you know it's interesting because we as a culture as a Capital C Church in so many ways. I stopped doing that and got to a point where you would go to church listen to the preacher and I heard recently from a Pulpit you know. You should just listen to the your teachers and the people teaching you scriptures because they know what they're talking about and it's like but do they we should be examining at all times. What is being said and tempering it through the lens of. What does the scripture say what does the holy spirit guide you to believe, just because one person's belief system is a certain way doesn't mean someone else's belief system is wrong as we see and talked about in Romans 14. Sorry about that I have talked too long without getting a drink um so you know that's something that. We really have to look at as the capital c Church in Hazard groups of people that are moving forward we have to be one body we have to be United just because we disagree on something doesn't mean we should constantly be fighting about it I have belief systems that I hold that that my certain family members don't or. There are times mean Biggs or me and Phoenix you know get into discussions there are times mean means 80. Who is currently you know away on vacation get into it there are times where me and Pastor Bill it both on stream and and more off get into it about hey I don't agree with what you're saying and here's the reasons why here's the thought processes here's the discussions and come together on it but there are times sometimes you don't come together sometimes it's like well I just think that's okay well I don't okay well is this a Salvation aspect is this an aspect that. That affects our everyday lives or is this just a difference of belief and if it is a difference of belief we shouldn't be breaking up churches and organizations and bodies and such. For those situations we should be continuing to operate as one body of the capital c Church moving forward. So that's all I have that's men to my notes. Does anyone from chat have anything they would like to add to that while I look through and make sure I didn't miss anything. Do do do do for those out there to do do do do do do do okay so. That's really what I wanted to discuss kind of, kind of looking at those types of aspects and you know I think we should all stop the fighting stop the infighting stop that stop the arguing with each other constantly and move towards a more unified body, and if you would like to continue doing that wink you can join us. Every Sunday night when this podcast is recorded if you want to join and be part of that discussion as we move forward. You can join us if you go to our website EKK.HOUSE it'll show on there where we do the live broadcast it goes out to my personal twitch as well as our YouTube and our Facebook that we have and we do those live here in chat as you heard me talking to chat and about chat throughout the evening you can come and be part of the discussion if you feel like something is weird or you feel like something is off or you you want to dig into something more. That can all be done through that or you can also reach out to us on our socials based on that but we would love for you to join us at 6:30 Central Standard Time this podcast then comes out every Wednesday at seven Central and I believe it came out correctly last week I forgot to check because I'm a bad host. Ilona is niet tegen de smartphone, maar ze wil wel veelvuldig en overbodig gebruik ter discussie stellen. TRANSCRIPT: Hi, I'm your host Matt Stauffer and this is Episode 100. One, zero, zero. We've made it! I have not, I was going to say tweeted. I've not podcasted, I've hardly blogged, I thought I was back a couple months ago and then it turns out that babies don't like sleeping. Turns out, who knew? So finally back-ish, it's going to be a slow roll back--I'm not going to promise that I'm 100 percent, but I'm back enough to record Episode 100. Hurray, huzzah, there was much rejoicing. If I wasn't so lazy I'd put sound effects in here. People clapping and cheering. The Five Minute Geek Show! it's a purportedly weekly show about development and everything around it. It's purportedly five minutes long. It's really whenever the heck I can get to it and turns out it's sometimes between five and ten minutes. It's one topic per episode, that's true. About front end, back end, mobile, project management, design, entrepreneurship, whatever. If it's geeky, it fits. I'm glad to be semi back. My son is out of school, and all of a sudden my schedule is rearranged and I'm able to find pockets of time for podcasts and blogs now, so my goal is to get a podcast and a blog out this week. That's what I'm going to try and do. So this week we're going to be talking about community. Capital C community. If you are not a PHP developer this will be a little bit less relevant. If you're not a developer, it will be even less relevant, but it'll touch on some things. There is often a line that is repeated by various people within the PHP community that Laravel, the people in Laravel, the Laravel community, are elitist and that they encourage silos and that what they really needed to do (if they weren't pigeon holing themselves into just being Laravel developers) is be involved in the greater PHP community. People, hoity toity, are proud of the fact that they are just a PHP developer, and they would not be so base as to identify with a particular framework. They say, well, I hope you don't put "Laravel developer" on your whatever. "Why wouldn't you just say PHP developer?" They'll point to the wonderful efforts of people like Cal Evans, and other wonderful human beings whom I love, who do great things to encourage the PHP community to have an identity. Every single time they say these things, I respond in the same ways, and they stop responding when they realize their argument is awful and then somebody else spouts the same crap a month later. So! I'm going to say it out loud here. If you have the temptation to go ham on somebody because they consider themselves a WordPress developer, or a Symfony developer, or a Laravel developer, or whatever else developer because they should be just thinking of themselves as PHP developers... Next time you identify yourself as a PHP developer, I'm going to walk up and I'm going to say, "why are you identifying yourself as a PHP developer? Why aren't you just a web developer?" Then when you go to a web development thing, "why are you are identifying as a web developer, why aren't you just a technologist?" When you go to technologist thing I say, "why are you a technologist, why aren't you just a person?" Why aren't you just a human? Where is the line? You have made up an arbitrary line that you think is the acceptable place for someone to identify, below which is not possible. And we haven't even started talking about geographical location or anything like that. Is it acceptable for someone to identify that they're in the London PHP group? Is that unacceptable because that's a delineation? No, none of this stuff matters. All these groupings are helpful. Now remember, if you've listened to this podcast for any time you understand that a lot of the things I'm talking about come out of faith and religious background. So let me tell you about denominations. In denominations, you have the differences between people of the same faith, similar to sects and stuff like that. Where you have multiple people who ascribe to the same general thing, but are different in certain ways. There's all sorts of horrible things where people have mistreated each other, they've killed each other and all that kind of stuff, with the difference between religions. So, in general, we tend to think of unity as good and division as bad, right? So we often have this naïve concept that if we could just rid ourselves of denominations, and everyone would just be the same faith, the same religion, then all of our problems would be gone. The problem is there are perfectly acceptable, and perfectly normal and often very healthy, differences in opinion, and denominations give you space to find the other people who follow along that line in a different way, and celebrate together with them without having to separate yourselves entirely from the community that you're a part of. Or without fighting all the time. Let's say you have a particular interpretation of how something says whether its Saturday or Sunday. What's the seventh day in the bible--is it Saturday or Sunday? Well, that's going to make a pretty big difference about when your church meets and all this kind of stuff. You could fight about it all day all the time, or you could both do the same stuff on different days of the week, and just split along that line. Split has this negative connotation, but maybe you can just both do great things on different days of the week. Laravel does different things, provides different things, has different priorities and perspectives than Zend. If Zend and Laravel were to mush together into one, you would have a lot of battles because Zend has a very specific set of goals and priorities that are not the same as Laravel's. If they're allowed to co-exist separately, then it's perfectly acceptable for both of these sub groups to be a part of a larger sub group, which is a part of a larger sub group. Why PHP? Why are you in PHP and not Ruby? Well it would be very awkward to have every meet up ever be about PHP and Ruby. Let alone the differences of opinion, how are you ever going to talk about something when everything is completely different? There are healthy things about us finding natural differences in a healthy way accepting and sometimes even celebrating those differences, and also being willing to be a part of the greater community. Now, does me being in one denomination mean I'm now no longer part of the larger faith? No. Does that mean I'm incapable of participating in concepts or meetings, or whatever that relate to the larger faith? No. Similarly, does being a WordPress developer mean you now say I'm not a PHP developer? No. So chill out, take a chill pill, get off your high horse and allow yourself to be in multiples; and guess what, you could be a Laravel developer and a Symfony developer, and a PHP developer, and a Ruby developer, and a JavaScript developer, and an Ember developer, and a React developer all at the same time. It is possible! You can do it. It's like this magical thing where you can be a part of multiple communities and no community police is going to come stop you. It's fine, it doesn't matter. So just enjoy it! Allow yourself to celebrate being a part of whatever communities to get the benefits out of them. Being a part of the WordPress community means you connect with other people who are learning how to make money as a WordPress developer, and that is very different than how to make money as a Laravel developer, right? That's fine. There's nothing wrong with that. Trying to learn how to really up your skills in Symfony and Laravel often looks very similar, but not always. So having differentiation in the community allows space for us to share some resources, and not share the other resources, and that's perfectly fine. Really, this is just me going on a rant. Surprise! That's what this podcast is. Here's the fact that every community has various levels that overlap, and various levels of not overlap, and that is perfectly fine. You can be a part of many communities that are a part of many other communities that are sub groups, of sub groups, of sub groups, and there's no magical line. PHP as a community is not the magical line beneath which everything is an atrocity. Within Laravel, you may find yourself a part of the DDD community, and you may find yourself a part of the Hyper Ruby inspired minimalist Smalltalk community. Those are two communities within the Laravel community and that's okay, because you don't have to do one or the other. It's fine, I'm not actually adding anything new to this conversation at this point, I'm just throwing out random things and saying its fine. Just chill out. Allow people to enjoy being a part of the communities they are. If you want to have a positive impact I think the thing that I hear from these people the most is, well, why don't you participate more in the larger PHP community? They don't say those words, but I think that's what is the inherent. Then say that in a positive, not critical way. Hey WordPress developers, did you know that there's this much larger PHP community that we want to invite you into? Here's ways that we can welcome you. It turns out the best way to welcome people is not by calling them silo'ed whatever heritics. The best way is to be kind, and to enter into their spaces and to learn from them, and to offer what you have to them, and to be nice people. It turns out that's the trick. Be nice. Take care of people. I feel like I'm making voices where I'm mimicking people more than normal, so I hope I don't get too many complaints about how snarky I was in this one. I really do love you all. This is Episode 100, I'm making the heart symbol in front of my chest right now. I also got not a lot of sleep last night, and I'm super caffeinated so that might be part of it now.
