Chińscy operatorzy - China Unicom i China Telecom - do 2020 roku planują zbudować niezależną sieć 5g w 5 miastach. Dr Marcin Jacoby podczas wykładu opowiada szerzej o rozwoju innowacyjnych gałęzi chińskiej gospodarki - zielonej energii, motoryzacji, produkcji smartfonów, rozwoju technologii 5G oraz rynku sprzedaży on-line i płatności bezgotówkowych. Kurt Davis has spent twenty years in Silicon Valley and Asia, working in venture capital and business development for technology startups, focusing on deals with companies like Apple, Microsoft, Spotify, and Sony. But he experienced failure, with his very first business, a mobile game company. Kurt was living in Hong Kong in the early 2000s and from there he witnessed the beginning of a wave of innovation in China, especially in tech. Alibaba, Tencent, Baibu, all of them were launched around that time and were beginning to grow. It was exciting and Kurt couldn't resist the opportunity. He left his job and moved to Shanghai in 2003 to make it as an entrepreneur. He was really into football and hit upon the idea of starting an online fantasy football game app. At first it was going to be a website but, after realising they weren't going to be able to monetise it very well, they then turned their attention to mobile phones. Remember this was 2003, so the early days of smartphones, before the iPhone. All of this was really new, but they did it! They got mobile phone carriers, like China Unicom, to sell their product and also spread into other countries in Asia. So what went wrong? Listen to find out. If you have any feedback, we'd love to hear it. What would make the show better? hello@secretleaders.com Sponsor links: quickbooks.co.uk/secretleaders

Today on The Negotiation, Todd speaks with Justin Mallen, Founder, and CEO of Silk Road Telecommunication. He shares what it is like being one of the few successful foreign entrepreneurs in China, having entered the market during a time when it was far from the economic powerhouse that it is today.Justin says, “China's telecom infrastructure is owned and operated by three incredibly large, state-owned enterprises: China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile. Back then, they had the one key resource which you needed: networking; and they did not want people in their space.”Justin defines success, at least in the early days, simply as “being able to create a business that had staying power”. SRT is a capital intensive venture that was founded in 2000. It is a thriving operation today, but the road to get to this point was fraught with scores of challenges in the beginning. Primarily, it was a matter of turning these carriers—and other gatekeepers—from competitors into partners. Justin's prediction that the internet would take the world by storm in the near future was a driving force that paid off in spades. As a data center business, SRT began with infrastructure as a service as its sole focus: they build, operate, maintain, and own the buildings that house all the servers for the internet. Today, these sites serve as the “heartbeat” for tech companies such as Alibaba, Tencent, and JD.com. Because of recent, rapid advancements in technology, today, SRT also offers platforms as a service (cloud, data, and big data analytics vendors) as a necessary additional layer atop infrastructure.Information traveled incredibly slowly in the early 1990s China. Justin's initial goal was to simply speed things up. The biggest strength he saw in the country's carriers was that they were very eager to invest in building up the infrastructure and capabilities of the internet. The goal of SRT was to develop the infrastructure so that the cost of delivery to consumers could be minimized. Over time, this grew the number of internet users in China to over 900 million in the first quarter of 2020.5G takes the latency—the time it takes for data to move between a device and the servers—down to zero. It makes connectivity much smoother and effectively instant. Driverless cars are incredibly prone to accidents if they use 4G, with its latency of 40 milliseconds. 5G removes this barrier, as well as those of many other industries, which allows for further innovations such as telemedicine and remote surgery.

That thing about Chinese students being pushed by their parents to study really, really hard? “Yeah, it’s true,” says Fei Wen Gang. “Chinese parents really focus on their kids’ education. There is a huge population, so there is a lot of competition,” he says. “Schooldays starts at 7.30 in the morning and often you have classes into the evening.” Six years ago, Fei, now 32, quit his job at China Unicom — “like a Verizon or AT&T” — and moved from the city of Luzhou to “the Mountain,” the northern Berkshire hilltown of Florida where the parents of his wife Ashley live. Their son Lucas was 9 months old.

China's biggest property developer Wanda Group and Internet giants Baidu and Tencent have unveiled a new e-commerce venture in a challenge to industry leader Alibaba ahead of its stock offering in the United States. The three companies will integrate their online and offline sales, with e-commerce services in Wanda's 107 shopping malls, as well as its hotels and resorts. The companies will invest 5 billion yuan, or more than 810 million U.S. dollars to start. The venture adds to competition for Alibaba, who's Taobao, Tmall and other platforms account for some 80 percent of Chinese online commerce. Alibaba is preparing for a U.S. initial public offering that analysts say might value it between 150 billion and 200 billion dollars. The new venture will develop services including online finance which will pose a challenge to Alibaba's popular banking service, Yu'ebao. China has the world's most populous Internet market, with more than 600 million web users. Experts estimated that online shopping might triple from 2011 levels to 400 billion dollars a year by 2015. Tesla Motors in the United States and Chinese state-owned phone carrier have announced plans to build 400 charging stations for electric vehicles in a new bid to promote popular adoption of the technology in China. Under the plan, China Unicom provides locations and basic services for the stations in 120 Chinese cities, while Tesla operates the stations. The two companies will also build 20 "supercharger stations" in some of these cities to offer high-speed charging. Promoters of electric vehicles see China as a promising market thanks to Beijing's support for the technology to reduce smog. But the lack of charging infrastructure is seen as a major hurdle to winning general acceptance. Tesla delivered its first home-made electric sedans to Chinese customers in April and planned to invest several hundred million dollars to build a charging network in China. China has around 78,000 electric vehicles on the road, mostly public buses and taxies. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mike Fox in Beijing. Google's secretive research laboratory is trying to build a fleet of drones designed to bypass earthbound traffic so packages can be delivered to people more quickly. The ambitious program escalates Google's technological arms race with rival Amazon.com, which is also experimenting self-flying vehicles to carry merchandise bought by customers from its online stores. Google calls its foray into drones "Project Wing". Although Google expects it to take several more years before its fleet of drones is fully operational, the company says test flights in Australia delivered a first aid kit, candy bars, dog treats and water to two farmers after traveling a distance of roughly one kilometer a few weeks ago. The video of the test flight can be seen on YouTube. Besides perfecting their aerial technology, Google and Amazon still need to gain government approval to fly commercial drones in many countries, including their home country, the United States. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration currently allows hobbyists and model aircraft makers to fly drones, but commercial use is mostly banned. This is NEWS Plus Special English. An experimental Ebola drug has healed all 18 monkeys infected with the deadly virus in a study. The move boosted hopes that, once more of it can be made, the treatment might help fight the outbreak raging through West Africa. The monkeys were given the drug, ZMapp, three to five days after they were infected with the virus and when most were showing symptoms. The drug also completely protected six other monkeys given a slightly different version of the virus three days after infection. These two studies are the first monkey tests ever done on ZMapp. Experts said it's not possible to estimate a window of opportunity for treating humans, but it was encouraging that the animals recovered even after advanced disease developed. ZMapp had never been tested in humans before two American aid workers who got Ebola while working in Africa were allowed to try it. The rest of the limited supply was given to five others. Ebola has killed more than 1,500 people this year and the World Health Organization says there could be as many as 20,000 cases before the outbreak is brought under control. A few days ago, it spread to a fifth African country - Senegal, where a university student who traveled there from Guinea was being treated.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has urged more transparency in college student enrollment in its affiliated universities. Universities are ordered to release more information about enrollment policies, students' credentials, enrollment results, and complaint channels. Almost 10 million students sat this year's college entrance exam. Enrollment is currently under way, and the new term will begin in September. A scandal involving a corrupt admission official that was exposed this spring cast doubt on transparency and fairness in college admissions. Cai Rong-sheng, former head of admissions at Beijing's Renmin University of China, was arrested in May on charges of receiving huge bribes. He was accused of taking more than 10 million yuan, or around 1.6 million U.S. dollars, to "help" students during enrollment. The ministry banned universities from favoritism, fraud and unlawful charges, among other irregularities. It also vowed to severely punish those involved in malpractice. While Chinese students flock to study overseas nowadays, students from other countries are spending their summer vacations in Beijing to prepare for tests to enter colleges overseas. Ninety percent of the students who took SAT; that's Scholastic Assessment Test courses in Beijing in June were from overseas. Most of these students were high school graduates from the United States and are preparing to enter college there. Many of them were born and raised in China and went to the U.S. for middle school or high school to increase their chance of entering a U.S. university. In the prep classes in Beijing, students focus on getting better grades because training schools on the mainland have mastered the art of improving scores. Lower costs is another major factor attracting the students. New Oriental School, headquartered in Beijing, is one of the many training schools and the largest private education institution helping students to study abroad. Around 5,000 students took SAT exams in Beijing during their summer vacations last year and around 2,000 of them were from overseas. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. The risk refers to the leakage of personal information such as text messages, contact lists and photos by using Apple products. Their reasons to brush off the potential risk range from the ubiquitous imperfection of electronic gadgets to die-hard obsession. Users of China's most popular micro-blogging service website Sina Weibo say that even if the iPhone can extract people's data, it's still not a big deal. Others say they do not worry about it because they are not celebrities or politicians who need to prevent their private life from going public. China is the world's largest mobile phone market where the topic of how the long-awaited iPhone 6 looks like has remained one of the most discussed in the cyberspace. The smart appearance and the values a mobile phone is associated with seem prevail over its safety and security. Although no related opinion poll results are immediately available, comments on the news entry at Sina Weibo appear to be largely optimistic, with occasional criticism of Apple's immorality and the U.S. surveillance addiction. Apple's sales in China went well over the past months. The company's latest quarterly sales in the country climbed almost 30 percent compared with the same period a year ago.
