A cargo ship has crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland, destroying the bridge and dumping multiple cars and many people into the river. A gigantic search effort has now been launched as rescue crews attempt to rescue people from at least seven submerged vehicles. As many of you know the bridge collapsed around 1:30 a.m. March 26th this year after a massive cargo ship, called the Dali, lost power, veered off course and struck the bridge. Six construction workers died in this accident. This episode we recorded before the tragedy took place and before the bridge collapsed. We opted against editing our conversation and chose to leave it in its original state. So, we do talk about the bridge quite a bit in this podcast. WENDY GROUNDS: You're listening to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. My name is Wendy Grounds, and with me in the studio is Bill Yates. We hope to bring you some support as you navigate your projects. We like to also delve into the latest developments that are shaping our world today. And we're thrilled to highlight a remarkable project on this episode. This is called the Key Crossing Reliability Initiative, and it has been named a PMI Project of the Year Award Finalist for 2023. BILL YATES: Yeah, this is such an honor to be able to speak with Cody directly about this project. He was involved in it and led it. Just to step back for a minute, this is a project that Baltimore Gas and Electric, BG&E, initiated. They were replacing transmission line. So, as you guys know, I spent the first half of my career working in the utility space. Utilities have a generation component, transmission, and distribution. Transmission, these are the tall towers that we see when we're driving down the road. Those are high voltage. They cover long distances. And then distribution is that last piece that gets the electricity to our homes or to our business. So, these transmission lines that we're going to talk about are, again, they're high voltage. And in this case, they're spanning across a river. And we're going to talk about eight transmission poles that are put in place to span like a 2.5-mile space. Five of those are in the water, and eight total to get transmission, to get electricity from one side of the river to the next where you have a million customers who need electricity. WENDY GROUNDS: Our guest is Cody Duplisea, and he works for Burns & McDonnell as a project manager working on Baltimore Gas and Electric's Key Crossing Reliability Initiative. Cody's career started in Northwestern Pennsylvania as a pipeline project engineer with National Fuel, and he has since become an integral part of the Burns & McDonnell PMOC for BGE going on nine years. Since joining Burns & McDonnell in 2015, Cody has worked in the development of BGE's Project Controls Organization for the STRIDE Gas Main Replacement Program, as well as managed multiple facilities' enhancement projects.
Ultra marathon swimmer Katie Pumphrey is an accomplished athlete. She swam the English Channel twice, circumnavigated Manhattan and completed the DC Marathon Swim. And in June, she added to her impressive accomplishments in local waters. Pumphrey swam the 24-miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge into Baltimore's Inner Harbor, a route no one else has completed before. She says her love for Baltimore energized her every stroke through the Patapsco River's waters. “I love this city so much,” Pumphrey told Baltimore Banner. “Baltimore should be proud of our city. I want more people to talk about how awesome it is. So, if my swim helps to highlight everything that the city is and has been and can be — I'm just honored.” Pumphrey joins Midday to talk about her momentous journey, and what it means to her to open water swim in her city's own backyard. The 700-foot-wide section of the Patapsco River where the Dali slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge is open for business. Following the incident, the clean-up operation took more than 2,000 people working for nearly 11 weeks. Temporary channels were opened to vessel traffic, though none of them were as deep nor as wide as the Federal Channel. Prior to the incident, the Port of Baltimore was essential to the regional economy and the national supply chain, and the I-695 corridor, of which the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a part, provided a vital connection for people and goods traveling along the East Coast. Over 30,000 vehicles crossed the bridge daily. Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse Located in the inner harbor of Baltimore, Maryland, Historic Ships of Baltimore celebrates more than 200 years of Maryland's naval and maritime history. The site's attractions include the sloop-of-war Constellation, the last sail-only warship designed and built by the United States Navy. Among the other highlights are the USS Torsk, a Navy submarine commissioned in 1944, and the 1936 U.S. Coast Guard Cutter 37. Lightship Chesapeake For lighthouse and lightship buffs there are two historic attractions. The lightship LV116, also known as the Lightship Chesapeake, is a National Historic Landmark and one of a small number of preserved lightships in the U.S. Alexa Price The Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse is a screw-pile structure that began service in 1856 at the entrance to the Patapsco River, on the approach to Baltimore Harbor. The City of Baltimore had the structure moved to its new home on the city's waterfront in 1988. Alexa Price, today's guest, is the public programs manager for Historic Ships of Baltimore.
The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March caused some environmental advocates to worry about potential impacts on marine life and ecosystem of the Patapsco River. But concerns surrounding pollution and environmental hazards near the port predate the bridge collapse. Communities near Baltimore's port have long expressed concerns about pollution in their neighborhoods. Dr. Sacoby Wilson is an environmental justice advocate who oversees projects in Curtis Bay and Turner Station, two neighborhoods near the port. Wilson is a Professor with the Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Maryland, College Park School of Public Health. He is also the director of the Center for Community Engagement, Environmental Justice and Health (CEEJH), and the host of My Block Counts, a podcast that explores the environmental issues that impact Maryland. Engineers say they successful used controlled explosives to remove remnants of the bridge from the deck of the cargo ship Dali. At 1:30 am on March 26th, the container ship Dali struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge and sent it falling into the Patapsco River. Six members of a construction crew lost their lives and the port of Baltimore has been partially closed since. Dueling investigations are underway, with the FBI working to determine whether any federal laws were broken and the NTSB looking to reconstruct the accident and learn from it. The ship is still in place, with the bridge on its bow and the crew onboard, and The Army Corps of Engineers hopes to have the port of Baltimore fully open by late May. One week has gone by since a massive container ship struck a critical support column of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, sending the structure and a group of construction workers who were fixing potholes on the bridge into the water of the Patapsco River. Of the 8 men who were working on the bridge that night, six have been pronounced dead since last Tuesday. When the iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed around 1:30am on Tuesday, March 26, eight men who were working on the bridge at the time were plunged into the cold waters of the Patapsco River. Two of those men were recovered alive, six were not. As TRNN previously reported, all existing evidence points to the fact that these workers—who were working for a non-union contractor, Brawner Builders, filling potholes on the bridge—did not receive any warning from emergency dispatch that the shipping vessel Dali was about to plow into the bridge. As Baltimore reels from the shock of the bridge collapse, as investigations begin into the root causes of the accident, and as we begin to take stock of the seismic economic and potential environmental impacts that this catastrophic accident will have, the families of the six workers who died are mourning an incalculable loss. As Clara Longo de Frietas writes at The Baltimore Banner, “All of the men confirmed or presumed to be dead had emigrated from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador or Mexico. The recent collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore after being struck by a container ship is both a human tragedy and an economic disaster. Christians in the Hindu-majority country often face accusations of forced conversion. The group noted Christians experienced the most persecution in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It said, “There is clear evidence of state-sponsored harassment of Christians in this state, as the police file false allegations of conversion against pastors, even for praying in birthday parties and other social gatherings.” One billion people in India expected to vote Nearly a billion people will head to the polls in India next month. It's considered the largest democratic election in history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to win a third term in a row. His Hindu-nationalist party, known as the Bharatiya Janata Party, is also expected to remain in power. India overtook China as the world's most populated country last year. India also overtook the U.K. as the fifth largest economy in 2022 and is on track to be the third largest behind the U.S. and China. Isaiah 40:15 reminds us, “Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket, and are counted as the small dust on the scales; Look, [the Lord] lifts up the isles as a very little thing.” Air & Space Museum in trouble for mocking pro-lifers In the United States, a national museum agreed to a $50,000 settlement with pro-life tourists. Twelve students visited the National Air and Space Museum last year, wearing pro-life apparel. Museum staff mocked the students and forced them to leave. Patrick Murphy, one of those pro-life students, appeared on Sean Hannity's Fox show and explained what happened. MURPHY: “We got done with the March for Life and we decided to go to the Air and Space Museum. We ended up but the Flight Brothers exhibit. At this time, we were addressed by security guards and they tell, ‘All people wearing a pro-life hat, take it off.' One of the students with us proceeds to say, ‘We use these hats for identification purposes. This is for our group.' “We were approached by a large man as we were walking out, rubbing his hands together, saying ‘Y'all are about to make my day!' He tells us he's got reports saying we said no to taking our hats off and we're in trouble for some odd reason. I then said, ‘This is a violation of our First Amendment right. This is a government-funded building.' He said, ‘It's a neutral zone, and that doesn't apply here.' And we were blown away. We had almost no words.” The Smithsonian oversees the museum and agreed to the settlement, offering the students a private tour. Jordan Sekulow with the American Center for Law and Justice wrote, “This was a clear-cut First Amendment violation, not only of their freedom of speech but of religion as well. Hours before dawn on Tuesday morning, Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge suddenly vanished into the Patapsco River. While many questions remains about the disaster, it will be years before a new bridge is built to replace the wreckage, and many months before a new normal is established for the tens of thousands of people who traveled on the bridge every day. Late Tuesday night, the U.S. Coast Guard announced it was suspending its search for the six people unaccounted for following the disaster. Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said that based on the length of time since the bridge collapsed and the water temperatures, they don't believe that search teams are going to find any of these individuals still alive. At that time, Rodgers did not rule out a return this season, saying that "anything is possible." Most doubted, but it may actually become a reality. According to ESPN, the 40-year-old is likely to be medically cleared to return next week. Rodgers returned to practice Nov. 29, roughly seven weeks since his injury. It was an unprecedented time frame to practice after such an injury. However, Rodgers said he underwent "innovative" surgery in his best effort to get back on the field this season. Rodgers has wowed just about everyone in the organization with how quickly he has progressed. The quarterback and the Jets have said the team's playoff chances will play a role in whether he returns. He likely would not return if they are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, which could happen this weekend. Rodgers recently said there are hardly any risks in taking the field this season. "My thing is, what’s the worst that can happen?" he told reporters shortly after returning to practice. "Something unfortunate again, and then you just slow the rehab down. I think by my own timetable that if you take the rehab slower and a little more deliberate — five months, six months max — is probably the length to get back to 100% if you really take it slow. "My thing is, what’s the worst that can happen?" he told reporters shortly after returning to practice. "Something unfortunate again, and then you just slow the rehab down. I think by my own timetable that if you take the rehab slower and a little more deliberate — five months, six months max — is probably the length to get back to 100% if you really take it slow. My Bigfoot Encounter - Lon Strickler I was fly-fishing for redeye and smallmouth bass on the south branch of the Patapsco River approximately 1 mile downstream from Rt.32 near Sykesville, Maryland. After a few minutes or so, I heard the dog barking and growling. I figured that he stirred up a deer, but when I looked at the direction of the ruckus I noticed a dark hairy creature bobbing up and down in the thickets. I stopped fishing and moved closer to the riffles to get a better look and noticed that the dog stopped barking. Suddenly, I heard a loud yelp from the dog and the creature stood up. The best I could tell is that this “thing” was about 7-8 ft. tall and had dark matted hair. I could only see the body from the chest up because the rest of the body was obscured by the weeds and thickets. I stood completely still and could hear a series of “tick” sounds while observing this creature walk slowly through the thickets towards the woods. I started to follow it and in the meantime I noticed a strong musky scent that reminded me of fox urine.I had waders on so I could only move so fast in an attempt to get a better look at this creature. It simply moved too fast for me. I decided to go back to my car, drive into Sykesville and make an immediate report to the authorities.The local police told me to go back to the area and they would meet me there. The State Police officer told to get back in my car and leave immediately because they didn’t know how dangerous the situation was.
