Send us a textEpisode 695: From Threesomes to Non-Monogamy: One Man's Journey Beyond Jealousy and Shame with author Adam Darrow about his edgy, honest, and raw memoir "Seek the Risk" (affiliate link) https://amzn.to/3KrboVRWhen Adam Darrow met Jane at forty, he thought he was the adventurous one. After all, he'd spent his twenties competing in extreme sports and had explored threesomes—that made him pretty edgy, right? Then Jane, a PhD psychologist who spoke five languages, told him she didn't do boyfriends (and she meant it). Drawing from his background in extreme sports, Darrow spent two and a half years transitioning into non-monogamy, followed by three challenging years of emotional work before finding equilibrium. The journey wasn't easy. When Jane publicly announced their arrangement on Facebook in 2009, Darrow watched his life wildly transform. His best friend called him derogatory names. But over time, he discovered something unexpected: jealousy could be channeled into motivation to become a better partner. What initially felt emasculating became an opportunity to overcome deep-seated insecurities like imposter syndrome and validation-seeking.His memoir chronicles this transformative experience through vulnerable storytelling that includes explicit extreme sexual details and uncomfortable emotional truths, as well as healing and growth. How did keeping emotions bottled up nearly break him? The book explores that question while advocating for moving beyond societal shame around sexuality, relationship conformity, and focusing on personal authenticity rather than rigid beliefs about relationships.Estimated Timeline:  Adam Darrow's Journey Into Non-Monogamy00:03:40 - PhD Psychologist with Unconventional Past00:06:43 - Extreme Sports Skills Applied to Non-Monogamy00:09:13 - Separating Sex from Emotion in Relationships00:19:57 - Managing Jealousy Through Don't Ask, Don't Tell00:22:26 - From Jealousy to Compersion in Open Relationships00:25:11 - Breaking Through Shame and Choosing Each Other00:28:42 - Walking the Beach: Questioning My Limits, book excerpt00:33:17 - Understanding Nesting Couples and Non-Monogamy00:39:43 - Letting Go of Control in Relationships00:46:22 - Vulnerability and Authenticity in Memoir Writing00:51:51 - Writing the Book and Her Reaction00:58:17 - Identity Beyond Sexual Acts, sexuality01:06:44 - Overcoming Jealousy Through Personal Growth01:11:27 - Healthy vs Unhealthy Jealousy in RelationshipsConnect with Adam Darrow: Link to the books website  www.seektherisk.netSubstack seektherisk.substhttps://payhip.com/RuanWillowBooks$0.99 books https://books.ruanwillowauthor.com/ninetyninecentsbookssales Support the showExclusives https://www.buzzsprout.com/1599808/subscribeNewsletters https://subscribepage.io/ruanwillowhttps://linktr.ee/RuanWillow Affiliates Firm Tech 15% OFF with code ruan15 https://myfirmtech.com/ruanwillow BeeDee dating app https://beedee.app/?r=ohfuckyeahThe Fantasy Box DATE30 for $30 OFF 1st box https://thefantasybox.sjv.io/c/6250602/2141126/26423

In this episode of The Light Inside, we delve into the intricate dynamics of limerence and its connection to attachment trauma. Joined by licensed psychotherapist Leah Marrone, author of Serial Fixer: Breaking Free of the Habit of Solving Other People's Problems, we explore how unresolved attachment imprints shape our behaviors and relationships.Limerence, often mistaken for intense longing, is revealed as a response to old wounds, manifesting as hypervigilance, overfunctioning, and a compulsive need to fix or rescue others. These patterns, while appearing as care, often mask deeper fears of abandonment and a struggle for self-worth.Leah shares insights on how early attachment experiences condition us to regulate anxiety by overcommitting to others' needs, often at the expense of our own well-being. We discuss the importance of self-awareness, setting boundaries, and the power of validation in creating healthy, balanced relationships.Throughout the conversation, we emphasize the need for practitioners and caregivers to recognize their own patterns of overfunctioning and to cultivate self-trust and resilience. By doing so, we can better support others without falling into the trap of serial fixing.Tune in to learn how to navigate these complex dynamics and foster genuine connections that allow for mutual growth and healing."Serial Fixer: Breaking Free of The Habit of Solving Other People's Problems"Timestamps:00:00:00 - Introduction to Limerence and Attachment Trauma00:01:15 - Mint Mobile Advertisement00:02:19 - Limerence and Attachment Patterns00:03:04 - Introduction of Guest: Leah Marrone00:03:42 - Childhood Conditioning and Over-committing00:06:02 - Hyper-responsibility and Nervous System Safety00:08:10 - Emotional Suppression and Connection00:10:39 - Threat and Safety in Emotional Responses00:12:48 - Recognizing Somatic Cues00:15:02 - Differentiating Roles in Relationships00:18:09 - Supporting vs. Solving in Therapy00:21:03 - Invisible Labor and Emotional Interactions00:24:01 - Urgency and Shame in Fixing Behavior00:27:04 - Effective Listening and Present Moment Awareness00:30:19 - Building Resilience and Self-trust00:33:04 - Vulnerability in Guiding Conversations00:36:09 - Holding Space and Managing Tension00:38:46 - Monitoring Unconscious Over-resourcing00:41:15 - Social Stigma and Mental Health00:43:57 - Self-martyrdom in Caregiving Roles00:45:36 - Personal Reflection on Fixing Behavior—CreditsFeatured Guest: Leah MaroneHost: Jeffrey BeseckerExecutive Program Director: Anna GetzProduction Team: Aloft Media GroupMusic: Courtesy of Aloft Media GroupConnect with host Jeffrey Besecker on LinkedIn.Music by Aloft Meade and Jeffrey Besecker“Anxiety Effect” by Aloft Media“Falling Down”  written by Aloft Media“Wanting and Waiting” by Aloft Media

It's about being noticed, being considered, and being held in mind.Too many couples secretly believe:“My partner doesn't care about me.”And the truth is…it's rarely intentional neglect. It's almost always a lack of awareness, emotional attunement, and early conditioning that taught people to be “I-focused” instead of “we-focused.”In this episode, you'll learn how to rebuild a culture of care inside your home—one grounded in emotional connection, presence, and shared responsibility.

Drawing from personal stories and the Connection Codes framework, the hosts reveal how early life messages taught us to suppress emotion rather than engage with it—and how staying hidden, even from ourselves, creates internal dissonance. Satch Selden: Surviving The Mirror and Embracing Yourself | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this riveting episode of The Hopeaholics Podcast, Satch Selden, a resilient advocate for recovery with ten years of sobriety as of March 6, 2015, lays bare his transformative journey from a harrowing battle with heroin addiction to confronting a life-threatening eating disorder, offering profound insights into the intersections of addiction, trauma, and self-worth. Adopted into a supportive family by his biological aunt after his heroin- and crack-addicted biological mother gave him up, Satch grew up with material abundance but grappled with deep-seated feelings of unworthiness, exacerbated by his experiences as a gay man navigating transactional relationships and a past as an escort. His addiction led him to 27 rehab stints, culminating in a near-fatal overdose in a San Angelo motel, where a pivotal moment of maternal support sparked his commitment to sobriety. Despite achieving a decade of sobriety, Satch faced a new challenge with a severe eating disorder, losing 30 pounds dangerously and requiring a 60-day residential treatment program in October of the previous year, followed by a four-month intensive program, where he confronted body dysmorphia and learned to reframe his self-perception through therapy and 12-step principles. Now a professor in the recovery field and a beacon of hope, Satch shares his story with raw honesty, detailing how his gastric sleeve surgery complications in 2022 nearly cost him his life, yet fueled his determination to embrace nourishment and fitness healthily, guided by a steadfast sponsor and a vibrant sober roommate who infuses his life with humor and support. #thehopeaholics   #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover  #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #RecoveryIsPossible #Hope #wedorecover Join our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Follow the Hopeaholics on our Socials:https://www.instagram.com/thehopeaholics https://linktr.ee/thehopeaholicsBuy Merch: https://thehopeaholics.myshopify.comVisit our Treatment Centers: https://www.hopebythesea.comIf you or a loved one needs help, please call or text 949-615-8588.
