Professional organizer Ingrid Jansen, co-author of Reset Your Home, explains why clutter is more about emotions than “stuff,” why decluttering is a process (not a project), and how to start small—think kitchens, cupboards, and daily resets—to build your “decluttering muscle” over time. In this conversation, we discuss:Process over project: Decluttering is never “done”—as things come in, things must go out. Start in the kitchen: Fewer emotions than books/photos; clear storage first, then put surfaces away. Daily resets: 10–30 minute habits (dishes, bins, wipe counters, a load of laundry) that prevent weekend pileups. “If in doubt, keep it”: Build capacity with easy wins; you'll be ready to let go on a later pass. Don't buy more bins: The problem isn't storage—it's volume; work with what you have. Decide by favorites: Pull everything out, match lids, pick what you use and love first; the rest gets easier. Clutter personalities: From “harassed housekeepers” to “nostalgic knee-deeps”—self-awareness beats shame. Why this pays off: Less hunting, faster cleaning, smarter grocery runs—time and money saved. Send us a textLet me ask you something. Ever opened your front door to a mini mountain of Amazon boxes and felt a twinge of shame? Like maybe you're buying crap you don't even need just to numb out after a long day? (Same, babe. Same.) This week, I sat down with Ashlee Piper. Sustainability badass. TED speaker. Author of No New Things. And we're talking about why you might wanna stop clicking “Buy Now”… at least for a little while. Now, don't get it twisted. This isn't about being a minimalist monk or living off-grid in linen. Ashlee's approach is funny, relatable AF, and shockingly freeing. We dig into the mental clutter our stuff creates, why malls are cold (WTF), and how overconsumption is totally messing with our health, our wallets, and yes, the planet. If you've been wondering how to shop less, save money, and actually feel better in your own life without giving up fun or flair, this episode is your permission slip to hit pause on the consumer hamster wheel.Ashlee breaks down her No New Things challenge (don't worry, you can still buy groceries and get your roots done) and how making that one small commitment can totally shift your mindset around joy, self-worth, and your damn sock drawer. What's Inside:How shopping became our go-to numbing agent and what to do insteadWhy your clutter might be jacking up your cortisol levelsThe “Super System” that'll help you buy less without feeling deprivedThe surprising ripple effects of not buying anything new (spoiler: it's not just about money)So real talkAre you buying stuff to solve a problem it was never meant to solve? Like, is the third sequined throw pillow gonna heal your burnout? What if peace and pride actually came from not buying more but enjoying what you already have? Are you decluttering your space but still holding onto things “just in case”? In today's episode, we're diving into 5 things you should never keep when decluttering—even if they seem useful, sentimental, or like you might need them “someday.”These sneaky items are more than just physical clutter—they carry emotional weight, identity baggage, and decision fatigue that could be slowing you down in life and business.
Anne-Marie Kingston, from White Sage Decluttering in Clonakilty, Co Cork joins Brendan with some inspiration to tackle the re-organising and decluttering tasks that your home and mind need.
In this message, Pastor Ray challenges us to examine the clutter in our souls that may be distancing us from God. The story of King Josiah in 2 Kings 22-23 serves as a compelling backdrop, showing how a young leader recognized the spiritual decay in his nation and took bold steps to rectify it. We're prompted to consider three types of clutter that can affect our spiritual lives: physical, emotional, and spiritual. Just as Josiah discovered the lost book of the law and used it to guide his reforms, we're encouraged to return to Scripture and allow it to illuminate the areas of our lives that need decluttering. The message draws interesting parallels between our modern struggles with materialism and the ancient Israelites' slide into idolatry, reminding us that prosperity can sometimes lead us astray rather than closer to God. As we reflect on this, we're invited to evaluate our own lives, identify the clutter that's accumulating, and take courageous steps to clear it away, renewing our devotion to Christ.Ridgecrest exists to reach the lost, build the believer, and connect the people of God to the mission and purpose of God. If the chaos of everyday life has you feeling uncertain, or if the unknowns of a purpose-driven project are triggering resistance, this conversation is for you! In this snippet from episode 185, you'll be inspired to embrace uncertainty rather than shy away from it. Kelly is joined by international best-selling author, minimalist pioneer, podcaster, top 25 blogger (ZenHabits.net), and father of six, Leo Babauta. Together, they explore how to live more authentically through a zen lifestyle and how stepping into the unknown can lead to deeper clarity and self-trust. Leo is currently on a mission to change 100 million lives through his uncertainty training program, The Fearless Living Academy, where he helps people who struggle with embracing uncertainty or being consistent in forming positive habits. In this discussion, Leo shares practical strategies to help you move toward uncertainty and take action despite the unknown, manage inner resistance, and rewrite the limiting stories in your mind by leaning into curiosity. He also explains how purpose often lies beyond your comfort zone and how staying in the familiar can hold you back from real growth. Be inspired to tap into what Leo calls the “layer of being” and start embracing the discovery that unfolds when you enter the unknown. Ever kept a gift you don't love just because you felt guilty getting rid of it? Whether it's your mom's hand-knit scarf, an inherited serving platter, or that vintage frame that doesn't match your style, these items take up more than just space; they create mental clutter, too. In this episode of the Maximized Minimalist Podcast, we're diving into the emotional layers of decluttering gifts and why “value” isn't about price. It's about what actually serves you today. What You'll Learn in This Episode: The truth about “value” and why price tags don't determine whether you should keep something. The powerful question to ask yourself before you keep (or donate) any gift. How “gift guilt” keeps you stuck, and how to break free from it. Why releasing unused items creates both physical space and mental clarity. How to lovingly let go of gifts without rejecting the person who gave them. If you've ever felt torn between keeping something “just in case” or letting it go, this episode will give you the clarity (and permission!) you need to move forward...guilt-free. Hey friends! In this personal episode, I'm sharing a behind-the-scenes look at my summer journey. I've been focusing on mindfulness, avoiding rushing through the season, and protecting my energy during our time in the Midwest. This summer has been about intentional living - from setting boundaries in social situations to experimenting with my diet by cutting out added sugar. I discovered some interesting insights about decision-making and how small dietary changes can impact inflammation. Looking ahead to fall, I'm excited about some big changes coming to my business (tune in next week for the full reveal!). I'm planning a photo shoot, preparing for the next Calendar Blocking Blueprint launch, and scheduling family photos. I'm also embracing my "future self" vision - becoming a more present mother and business owner, allowing myself to be softer and more feminine in my approach. This means making intentional choices, like updating my daughters bedroom and being more open to spending on things that matter. There is a mental and spiritual process of decluttering which Carol finds to be very similar to the spring cleaning (or yard sale season cleanup) that we do in our physical space. She and Rev. Bill discuss how the process is the same with our inner life, including our desire to hold on to "stuff" that has served its purpose and is past its usefulness.Thank you for listening to the Practical Prayer podcast - please invite your friends to listen! There's more information about the podcast, and the classes and resources to bring Practical Prayer, more fully into your life at be-the-light.com. This week, I'm answering a listener question from Meg about how to balance style with function, especially when it comes to storage. She wants a home that looks good but also works for real life. I walk through different strategies depending on where you are in the process: whether you're starting from scratch, filling in gaps, or trying to upgrade over time. I also share my thoughts on when it makes sense to go with something quick and affordable like IKEA, and when to hold out for something more lasting. We discuss using placeholders, being honest about your priorities (speed, price, or quality—you can only choose two), and how to avoid clutter by utilizing storage solutions that also add character. I show a few examples from my own home, including how I use vintage crates, tins, and even sugar bowls to keep things both tidy and personal. This is the last episode of the season. We'll be back on August 18th. Also, early bird pricing for the retreat ends August 1st, so if you're thinking about joining me this fall, now's the time. All the details can be found here.
