Please enjoy this gentle, wise permission slip of an episode with my lovely colleague Laura Torres. In this episode we discuss what sensory sensitivity can look like in us adults, strategies to use to protect our own energy (and therefore, our relationships!) and soothe our overstimulated nervous systems within the logistics of our lives. We discuss what boundaries really are, how to send people's energy back to them, and how to better honor our own body's messages about what we uniquely need, moment to moment. If you want more Laura in your life (you totally will), she is launching her 21 day Judgement Detox today to reset our neuropathways towards more self-compassion and acceptance. She has found through her many years working in her clinical practice that a foundation of self-compassion yields endless benefits to us and our people. New Mom Naturopath: Postpartum, Mindset, postpartum mental health
DATE: Aug 3, 2023 PODCAST NAME: New Mom Naturopath EPISODE TITLE AND NUMBER: How to handle Judgment as a New Mom, epi # 27 As a mom with a child going through clubfoot treatment, judgment was assumed everywhere I went. My son was wearing casts from toe to thigh as an infant. People automatically assumed something happened. My gut reaction was a total shame, as people assumed I did something to my child. I harmed him or neglected him in some way. But in reality, I was making a huge sacrifice of my son's postpartum snuggles so that he could walk. In this episode, I walk you through the steps I took to help myself deal with judgment from other mothers clearly so that you do not have to take on the judgment of others. Ignore [8:12] The easiest thing to do is to let people think whatever they want about you as a mom. You cannot control others' opinions and know you are doing an excellent job. But this can be super challenging because, as a new mom, you are filled with doubt. But I am here to tell you, you can ignore others' judgments. You do not owe anyone a reason for making your choices as a new parent. Period. Educate [9:19] Sometimes I wanted to take the time to tell people about my son's condition, and this is an excellent time to let people know that sometimes their questions are not as benign as they think. It is never ok to assume I harmed my child, even if they are undergoing medical care. Remember, you do not owe anyone an explanation for how you choose to parent, but sometimes there are windows of opportunity to help people grow. Look in the MIrror [10:29] Ugh, I hate this one. Yes, sometimes moms would come up to me and say, " My son has a clubfoot. You are doing a good job, Mom. And they had been staring at me for 20 minutes. That whole time, I had been judging them, thinking, how dare you judge me and my son's treatment? And then I realized they were empathizing with me! How are you letting yourself feel others? How are you assuming someone is judging you? I learned this from the Judgement Detox from Gabby Bernstein. I encourage you to check that book out for more details on clearing judgment. It is not easy, but it is so worth it. _____________________________________________________ Are you worried you won't be able to prioritize yourself this time? I know you want to be the perfect mother. To change all the generational trauma that has run in your family for so long? What about those moments when you feel like giving up? What if you had someone in your corner cheering you on? Are you cheering for a better future and helping you become the mom your child deserves?
Being a student of Gabby Bernstein's I bring in some of her work from “May Cause Miracles,” and the “Judgement Detox” for some resources. I also talk a bit about the power of tapping, or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and how that has provided me with profound healing. It is spring in the norhtern hemisphere and this calls for an inner and outer detox. Spring cleanse is not just about the stuff in your house or garage, it is a cleansing of your thoguths, old habits, patterns. In this episode I share with you a part of my judgement detox journey and I share some great ideas and tips for you if you are curious to do the same. We are all judging, all the time. We are giving things names and labels and by that we are judging them. We are judging people we don't know, we are judging people wehold dear to our heart, and most of all we are judging ourselves. The inner critic is very active. The first step is to become aware that we are being judgmental, that we hold grievances, that we are being hard on others and ourselves, and then from this observation we have the chance to choose again. What would love do? We can change our behaviour and attitude. This inner cleanse is an ongoing process, it is for a life time. It is the most rewarding thing you will ever achieve in your life. I LOVE this soul sister. Gabby Bernstein makes me laugh. Her honesty is refreshing. Sometimes I look at her and think I’m witnessing an honest-to-goodness, real-life angel. But when this #1 New York Times bestselling author of THE UNIVERSE HAS YOUR BACK, and five other bestsellers sent me her latest book, JUDGEMENT DETOX (dropping Jan. 2nd from North Star Way), I didn’t think I could do it. I figured I had zero chance of embracing, much less TALKING about a subject I could barely stomach. Detoxing my judgment? Are you kidding me? When it comes to eating, I’m all about detoxing. Give me a juice fast any day of the week, and I’ll pucker up and chug the slimiest of swamp grass. But emotionally, I’m in activist-mode, #metoo-ing and marching with chin held high. Additionally, I live in a part of the world—Los Angeles—that’s experiencing its worst fire season ever, in December, mind you; at a time when our administration’s rolling back environmental protections with the speed and ferocity of our Santa Ana winds. Not judge? Not interested. Except, I know better. Anger and judgment provide an energy boost, but the pump is temporary—certainly no long-term strategy for wholeness or happiness. What if Gabby has come up with a way to be nonjudgmental AND outspoken? More peaceful while more vocal (and effective)? A girl could hope. I had to give her a fair shot. Not to mention, I knew we’d have one hell of a writing and publishing convo. Because girlfriends can talk shop! And we’re mad crazy in LOVE with this industry. Gabby does not disappoint. Her candor—about her writing insecurities and internal and external fixes—will not only make you laugh and surprise you, but will help you better create, receive, and navigate your own publishing prowess. It is my great honor to welcome you into one of my favorite chats yet. As I reflect on the blessings of the past twelve months, this show leaves me shaking my head. Tom Hanks? Van Jones? Glennon Doyle? Dean Koontz? And Gabby? I’m not entirely sure how I got here or where we’re going, but my heart overflows with each interview and download. Thank YOU for sharing your time and love and curiosity with me month after month. I wish you and yours the Happiest of Holidays and a coming New Year that will somehow surpass even your brightest and most beautiful hopes and dreams. God bless, Linda xx P.S.
