THE STAN BORESON-TENNIAL fun continues with this BORESON BONUS EPISODE, courtesy of Tom McArthur, who produced this circa 1981 half-hour show featuring an interview with Stan plus lots and lots of deep cuts from the Boreson catalog. As a part-time work-study employee, I suggested shows on Stan Boreson, the Irish Rovers, and others - and they let me do them! Those were the days of old-school audio editing with grease pens and razor blades. “When I was a little girl, I used to dream as a man, because I wanted to do things that women didn't do back then such as traveling to Africa, living with wild animals and writing books," said Dr. Jane Goodall. We're looking back and reflecting on what was the five year anniversary of the start of the “stay at home” orders and lockdown and the start of Covid. Speaking of medical things, and spring, sister/co-host Kerry shares facts about the lotus flower and its symbolism of rebirth in nature and science, which leads to celebrating March being Kidney Health Month as she and her dad recall the rebirth and fresh start of the kidney transplant Kerry received from him, a rebirth of sorts. Kerry shares a health update with her kidney and levels being as stable as ever. Kerry in blue and our International Women's Day edition guest Jane Piper in red, like the Radio Western sign in the background, brother/ally/co-host Brian starts the second half of the show reading the Be My AI image of the two ladies posing in the lobby of the studio after, as we like to take photos with our live and in-studio guests when we are lucky enough to get them, as we look back on the previous week's episode and the discussion with restorative justice activist Jane. We've managed to post the actual photos even with the accessibility issues that come along with social media these days. The second half is dedicated to what's going on in politics, both provincially and nationally as we share concerns about our premier receiving a third win last month, even with his silence and lack of action on matters concerning the disability community. Last week's guest Jane spoke a lot about accountability and the lack of it in our society, these actions or lack of that politicians often are modelling and still being voted in by those who don't consider marginalized populations. Also, we finish up talking about the Canadian Disability Benefit set to come into effect this summer and a federal election on the horizon, we share more about the CDB and provinces like Ontario which has not yet promised not to put in clawbacks and Alberta which has put in the barrier of clawbacks to the already set provincial benefits. Organisation Disability Without Poverty is working to pressure politicians to live up to the promises to combat disability plus poverty across the country. “Green alligators, long neck geese, chimpanzees.. We begin the show with a song about these animals, including the ones Jane Goodall worked with, the featured woman in history for the month of March and finish off talking the spring promise of an upcoming baseball season. Today though, we're unfortunately celebrating St. Patrick's Day without our Irish co-host Barry and Oyster the guide dog with us live, but they'll be back, but so we've started off the show with a silly song from our childhood - The Unicorn Song, The Irish Rovers version proving that spring is on it's way to green things up in honour of our Irish connection. Christmas is a great time to do just that. We Celts have long had an important relationship with the land and our environment. So I'm gonna offer a bunch of thoughts in the coming months. l read an article on “What's The Most Sustainable Christmas Tree?” You can find a link in the shownotes. One of the most-interesting things I read was about Artificial Trees. You might think they are the most-sustainable. But it turns out that they are typically made with some of the worst, most-toxic types of plastic, polyvinyl chloride (PVC). My family prefers real Christmas trees. But there's always a catch, isn't there. The challenge with a regular tree is finding one that is sustainably sourced. Meaning is it shipped from across the country? Or is it locally grown? Or even better, is it a tree you can replant in your yard when the holiday is over? I'll be honest. Replanting is more than we will do. However, did you know you can rent a Christmas tree? Yeah. That's what I said when I read that. It's not available in all areas. But it is possible to rent one. Then it will be planted afterward. If you're artsy, maybe you can build your own Christmas tree. You could use a plant around the house or build a tree from scrap lumber around the house. Do a search for Christmas tree alternatives and you'll find a ton of options. As for disposing of your tree, don't send those Artificial Trees to the landfill. Instead give it to someone, donate it, sell it or repurpose it. That's the best way to keep it out of the landfill. The same goes with regular trees. Sustainable Jungle writes: “Real trees that end up in landfills can be detrimental to the environment. Sylvester Stewart was born in Dallas, Texas, but moved to the Bay area of California before becoming a multi-instrumentalist and changing his name to Sly Stone - the primary driver of the group Sly and the Family Stone.  This was one of the first integrated groups, and one that crossed many genres.  They played what would become known as psychedelic soul, but you can trace the origins of funk, soul, and psychedelic music through Sly and the Family Stone.The first Family Stone album was called “A Whole New Thing,” and it caught good critical coverage.  Unfortunately it was a commercial failure.  Clive Davis asked for a more pop friendly sound, and Sly Stone created an approach to their second album, Dance to the Music, which followed a formula.  Each lead singer would take turns on lead vocals or sing together in unison, the songs would feature a prominent solo for the instrumentalists, and the lyrics would appeal to a wide audience even though they would still focus on peace, love, and opposition to racism.  The group really did not care for the formulaic approach of this album, but it worked when it came to commercial appeal.  “Dance to the Music” became a top 10 pop hit, and it inspired several groups to gravitate towards psychedelic soul, including the Temptations, the Impressions, and the Four Tops.Sly Stone is the primary driver of the group, writing almost all of their songs, serving as a multi-instrumentalist, and as a primary vocalist.  His borhter Freddie Stone is on vocals and guitar, and his sister Rose Stone joins the group for the first time on this album.  Other members are Larry Graham on vocals and bass, Cynthia Robinson on trumpet and vocals, Jerri Martini on saxophone, Greg Errico on drums, and backing vocals by Little Sister (Vet Stone, Mary McCreary, and Elva Mouton).Sly and the Family Stone would release a number of songs to hit the top 10 in the Billboard Hot 100 in the years to come.  The follow-up album to this one is called "Stand!," and is considered the band's high water mark, along with their performance in 1969 at Woodstock.  The band would encounter instability and drug problems as time went on, with the original group dissolving in 1975.  Sly Stone would continue to record as "Sly and the Family Stone" for many years afterwards using rotating musicians, until drug problems basically forced him to retire by 1987.Bruce brings the early funk for this week's podcast. Are You ReadyThis song is an expression of opposition to racism with lyrics like "Don't hate the black, don't hate the white, of you get bit, just hate the bite.  Make sure you heart is beatin' right."Ride the RhythmThis song starts off side two of the album.  It is a straightforward dance song, and has some obvious comparisons to James Brown.  It has a nice mix of horns and "wah wah" guitar.Don't Burn BabyScat was an early precursor to rap music, and this track is a good example of a rapid rhyme scat.  The eastern feel is also reminiscent of George Harrison.  "Don't burn, baby, burn.  Just learn, baby, learn."Dance to the MusicHere is the big hit off the album, and the first Sly and the Family Stone single to reach the top 10 on the Billboard Charts, peaking at number 8.  It is a straight up party record, but was also one of the most influential songs of the late 60's.  The formula used by Sly Stone to make the songs on this record are clear here, even though he and the group did not like that approach. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shape of Things to Come by Max Frost and the Troopers (from the motion picture Wild In the Streets)This dystopian comedy-drama became a cult hit of 1960's counterculture.  Max Frost and the Troopers was a fictional rock band in the film. STAFF PICKS:Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing by Marvin Gaye and Tammi TerrellLynch starts out the staff picks with a smooth grooving song off the soul duo's album “United.”  Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced this song, which became a hit within a week of its release, going to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart.Anyone for Tennis by CreamRob brings us the theme song for the 1968 film “The Savage Seven,” an outlaw biker exploitation movie.  Eric Clapton's lyrics depict a callous disregard for all the turmoil going on in the world, with the singers discussing going out for a game of tennis while everything disintegrates around them.She's A Heartbreaker by Gene PitneyWayne features an early 60's crooner who turns to a Motown sound for this go-go hit.  It peaked at number 16 at the time.  It is about a guy who is continually drawn to a woman who breaks his heart every time.  Love Is All Around by The TroggsBruce's staff pick is probably most familiar to fans of the Christmas movie "Love Actually," where an old rocker converts it to a cheesy Christmas song called "Christmas Is All Around."  The Troggs' lead singer Reg Presley wrote it in about 10 minutes, inspired by a broadcast of the Salvation Army Band performing an evangelical song called "Love That's All Around." NOVELTY TRACK:The Unicorn by The Irish RoversThe Irish story of how the unicorn missed its appointment with Many saw the dark side of the American dream, but none wrote about it like Jim Tully. Having spent six years of his childhood in a Cincinnati orphanage, Tully returned to his hometown of St. Marys, Ohio before climbing aboard a freight train in 1901. Drifting across the country as a "road kid," he spent his teens, sleeping in hobo jungles, avoiding railroad cops, and haunting public libraries. After six years on the road, he settled in Kent, Ohio where he boxed professionally and began to write. Following a move to Hollywood where he worked for Charlie Chaplin, Tully issued a stream of critically acclaimed books that serve as a dark and astonishing chronicle of the American underclass. Having established himself as a major American author, he turned his attention to Hollywood writing dozens of articles about the movies, often shocking the Hollywood establishment. Along the way, he picked up such close friends as W. C. Fields, Jack Dempsey, H. L. Mencken, and Frank Capra. He also memorably crossed paths with Jack London, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, and Langston Hughes. I look forward to each episode. My wife and play it in the car and at home. This is John McCann, on stage at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle Irish Pub in Pittsburgh, on July 15. John is a regular there, and my family, friends and I always enjoy his shows. John is helping to teach our 11 year old son how to properly clap along to what our late friend, Terry Griffith, described, in jest, as annoying Irish audience participation songs. Sophie Wildman - Gurung emailed: "Dear Marc, I thought I'd write as I've been listening to your podcast this afternoon as I tie up the first plants in my new garden in Somerset (UK) in holes kindly dug by my magical friend Bangles (Woodland Folk). It was Bangles who first introduced me to your podcast shortly after we first met last November. We met when I was then living in Wells and he was busking 'Troika' by Sergei Prokofiev which was the peice of music I had been looking for, to fit in with 'I believe in Father Christmas' by Greg Lake, that I had been working on. Since then we have been jamming together regularly (mainly folk), often at his spot in the woods, sometimes around the folk nights nearby, with him on his fiddle and me on folk harp (22 strings) and singing. You recently played a recording he'd sent in of some crows so I thought I'd send in one he did of me playing a verse from 'Longlife and Sucess to the Farmer' (quite appropriate for this time of year and my afternoons activities although as an advocate of 'no - dig gardening' I'm not a fan of ploughs,) accompanied by probably the same crows  -  warning us if there are walkers nearby. Maybe with a bit more practise we'll get 'I believed in Father Christmas' together to send you, fingers crossed in time for Christmas! Really enjoying your podcasts, thank you. I've been a fan of Celtic music as long as I can remember. My family is originally from Cornwall which may have something to do with it and obviously lots of music for lever harp (which I've been playing since I was 10) is Celtic. In this special Irish family history episode we take two letters from our Green Room members. We chat about the approach they should take to uncover more about their respective Irish ancestral homelands.The first letter comes from one of our members in Australia and shares the story of her Irish Irish ancestors. She wonders how to go about discovering the actual origin for these ancestors in Ireland. Mike shares his approach - and comes up with a target destination!In the second letter we chat about how people often jump back to the Irish records too soon - and often jump to incorrect conclusions. Mike takes a letter from a member from the USA. They are sure that their ancestor originated in County Cork - but Mike points out that some of the evidence just does not stack up. I am among the listeners who you once called – “the original iTunes 1,000”.  I think I started listening to your podcast at the same time I discovered iTunes. Figuring out how to download your podcast is the basically all I know how to do with my iPhone.  I am not any good with this social networking stuff.  In fact, I am not even certain if I am on the right website right now.  This message will likely shoot pass the Serenity and end up in the nihility of empty space.  But I will keep typing in the event this message somehow ends up on your desk. I literally listen to every one of your podcast at least once a year and more likely two or three times a year.  Before you get a restraining order, let me explain. I have a small goat dairy with about 15 goats.  I play your podcast for several hours a day, several days per week.  I download between 10 to 20 podcast every other week.  My sound system loops them over and over again, Monday through Saturday.  On Sunday I put on a playlist of religious music for the kids. Your biggest fan is my #1 goat, MayBelle.  If I can figure it out, I will attach a picture of her.  You might say I am writing you in her behalf.  MayBelle really likes the lovely voices of women singers.  Sometimes you catch her taking a pause to listen to an angelic voice.  She will stand in the doorway of the barn, where the music is the loudest, and sway back and forth, just listening to the music. And sometimes a song will make MayBelle throw a hoof my way.  MayBelle listens to your podcast while I am milking her.  She normally stands peacefully; but when you play some punk rock Celtic music; the change in tone startles her and she starts kicking. So since you keep asking for feedback, here it comes.  You might want to consider doing a shout - out before you start playing the more heavy, rock - and - roll music.  Say something like  -  “Hey MayBelle, here comes a head banger!”  This way she can go to her happy place for a while, or at least I get a cue to watch out for flying hooves. When I am not around the barn, I like to listen to your Pub Songs podcast.  In fact I am listening to Sci - Fi Pub Songs Podcast #265 as I type this message.   I don't play these podcasts in the paddock because some of the songs and stories have adult content that are not suitable for kids.  {just kidding  -  maybe} A little more feedback.  I really like the way you link the singers to your podcast.  You introduced me to the Wicked Tinkers, Boston Blackhorn,  Irish Rovers, Three Mile Stone –  just to name a few.  Your podcast makes it easy to find their websites and download songs for my eclectic collection of Celtic tunes.  I even downloaded some of the headbangers that make MayBelle's ears bleed. Clare Island: This island off the coast of County Mayo was the base of operations for Grace O'Malley and her followers. Visitors can tour the island, visit the remains of O'Malley's castle, and learn about her life and legacy. The Westport House and Gardens: This historic house and estate was once the home of the Browne family, who were involved in the capture and imprisonment of Grace O'Malley. Today, visitors can tour the house, explore the grounds and gardens, and learn about its history and connections to O'Malley. The Museum of Country Life in Castlebar: This museum is dedicated to showcasing the history and culture of rural Ireland. It includes exhibits on the lives of the people of County Mayo, including Grace O'Malley and her connection to the area.
