Guest Manuel Hepfer from ISTARI shares his research on cyber resilience which includes discussions with 37 CEOs to gain insight into how they manage cybersecurity risk. ISTARI and Oxford University's Saïd Business School dive into the minds and experiences of CEOs on how they manage cybersecurity risk. Ask any CEO to name the issues that keep them awake at night and cybersecurity risk is likely near the top of the list – with good reason. With the accelerating digitalisation of business models comes vulnerability to cyberattack. And while spending on cybersecurity increases every year, so does the number of serious incidents. Even the largest and most technologically advanced companies are not immune. CEOs must formally answer to regulators, shareholders and board members for their organisation's cybersecurity. Yet the majority (72%) of CEOs we interviewed as part of our research said they were not comfortable making cybersecurity-related decisions. Manuel Hepfer a cybersecurity researcher from ISTARI sits down to share his story with us. Manuel shares as a kid he was very interested in STEM, and in school he remembered a programming class that he fell in love which made him want to pursue a career in cyber. Studying at the University of Oxford he began working towards acquiring a degree in Cybersecurity and Strategic Management. He found research to be a passion and wanted to share his passion, he decided he wanted to publish, so Manuel published an article in MIT Sloan management review that's titled "Make Cybersecurity a Strategic Asset." He shares that finding a passion, like he did, is the key to working in cyber, saying "I think what I learned at the time is the value of discipline and self motivation. And now you can always come up with a lot of discipline and self motivation, but you'll run out of steam at some point if you're not very passionate about some of the things that you're doing." We thank Manuel for sharing his story with us.

We have reached the end of our adventure and discuss the finale of The Lord of The Rings The Rings of Power Episode 8 Alloyed in our spoiler filled podcast. The Rings Of Power Episode 8 Alloyed Synopsis Episode Written by Gennifer Hutchison with John D. Payne and Patrick McKay Episode Directed by Wayne Chi Yip Series showrunners John D. Payne and Patrick McKay Based on "The Lord of the Rings" and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien In the East, the white witches known as the Servants of Sauron catch up with The Stranger proclaiming him Lord Sauron, and pledging their service to him so that he may lift the veil of his enemies so he may know himself once again and rule over the lands of Middle-Earth. Nori and the Harfoots also manage to catch up with The Stranger, who has been bound by the Servants of Sauron to keep him from using his powers, which he still has little control over. They manage to free him and help him realise who he really is - he is not Sauron but one of the Istari or wizards. They manage to fend off the Servants of Sauron stealing The Dweller's staff, which the Stranger then uses to banish the trio back to the shadow. Meanwhile, Galadriel and an injured Halbrand arrive in Eregion, much to the surprise of Elrond. The elvish medicine soon has Halbrand on his feet and he seeks out Celebrimbor, the great forger, and in their discussions Halbrand suggests a way of forging the mithril with other metals to enhance its strength. But as Celebrimbor explains what he must do to save the Elves from their diminishing light his choice of words makes Galadriel suspicious of Halbrand's keen interest in the work at the great forge. She checks into the royal lineages of the Southlands. As work progresses in the forge, Galadriel confronts Halbrand with her discovery that he is not from the lineage of the Southland kings, which was broken many years ago. Halbrand reveals himself to be Sauron, and infiltrates her mind to persuade her to become his queen and rule Middle-Earth with him as king, but she refuses. Sauron overpowers Galadriel and flees from Eregion. Keeping what she knows from Elrond and Celebrimbor, she instructs Celebrimbor to forge Three Rings instead of two, so that it brings balance to the holders. Elendil and Míriel arrive back to Númenór to find king Tar-Palantir has died. While back amongst the Harfoots, the Stranger and Nori decide to depart the group and travel east, into Rhûn, to find the “Hermit's Hat” constellation. Unsure which way to go, the Stranger chooses a direction based upon the sweet smell in the air, advising that when in doubt, to "always follow your nose". As their adventure into the East begins, so the journey of Sauron from Eregion finishes as he reaches the Land of Mordor. In this episode, the guys talk about Radagast and his Staff. The conversation ranges from playing the Istari without his staff to playing him in a not-so-creature-heavy deck. Interesting stuff for sure! Check out the written card review on http://CardTalk2018.com Interested in supporting Card Talk? http://patreon.com/CardTalk2018

Wayne Randall's first voyage aboard Supertrain as Harry Flood's second is more than the training run he expected. Flood comes down with mumps (at age 62?) and ends up in isolation. A charity swimsuit fashion show is scheduled in the pool car, meaning Wayne's first meeting with Events Director Penny Whitaker is a hasty hallway hello. Meanwhile, an unseen hand plots to steal an emerald necklace from special guest Zsa Zsa Gabor. Is it special guest Peter Lawford, special guest Lyle Waggoner, or a rando in an obviously fake mustache? And will Wayne, Penny, and Guest Relations Director George Boone (formerly Black Porter) rouse special guest star Abe Vigoda from his dozing in time to catch the thief? Erik and Justin react to the full retooling of Supertrain. The new central cast gets high marks even if it comes at the expense of the weekly mystery. Erik has a very hard time saying "Lyle Waggoner." Justin recalls a Zsa Zsa Gabor joke long past its freshness dating. The pair remember Weird Baby Man despite him leaving the show a few episodes earlier. Justin loses his mind over Flood's liquified sickbed diet. Peter Lawford's slurred line-readings delight Erik. Zsa Zsa becomes a member of the Istari and Tommy Wiseau makes his way into the discussion.

The Lure of Middle Earth! It's not just the draw that all Tolkien fans feel toward the realm he created. It's an event that draws in over 100 Lord of the Rings LCG players and enthusiasts every year. It's been going on now for almost 19 years, and there is still room for you to go! Other than the Lure of Middle Earth, we talk to Dominik Schonleben (one of it's organizers) about Saruman the neutral Istari ally. How do you use him? Can you use him? What makes the most sense? Is he any good? Wait, what - Doomed 3?! For information about the Lure of Middle Earth, visit https://lureofmiddleearth.com/
In part 2 of the Istari episode, we talked briefly about stone carving and the Lizzadro Museum. Erica got really excited about it, so we decided to go and record a little bit afterwards, and this is the result. While it's only tangentially related to Tolkien, it's kind of in our nature to just go where the conversation takes us. This time we did that pretty literally, and we wanted to include you in this tangent just like we include you in our tangents during our discussions about Tolkien. We start off by recapping our visit briefly, then we talk about azurite and the Blue Istari statue from Shadow of Mordor, and we finish by discussing visiting the museum. We'll be talking less about rocks and more about Tolkien again next time. See you then! References: All music is by the amazing Doctor Turtle. Website for the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art A video about Jade Carving using modern techniques. Keep in mind the The Blue Azurite Figurine of the Two Istari would have been carved with hand tools, and the stuff in the Lizzadro museum would have been carved with hand tools or as show in in this video from the Lizzadro's website.
We talked about it at about 18:30-23.30 in part 2 of the Istari episode, and now we're going to the LIzzadro Museum of Lapidary Arts! We're going to try something new out and give you a little podcast slice of life by recording our reactions afterward. Not sure when we'll post it, but you'll see it come out as usual. Stay tuned!
In this, final installment of our discussion on the istari, we get to Gandalf and Saruman. We discuss Saruman’s jealousy of Gandalf, what REALLY happened with Gandalf and the balrog, and the lost istari… Tim and Dirk. 1:24 Istari were brought in to work against Sauron 1:35 Dan didn’t know they were immortal 2:20 In D&D, a wizard isn’t an immortal being, it’s just a person that knows spells 3:15 Gandalf in the shire 3:40 Gandalf using a D&D spell of charm/domination against Bilbo 4:30 Gandalf doing things a normal person shouldn’t be able to. 5:12 Gandalf fighting the balrog, he disappears and reappears and then he doesn’t want to talk about it #wizardstuff 5:30 Gandalf’s description of balrog fight 6:20 Gandalf’s disappearance not understood as a death. Get back in there! You’re the only one paying attention! 7:20 Gandalf’s obviously a wizard because he’s fighting other wizards like Sauron and Saruman. 8:00 Can he fight the balrog because of the ring? He’s pretty powerful, he could take him! 8:21 What even is a staff? ¯_(ツ)_/¯ 8:30 Sauron is a wizard? Bring a wizard to fight him. Can’t sneak up on the eye. 9:00 If you come at a wizard directly, you get a fireball to the face! Or a Nazgûl to the face. Summon: Nazgûl, spiders, orcs, troll 9:33 Dominate: others spell is extremely powerful 9:47 Did Saruman think he could win a battle of will against Sauron? 10:04 How did the people of middle earth see the wizards? Guys that know stuff. 10:30 Círdan knew who they were when they arrived. Quoth Círdan... “Ohai Guys!” 11:00 Some people know, mostly… nope 11:40 Gandalf listening to the wind 12:10 Caradhras = least bad path 12:20 Is Wormtongue an apprentice? Nah. Dan made that up. 13:00 Advisor to Théoden because people trust Saruman. He planted Wormtongue, but Wormtongue doesn’t have powers. 14:10 Saruman and Wormtongue in the shire/edoras 15:20 Guys with magic? Nope! Other thing! 15:58 Dan knew Gandalf was a Maia but didn’t apply it contextually 16:15 When he figured it all out, it explained to him that Gandalf died when he fought the balrog. 16:34 Otherwise, thought he was just makin’ stuff up! Gandalf beat the mini boss, leveled up, got new gear, and now he can fight Saruman. 17:30 Gandalf is the jerk that sends the party away and claims all the loot and experience points. Frank the balrog! 18:00 What’s the story Frank? 18:13 Hot dogs for balrogs 18:28 We don’t want to know what balrogs want. 18:45 Sauron is not an Istari?!?! Aren’t they just maia sent by a vala? Nope! 19:10 Istari means a thing 19:19 Bringer of hot dogs to balrogs? 19:33 It means wizard. 20:04 Istari is an order of Maia. There are some that didn’t leave valinor. 20:33 It’s not just these 5. Erica starts humming for no reason while Dan loses his mind for a while. 20:49 Number unknown but 5 chiefs came to the northeast of middle earth. UT p 389 there may be more. 21:26 Saruman is the chief of the order according to Gandalf. The order=all Istari! 21:40 When Gandalf breaks the staff, Saruman mentions the staffs of the 5 wizards. Do only 5 have staffs? 22:07 What do staffs do?!?! Breaking them? Collecting them? *if you know anything about this let us know so Erica can research it! 22:24 Norse mythology. Erica will read it someday… 22:34 Gandalf has a different reputation everywhere he goes. 23:26 In the shire he’s a benign troublemaker 23:48 Guess what? Erica loves Sam. 24:00 Gandalf thought of differently in different places, like Rivendell 24:21 Elrond’s attitude toward Gandalf 24:38 Elrond seems unhappy to see him. Is that Elrond or just Hugo Weaving’s acting? 25:03 Gandalf’s activities mean change. Sauron falling, the destruction of the ring may cause the other rings to lose power. The elves power diminishing. 26:58 Maybe Gandalf is more powerful than Saruman.
In this second part of our Istari episode, we get WAY off topic… or are we just doing some holistic detective work to get where we needed to be? We discuss a little bit about the less known wizards, Radagast, Alatar, and Pallando. Dan defends a choice made by Peter Jackson in the Hobbit movies (what!?), he talks about how the Istari figure into the game Shadow of Mordor, and we both get distracted, Radagast style, by Dirk Gently. 1:10 what were each of them doing? 1:34 What were they sent for? 1:50 Erica’s not particular about language 2:10 Sent to combat Sauron 2:40 Radagast saw bunnies and trees and gave up. 3:00 Hobbit movies, Peter McRadagast is he an abomination or an eccentric failure? 3:23 Was sent to fight great evil, but lost interest because bunnies are so darn cute! 4:00 Look at the BONES! 4:48 Peter McRadagast - Dan’s reaction 5:18 There’s no question… THAT guy is definitely Radagast! 5:40 The rabbit sled *eyeroll* 6:30 In defense of Peter McRadagast 7:30 Broad appeal/comedic effect 8:35 One of the least powerful of the Istari, or more powerful because of influence with animals? 9:15 Ged from Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea novels is a good example of wizards utilizing nature powers. 9:40 Radagast failed at protecting nature too. 9:56 Yavanna’s controls didn’t work so well in Isengard. Radagast turned a blind eye while Saruman ripped things up and the ents ignored him for a good, long time. But when they noticed, it was pretty effective. 10:40 The blue istari were Oromë’s not a lot of info about them. 11:15 Possibly responsible for magic cults after Sauron’s fall. 11:44 Shadow of Mordor has blue istari artifacts (Dan keeps saying Shadow of War, but it’s not). 12:18 The star chart and the two istari statue 12:55 The Sea of Núrnen is in the southern part of Mordor. 13:40 - DAN GET LINKS TO THE ARTIFACTS SO PEOPLE CAN SEE THEM! OK! I did it! The Weathered Azurite Figureine, The Two Istari ~and~ Star Chart 14:15 Dan reads the script for the audio from the star chart in Shadow of Mordor. 15:38 Why did Erica find this so interesting? 16:00 Istari/Vala associations, who was Pallando hanging out with in Valinor? 16:10 Nienna and Mandos. Destiny in Sandman! 17:20 The blue istari give up. 17:44 How would they have even made these things? 18:30 The blue carving of the istari. 18:56 There are 2 blue istari that went south, 2 guys with staffs, carved from blue stone. 19:38 Alatar is always associated with Oromë 21:00 The power of Sauron’s dominating will causes despair. 21:41 Game designers decided that the blue istari were doing what they were supposed to, but were destroyed by Sauron. 22:14 Tolkien implies that the blue istari started magic cults, were possibly turned by Sauron. 22:55 The 2 istari figurine 23:25 What was it for? Lizzadro Lapidary Arts Museum 24:24 Description of figurine from game. 25:21 Text from game describing how the blue istari are hunting the darkness. Insisted on being together. 26:17 So you want to read Tolkien - was it 2 maia that came to Middle Earth in the form of 2 people. 27:27 Good job Shadow of Mordor designers! 27:55 The blue istari as Dirk Gently. Sauron was defeated. How do you know they weren’t the reason? If they are holistic detectives, they could have been the ones that did it! 28:37 Erica’s shrugging but you can’t see it. 29:53 Erica’s librarianing! 30:33 Which vala is in Dirk Gently’s refrigerator? It’s judgy, keeper of halls of the dead, mysterious, forgets nothing, and knows all. MANDOS! 31:07 Did the contents of the fridge make the blue istari give up their quest? References: Links to the Shadow of Mordor wiki: The Weathered Azurite Figureine, The Two Istari ~and~ Star Chart All music is by the amazing Doctor Turtle! Feel free to show him some love. In this episode, we talk about the Istari, perhaps better known as the wizards! That's right, we're talking about Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, and yes, a couple more. Who are they? Why are they in Middle-Earth? What about Sauron, does he count? In other news, Dan defends Peter Jackson. Kind of. He can't believe it either. In other other news, there are going to be 3 episodes on the Istari because we talked so much about it. Enjoy! 1:26 What’s an Istari? Who are they? How were they chosen? 1:37 They appeared in Middle the third age when Sauron arrived in Mirkwood 1:58 The Valar decided to get off their butts and do something. 2:15 Manwë called everyone together to decide who to send. 2:23 Aulë knows a guy Curunír (Curumo/Saruman) 3:00 Yavanna sends a chaperone… Radagast! 3:50 Aulë is out of control! 4:18 Entwives are the chaperones of the chaperones? 4:41 Yavanna doesn’t trust Aulë’s servants… Can you blame her? 4:55 Saruman got caught up in creating stuff and Radagast got so distracted by nature that he just gave up. 5:15 Curunír is “the one of cunning devices” in Sindarin, Curumo is his Quenya name and Saruman is “man of skill” in the languages of men. Radagast/Aiwendil is Lover of birds… he sure is. 7:51 Saruman resents his boss’ wife sending a lame babysitter. 8:42 The three other Istari, starting with Alatar and Pallando 9:11 Pallando’s finger guns - Erica was actually doing finger guns right then. You can’t see it but it’s awesome! 9:25 Making up definitions for Alatar and Pallando’s names. In Elvish, Palan means afar, like the palantir, that which sees afar. -Do is a masculine suffix, so Pallando is Afarman. Tar is a modifier meaning lord and ala is a verb that means to grow or to plant. So Alatar is Growlord? 10:05 Alatar and Pallando are the blue istari 10:37 Saruman is the head of the order, Alatar is next most powerful and they both brought someone. 11:28 Manwë was looking for Olórin because he’s the wisest. 11:37 Lórien vs Lothlórien 12:08 Willow reference! 12:23 Shut up Dan! 12:26 Lórien/Irmo Dreams and visions 12:48 Olórin = true/clear vision/dream 13:04 Spoiler alert! Olórin is Gandalf 13:19 Gandalf fears Sauron and doesn’t think he can help. He’s afraid of him. 13:50 3 istari or 5? 14:05 Hey Varda, is Gandalf 5th, 3rd, or 1st? 14:20 Judging Saruman and putting words in his mouth. 14:55 Varda/Elbereth is the queen of stars 15:43 What are Istari? - maia, spirits that can take form 16:15 Could a balrog look Elvish? Corruption, evil things lose their ability to hide their true form. The way Morgoth and Sauron did. 16:33 Balrogs are spirits of fire and death, what do you want from them? Nothing. We want nothing more from balrogs. They are cool. 17:00 Maia hanging out. Erica says they weren’t Istari before they were chosen. That’s not really true and we will come back to it in a later part of this episode. Istari is a type of maia. 17:36 Why are Istari? 17:50 Vala council 17:59 Manwë decides to send emissaries because Sauron is out of control. 18:37 Avatars vs. emissaries. Not, like, in an epic fight or anything, just the distinction. 19:03 Bang! Out of the canon! Talkin’ bout Unfinished Tales! 19:20 What’s an avatar? Not an Istari, I can tell ya that! 19:40 More about emissaries. 20:00 Erica did her research this time! But she still hasn’t read Norse mythology. More on that later… 20:10 We

In this season of advent, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Messiah, it's important to look at what is meant by 'Messiah.' The Judeo-Christian tradition teaches that the Messiah is a priest, a prophet, and a king, but did you know that the Lord of the Rings mythology teaches us about these roles? In the second half of "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age,” Isildur refuses to destroy the One Ring when he has the chance, keeping it as his prize from the vanquished Sauron. But he is stripped of the Ring, and his life, when he's ambushed by Orcs on his way home. It’s only a question of time before the Ring is found centuries later by one of the fisher-folk living near the river, and eventually comes to the hand of some creature called a Hobbit from some place called the Shire. Think you've heard this one before? Not so fast! We go back to Tolkien's Unfinished Tales to learn more about Isildur's death at the Gladden Fields and the origin of the Istari or Wizards. We also dig up some blasphemous rumours about the origins of Orcs to answer a listener question.

"Emissaries they were from the Lords of the West, the Valar, who still took counsel for the governance of Middle-earth, and when the shadow of Sauron began first to stir again took this means of resisting him. For with the consent of Eru they sent members of their own high order, but clad in the bodies of Men, real and not feigned, but subject to the fears and pains and weariness of earth, able to hunger and thirst and be slain; though because of their noble spirits they did not die, and aged only by the cares of labours of many long years." It's that time again, your monthly extended episode of the Green Dragon! This time around we have our usual Month in Middle-earth, discussing our exploits at Ark 2016; A Shadow of the Past looking at Shadow and Flame, one of the earliest sourcebooks; a Lore segment about the Istari, or wizards, sent to Middle-earth by the Valar to combat Sauron; and finish up with an extra un-hasty Entmoot! (We have also added a "Player Shoutout" section before the Entmoot, depending on the response this may continue each week so if you are looking for fellow gamers in your area, let us know!) So join Jeremy, Kylie, David and Matt for an episode filled with shadows, flames, laughs and Radagast! (Me?) Intro (00:00) Month in Middle Earth (01:50) A Shadow of the Past (47:15) Lore: Istari (1:27:40) Entmoot/Player Shoutout (1:54:20)
"I think that I now understand what he is up to. He is plotting to become a Power. He has a mind of metal and wheels; and he does not care for growing things, except as far as they serve him for the moment. And now it is clear that he is a black traitor. He has taken up with foul folk, with the Orcs." Welcome again to another episode of the Green Dragon! This week we have everyone's favourite wizard (well... at least top 3), leader of the Istari and head of the White Council, Saruman! So join Matt, David and Kylie as they find out what makes the White Wizard such a dominant force in the game, and laugh along as we realise none of us know how to pronounce English, Elvish or any other language!
