The age-old saying, “It Takes A Village,” is what New Life Village lives by, and they should know. Founded and headed up by husband and wife duo Isamarie (Isa) Banks Nieves and James Banks, New Life Village exists to bridge the very wide gap between the foster care of our youth who are about to age out of the foster care system at the age of 18 or who have aged out of the system and have nowhere to go or to turn to. “At New Life, our village is our community of stakeholders that believes that every child deserves an opportunity to succeed in life no matter where they come from. It just so happens that these kids come from a place of not knowing what is going to happen to them once they age out of the system,” Banks Nieves says. She continues, “Once they turn 18, life just falls in front of them and is coming at them at a million miles an hour, and they have nowhere to go or anyone to turn to. But that's why we exist and are building on what we are standing for.” It's not just talk. James and Isa are in the process of building out a 4,000 sq. ft. facility in Killeen, Texas. The building will serve as both a fundraising opportunity for New Life Village, complete with a bakery/coffee shop, media arts section, and a big working kitchen. “Our vision for this place is to be a blessing not only for our kids but for the community too,” James says as he points out different sections of the building. “We want to teach our kids responsibility. We want them to work here, make money, and gain the confidence and understanding they need as they move into the workforce beyond here,” Isa adds, looking in on the various stages of construction in the building. Isa continues and begins to become emotional, “The building we are walking through, everything you see here, everything that will be in this place, will be donated. We have an amazing board of directors who believe in us and what we are doing. We share the same vision and want the same thing for our kids: structure and someone, something to believe in.”As they continue to walk through the building, both James and Isa elaborate. “Once our youth, whether it's a boy, a young man, or a girl, a young woman, turn 18, the foster care system kicks them out. They have nowhere to go,” James says. “Let me be clear, ‘Kicks them out' is a very harsh term, but I think at this point, where I am and with what I've seen with the youth we are working with and have worked with, harsh doesn't even come close to what these kids, our kids, have been through,” Isa says in a matter-of-fact tone, without any of the emotional context you can feel as she says this. She continues, “Can you imagine growing up in a system that is overcrowded and understaffed? No one has time for you, much less gives you the attention every child needs to develop into self-reliant, confident adults who become productive members of society.” “What happens when foster children and our youth don't get ANY of that? There's a developmental gap that begins to widen, and by the time they, the kids, reach the adult age of 18, they are expected to walk out of a system that didn't prepare them for what they are about to walk into out in the real world,” says Isa.“We see it time and time again. It doesn't get any easier the longer we work with our youth. It's heartbreaking when we first meet them. Standoffish, not really knowing who to trust, and the emotional disconnect that will always come with what they have been through,” James says. But there is hope in what Isa and James are doing by standing in the gap between foster care ending and what is next.According to their website, New Life Village | Foster Care --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingsomethingpodcast/support

"It Takes A Village." This is a common saying, especially among parents, and it speaks to the idea that there is a need for the community to care and stay engaged in the process of raising and guiding our young. But this idea of being part of a village speaks more to the way we are made than to the demands or labor of raising a young person.  We are social creatures, created for community. Pastor JD shares in this first installment of our series that the right community can provide something you can't get in any other way. She's super passionate about pre and post-natal fitness and lives the FIT4MOM mission statement every day, “helping moms make strides in fitness, motherhood, and life.” This mompreneur is on a mission to help mamas in our community find strength in motherhood and live life empowered. Please welcome our neighbor Samantha Welch!Samantha Welch in her own words: “Hey I'm Samantha, wife to Michael and Mama to two fierce little girls, Parker and River. I've worn many hats throughout my life but Motherhood is by far the hardest but in the best way. These days you can catch me trying to look composed as I run a small fitness franchise, raise my kiddos, and find time for self-care. Prior to becoming a business owner and Mom I was working full-time in the film industry, decorating sets for television. Honestly, It was a career that I worked my butt off to get into, it was a 6 figure job with amazing benefits and I was good at it! When Parker, my oldest daughter, came into the world, the passions in my heart shifted from becoming an Emmy-winning decorator to being a Mom! My heart was now outside of my body and I needed to make a shift.During my maternity leave, I found an amazing fitness program that was tailored to moms who could work out with their kiddos in tow, It was called FIT4MOM. I was so scared to go to the first class that I had Michael come sit on the bench at the park just in case Parker was crying or something (postpartum anxiety is real y'all). I signed up for a membership and started going to classes as often as I could, it became a routine for Parker and me to head to the park. She would often nap in the stroller while I was able to workout, but it was more than that; I was able to have conversations with other women who were going through similar situations and phases of life that I was, and I was able to have a new form of self-care and a bonding experience for me and my daughter. I had instant community and a village that was with me through everything, including the diagnosis of a rare disease in my youngest daughter, River. I never felt alone, FIT4MOM was there to lift me up and hold me close (even during the pandemic mind you) When I was offered the opportunity to take over the franchise I almost didn't hesitate, I didn't know the first thing about running a business but I knew a lot about leadership, mom life, and fitness. So I jumped in, and it's been a hell of a ride, but for sure one worth waiting in line for!”Fit4Mom  is the country's largest fitness program for moms offering pre and post-natal fitness classes for every stage of motherhood. In 1996, then first lady Hillary Clinton popularized the saying, “It Takes A Village” when she published a book with that title. The original saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” is variously attributed to African and Indigenous American societies. Wherever it came from, its meaning is widely accepted. And that is, the knowledge and skills a child needs to become a well-rounded, successful, functioning adult are learned not just from a child's parents, but from people in their community. Peter Ricchiuti's guests on Out to Lunch today are two of those village people. Larry Washington is working to retire the common complaint that kids graduate high school woefully unprepared for the real world. You might have been one of those kids. A lot of us discovered when we left school that we knew nothing about credit cards, checking accounts, or budgeting. We had no real understanding of what being a member of the workforce is all about. And no one in school even broached the subject of entrepreneurship or what it means to start your own business. If Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans has a connection to your kids' school, they're going to graduate knowing all of that. Junior Achievement of New Orleans reaches between 20 and 40 thousand students a year. And Larry Washington is its President. After we graduate from school and move into various stages of adulthood, marriage, and parenting, we find out we have even more to learn. Ty Salvant is an author, speaker, and founder of an organization called Time With Ty that focuses on providing education, support, and assistance in those areas of our lives where we're expected to figure it out on our own. Sometimes, that strategy just doesn't work out so great, and you need help. Time With Ty includes Time For Rest – self-care support for women; Time For Us – a marriage enrichment program; and Time To Play, which connects adults to local community organizations. Ty is also the author of a series of children's books called The Alphabet of You. “Easier said than done.” We're all familiar with that saying. And most of us are also familiar with how frustratingly true it is, in all kinds of avenues of life. It's a lot easier to say, “Kids need a more rounded education,” or “We should be able to ask for help when we need it,” than it is to actually give kids a more rounded education, or ask for help when we need it. We're all indebted to people like Larry and Ty who dedicate themselves to stepping up and doing something about solving the problems most of just talk about. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. His career continued upward until his last position in the Financial Sector as a Private Client Advisor with JPMorgan. His children gave him the strength to get up and smile each day. Amidst all these losses, Adam started assessing his life and where he belonged. The article I wrote that I'm going to read you in this episode coincides with the idea that we all need one another; not only at this time of year, but all the year round. This point is driven home (another pun intended which you'll understand once you listen) in a TV show I was watching some years ago, using an analogy with the help of a term that bikers use. As a Chaplain, entrepreneur, speaker, advocate, mentor and strategic connector; Vida Kalhor has over 20 years of leadership experience in healthcare and business operations and is the owner of Radiance Consulting, where she provides business and professional leadership coaching and accountability for her clients.  She is also the current Center Director at Amen Clinics in Hollywood; a mental health outpatient center helping patients to improve their brain health. She has dedicated her time to improve her community by holding various board seats such as the Broward County School Diversity Committee, where she serves by working to improve equity for all students across Broward County Schools. She is also the secretary on the Governing Board of Imagine Charter School, where she works with other board members for student success, she is a board member for the Broward County Health Facility Authority, and she is a member of the Mental Wellness Networking Alliance (MWNA) working to stop the stigma that is associated with mental health in our community. The decision to get involved in her community came as a promise to herself when she was 10 years old. Vida came to the United States when she was 10 years old as a 5th grader. She did not speak the language and had to be placed in the ESOL programs at school. She strived very hard to learn the language and become more independent. During this time, she faced many challenges. Challenges that made her make a promise to herself, that one day she would help others not have to go through what she went through, and she has stood on that promise ever since.  Vida is an advocate for students, seniors and people struggling with mental health challenges. In this episode we discuss: The struggles she faced and overcame as a first-time mother. Grieving and mourning the women we were before we had children. The challenges she faced and overcame when she came to the US from Iran. Healing from trauma to be the best you can be for your children.  Informed Consent in Healthcare.  Asking for help and communicating needs to your partner and family.  Resources mentioned in this episode: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho Connect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the.motherhood.village1/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicolegcumberbatch/  Website: https://www.themotherhoodvillage.com/ Loved this episode? Does it still take a village to raise a child in today's world? Beth Ann Sands, Texas mom and DJ, joins the Hey, Sisterhood for an episode filled with mic drop moments about positively influencing and relating to teenagers in our communities. This is the fifth and final episode in the 5-part series on motherhood, airing May 2022.    Call to Action: Support a teenager by hyping them up and listening to them.   “Go hype up a teenager! Whether that be commenting on somebody's social media that you follow from your church congregation, your community— hype them up there, give them a compliment! When you see them, make them feel seen. If you have teenagers and you don't regularly do family dinner, make a goal to just do one family dinner. Make a goal to just be available to them.   And the biggest call to action is to just listen to your teenagers because there will be other people that will listen to them, but you want it to be you. You want to be that safe space.”  - Beth Ann Sands, Texas Mom and Community DJ     Referenced Links and Episodes:  Beth Ann Instagram  Beth Ann TikTok  Learn more about the BeReal app Ep 28 Scrunchy Mamas  Ep 29 Birth Mothers and Adoption // Steve Sunday  Ep 30 Meme Girls // Rachel Homolak  Ep 31 Mom of All Trades // Tyla Bearss Connect with Hey, Sister: Visit HeySisterPodcast.org Hey, Sister!
