On this Vroom Vroom episode, Elizabeth Blackstock, host of Deadly Passions, Terrible Joys, joins Addy, Britt, and Jesse for an episode that would be titled "Dale Earnhardt Daddy Issues" if we wanted to be a little more obtuse. Other possibilities that would have been fun out of context include "The Things That He Says, His Entire Behavior, And His Face," "I'm Not A Semipro Sim Racer, I'm Just A Girl," and "No, Our Car Is Red." But this being Addy's entrance to NASCAR fandom, it felt like a time to go a little more straightforward with an episode title. Do people really read the show notes? If you do, get in touch. After crossing paths in 1992, singer Tania Doko and musician James Roche realised they shared a creative spark that would quickly evolve into pop/rock duo Bachelor Girl. The pair tell us about the road to getting signed with Ross Fraser and John Farnham's label, Gotham Records, and how their top 5 debut single, "Buses And Trains" was part of that journey. Tania and James reflect on the success of that song and how it led to being signed by US industry heavyweight Clive Davis and a revised version of debut album Waiting For The Day. While overseas success wasn't to be, Bachelor Girl followed their first local hit with others like "Permission To Shine", "I'm Just A Girl" and "Treat Me Good". We hear about the inspiration behind their songs, the pressures involved in their second album, Dysfunctional, and how record company politics led to their joint career being put on hold. Tania also reveals details of her solo record deal, which was also cut short in the mid-2ooos, and her stint as a mentor on Popstars Live. Then, the story of how they reunited for singles "Speak" and "Calling Out Your Name" in recent years is also told.Bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/aussieTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @TurnAroundOnJoyInstagram: @chartbeatsau, @joyturnbeataroundEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Death Valley Girls - What Are the Odds from the 2023 album Islands in the Sky on Suicide Squeeze. Los Angeles-based garage rockers Death Valley Girls are releasing their fifth record Islands in the Sky on February 24th via Suicide Squeeze. The follow-up to 2020's Under the Spell Of Joy was recorded in a cabin in the California woods in early 2022 following a “mysterious illness” that left frontwoman Bonnie Bloomgarden bedridden from November 2020 to March 2021 which inspired much of the record. “When I was sick I had to sleep most of the day,” Bloomgarden details in a press release. “I kept waking up every few hours with an intense message to take care of the island, feed the island…I have no idea why, but making music for the island kept coming up.” Our Song of the Day is the lead single off the record “What Are the Odds,” a rollicking riff-ripping scorcher that takes its inspiration from an unlikely source: Madonna. “In ‘I'm A Man Too' we were trying to revisit No Doubt's ‘I'm Just A Girl' but through a new lens,” explains Bloomgarden. “‘What Are The Odds' is in the same way an investigation/revisitation of Madonna's ‘Material Girl' but with a DVG spin.” She continues on to say, “We love to think about consciousness and existence, and we very much believe in some type of reincarnation, but also that this experience isn't linear, there isn't a past and future, there's something else going on! What is it? Is it a simulation, are we simulated girls??” The video for the song sees two versions of the band, one where they're black hoodie-clad amongst a dreary LA landscape and the other a technicolor dreamscape of them lounging at a pool with red beehives. Which one is the simulation is anyone's guess, but I'd personally rather live in the latter. Life update: My brother just got married!!! I ugly cried my way through his wedding weekend and it was truly one of the most special weekends of my life. SO, I thought this week we'd stick with the wedding theme, and listen back to one of my all-time favorite episodes with none other than icon, legend, and crop-top queen GWEN STEFANI. We recorded this episode last summer, a week after Gwen married Blake Shelton - and we were the first people she talked to after the wedding. I've known Gwen my entire life, and seeing her so happy and getting to capture her elation after such a huge occasion was incredible. This episode is responsible for putting TMAI on the map and we've come far since then! Not to be emo but…If you've been listening to this show since the Gwen episode, thank you! I'll never be able to express my gratitude or love, you're my favorite. PS We'll be back with a brand new episode next week! DID I SHAVE MY LEGS FOR THIS (1996)Album Information: Did I Shave My Legs for This is the debut studio album of American country artist Deana Carter, released via Patriot Records in the UK in 1995. In 1996, Capitol Records had Carter record new material for the North American release of the album, which included three songs from the original release.[8] This version features her breakthrough debut single "Strawberry Wine", a number-one hit on the Billboard [[Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at the end of that year. "We Danced Anyway", "Count Me In", and the title track were also released as a singles. Of these, "We Danced Anyway" and the promotional single "How Do I Get There" also reached number one. (Wikipedia)Album InfoEverything's Gonna Be Alright (1998)Everything's Gonna Be Alright is the second studio album by American country music artist Deana Carter. Released in 1998 as her second and final studio album for Capitol Records Nashville, it features the single "Absence of the Heart", a number 16 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts in late 1998. "You Still Shake Me" and "Angels Working Overtime" were released as the second and third singles, and peaked at numbers 36 and 35, respectively. "Ruby Brown" failed to chart in the U.S., but managed to reach number 74 on the country charts in Canada.Album InfoFather Christmas (2001)This holiday album manages to be great despite itself -- one of Deana Carter's strengths is her songwriting; this is a collection largely of standards. Even though it adds a kind of fireside charm, the guitar accompaniment, provided by her father, Fred Carter, Jr., seems ham-handed and often off-tempo. The only thing about the album that isn't flawed is her voice. Subtle and sweet, she charms throughout and sets a gentle, soothing tone that is perfect for a wintry evening. Carter has also managed to present a holiday album that manages to exude a down-home country style without resorting to stereotypical twanginess and fiddles. I'm so excited to have two guests on today's episode that I happen to know quite well! Donnie and Abby Lawson are the husband-and-wife team behind JustaGirlandherBlog.com, and they are also my brother and sister-in-law! Just A Girl and Her Blog primarily focuses on organization, productivity, and home decor, but Donnie and Abby also share their blogging strategies to help newer bloggers learn how to grow. So not only is the course on sale from Tuesday, July 30, through Monday, August 5 for $79 (it's normally $99!), but they're also doing it LIVE on August 5-7. To get your hands on this course, you need to go to brilliantbusinessmoms.com/B2B. You want to go directly to that page because that's where the sale is happening. For a band like No Doubt to break through in the early '90s, playing unapologetic, sunny ska at a time where everyone just wanted to wear flannel and be angsty, was difficult. But by the time "Tragic Kingdom" came around, grunge was on its way out, and the masses were ready for something new. We'll go into the history of No Doubt, Gwen's entire solo career up to today, and where inspiration came from on songs like "Just A Girl," "Spiderwebs," and "Don't Speak."
In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie start out looking critically looking at “Just A Girl” by No Doubt. Is it an SJW anthem or an individual appeal to autonomy? Find out!
