“I wanna talk about DOWNTIME…” Many moons ago during the B.R. era (Before Russ), back in the early days of this podcast with Adam, we took on The 1st Four of The Big 4, taking a look at each of the debut albums from Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer, respectively. To take that episode a step further (and to add a slight twist to the original premise), we thought it might be fun (and a bit of a challenge) to attempt to identify which tracks would be considered the DEEP CUTS from The First Four albums of EACH of The Big Four thrash bands. Be sure to check out our Patreon for a brand-new way to “splat” with some “liquid sneeze” and remember that when it comes to Conway Twitty, “the power was in his hair”. Don't forget to pick up your “Queenthrax” tickets, find out why “English is stupid”, and get ready to JOIN US (whenever you get a little “DOWNTIME”) as we begin our descent and dig down deeply into THE BACKSIDE OF THE FIRST FOUR OF THE BIG FOUR. This week we're discussing every album by Metallica from 1983 to 1988. That's right, all the thrash albums. This era highlights not only some of their most ferocious and technical material (and let's face it, BEST albums), but also their time with legendary bassist Cliff Burton before his tragic death. Everyone and their mom has heard these albums, but now it's time to hear them again.Closing track: "Dyers Eve" from ...And Justice for All (1988)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTubeSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Master of Puppets (1986) -- Best Album, Personal FavoriteKill 'Em All (1983) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Master of Puppets (1986) -- Best Album...And Justice for All (1988) -- Personal FavoriteKill 'Em All (1983) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode...Kill 'Em All (1983)Ride the Lightning (1984)Master of Puppets (1986)...And Justice for All (1988)
It's a long journey from Kill 'Em All to 72 Seasons, but we made the trip and there's a lot to talk about. We cover our favorite tracks on every studio album, with the band's best riffs and solos along the way. There's plenty we can all agree on—Master of Puppets sits high on the hard-rock altar—and just us much that's up to debate—is it time for a critical reevaluation of the Load/Reload double-header? And 13 years on, we're still talking about Lulu. This episode brought to you by EMG: http://emgpickups.comUse code EMG100 for 15% off at checkout!Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. In 1982, the metal scene was rapidly evolving, marked by the raw energy of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and the nascent thrash movement that would soon explode onto the scene. Within this context, the band Accept from Solingen, West Germany, released their groundbreaking fourth studio album, “Restless and Wild.” This album solidified their place in metal history and bridged the gap between traditional heavy metal and the faster, more aggressive sounds that would come to define the genre in the years to come.Thank you for reading Dig Me Out. This post is public so feel free to share it.At this point, Accept was no newcomer. Formed in the late 1960s as Band X and later renamed after Chicken Shack's album “Accept,” the band had undergone numerous lineup changes. By the time of “Restless and Wild,” the lineup featured Udo Dirkschneider on vocals, Wolf Hoffmann on guitar, Peter Baltes on bass, and Stefan Kaufmann on drums. This band had been refining its sound, and “Restless and Wild” represented a pivotal moment in their career. The early 80s were a fertile time for heavy metal, with bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest defining the genre's sound and image. Accept, however, brought something uniquely German to the table, blending the melodic sensibilities of NWOBHM with a harder, faster edge that foreshadowed the coming thrash metal wave.“Restless and Wild” opens with “Fast as a Shark”, a track that kicks off with an unexpected twist—a snippet of the traditional German folk song “Ein Heller und ein Batzen”. This playful intro is quickly obliterated by one of the earliest examples of speed metal, a genre-defining moment that influenced countless bands. With its relentless double-kick drumming and rapid-fire riffing, “Fast as a Shark” is often cited as a precursor to thrash metal, pre-dating Metallica's “Kill 'Em All” by several months. The title track, “Restless and Wild,” follows suit with its high-energy delivery and Hoffmann's searing guitar work, a highlight throughout the album. His solos are a masterclass in early 80s metal guitar, blending technical prowess with a keen sense of melody. Tracks like “Neon Nights” and “Princess of the Dawn” showcase the band's versatility, with “Neon Nights” weaving between acoustic passages and heavy riffs, and “Princess of the Dawn” featuring a haunting, epic structure that closes the album on a high note.“Restless and Wild” didn't just solidify Accept's place in the metal pantheon; it also played a crucial role in the genre's development. The album's influence can be heard in the speed and thrash metal movements that followed. Bands like Metallica and Slayer, who released their debuts in 1983, were undoubtedly impacted by Accept's fusion of speed and melody. While “Balls to the Wall” would become their most commercially successful album, “Restless and Wild” remains a favorite among metal purists for its raw energy and pioneering spirit. It's an album that captures a band on the brink of stardom, experimenting with their sound and pushing the boundaries of what metal could be.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Demon's Night * 7:53 - Fast as a Shark * 14:51 - Fast as a Shark * 16:19 - Neon Nights * 17:29 - Don't Go Stealing My Soul Away * 20:48 - Restless and Wild * 25:27 - Shake Your Heads * 28:42 - Get Ready * 31:44 - Princess of the Dawn Outro - Flash Rockin' ManMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. In the summer of 1984, Metallica were not yet the Metal Gods and household names they are now. They were a band with one record under their belt (Kill Em All, hear UAWIL #138 for our review with The Hook Rocks Jay Scott), some experience playing bigger stages as an opening act and a small but loyal following. However, their US record company didn't have the money to pay for a new album so James, Kirk, Cliff and Lars traveled to Copenhagen and crashed in the studio as producer Fleming Rasmussen helped them pull together what would become their 2nd album, Ride The Lightning. As the album turns 40, we reminisce about how we came to know this metal classic, relive hearing them play (most) of the album live and debate if this is indeed ther best ever (Master Of Puppets is neck and neck according to us). We can really hear the progress on Ride The Lightning vs. the 1st album as the songs are tight with more complexity yet more melodic. And while the lyrics are very intelligent and clear, they deal with very heavy topics like nuclear war (Fight Fire With Fire), suicide (Fade To Black), ancient plagues (Creeping Death) and the horrors of war (For Whom The Bell Tolls). Cliff Burton's psychedelic wah-wah bass is not only unique but a driver of the melody that is inherent in these thrash classics. James Hetfield's powerful riffs are among the best he's ever recorded and provides that steady crunch against which Kirk Hammett can lay everything from frantic solos to trippy fills. This album remains #1 in the heart one of your hosts from the Metallica catalog - the other is on the fence. It's hard to believe Ride The Lightning turns 40 on July 27, 2024 but we love this one and had fun going track by track. Few bands have managed to endure four decades of shifting trends and breakneck performances in the way that Metallica has. Even fewer have solidified their legacy while at the height of their career. They're still selling out stadium double-headers while seeping into the consciousness of Gen Z via Stranger Things and TikTok virality, connecting their past to their future. Greetings Metal Heads- Hope everyone is safe ,healthy and enjoying summer. On This weeks show we feature another one of these Feel Good Metal stories. Today we're here to talk with Vocalist Jeff Allen of Witchslayer, the heavy metal band from Chicago who in 2023 PROPERLY released its first EVER album, something in the works for 40 years. Unfortunately Following the success of Witchslayer's 5-song demo in the early 1980's, Metal Blade Records included the song “I Don't Want To Die” on the Metal Massacre 4 compilation album ,the group disbanded before a new full length album could be recorded. Fast forward to 2022, original singer Jeff Allen has reformed the band with guitarist Ken Mandat (Damien Thorne), Bassist Mick Lucid (Viscous Circle), and drummer Gabriel Anthony (Tyrant's Reign). The new album features 11 hard-hitting tracks which were originally written by the original lineup in the early 80s, but recorded by the new lineup. Stay tuned for big things coming from Witchslayer soon! Jeff joins us to talk about the history of the band, the new release, and plans for 2023. Jeff shares details about early Whitchslayer opening for ACCEPT, contacting Metallica during the Kill Em All era and habnging out in California and the sunset strip era. (07/25/23) - On the 40th anniversary of Metallica's "Kill 'Em All," a ranking of the 6 best metal releases of 1983
Kill Em All, the debut album from heavy metal heroes Metallica, was released July 25, 1983 but not to much fanfare. They didn't have the budget (or desire) to make videos and their sound was so loud and aggressive, you never heard them on rock radio back then. MTV was happy with bands like Men at Work and Duran Duran to be beamed to the suburbs which simply weren't ready for the thrash that Metallica brought with them. The album only sold about 60,000 copies the first year it was out. But it was the start of something which wouldn't be realized until almost a decade later. To help us better understand the significance of Kill Em All and the rise of thrash, we've enlisted Jay Scott - our Pantheon Podcasts brother from The Hook Rocks and The Zeppelin Chronicles with Shout It Out Loudcast. Jay has been listening to Metallica since the beginning and theorizes that this album was the death of glam rock even though at the time it went completely unnoticed. We go track by track and Jay talks about the night he road his bike to a bowling alley at midnight for a chance to gaze upon the boys from Metallica. It may have started slow out of the gates but this album is the foundation for what is now the biggest band in the world. On this episode, Rhett and Zach discuss the relationship that they each have with the guitar at this point in their careers. Making a living doing the thing you love is great—in fact, it's something that so many players aspire to. But it changes the relationship between player and instrument when the instrument is a source of work. How do they stay excited about their work? And how do they get excited when they're in a lull? What keeps their creativity flowing? These are big questions, but our hosts are both having their own renaissances with their guitars. And—surprise!—it's because they've both come into some new key pieces of gear.Zach reports that he has been rippin' totally sweet Metallica licks on his sick new ESP LTD Kirk Hammett Signature Series KH-602. He's a longtime fan of the band—and has conveniently fallen back in love with Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning—and says he's wanted a Hammett signature guitar for his entire guitar-playing life. When he saw this one at Nashville's Guitars To Be Played, he fell in love with everything, from the skull and crossbones fret markers to the Floyd Rose. And you know what? The Floyd Rose isn't hard to set up. This guitar, Zach says, is kickstarting his “love of the guitar again.”Meanwhile, Rhett has been enjoying his new Soldano SLO-100 head and matching 4x12 cabinet, even if he does keep the cab a few flights below his control room. He's stoked about the story of Soldano, who he admires for being one of the early boutique amp builders, and has been playing this new 100-watter all week. When it's time to dip a rig, it's hard to find any faults. No spoilers, but it's a nice one (and an easy gig load). And in the shill zone, Zach talks about the importance of running a brown box for owners of older amps and talks briefly about the difference between the Brown Box and a Variac.Subscribe, like, and leave us a commentSign up on our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/iaCee5Support us on Patreon for access to our discord server and other perks! https://www.patreon.com/dippedintoneMERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/dipped-in-toneFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/dippedintone Dipped in Tone is:Rhett Shull https://www.rhettshull.com/Zach Broyles / Mythos Pedals https://mythospedals.comPremier Guitar https://www.premierguitar.com/
Do you loyal listeners remember, many years ago, when I was kicking around some alternate names for the show due to the sad fact that we can't advertise or do much of any marketing promotion because of the word “cigar” being in our name? Well I was listening to a Metallica interview the other day and James was telling the story of how they wanted to name their debut album back in 1983 “Metal Up Your Ass” with album art featuring a hand emerging from a toilet bowl clutching a sharp dagger but Megaforce record executives were strongly against the idea so the band went with “Kill ‘Em All” and the rest is music history. BUT I always liked that […] The post Episode 161 – Diesel Atonement TAA 2022 cigar, Booze, Fire Pit, Children of the Corn (2023) appeared first on Tuesday Night Cigar Club.
