Welcome to Season 10 of the Thoth-Hermes Podcast, dedicated to scholarly exploration of the Western Mystery Tradition. In this opening episode, Rudolf re-engages with Italian-American author David Pantano. David provides a dizzying timeline of occult development in the landscape that has become modern Italy. In the spirit of the Golden Bough (Fraser), David's book “The Magic Door” (2019) provides the canopy for honoring a history beginning with the European Wild West of Hesperia, embracing the varying definitions and forms of The Sacred through a culture's dynamic development. This Italic mythological history has repeatedly and deeply connected into international occulture. The conversation ranges from the importance of authentic linguistic diversity in both exoteric and esoteric reading to the appearance of Roman-era tripartite alchemical initiatory cosmology. Ovid, Virgil and the later Dante all receive citation, in addition Compano, and Ficino. The conversation explores Giordano Bruno's complex contributions not only to esotericism but larger practices such as the Art of Memory (in recent resurgence). We learn of the recent restoration of The Magic Door itself, with its multi-faith, multi-linguistic alchemical script… illustrating the tripartite. The repeated interaction, collusion and co-opting between Church and State are clearly acknowledged, as well as the pre-Rennaisance use of Magical Realism to influence the collective imagination towards the ideal of State. David and Rudolf take time to examine the influence of the UR Group, its writings, and ethical questions surrounding the figure of Julius Evola. David expresses his analysis that Evola, while holding controversial views, did repeatedly publicly and privately reject fascism David and Rudolph emphasize the rejection of hero worship toward any thinker, writer, or historical figure and the responsibility for sustained personal inner work as a bulwark against extremism. Pantano also invites the audience to contact him personally to further discuss or question any aspect of his writing or this interview. If you have questions for David or want to get in touch with him, go on his Faecbook page by clicking here and post him a message.  In the interview, David and I mentioned a few times the new edition of the collected publications of the UR-Group. Below you find a picture of this edition. By clicking on one of the images you will be brought to the corresponding page of the publishers - Inner Tradition. Music played in this episode And once again I am happy to present the music by one of our listeners! Joshua Kirch has sent me his beautiful work already more than a year ago, but now finally after the break I can happily present it to you: Josh Kirch is a musician and composer who started with guitar, and he soon moved to classical guitar and performing in a guitar trio - really enjoying the range of repertoire and especially the Renaissance pieces available. This eventually led him to start learning the lute and cello. His compositions often mix electronic elements with classical and early music instrumentation and themes, as well as more standard rock and folk moments. And as he says himself, his training in magic and the occult has also opened new horizons in regards to his musical work. You can find him here on Soundcloud 1) EAST GATE and SOUTH GATE, FROM GATE QUARTETS (2023) (Track starts at 9:51)

Alternative Rock musician Rob Munk released his new "Phased Out" album via Montclair, New Jersey based Magic Door record label, a grassroots imprint founded by Guided by Voices Kevin March and producer Ray Ketcham and Renee Lab from Elk City.  "Phased Out" is a record that somehow comes out of nowhere from an artist that has been almost everywhere. This is modern rock that respects people's emotional intelligence. With elements of 1990's and 2000's indie rock and traces of 1970's AM pop, this is music that respects people's emotional intelligence. For Rob Munk, music was never the plan. An actor from the age of three, he and his brothers would commute into NYC from New Jersey for gigs to help support life with a single Mom. After several years of filming commercials, including Jello pudding with Bill Cosby to scenes with Tina Fey, Tony Hale, John Goodman and Paul Giammatti, Munk was also cast as young Woody Allen in "Stardust Memories," his brother having played the same role in the Oscar-winning "Annie Hall." Munk was also a copywriter and creative director, writing huge campaigns for ESPN, Delta Airlines and AT&T.Upon moving to Boston, Munk's new band Thudpucker became a staple on the Boston rock scene in the early 90s as many local bands were starting to explode. Between several singles, gigs and touring, they opened for Pavement, Hole, the Afghan Whigs and Juliana Hatfield.  "Phased Out" is out now. For many Giuliano Kremmerz is still quite unknown. Well, today's guest David Pantano has set out to change this, and today we want to do a step together in that direction. And the topic is worth it! Kremmerz tried to create a Hermetic School that is much less arcane that some of his contemporary occultists wanted it to be. Naples and Egypt, including Egyptian Freemasonry play a role in all that. Also, to me Kremmerz' approach sounds also partly Rosicrucian, which in the context is surprising. But there are reaons for that, we hear. And of course, he did not come out of the blue, there is a long tradition of Western Esotericism, also influenced by antiquity and its history. David has published a book on that story as well and in this talk we are going to link history to Kremmerz' time. But we will also ask: what came after? A lot to cover, and I think it became a highly interesting talk with a person who is extremely knowledgable: David Pantano! David Pantano is an independent researcher, translator, historian, and writer specializing in spirituality, metaphysics, philosophy, and the initiatic practices of West and East. Author of The Magic Door, he lives in Toronto. NOW, TO ANOTHER POINT - ABOUT SHOWNOTES. You probably realized that since Season 6 these newsletters have changed dramatically and become nice texts about the content of the episode with some detailed remarks on the topic. And this was/is thanks to my friend Ursula, whom I mentioned several times here and whom I really want to thank once again. Her day job has grown considerably lately, and she is also the mother of two young children. That means that in the near future at least she will only be able to cover a show once in a while and she will continue to do that. But no longer on a weekly basis. So I thought I would invite YOU, the listeners, to do it in her place. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED to write an English text about the episode and the interview in advance, which then becomes the newsletter and part of the show notes on www.thothermes.com, PLEASE CONTACT ME at rudolf@thothermes.com, and I will get in touch with you. Those of you who show real interest will get to know the upcoming guests and subjects a few weeks in advance, and if you pick an interview, you will receive the “raw” sound file as soon as I have recorded the interview (usually one to three weeks in advance). You listen to it and you write your article about that episode. In return - well, I cannot offer any payment. But I will present a short portrait of the author on the website, in the newsletter, and also in the show intro itself. INTERESTED? I hope so! Do make yourself known! And this does not need to be a one-off, if you feel happy doing this from time to time, this would be wonderful LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU! Music played in this episode This episode is all about Italy, or at least about the geographic area that today we call Italy. So I thought I'd bring you an - admittedly VERY eclectic -  choice of music: all from the Italic Peninsula, but from completely diverse origins and time periods! 1) CIN-CI-LA, FOX DELLE LANTERNE, BOX D'AMORE  what a nice Foxtrott from Italy, a beautiful blend of American influence and southern European charm! With an unnamed orchestra, recorded in ... 1926! (this is why the sound sounds old...), so from the times of Giuliano Kremmerz! (Track starts at 7:17)

Here's a gardener's bedtime ritual for this time of year: Take sandpaper or a nail file and nick those nasturtium seeds before you soak them overnight; then sow them outside. They grow well in poor soil. The leaves and flowers are edible and are great in salads.   Brevities   #OTD It's the birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - born in 1859.   Ten years ago, in 2009, aviolin made from a dying sycamore tree in Conan Doyle's garden was played to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth. The violin was a nod to Conan Doyle's creation, Sherlock Holmes, who played the violin while solving cases. If you search for "Conan Doyle Garden" on twitter, you'll see a fantastic photographic portrait of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle sitting at a table in his garden with his Irish terrier Paddy sitting beside him on a bench. Doyle and his wife, Jean, purchased a quaint, thatched cottage they called Bignell House. Running along the boundary of the garden was a trout stream and it also had a wicket gate leading directly to the forest. There was a miniature golf course and a croquet lawn. Jean added a number of garden gnomes and statuary to the garden. The Doyles were spiritualists. They believed in garden fairies, pixies, and elves. During the First World War, when two girls took created fake photographs of fairies, Doyle fell for the pictures. They inspired him to write The Coming of the Fairies a book making the case for the existence of fairies. The garden influenced Doyle's writing. He wrote about monkshood and other poisonous plants. When he has his character John Watson write a list of Sherlock Holmes limitations; Watson mentions he knew nothing of practical gardening however, he did note that Sherlock was, "Well up in belladonna, opium, and poisons generally." In The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet, Sherlock Holmes solves the case thanks to footprints in the garden. In Doyle's Through the Magic Door,he wrote about the value of understanding botany: "A very little botany will enable you to recognize every flower you are likely to meet in your walks abroad, and to give you a tiny thrill of interest when you chance upon one which is beyond your ken. In an interview with Doyle published in The Strand Magazine in march 1919, he shares his understanding of an odd message that had come to him during a séance. It said, "Food comes before etymology." He said, "On the day before that on which I attended this seance, I had told my two little boys, aged nine and seven (these are children of Sir Arthur's second marriage) that they must go to work and kill all the caterpillars and other predatory insects in our garden. They were not inclined to do it, for they are very tender-hearted little fellows, but I explained to them that these insects were just as much a menace to our food supply as the German submarines then were. They understood the necessity then, and started at once. So now you can see the significance of the message that I received : 'Food comes before entomology,' " Aside from his belief in the supernatural, Doyle greatly enjoyed being in his garden. He did most of his writing in the garden. He once remarked, "What a lovely thing a rose is!" And, Doyle once gave a speech heartily supporting the Early Rising Billor Daylight SavingBillwhich was published in the Daily Mailon April 21, 1909, where he stated:  "Of every 100 people in the country ninety-nine would benefit by its passing. The only real objection is that it would set all the sundials wrong. (Laughter.) The need of this age is that people should get more in touch with nature; that they should have a little more fun in their lives; and I think that a measure which sends a man home one hour earlier to his wife and children, gives him a chance to cultivate his garden... would be of great benefit to the country."       #OTD It was on this day in 1978 that the botanist Florence Meier Chase died. Meier studied the relationship between sunlight and algae at the Radiation Biology Laboratory (RBL), a part of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO).  Meier, and her fellow botanists, used rooms in the tower and basement of the Smithsonian Castle for their research. "In the early days, scientists traveled between floors of the tower by climbing up and down a ladder through a trapdoor, often carrying trays of specimens or scientific equipment. In 1929, a very small elevator was installed in the tower to make the trip safer and easier."   In 1937, on Valentine's Day, Meier was giving people a tour around the Smithsonian Castle. She was demonstrating the how she and her group used the ladders and trapdoors to get around. As tour wrapped up, Meier let the group take take elevator down as there wasn't enough room for her.  As the elevator door closed, Meier waved goodbye, stepped backwards, forgot that the trap door was left open, and fell through to the floor below, breaking her back. While she was recovering at Garfield Memorial Hospital, her doctor was Dr. William Wiley Chase, the head of the surgery department. They married in 1939.       Unearthed Words  Today in 1885, Victor Hugo died; the author of the Hunchback of Notre-Dame as well as Les Miserables.  A gardener, Hugo had many wonderful garden-inspired quotes: "Life is the flower for which love is the honey."  "Sorrow is a fruit. God does not make it grow on limbs too weak to bear it." “A garden to walk in and immensity to dream in--what more could he ask? A few flowers at his feet and above him the stars.” "How did it happen that their lips came together? How does it happen that birds sing, that snow melts, that the rose unfolds, that the dawn whitens behind the stark shapes of trees on the quivering summit of the hill? A kiss, and all was said."   Today's book recommendation: Gardentopia by Jan Johnsen If you are looking to refresh your garden, or simply looking for Inspiration, Jan Johnsen’s new book, Gardentopia: Design Basics for Creating Beautiful Outdoor Spaces,is the perfect choice. Jan's a fabulous designer and a popular speaker. She was featured on The Still Growing Gardening Podcast in Episode 588 and Jan is such a delight. She's a pragmatist, highly intuitive, and she's known for her positive and collaborative approach to “co-creating with nature." In her book, solutions are divided into five categories: Garden Design and Artful Accents" , Walls, Patios, Walks and Steps, Theme Gardens, Color in the Garden and Plants and Planting. There's plenty to inspire gardeners - the cover is spectacular, the advice is fantastic - this should be on your wish list and on your go-to gardener gift list for 2019 and beyond.     Today's Garden Chore Incorporate more living mulch - ground covers - into your garden.    Take a second to chat with any experienced gardener, and they will tell you that they value ground covers more with each passing year. Dependable and hardworking, these plants solve many landscape problems.   Vita Sackville West was one of the first people to use the term "living mulch". She said,  "But, I added, in my reply to my correspondent, why restrict your rosebeds to a mere edging? Why not allow plants to encroach all over the beds? It will do the roses no harm; in fact, it will supply a living mulchto keep the ground moist and the roses cool at the root."       Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart   In researching Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I learned that the Spring before he died, Conan Doyle was bedridden. However, one morning, unattended, he got up and managed to go out to the garden. His family found him lying on the ground with one hand clutching his heart and the other holding a single white snowdrop. He languished until July 7, 1930, when he passed away with his family at his bedside. His last words were to his wife. He whispered, "You are wonderful."  Newspaper accounts shared that, on a beautiful summer day, he was buried in the garden where he had been so much at home - beside his garden hut, which was erected for him as a writing room. Over 200 people attended the funeral. So many wreaths were sent from all over the world that they were spread over the large paddock west of the home; covering an acre of land with blooms. When Conan Doyle's coffin had been placed in the grave, "Lady Doyle kissed a rose and threw it in." Lady Jean Conan Doyle continued to live at Windlesham until her death on 27th June 1940, she was buried next to Sir Arthur.     Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

In this episode, Teri welcomes Katie Ernst, co-founder of Select a Story, to talk about voice first interactive stories and the release of her Amazon Alexa skill in Canada.Welcome Katie Ernst!Katie Ernst is a lawyer, author, and co-founder of Select a Story, one of the leading companies that produces interactive stories for the voice-first platforms. I was really excited to have her as a guest recently to hear about her perspectives of this growing sector of Alexa skills. We also had a special surprise cameo appearance by a 9 year old girl, who is a fan of Select a Story…. and may or may not be my daughter (just saying’)!Katie’s StoryKatie is an author, who has written 10 “traditional” novels for children. Katie’s introduction to interactive stories began when she first got an Amazon echo, and after trying “The Magic Door” skill, she was inspired and she decided that she had the perfect skill set to start writing interactive stories of her own. While Katie began writing her first interactive story, Cinder/Charming, her husband began the software development. They make a great team and co-founded Select a Story! Some of Katie’s perspectives on Interactive StoriesKatie believes that there is something magical about being able to talk to a device, similar to “Computer” from Star Trek.In her experience, Katie finds it challenging to self-publish traditional books for middle school grades as this age-group tends to have less e-reader devices then older kids. The voice-first revolution makes is easier for authors to self-publish books for middle grades because these stories are more easily accessible by children via their household smart speakers.Katie’s first interactive story is called Cinder/Charming, a 30,000 word, voice-first publication, equivalent to approximately 120-130 pages. This story has 130 different scenes, all completely narrated with sounds effects. The listener makes decisions about the plot as the story progresses, similar to the old “Choose Your Own Adventure” books that I remember reading as a child. Katie has plans to expand the catalogue of stories that can be accessed through the Select a Story skill.Select a Story SkillSelect a Story is a great skill and you can check-out my review here. Co-founder of Select A Story Interview starts at 8:33 and ends at 33:40 “An interactive story is essentially a series of interlocking short stories. I think a lot of authors kind of forget about that, and they end up writing a story where at the end of it, it's like ‘Okay, you saw a spaceship, and then you thought to call the police and then you decided whether you should call your friend, and then you decided whether you should take a picture and put it on Instagram and then you went on the spaceship and you met the aliens, and it was fine. "he soon acquired a great popularity" [VALL]  Peggy Perdue, BSI ("Violet Westbury") has held the enviable position of librarian in charge of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection at the Toronto Reference Library for over a decade. In that role, she's seen remarkable developments and has made some intriguing acquisitions.   She has ascended to a new role, but before doing so, she oversaw the development and launch of the new Pop Sherlock exhibit. As IHOSE is dedicated to the intersection of Sherlock Holmes and popular culture, we're very interested in this topic.    We discuss exactly what got Peggy to her role, what her favorite item is, and what she has learned about Arthur Conan Doyle over the last 12 years.   Our Editor's Gas-Lamp in this episode are a few paragraphs taken from Arthur Conan Doyle's own Through the Magic Door.   Information on sponsors, links, and notes available below.             And please consider becoming a . This weeks show is all about Smart Speakers in our homes: Google Home, Amazon Echo, and Home pod.  I thought it would make it easier if I shared with folks my podcasting notes that I will be using when I do my demos on Google Home and the Amazon Echo Dot.   Google Home  Google Home is the first Smart speaker to be officially available in Australia.   Physical description:   mute on back of speaker to toggle mute microphone.  Uses dedicated charger rather than micro usb cable (surprised).  Sound is very very base.  On touch surface of speaker: on left side draw half circle clockwise to increase volume and counter clockwise to decrease volume.  1 finger tap to stop or start audio.  1 finger press activate speaker without saying “hey google”.  Turn Accessible sounds on for speaker listening within the Home app: i.e. after saying “Hey Google” will here traditional beeps to let you know that speaker is listening, say command, then beeps to let user know that speaker is processing command.   Setup the Google Home via the Home app on my Nexus 5 phone.  Downloaded the Google Home and followed the instructions to setup the Google Home Speaker: i.e. joining local network, choosing Google account to use with the device etc.   Google Home seems to have inbuilt functions called Actions. Comes with a trial subscription to Youtube Red and Google music.   Some useful commands:   Translate “phrase' in to another language - “Translate What is your name” to Italian”.  Doesn't alway work. What can I say. What is the time. When is Sun Rise. When is Sunset. What is the date. What is the weather. How long to get to work. Turn it up or turn it down. Roll a die. Flip a coin.C Where am I. Set an alarm. Cancel alarm. Check alarm. Snooze an alarm. Set a timer (can do multiple timers). Check timer. Cancel Timer. How do I make “dish name”. Add “item” to shopping list. Check shopping list. Tell me a joke. Tell me a knock knock joke. Do calculations. Convert measurements. Open “6 Swords”. Open  Blackjack 21. Open the Christal ball”. Open Eliza (very old AI conversation app). Open “The Temple in the forest”. Open the Magic Door”. Give me a random number between x and y. Sing me a song. Sing happy birthday. Check my Calendar (Google Calendar). Tell me the news.. Play podcast xxx (seems to be from Tune-in). Play chill out music (if Youtube default music player will play from source).  Can also say play  chill out on Google Play Music. Play aBC radio (plays local ABC radio Sydney). Play Album name or category. Whilst playing music - what is this song. Play 2gb radio (plays from iHeart radio). How do you spell the word xxx and have it spelled. What is the definition  of word and have it spoken. Play Twit Live (plays on Tune-in). What is the nearest restaurant. What is the phone number for xxx restaurant. No reminders or stop watch function.   Google Home app on iOS Main screen can access: Across top of screen: Menu button, Home title, and Devices button. Menu button contains: Signed in account name Accounts button, Close Menu button, Google Assistant Heading Things to Ask button, Music button, Home Control button, More Settings button, Devices button, Account preferences button, Offers button, How to Cast button, Google store button, Help button, Feedback button.   Below this - Listen and Discover tabs. Listen tab appears to be App suggestions for use on iPhone. Discover Tab - Voice Command History of your Activities button, heading “Related to your Activity,  command suggestions, Settings button, and then more app suggestions.   To turn the Accessibility toggle (sound that plays to let you now Home is listening) from home screen - Devices button, the 2nd More options button, Settings button, Accessibility Start Sound on/off button.   If playing music, to start/pause music and adjust volume from main screen - Devices button: current track playing is listed followed by Pause button, and Volume button.  Pause will start/stop audio.  Volume button changes to a volume slider to adjust volume.   Available from JB Hi-Fi and other retailers.  Approximately $200.   Amazon Echo Dot (and other Echo devices)   The Amazon Echo Dot can be accessed in Australia, but it is not officially supported which affects local service queries.   Physical description:   Squat and round with 4 buttons at 12, 3, 6 and 4.  AT one side of Dot, micro usb port to plug in to power and 3.5mm audio jack.  Can connect to Bluetooth. 4 buttons are: at 12 and 6 volume up and down, 9 mute mic toggle, and 3 action button (activate Alexa without saying “Alexa”.   As Amazon Echo not officially in Australia, was able to fully connect the Amazon Echo to my Wi-Fi network and access most of the features via the Alexa.amazon.com website including skills (apps for the echo). Turn Accessible sounds on for speaker listening within alexa.amazon.com i.e. after saying “Alexa” will here traditional beeps to let you know that speaker is listening, say command, then beeps to let user know that speaker is processing command.   Amazon Echo has user added functionality through enabling skills (apps).   Amazon Prime music doesn't appear to be accessible via my Australian Amazon account consequently I just use Tune-in as main music source.   Some useful commands:   Play “my last Audible book” or play book title from Audible”. Play “my last book from Kindle” or “play book title from Kindle”. What can I say. What is the time. When is Sun Rise (have to say Gosford In Australia). When is Sunset (have to say gosford Australia). What is the date. What is the weather (have to say Gosford Australia). Turn it up or turn it down. Roll a die. Flip a coin. Set an alarm. Cancel alarm. Check alarm. Snooze an alarm. Set a timer (can do multiple timers). Check timer. Cancel Timer. How do I make “dish name” used with the All Recipes skill. Add “item” to shopping list. Check shopping list. Tell me a joke. Tell me a knock knock joke. Do calculations. Convert measurements. Open “6 Swords” (after enabling it). Open  Blackjack 21 (after enabling it). Open the Christal ball (after enabling it). Open Eliza (very old AI conversation app) (after enabling it). Open the Magic Door (after enabling it). Give me a random number between x and y. Sing me a song. Sing happy birthday. Check my Calendar (can tie the Outlook skill to Alexa). Tell me the news (flash briefing).. Play podcast xxx (seems to be from Tune-in). How do you spell the word xxx and have it spelled. What is the definition  of word and have it spoken. Play Twit Live (plays on Tune-in). Open “stop watch” (after enabling). Playing music from Tune-in is a bit of a pain.  Also trying to get a local radio to play via tune-in is quite difficult, although triple plays fine.   Alexa.amazon.com website: After logging in with Amazon account, gives the following tabs: Home page - new AAlexa suggestions, shows what you last used/spok to Alexa, and useful links. Select the Navigation menu to bring up the following Alexa app tabs: Home tab 1 of 11, Now playing tab 2 of 11. Music and books tab 3 of 11 Lists tab 4 of 11 Timers and Alarms 5 of 11 Skills tab 6 of 11 Smart home tab 7 of 11 Things to try tab 8 of 11 Settings tab 9 of 11 Help and feedback tab 10 of 11 Not David sign out tab 11 of 11.   My favourite Alexa apps     My most used Alexa skills and activities are:   What is the time. What is the date. What is the weather in Gosford. Use of multiple timers when cooking. Set an alarm for 6am. Flash briefing. Spell word. Twitter. Chillout. Check my calendar (Outlook skill). Fitbit skill. Netatmo skill. Audible skill. Kindle skill. Wemo skill. Play 21 Blackjack. Play Rock Paper Scissors. unofficial Zork. Pig  Dice. Play Vision Australia Radio Melbourne on Tune-in. Play Vision Australia Radio Adelaide on Tune-in. Play MacBreak Weekly. Play the MacCast on Tune-in. Add “item” to Shopping list. Add “item” to ToDo list. Open this day in history.     Can buy the Amazon Echo devices usually from eBay related retailers in Australia.  Approximate price for the Echo Dot is $100 or so.  Hopefully Amazon actually coming to Australia in 2018.   Home Pod   Physical description: cylinder style speaker with a touch surface top to touch for start/stop music, and adjust the volume. Top also shows when Siri is listening.  Not sure, but likely to have a lightning port to plug in to power.   Tied to Apple Music. Uses Siri for voice interactions, and of course, use Siri to ask all sorts of questions. Control Home Kit enabled accessories. Supports Airplay 2.  Can have to Home Pods in the same room where they will balance the music between both speakers.  Home Pods in other rooms can e controlled by AirPlay.   A few functions that I hope Siri/Home Pod will do: Allow the use of multiple timers, Play iBook audio and eBooks, Not sound to bass when playing spoken word content. A Tweet noticed in the last week of July concerning the Firmware for the Home Pod emptied that Apple's Accessibility features such as VoiceOver would be supported in the Home Pod: i.e. perhaps using VoiceOver to read out certain information. Available from Apple stores and resellers December 2017.  Will retail for round about $600-700 or so here in Australia.
